A new book, Bitcoin Billionaires: A True Story of Genius, Betrayal, and Redemption” (Flatiron Books), includes the story of twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss and their adventures in the land of crypto-currency.

Ben Mezrich, the New York Times bestselling author of The Accidental Billionaires and Bringing Down the House, writes about the fascination and frustration that has accompanied the Bitcoin phenomenon.

One of the people the twins met was Charlie Shrem, the founder of BitInstant, one of the first firms to buy Bitcoin for clients. “In his Midtown office, with weed paraphernalia on every shelf, he kept three bongs on his desk — and was toking from one as he met the millionaires,” reports the New York Post.

“Welcome to the ‘Bakery,’ gentlemen,” said Shrem, according to the book. “If these walls could talk — well, they’d sound pretty f–ked up. There’s been a lot of secondhand smoke in this room.” The twins eventually became Bitcoins first billionaires back in 2017, after investing $800,000.

Just over a month ago, the brothers settled their lawsuit against Shrem, whom they had previously said owed them $26 million worth of the cryptocurrency.

“In an April 5 court filing, Judge Jed Rakoff of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York dismissed the case, explaining that the parties had informed the court they had reached a settlement,” according to coindesk.com. “However, both parties have the right to reopen the cause and proceed to trial within 30 days, or by May 5, “if the settlement is not fully effectuated,” the judge wrote. The terms of the settlement are confidential, Brian Klein, Shrem’s lawyer, told CoinDesk.”

Interestingly, entrepreneur, investor, and Bitcoin advocate Shrem recently announced that he will host Untold Stories, a new podcast from BlockWorks Group, a digital assets events and media company.

Shrem was one of the industry’s earliest advocates, having originally invested in Bitcoin as a college student in 2011, according to a press release. “He believes new users, investors, and builders must understand the history and intent of blockchain and cryptocurrency for the sector to properly progress.”

“Every day, more people enter the crypto space. It’s imperative that these new builders and investors understand how the crypto movement truly came to be and what we’re trying to accomplish,” said Shrem. He will also serve as an executive producer on the project, and work with BlockWorks Group to develop themes, choose featured guests, and manage production.”

In each episode, the release continues, Shrem “will speak with digital asset movers and shakers to uncover the stories of the movement that have never been heard before. These unique “untold stories” provided the inspiration for the show’s name.”

“Charlie is uniquely positioned to explore the early days of cryptocurrency with the very people who built it, said BlockWorks Group’s Co-Founder, Jason Yanowitz. “Untold Stories recognizes the trials and tribulations that went into building the movement that has grown into a multi-billion dollar sector.”

Design Flaws on Samsung’s 2K Foldable Phone Finally Fixed

0

Samsung has announced that it has repaired what some had been calling design flaws on its foldable phone, which sells for $2,000.

Some said the phones, which are of relatively recent vintage, were already breaking. The change: extending a protective layer covering the screen so it can be placed behind the display area, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.

The relatively easy change, together with shrinking the hinge on the folding phone, should mean the end of glitches responsible for Galaxy Fold’s planned introduction in April, the Korean news agency noted.

“The phone, which made waves when it was unveiled in February, features a tablet-size, 7.3-inch display that bends, allowing it to fold to the size of a regular smartphone with a 4.6-inch screen,” the New York Post reported. “Techies who peeled off the plastic layer reported blacked-out or flickering screens.

Other reviewers said the phones were breaking at their hinges, which will now be made smaller to minimize gaps, Yonhap reported.”

When Samsung’s Galaxy Fold hit the market, “it didn’t just announce another phone — it kicked off a revolution in the way we interact with mobile devices,” cnet.com reported. “But the Fold soon suffered screen breakages and other glitches, and the revolution stalled.

It’s been nearly four weeks since we’ve heard any details from Samsung about the Fold. An AT&T email to customers suggested that the phone would come next month. Samsung mobile CEO D.J. Koh said it “will not be too late.” And a Samsung spokeswoman told CNET only that the company plans to announce the release date “in the coming weeks.” Consumers, industry players and reviewers alike are waiting with bated breath.”

According to Yonhap, Samsung handled some other problems – for example, dust and dirt caught under the phone’s hinge — by making subtle changes in the design, such as making that part smaller.

“The Galaxy Fold was originally set to launch on April 26, but was delayed after the reviews. Yonhap sees the phone getting a U.S. release quite soon,” reported USA Today. “This isn’t Samsung’s first experience with a yanked phone. In 2017, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 had a battery that exploded into flames, and was pulled from the market, and never returned.”

“The South Korean tech giant had postponed the handset’s launch for an unspecified period of time while it investigated several hardware-related flaws pointed out by reviewers,” said firstpost.com. “It said initial findings showed the issues could be associated with impact on exposed areas of the hinges.”

Tesla’s Stocks Drop After Wall Street Deems Musk’s “Sci-Fi” Projects a Distraction

Wall Street is losing its affection for Elon Musk.

Musk’s company, Tesla, saw its stock drop to its level point in nearly 30 months. Part of the reason was an analyst’s conclusion that the entrepreneur’s “sci-fi projects” were proving to be a distraction, and had placed the firm in what he termed a “code red situation.”

Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities’ slashed his price target for Tesla shares from $275 all the way down to $230. He also advised some cost cutting, citing drooping demand in the United States. Noted Ives, “With a code red situation at Tesla, Musk & Co. are expanding into insurance, robotaxis, and other sci-fi projects/endeavors when the company instead should be laser focused on shoring up core demand for Model 3.”

In a memo sent to his employees last week, Musk charged that cost cutting will be the order of the day for at least the foreseeable future. “Going forward, all expenses of any kind anywhere in the world, including parts, salary, travel expenses, rent, literally every payment that leaves our bank account must (be) reviewed.”

“With a code red situation at Tesla, Musk & Co. are expanding into insurance, robotaxis, and other sci-fi projects/endeavors when the company instead should be laser focused on shoring up core demand for Model 3 and simplifying its business model and expense structure in our opinion with headwinds abound,” Ives wrote in a letter to investors.

The so-called “Sci-fi” projects to which Ives alluded include the rocket company SpaceX and the Boring Co., which digs tunnels for below-ground transit systems.

“Tesla is facing a quagmire as the company is in the midst of building out its next flagship factory in Shanghai with Giga 3, in the early stages of tooling/blueprinting its next Model Y for production slated for 2020, and ramping production of its mid-range and base Model 3 in the US, all while facing a growing cash crunch and high expense structure issue,” Ives also wrote.

Tesla’s shares have fallen about 38% this year, the Wall Street Journal reported. “T. Rowe Price Associates Inc.—for years one of Tesla’s biggest investors—sold roughly 81% of its holdings over the first three months of 2019, leaving the firm owning the smallest amount of Tesla stock since 2013. In April, Tesla reported one of the worst quarterly losses in its history as revenue declined 37% from the prior quarter to $4.54 billion. Vehicle deliveries in the period fell 31% from the fourth quarter.”

Netanyahu Warns Partners: Time Running Out to Form Right-Wing Gov’t

0

“I regret that the parties are still in the treetops,” Netanyahu told a weekly meeting of his old Cabinet as the formation of a new one remains elusive.

With a deadline looming to form a new government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is urging his potential future partners to get off the “treetops” in order to prevent losing an opportunity to form a right-wing government and potentially even forcing yet another Knesset election.

On the heels of the April 9th parliamentary ballot, Netanyahu has until May 28 to build a new majority in the 120-seat Knesset, though he might begrudgingly suffice temporarily with 60 members to get the government running and lure in others later.

Still operating with the ministers of his previous government, the prime minister said at the weekly Cabinet meeting: “I regret that the parties are still in the treetops. I hope that a way will be found soon to bring them down to the ground of reality so that together we can form a strong and stable government for the State of Israel that will continue to lead the country to new heights.”

Netanyahu’s Likud party finished tied with the Blue and White faction in the election with 35 seats each. President Reuven Rivlin, in his ceremonial capacity, gave the incumbent prime minister the nod over Blue and White leader Benny Gantz to form the next government because parties representing a majority of the Knesset told the president that they prefer the Likud.

Common wisdom and the historic track record indicate that parties are likely to fall in line before time runs out next week. If, however, that scenario does not play out, Rivlin would give MK Gantz a crack, and if he fails, Israelis could find themselves going back to the polls.

Netanyahu finds himself in a position to form a new government despite criminal indictments which are pending against him in three cases.

Channel 12 news reported comments made by the prime minister that he intended to advance legislation that would grant him legal immunity as long as he remains premier.

“After I complete my term, I will address my legal affairs. Israel’s citizens knew what my situation was and elected me,” he reportedly said.

“If I were thinking of my personal good, I would conduct my trial as prime minister, not as a private citizen, but I realize that it would not be for the good of the state,” Netanyahu added, according to Channel 12.

The process of forming a governing majority includes reaching an agreement on policy guidelines with each of the coalition partners.

Likud sources say that in order to prevent additional confrontations with potential partners who object to the immunity legislation, the prime minister’s ambition to pass the bill might not be included specifically in the policy guidelines. Criticism of such a law has also come from some members of Netanyahu’s own party.

Other demands reportedly being made in the coalition negotiations include the call by the Union of Right-Wing Parties (URP) to remove military authority from the day-to-day life of Israelis in Judea and Samaria. The objective of such a move would be to transfer authority to Israeli civilian bodies instead and thereby carry out a de facto imposition of Israeli law on the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria.

Also in the government formation talks, religious-secular tensions still exist between Haredi Orthodox factions and the Yisrael Beytenu party which objects to what it views as religious coercion.

The prime minister is faced, as well, with the task of placating Knesset members from the Likud and the coalition partners by appointing them to prestigious ministerial and parliamentary positions.

Israel Receives High Praise for Hosting of Eurovision

0

Israeli organizers are praised for their running of the event, which went smoothly despite boycott calls and other controversies.

After months of planning and a week filled with music, partying, and at times controversy, the annual Eurovision Song Contest has come to a close in Tel Aviv. The Netherlands was declared the winner by professional panels and a popular vote submitted through phone apps by viewers around the world.

The Dutch victory means the Netherlands earns the right to host next year’s event. Israel won last year’s contest but finished near the bottom in Saturday night’s grand final.

Israeli organizers received high grades from foreign visitors for their running of the event, including both the technical details of conducting the singing competition itself as well as outside arrangements which included activities that took place in the Eurovision Village.

Because of Israel’s ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, this year’s event was marked by various anti-Israel calls to boycott the competition. The Jewish State earned the hosting honor by virtue of winning last year.

Local organizers breathed a sigh of relief that the boycott calls did not disrupt the smooth flow of the week-long activities, which included a semifinal round on Tuesday and Thursday and the grand final on Saturday.

The only blatant political detour centered around Iceland’s representative, a punk rock band called Hatari. Their song and overall demeanor were provocative and hostile.

On Saturday night, as their final result was announced, members of the Icelandic group held up Palestinian banners.

On the other hand, other foreign competitors spoke of Israel’s beautiful sights and how they enjoyed their visit.

After Israel’s victory last year, some Israeli officials and politicians called for hosting the 2019 contest in Jerusalem. However, both the lack of international recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over its capital and the more conservative nature of the holy city convinced government officials to back off and acquiesce to hosting the song contest in Tel Aviv instead.

Even with the extravaganza taking place in cosmopolitan Tel Aviv, internal Israeli controversy erupted over violation of religious observance of the Jewish Sabbath, which included friction over the issuing of Sabbath work permits for Eurovision preparations and rehearsals.

To protest the Sabbath desecration, haredi political parties temporarily suspended talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s representatives on forming a new government majority in the Israeli parliament in the aftermath of the April 9 general election.

In addition, a band on behalf of the Shalva non-profit organization, which supports and empowers individuals with disabilities and their families was forced in February to pull out of the Israeli competition for determining the country’s representative at Eurovision because of the issue of Sabbath observance.

All members of the band have disabilities, from blindness to Down syndrome and Williams’ syndrome. The band was advancing toward a victorious crowning as Israeli champion but backed out as preparations required breaking the rules of the Sabbath, even though the competition itself was not taking place on the day of rest. The band includes members who observe Sabbath in an Orthodox manner, as does the founder of the organization.

Shalva made a special appearance in Thursday night’s event and received rave reviews not only from Israelis but also in Europe. Some went as far as to say that Israel would have won again had the Shalva Band represented the country.

IDF Debunks Lie About ‘Gazan Child Who Died Alone’

The IDF has responded to a new allegation being circulated by the Palestinian Authority (PA) and other elements about a Gazan girl who died at home after receiving treatment in Israel and who suffered beforehand as a result of Israel cruelty.

The Arabs are claiming that Aisha Lulu, five years old from Bureij refugee camp in Gaza, died at home shortly after returning from receiving treatment in Jerusalem.

The PA claimed Sunday that none of Lulu’s family members were allowed by Israel to enter the country to be at her side while in the hospital as applications by her family members to accompany her to Jerusalem for her complicated brain surgery were denied by the IDF.

This tragic story reflects the “oppression and suffering of the Palestinian people,” stated PA Minister of Health Mai Alkaila.

“How can a little child travel alone through Israeli checkpoints without being escorted by her mother, father or brother to provide her with affection and psychological support during treatment?” Alkaila said in a press statement.

While the PA claimed that Lulu was alone as a result of Israel’s refusal to admit her parents into the country, the IDF said it was Lulu’s parents who refused to leave Gaza and accompany her to the hospital in Jerusalem.

The IDF’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), which is entrusted with facilitating Arabs’ medical treatment in Israel, stated Sunday night that “in contrast to various publications, Israel approved the entry of Aisha Lulu for medical treatment in a hospital in east Jerusalem after her parents signed a declaration stating that they did not want to leave the Gaza Strip with her.”

“In addition, we emphasize that, contrary to publications, Aisha Lulu died in the Gaza Strip after returning home two weeks ago after an operation that unfortunately did not succeed at Al-Makassed Hospital. It should be emphasized that as a policy, the Gaza District Coordination Office (DCO) requires parental guidance for medical treatment of minors, based on the understanding that a child needs his parents during these moments. In this case too, in accordance with the DCO procedure, Aisha’s parents were required to sign a statement stating that they did not want to accompany their daughter during the treatments – for their own reasons – and asked that another person on their behalf accompany her,” COGAT clarified.

Israel regularly offers its medical services, know-how and expertise to Arab care providers and patients, in many cases free of charge, and facilitates care for Arab patients who seek it elsewhere.

Church in PA Vandalized; Christian Population Drops to All-Time Low

Another Christian institution in the Palestinian Authority (PA) was targeted by vandals, while the number of Christians living in the PA has dropped to an all-time low.

The Anglican Church in the PA village of Abםud, near Ramallah, was broken into on Thursday and valuable property, including religious artifacts, was stolen.

A resident of Aboud, identified only as I.M., told TPS that the atmosphere in the village is charged and that there appear to be elements who are pushing the generate strife between Christians and Muslims. He estimates that this incident is a religion-based hate crime. He added that that jewelry, computers and other electronic equipment were stolen from the church.

This is the third incident in the past month in which Christians living in the PA were targeted.

The St. Charbel Monastery in Bethlehem was broken into last week, the sixth time to be targeted in recent years. The convent, part of the Lebanese Maronite Church, has been repeatedly targeted, and Father Yacoub Eid, the monastery head, has asked the PA to protect the Christian holy sites.

Attacks on Christians in the PA have recently expanded, and are driven by religion.

Last month, Christian residents of the town of Jifnah in the PA were attacked by Fatah activists and were forced to pay the Muslim Jizyah ransom tax after a local woman complained to the police about the son of a senior Fatah official.

The violent incident, which included shooting, occurred in an almost exclusively Christian area, situated north of Jerusalem and near Ramallah, the de facto PA capital.

In a notice published on Facebook, the Christian residents of Jifnah complained about the loss of security and of their property, especially after they were forced to pay the Jizyah, as demanded by Islam.

They demanded that the newly-appointed Prime Minister Mohammad Ishtayeh intervene and ensure their safety, and decry the “racist and sectarian” behavior by a “senior official.”

A member of one of the families told TPS that the Fatah members ordered them to pay the Jizyah “so that they could enjoy the PA’s protection” and that the event was caused by religious and sectarian hatred.

The Jizyah is an annual per capita tax levied by Islamic law on non-Muslim subjects residing in Muslim lands. The tax is a fee for protection provided by the Muslim ruler to non-Muslims, for the permission to practice a non-Muslim religion with some communal autonomy in a Muslim state, and as proof of the non-Muslims’ submission to the Muslim state and its laws.

Jizyah has also been understood by some as a ritual humiliation of the non-Muslims in a Muslim state for not converting to Islam.

The Muslim-Christian Council in Jerusalem recently published a survey that shows that the Christian population in the PA consists of only one percent of the general population. Tens of thousands of Christians have left the PA for other parts of the world following religious persecution they have encountered at home, including the confiscation of Christian land and the assault on young Christian women.

Once a sizable community, the survey’s numbers show that today the community numbers only 45,000 in the PA, with 4,000 living in Jerusalem and only 1,000 living in Gaza.

Arabs Enraged by Germany’s ‘Fascist’ Resolution Branding BDS as Anti-Semitic

0
A large majority of the German Bundestag on Thursday passed a motion defining the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement as anti-Semitic and called on government bodies to refrain from funding or supporting any groups that question Israel’s right to exist. A large majority of the German Bundestag on Thursday passed a motion defining the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement as anti-Semitic and called on government bodies to refrain from funding or supporting any groups that question Israel’s right to exist.

The motion was supported by Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Social-Democrat Party (SPD), the Green Party and the Free Democrats. However, the motion is not legally binding.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Arabs and BDS activists slammed the resolution as “fascist” and “racist.”

Mahmoud Nawajaa, the General Coordinator for BDS, said that his movement would coordinate actions with other Arab organization to repel the German motion and would petition a German Constitutional Tribunal on the issue.

Nawajaa conceded that the motion consisted of a dangerous precedent for the BDS as it could generate similar resolutions in other countries. He rejected the German motion as “a racist a fascist decision.”

The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) terror group condemned the move as an encouragement for Israel’s occupation and its suppressing of human rights, its expansion of the “settlements” in Judea and Samaria and its destruction of the PA’s economy.

The DFLP further charged that the decision served the Trump administration and its “Deal of the Century” peace plan for the Middle East, and that Germany’s true face was exposed, despite its declared support for a two-state solution, human rights and democracy.

BDS activist Salah Khawaja wrote on Facebook that the German resolution counters legitimate international decisions and the international treaty on human rights and that the German parliament has officially joined the Neo-Nazi alliance with President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

While BDS supporters were enraged by the resolution, Israel warmly welcomed it.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated the German Bundestag “on the important decision.”

Israel’s Ambassador to Germany Jeremy Issacharoff welcomed the initiative, saying it has a “broader European significance given that BDS makes no attempt to build coexistence and peace between Israel and all of its neighbors.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon stated that Israel’s welcomed the Bundestag’s resolution which “recognized the anti-Semitic nature of BDS and its illegitimate boycott activities. This is an important step which we hope will be adopted by other European legislative bodies.”

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, on Friday welcomed the decision and crowned it is “a crushing victory for the truth and a great achievement in the struggle against Israel’s detractors.”

“Germany proved to BDS supporters that its lies do not go unnoticed, but will pay a price. I congratulate the German parliamentarians who took part in passing this historic decision and call on the rest of the world leaders to join Germany, and work towards shaping a future without hatred against Jews and against Israel,” he added.

In 2016, Berlin’s Mayor Michael Müller observed that a tactic adopted by the BDS campaign of “standing with anti-Semitic signs in front of Berlin shops” is the functional equivalent of “the intolerable methods used in the Nazi era.”

Intelligence agencies in three German states, Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, and Rhineland-Palatinate, have identified the BDS campaign as anti-Semitic.

In August 2017, Frankfurt became the first German city to pass a bill outlawing municipal funding for the BDS’s activities.

In May 2017, the SPD passed a resolution in support of Israel and condemning BDS as anti-Semitic, while in December 2016, Merkel’s CDU announced the passing of a resolution declaring BDS anti-Semitic.

Israel Slams Al Jazeera for Holocaust Denying Clip

0

Israel condemned the Al Jazeera news network after it published a clip making light of the Holocaust and apparently denying aspects of it.

The clip alleged that Israel is the top beneficiary from the Holocaust, and uses it as an excuse for ethnic cleansing and the extermination of the Palestinians. It also claimed that the world focused on the six million Jewish victims, out of 20 million victims of the Nazis, because of the influence of Jewish organizations.

Al Jazeera further claimed that the number of Holocaust victims is debatable, that some deny the extermination while some say it is exaggerated, and some blame the Zionist movement for playing up the Holocaust.

Israeli journalist Shimrit Meir, who exposed the story, noted that the video was posted on a Friday night, after Iftar that breaks the Ramadan fast, because Al Jazeera “wanted all the traction they could get.” Nighttime watching during Ramadan is considered primetime in the Muslim world.

“Needless to say, with 750,000 views on Facebook in just a few hours, this is not your usual anti-Semite preacher on a Friday sermon. This is a huge propaganda machine that shapes the worldview of millions in the region, and in the Al Jazeera case, millennials,” she added.

Al Jazeera Media Network stated Friday that it deleted the video, produced by Al Jazeera Arabic, because “it violated the editorial standards of the Network.”

“This Holocaust denying video should not have been produced at all. Good that you deleted it,” stated Israel’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon. “Reason prevailed and an insane anti-Semitic Holocaust denying ‘educational video’ and meant to fuel hatred of Israel and the Jews in the Arab world, was removed.”

“This ‘explanation’ of the Holocaust is the worst kind of pernicious evil. That’s how Al Jazeera brainwashes young people in the Arab world and perpetuates hatred of Israel and the Jews. Lies and evil propagated by the ideological descendants of ‘Der Stürmer’,” he added.

Israel announced in August 2017 that it planned to ban Qatar’s flagship Al-Jazeera network from operating in the country over allegations it incites violence and supports terrorism, joining Arab nations that have shut down the broadcaster amid a separate political dispute.

Israeli officials have long accused Al-Jazeera, a pan-Arab satellite network funded by the Qatari government, of bias against the Jewish state. Then-Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has likened its coverage to “Nazi Germany-style” propaganda.

DeBlasio For Prez? NO WAY !!!

0
The frightening part is that DeBlasio really thinks he is capable of dealing with the rest of the world when to us, his captives within the city boundaries, he's no more than a bumbling idiot. Photo Credit: Shutterstock

The prospects for a resurgence of the struggling chapeau industry should be getting a shot in the arm with as many as 24 Democrat candidates tossing their hats in the ring for the presidential nomination. And that’s just the latest count. But the latest contestant for this monumental but thankless job is none other than one of our own, the inept mayor of the Big Apple……Bill De Blasio. Don’t get us wrong. We and about 60% of other New Yorkers would like someone to take him off our hands and out of Gracie Mansion, but just the thought of him occupying the White House and corrupting the entire nation, is downright scary. The frightening part is that he really thinks he is capable of dealing with the rest of the world when to us, his captives within the city boundaries, he’s no more than a bumbling idiot.

We’ve struggled for years under his and his wife, Chirlane’s rule and we just found out more bad news. That the program she started 4 years ago, the ThriveNYC scheme funded by 900 million $ of taxpayer money to improve our town’s mental health, has disappeared. Since its inception, the organizers of that questionable boondoggle have largely failed to keep records and appear to have accomplished nothing. And Chirlane was selected by her loving spouse to run this monumental undertaking although her, call it what you will, claim to fame is as a black/lesbian/activist poet, political speech writer and wife to Hizzoner.

So, under her “leadership” nearly one billion bucks are gone like the cleanliness and efficiency of our subway system, like the destruction of our acclaimed three elite high schools that have sent off tens of thousands of kids to better the world community and of course, the stupidity of running Amazon out of town by AOC. All of the above and more given to you by the De Blasio family team of incompetents who might perhaps even might be labeled criminals by an honest prosecutor if one can be found to dig into this mess of their administration.

Some might complain that his campaigning around the country will deprive us of his “leadership.” Hank Sheinkopf, a veteran Democrat consultant might have hit the nail on the head with his comment on the matter: “New York city residents have never felt that he’s been involved in the grind that makes NYC government work. So it doesn’t matter. The bureaucracy is running this place. He’s not running it.” So… do we ever miss the likes of Mayors Guiliani and Bloomberg!!!! Our thought bears repeating. As incompetent as De Blasio is as our own Mayor and as much as we’d like to see him go, the thought of him as president is our nightmare. Don’t let it happen!!

Trump: “If Iran Wants to Fight, That Will Be the Official End of Iran”

0
The Iranians have been permitted for 40 years to terrorize the world at will without ever being held to account by the Western nations, they are once again brandishing their holy sword of war over us, believing that once again, we will give in to their threats. Photo Credit: Shutterstock

We don’t believe there will be a war with Iran in the near future. Our side surely doesn’t want one. And we hope and pray that they, the believers in Holy War (Jihad) for world conquest, whose goal is to establish an Islamist Caliphate, have some rational leaders who understand that such a conflict fought with modern weapons will lead to their total destruction. President Trump, understands the results of this all too possible, unimaginable (to any sane person,) conflagration but because the Iranians have been permitted for 40 years to terrorize the world at will without ever being held to account by the Western nations, they are once again brandishing their holy sword of war over us, believing that once again, we will give in to their threats.

This is not a good scenario but one that we’ve seen in the past. Hitler, whose early German army didn’t even have one fighter plane or tank in its arsenal, eventually conquered all of Europe because of his enemy’s failure to take a stand. Look what that got us. Stalin, whose post WWII regime was war torn, with tens of millions killed, no economy, totally broke, was permitted by the weakness, again, of the Western world to threaten nuclear war if his demands weren’t met. And look how he met his peaceful Waterloo by the courage and toughness of both Presidents Reagan and Bush The Elder. These daring leaders had the boldness, not easy at any time, to stand their ground and face up to their Communist foes and grind them down to defeat not with war but economically.

Of course the Russkies were not led by religious fanatics such as those at the helm of Iran. However, let’s look at how, under the leadership of Trump, our nation has virtually destroyed the threat of ISIS and how Iran has been stopped in its tracks with its threats of annihilating Israel. The Jewish State has been permitted (by Trump) to attack Iranian forces that had been given the green light by President Obama and a weak-kneed Europe to invade and occupy Syria. Israel not only snarled at the Iranians but stood toe-to-toe with them and guess what? The Iranians backed off. Trump has ripped up our traitorous deal with Iran to the teary-eyed consternation of Europe’s leaders. He has warned Iran, not with mere verbal threats that if they attacked Israel, our current seaborne arsenal, now ensconced in the Mediterranean will unleash weaponry unimaginable on their forces and nation. They will back off.

We must not permit the threats of war by our brutal enemies to cause us to slink away in defeat. We’ve seen the results of democracies being paralyzed by threats from bully nations. We must finally stand up to Iran and North Korea, not with gifts of goods, gold, graciousness and good will, but with a strong sense of purpose and power. Let’s once and for all, use our military and commercial strengths to make our enemies think twice about threatening us.

Schumer’s Handling of Robo Calls

Dear Editor:

Senator Charles Schumer should practice what he preaches when introducing his proposed legislation to combat robo-calls. It is called “Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence or “TRACED” Act. This would allow federal agencies to trace calls and prosecute criminals, increase fines and lengthens the statute of limitations. Schumer also wants placing responsibility on phone companies by requiring carriers to a have system to block robocalls.

This legislation including annoying automated phone messages from spammers and scammers is just the start. Can we add all the annoying robo-calls from Schumer endorsing his favorite primary and general election candidates, along with his own reelection calls? Never shy around a microphone or camera, we already hear enough from Schumer every day.

Sincerely,

Larry Penner

Miffed at Pelosi for “Standing With Racists”

Dear Editor:

Nancy Pelosi embraces Al Sharpton and the Congressional Black Caucus who stand with and refuse to renounce open, unabashed, Jew hater. Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan. Pelosi said “Al Sharpton saved America”. Sharpton brought us the completely fabricated, racist Tawana Brawley charges against an innocent white police officer whose life was ruined, a man Brawley falsely accused of rape in 1987.

Pelosi defends Tlaib and Omar who peddle outright lies, slander and bigotry against Israel and Jews and…gets a Profile in Courage Award. “The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, said that “desperate attempts to smear” Tlaib and misrepresent her comments were “outrageous.” Tlaib was neither smeared nor misrepresented. It was Pelosi’s defense of her remarks that was outrageous. Worse, this is now part of a pattern by Pelosi of sanitizing and normalizing antisemitism.”

Tlaib rewrites history by attempting to whitewash the so called Palestinian Arabs’ siding with Hitler and waging war on Israel even before it was a nation, exactly the kind of anti-Semitic lies that are spread to delegitimize the state of Israel…”Palestinian leadership during World War II actually worked with Adolf Hitler. Far from giving their lives to provide safe haven for the Jews, as she claimed, the Arabs of Palestine did everything they could to stop them from coming in and slaughtered as many as possible. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al Husseini, formed a pact with Hitler that if he won the war, the Mufti would ensure that every Jew in the Middle East was exterminated.”

“Although Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar accused Israel of “hypnotizing the world” and prayed that “Allah awaken the people and help them see [Israel’s] evil doings,” Pelosi appointed her to the House Foreign Affairs Committee. And after Omar claimed that Jews use their money to suborn American politicians in the interests of Israel, Pelosi played down the remark. “

John F. Kennedy must be turning in his grave, he who stood for truth telling and courage. This was a man who could identify a real victim from an oppressor, insights that are lost on Pelosi. This award disgraces the Kennedy center and his legacy.

What does this say about the future of Jews in the USA when leaders who support Israel demonizers and hate peddlers get distinguished awards?

Sincerely

Rockefeller Foundation Supports Groups with Anti-Semitic Bias

Dear Editor:

The Rieders Foundation is filing a formal complaint with the New York state division of Human Rights on Monday May 20, 2019 against the Rockefeller Brother’s Foundation (RBF) for its extensive and well-documented donations to groups with anti-Semitic and anti-Israel bias. Attached to the complaint is a 19- page report outlining the various individuals and organizations that the RBF supplies with grants. Stephen Heintz, president of the RBF, responded to these claims in an article that was published in Tablet magazine. Heintz reiterated that donations regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were “aimed at ending the 50-year long occupation in order to bring justice, dignity, and security to all Israelis and Palestinians.”

Heintz failed to acknowledge that many of the recipients of RBF grants strongly support a 1 state solution, as well as the boycott, divest, and sanction (BDS) movement. BDS is widely recognized as the least productive path to a peaceful solution, eliminating the possibility for two states to coexist side by side. Legislation in the United States has made BDS irrelevant in 27 states and the number is increasing steadily. BDS is a symbolic replacement for traditional anti-Semitism, as was recognized 5/17/2019 by the German Bundestag.

At the Rieders Foundation, we are also clarifying the tax-exempt status that the RBF operates under. With donations as large as $3 million to organizations such as JStreet for its “Iran Campaign”, the RBF should not remain eligible for its 501(c) 3 tax-exempt status. Other recipients of RBF grants include, Ifnotnow, Jewish Voice for Peace, and the US campaign for Palestinian rights. Organizations such as Defense for Children International (which received $25,000 from the RBF in 2017) employed board members and workers with direct ties to the Popular front for the liberation of Palestine (PFLP), “a terrorist organization designated as such by the US, EU, Canada, and Israel.”

Sincerely

Joshua Rieders

No, Palestinians Didn’t Offer ‘Safe Haven’ to Jews Fleeing Europe

0

Last week, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib claimed that she thought it was her Palestinian ancestors who provided a “safe haven for Jews.” According to a report, she claimed that while Palestinians had “lost their land and some lost their lives,” it was done “in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-Holocaust, post-tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time. And I love that it was my ancestors that provided that in many ways.” One problem. That’s the opposite of what happened.

Hajj Amin al-Husseini, the most powerful Palestinian public figure of his day, was allied with Adolf Hitler.

As the Nazi persecution of the Jews was seeking to deprive them of their rights, after the 1935 Nuremberg Laws and the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938, the Palestinian Arab revolt in British Mandate Palestine led to restrictions on Jewish immigration. At precisely the time when Jews needed a safe haven, it was taken from them by the British authorities – and due in large part to Palestinian Arab opposition to Jewish refugee immigration.

The 1939 White Paper, created that May by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, was a response to three years of the revolt in Palestine led by Mufti Hajj Amin al-Husseini. It began in May 1936 and was not fully defeated until August 1939. The White Paper limited Jewish immigration to 75,000 people in five years, precisely the years of the Holocaust.

The British couldn’t have known this at the time but they would have known that the MS St. Louis had left Hamburg on May 13, 1939, with Jewish refugees seeking to flee Germany. The ship was prevented from letting its refugees off in Canada and the US, and 254 of the refugees were murdered by the Nazis. In fact, the boat was forced back to Europe in June and the UK took 288 of its 900 passengers.

So the UK was keenly aware of the Jewish refugees fleeing Europe. But the UK wanted to placate the Palestinian Arab rebels as the war clouds gathered in Europe. The White Paper was the response. The problem with Tlaib’s characterization of Palestine as a “safe haven” is that the reality was that Jewish immigrants and refugees were not welcomed or provided a safe haven in the country. Instead, they faced consistent harassment and massacre.

In April 1920, Husseini, the same one who led the Arab Revolt in the 1930s, used the occasion of the religious procession of Nebi Musa to instigate riots against Jews. The British concluded that the riots were due to “Arab disappointment at non-fulfillment of the promises of independence” and “Arab belief that the Balfour Declaration implied a denial of self-determination.” The November 1917 Balfour Declaration had been issued by the British with promises to help create a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.

In August 1929, more riots across British Mandate Palestine led to the murder of 133 Jews, including the massacre of Jews in Hebron. These were also incited by Husseini, who had given out pamphlets claiming there was a Jewish conspiracy to take over al-Aqsa Mosque. This was not a “safe haven,” but a butchering and persecution of ancient Jewish communities in places like Hebron. It was not opposition to “Zionism,” but the purposeful targeting of the most vulnerable and indigenous Jewish communities.

Far from being a safe haven, the British interned Jewish refugees in camps in Palestine. At Atlit, one of the many internment camps for Jews, can still be seen. It is thought that 122,000 Jews were able to flee through the British blockade to Palestine, but many thousands ended up in camps like Atlit. They were sprayed with DDT, which harmed their health.

The British even sought to deport Jewish refugees who were able to make it to other countries. For instance, they tried to send 1,800 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Europe in 1940 to Mauritius aboard the ship Patria and another ship named Atlantic. This was not a “safe haven” but a brutal treatment meted out to the weakest and most vulnerable people who had risked everything trying to flee Hitler’s Europe. At a time when Jews desperately needed to leave, not only were the doors of Western countries closed to them, but also those of Palestine and other areas in the Middle East.

Husseini, the Palestinian Arab leader, had fled British Palestine by this time and ended up briefly in Lebanon and then in Iraq. In Iraq, he supported the extremist nationalism that led to the Rashid Ali coup and the attacks on Jews known as the Farhud, in which hundreds of Jews were killed. Later, Husseini was able to get to Hitler’s Europe, where he supported the Holocaust.

There were Palestinian Arab leaders who sought reconciliation and coexistence. Fakhri Nashashibi, who was assassinated by Husseini’s agents, had good relations with Jews in British Palestine. His funeral was attended by Sephardi Chief Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel, Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, Moshe Shertok and former Jerusalem mayor Daniel Auster. But in general, the voices that might have created a safe haven were either drowned out, ignored or assassinated by extremists.

The Iranian Government’s 40 Years of Hatred Towards America

0
Iran breached international law by carrying out the 1979 US Embassy takeover in Tehran. Iran detained and humiliated 52 Americans and did not release these hostages for 444 days, the longest hostage-taking in modern history. The argument that the US must take an apologetic stance towards the theocratic establishment of Iran is being repeatedly made without the evidence of any effectiveness to back it up.

Former President Barack Obama created this policy, and insisted that it would be successful. Even as Iran flaunted its disregard for the American government, as well as human life, President Obama would continually apologize to the Iranian leaders. He made it sound as if America was to blame for initiating the hatred that the Iranian government projects toward the United States.

But let us get the historical facts straight. Hatred and deep antagonism towards the US, Israel and the Jews are indispensable pillars of the Islamic Republic of Iran. When the ruling mullahs came to power in 1979, it was not the US that started the hatred by criticizing or opposing the ruling clerics. In fact, former President Jimmy Carter welcomed the Islamic Republic and viewed Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as a good religious holy man. According to recently declassified documents, the Carter administration even paved the way for Khomeini to return to Iran.

Such amicable behavior and support from the US, however, did not change Tehran’s policies. The Islamic Republic still publicly declared its revolutionary ideals, which, from the outset, included standing against Israel and the US.

It was Iran, not the US, that breached international law by carrying out the 1979 US Embassy takeover in Tehran. Iran detained and humiliated 52 Americans and did not release these hostages for 444 days, the longest hostage-taking in modern history.

This was the beginning of the journey of hatred. It was also Iran, not the US, that immediately began using its proxies, such as Hezbollah, to commit terrorism and incite antagonism towards America.

Hezbollah has been accused of terrorist attacks, including the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marines barracks in Beirut, in which 241 U.S. Marines were killed; the 1983 U.S. Embassy bombing in Beirut; the 1984 United States Embassy annex bombing in Beirut; as well as the 9/11 attacks in the United States, for which federal courts ordered Iran to pay $7.5 billion to the families of the victims of the horrific attack. Hezbollah and Iran were also reportedly behind the 1992 attack on Israel’s Embassy in Buenos Aires during which 29 people were killed, as well as bombing the USS Cole.

It was the Iranian government that provided aid to Al Qaeda to carry out terrorist attacks against the US. A New York court found that “The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran (“Iran”) has a long history of providing material aid and support to terrorist organizations including al Qaeda, which have claimed responsibility for the August 7, 1998 embassy bombings.”

The New York federal court added that “Iran had been the preeminent state sponsor of terrorism against the United States and its interests for decades. Throughout the 1990s — at least — Iran regarded al Qaeda as a useful tool to destabilize U.S. interests. As discussed in detail below, the government of Iran aided, abetted and conspired with Hezbollah, Osama Bin Laden, and al Qaeda to launch large-scale bombing attacks against the United States by utilizing the sophisticated delivery mechanism of powerful suicide truck bombs.”

While former President Barack Obama was busy apologizing to, and appeasing Iran, the Islamic Republic continued its terror against the US by carrying out unneighborly acts such as detaining 10 U.S. Navy sailors, humiliating them, and releasing a video of the episode. The list goes on.

The US has nothing to apologize for. Why should the US appease the Iranian leaders? Should the mullahs be appeased for killing thousands of Americans? For continually taking Americans as hostages? For being the leading executioner of children in the world? For ranking the first in the world per capita when it comes to executing people? For being the world’s top state sponsor of terrorism? For making every possible effort to damage US national security and scuttle US foreign policy objectives?

The Iranian government’s hatred towards the US often seems the most important reason for its existence. As long as the ruling mullahs remain in power, the Islamic Republic will continue its acts of terror and deep antagonism against Americans, their Sunni neighbors, the lands they try to control — such as Iraq, Syria, Yemen, parts of Gaza and Venezuela, Lebanon — and the West.       (Gatestone Institute)

Breast Cancer Research Foundation Gala Draws Star-Studded Crowd

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) held its annual gala at the Park Avenue Armory with the $2,500 per ticket selling out weeks in advance. At 6:30 PM the red carpet filled up with luminaries such as Elizabeth Hurley, Carolyn Murphy and Tommy and Dee Hilfiger with a contemporaneous cocktail hour occurring in an adjacent room.

BCRF is a nonprofit organization committed to preventing and finding a cure for breast cancer by funding cancer research. It was founded in 1993 by Evelyn Lauder, whose husband Leonard has since contributed millions of dollars to help fight the battle his wife lost in November 2011. To date they have raised more than a half-a-billion dollars with the allocation of $63 million in grants for this past year alone. The signature pink ribbon associated with the organization has become synonymous with the movement and was created in 1992 by Lauder and her friend Alexandra Penney, the former editor of Self magazine.

Tonight, a pink ribbon was distributed to guests and many attendees wore pink attire with one man showing extreme solidarity by donning a pink mohawk. A “Founder’s Fund” has recently been established which is the first large-scale global effort seeking to delve into the biology of metastasis, with more than $30 million earmarked to date. The organization has made incredible strides in research; nonetheless, an estimated 42,260 people will die of breast cancer this year with 480 of those being men. The promising news is that the 5-year, 10-year and 15-year survival rates for women are 91%, 86% and 80% respectively.

Paul Arrouet and Dylan Lauren

Breast cancer still remains the second leading cause of cancer death in women, with lung cancer the first, and it is a uniquely female experience that bonds women of all ages and demographics. A new study being presented at the annual “American Society of Clinical Oncology” meeting next month has determined that a low fat diet containing 20% fat and increased consumption of fruits, vegetables and grains can reduce the long term rate of mortality in women diagnosed with breast cancer by 21%-hopeful statistics to say the least. The evening’s dinner wasn’t perfectly aligned with the recommendations of the Cancer Society but nonetheless guests enjoyed the plentiful desserts with a healthy vegetarian option readily available.

Hamish Bowles and singer Maxwell

There were some notable attendees who were still recovering from the Met Gala including Hamish Bowles, and Vera Wang. Bowles who dyed his hair a white-blonde was a standout in a Margiela getup at the Met Gala while tonight he went for a more classic black tuxedo. Wang, on the other hand, who will soon turn 70, gave the photographers an eyeful as she arrived in a floor length sheer off-white gown-hats off to Wang who flouted age appropriateness and looked sultry and sexy while doing so. Deborah Norville, was a bit more demure but equally stunning in a pink gown and spoke of her recent thyroid cancer diagnosis as her loving husband Karl Wellner stood nearby. Norville is an unmistakable warrior whose immense strength is accompanied by minimal fanfare and abundant kindness.

Ingrid and Jeff Gordon with Camilla Olsson

There were also some financial heavyweights in the crowd including Jonathan and Lizzie Tisch, Leonard and Judy Lauder, Jill and Harry Kargman, and Jeff and Ingrid Gordon. If you are a fan of musical genius David Foster then you were in luck because he put on a nearly one-hour show which featured Kenny G and Josh Groban via satellite and Pia Toscano and Katherine McPhee live. Foster is a consummate entertainer and called out singer Maxwell who gave a moving impromptu performance that paid homage to women who suffer from the dreaded disease by asking them to stand up.

Elizabeth Hurley

Foster loves to joke about his four marriages and took tremendous pride in his fiancee, Katharine McPhee’s, rendition of a song from the hit Broadway show “Waitress.” Elton John who used to perform at this show announced, via video, a $50,000 pledge-with all his retirement concerts I thought he might spring a little more. However, the numerous private and public auctions held ensured that more than $5 million was raised and guests headed home at 10:30 PM with a goody bag containing Estee Lauder skin creams, carb-filled energy beans and a pair of demure earrings.

The Axelrod continues its tradition of celebrating Memorial Day weekend with “Strike up the Band,” a swinging big band concert featuring award-winning lead vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli performing the immortal songs of George and Ira Gershwin.

The New York Times compared Ms. Stravelli to “Ella Fitzgerald in her prime,” and she has performed in many of New York’s most prestigious venues as well as concert halls around the world.

The concert will feature the Gershwins’ contribution to the Great American Songbook including dozens of hit songs including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “’S Wonderful,” “Summertime,” and “I Got Rhythm.”

“Strike up the Band,” at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center on Sunday, May 26 at 3pm will feature Stravelli joined by a 17-piece swing band, including acclaimed jazz pianist Dr. Art “Jazz” Topilow and clarinetist Carl Topilow, conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra.

“The songs of George and Ira Gershwin have remained a vital part of our American musical landscape for a century,” said APAC Artistic Director Andrew DePrisco.

No matter when they were composed, I believe that truly great songs never age; they continue to feel new and timeless.

“When a singer as naturally talented as Gabrielle Stravelli bring her special gifts to two dozen songs by the Gershwins—that’s a holiday event worthy of letting the drums roll out and the trumpets call!”

Award-winning vocalist and songwriter Gabrielle Stravelli (who grew up in Colts Neck, NJ) has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her rich sound, original compositions and her unique take on material from the Great American Songbook as well as by contemporary artists.

A trained actress, The New York Times noted that Stravelli’s “emotional intelligence coincides with a phenomenal voice that she wielded with an easygoing confidence and impeccable taste.”

This month, Stravelli released her fourth album, titled “Pick Up My Pieces,” which is a tribute to Willie Nelson.

Stravelli began singing at age 15 as a soloist with the Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea in New Jersey and has since performed on stages from Amsterdam to New York. She has been featured at the Caramoor Festival, Jazz at Chautauqua, Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night’s Swing, Birdland Jazz Club, 92Y’s Lyrics and Lyricists Series, Cornelia Street Cafe, 54 Below, Merkin Hall at Kaufman Center, the Iridium Jazz Club, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) where she opened for Esperanza Spalding and Cassandra Wilson. She sings with a “forceful emotional presence and a versatile, well-shaded voice,” says Adam Feldman of Time Out New York, and Peter Haas of Cabaret Scenes describes her voice as “clear and clean, expressive, supple, with unforced power.”

Tickets ranging from $39-$46 can be purchased online at www.axelrodartscenter.com; by phone (732) 531-9106, x14, or in person at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, 100 Grant Ave., Ocean Township. The theater offers ample, free on-site parking and is completely handicap accessible.
