In Poway, a Shabbat of Healing, Inspiration and Joy

Led by Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, congregants experience an “unforgettable” Shabbat

The previous Shabbat, they ran from the synagogue, fleeing a gunman’s bullets. This week, they filled it to capacity as Chabad of Poway, Calif., hosted a Shabbat that was at once solemn and joyous. In the days following the horrific shooting that claimed the life of Lori Kaye and injured three others, the rabbis and rebbetzins of Chabad of Poway rallied to the call of Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, the synagogue’s senior rabbi, himself grievously injured in the attack. Goldstein called on every Jew to fill synagogues and do a mitzvah for Poway, responding to darkness with light.

Shabbat candles to be lit by the many women and girls who attended services.

In Poway, it would be their biggest Shabbat ever.

“There was a certain blessing that was prevalent throughout Shabbat,” said Rabbi Mendy Rubenfeld, Chabad of Poway’s youth director. “Something that made everything go right.”

In just days, a Shabbat that would see 600 join services and 300 sit down to Friday-night dinner was organized by rabbis and rebbetzins who were simultaneously counseling congregants and themselves recovering from the trauma of the shooting. Their work was made easier by a plethora of willing helping hands, including some 30 players and coaches from the Poway High School Titans football team, who also met with Rabbi Goldstein.

“As busy as he’s been, he came out and spoke to them. It was amazing,” said Rubenfeld. “There’s an energy about him. He’s barely eating or sleeping; he’s still recovering from surgery. Yet while others around him are collapsing from exhaustion, he still going. When he could have been resting, he was talking with people, thanking each one individually.”

Worshippers walked streets lined with people showing their support, holding signs with messages of encouragement in a vigil timed to coincide with Friday evening Shabbat services. They walked down Chabad Way, the roadside thick with bouquets of flowers, the fences covered in posters—a show of solidarity by people from all backgrounds and religions.

“People’s hearts were open when they came,” said Rubenfeld, “and the experience did not let them down.”

Many Worshippers Arrived Early

Many worshippers came early, giving themselves time before Shabbat began to put on tefillin—many for the first time—and to light Shabbat candles in memory of Lori. By the time the sun set on Poway, hundreds of candles shone in front of signs that read, “Lights for Lori” and “Be gLORIous,” the theme of the evening.

The congregation was joined for the weekend by noted author and orator Rabbi Simon Jacobson, who served as the scholar-in-residence, as well as the Rabin Brothers, a cantorial duet whose harmonious melodies added layers of beauty and energy to the Shabbat prayers.

Hundreds turned out for a communal dinner.

When the congregation reached “Lecha Dodi,” the mystical hymn to the Shabbat, they erupted in songs of hope, optimism and unity—a show of resilience and rebuilding that went on for nearly half an hour: “How good and how pleasant it is when brothers dwell together;” “The world is a narrow bridge, the main thing is to have no fear;” “He who makes peace in His heavens, may He make peace for us.”

Kiddush followed in the patio, and an enormous 4-foot challah was sliced and distributed. As the visitors who had come to join the service went on their way, 300 community members sat down to Shabbat dinner. Joining Goldstein and Jacobson on the dais was Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, who led the room in an a capella rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

The following day saw another overflow crowd fill the synagogue for Shabbat-morning services. When the ark was opened to take out the Torah, a week exactly after the horrific shooting, Goldstein stood before it, tears streaming down his face, and gave a heart wrenching cry to G d. “You took Lori from us. How much longer must we endure?” Those present said they would never forget that impassioned cry.

It was a Shabbat that contained at once the solemnity of Yom Kippur, the joy of Simchat Torah, and the healing and comfort of Shabbat Nachamu, as Poway united to look back with gravity, and ahead with optimism and determination.

“It was very special,” said Rubenfeld. “Everyone who came will be forever moved by this Shabbat.”

Missile Attacks in Negev Underscore Need for New Neo-Natal Unit at Soroka Hospital

With over 600 missiles directed into Israel from Gaza in recent days, Soroka Medical Center, 20 miles from Gaza, was called upon to serve as Israel’s Iron Dome for Health. On Saturday night the hospital administrators were alerted to expect rockets aimed at Be’er Sheva. The hospital staff took immediate action: Staff braced for mass casualties and also relocated several of their most vulnerable units into temporary sheltered locations where they could continue to operate while protected from missile attack.

The extremely heart-wrenching decision was made to urgently relocate the Soroka Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (“NICU”) for the safety of the babies. Moving premature babies is dangerous, but the risk of injury from missiles is intolerable. This department is currently in an unprotected building, which means that the entire unit must be relocated to a protected location as demanded by the security situation. One of the most urgent needs at Soroka Medical Center today is to replace this outmoded building with a new, protected NICU facility. This project is of vital strategic importance to Soroka and to Israel.

Dr. Agneta Golan, the Chief of Soroka’s NICU states: “We have the detailed plans to build a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that will be state-of-the-art in all respects, large enough to meet our growing population while emphasizing the family-integrated approach that we have pioneered. I will not rest until we secure funding that will allow this project to proceed”. Even in the current over-crowded facility, Soroka’s NICU is outstanding and world-renowned for it’s innovation and human touch, serving the underserved and highly diverse population of the Negev and helping babies born at great risk recover and thrive. The planned new building will allow Soroka to expand their capacity and assure that all the babies of the Negev requiring NICU hospitalization can be treated at Soroka, near their home.

In the midst of relocation preparations, an air raid siren went off. Over 50 tiny babies and their mothers were rapidly moved from one unprotected area to a slightly better protected one highlighted the impossible situation of the unprotected NICU. The risk to the babies is significant, as many are connected to ventilators and various electric medication pumps. The IDF, Hospital staff, patient families and volunteers all participate in this fraught operation.

This glimpse of Soroka Medical Center behind the scenes reveals the unique dimensions of the challenges it faces and the vast service it provides to the Negev region. NYC Health + Hospitals Launches “Nurses4NYC” Recruitment Campaign

0
As part of National Nurses Week, NYC Health + Hospitals recently announced the system’s first official nurse recruitment campaign to help fill nurse positions and expand access to community-based primary care across the five boroughs.

As part of National Nurses Week, NYC Health + Hospitals recently announced the system’s first official nurse recruitment campaign to help fill nurse positions and expand access to community-based primary care across the five boroughs. The new recruitment campaign, Nurses4NYC, uses the tag line “Heal the City. Build a Career” to appeal to nurses devoted to the public hospital system’s mission: to extend equally to all New Yorkers, regardless of their ability to pay, comprehensive health services of the highest quality in an atmosphere of humane care, dignity, and respect. The targeted recruitment of nurses comes as NYC Health + Hospitals expands care management and ambulatory care and transforms its system to better serve New Yorkers. Overall, the recruitment effort will benefit the health systems patient population, and it contributes to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s initiative to guarantee health care for all New Yorkers.

The Nurse4NYC campaign focuses on four high need specialty areas where nurses are needed the most: Emergency Room/Trauma; Ambulatory Care; Home Care; and Correctional Health Services/Behavioral Health. The campaign will be supported by social media advertising on Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. Compelling mini-documentary videos on three NYC Health + Hospitals nurses will be promoted on the health system’s website, social media accounts, and used at recruitment events to showcase the diverse faces of the more than 9,000 members of the nursing staff. Further, NYC Health + Hospitals human resources will be reaching out to nursing school and recruiting at nursing fairs. Interested applicants can send their resumes directly via email to [email protected].

“As we celebrate nurses and the nursing profession during National Nurses Week, we launch Nurses4NYC campaign to recruit the next generation of dedicated and committed men and women who will care for our patients,” said Mitchell Katz, MD, president and chief executive officer of NYC Health + Hospitals. “We recently hired more than 340 new nurses. Our transformation as a health system demands that we invest in nurses and doctors to meet the future needs of our primary care focus. Nurses4NYC is a vibrant campaign that will attract those drawn to our mission of caring for one and all.”

“This is an important initiative,” said Assembly Health Committee Chair Richard N. Gottfried. “Adequate staffing is critical to quality of care. The Nurses4NYC campaign takes advantage of a variety of programs – from residencies to loan forgiveness – to ensure that facilities are well-staffed and that nurses are respected, well-trained, and able to advance up the career ladder.”

Ken Griffin Pays $238M for CPW Penthouse; All Time Record High for Home

Citadel founder Ken Griffin has paid $238 million penthouse at 220 Central Park South – an all-time record for a home.

By Andy B. Mayfair

Measuring 24,000 square feet, the property will serve as his home away from home while in New York City.

“He’s definitely a global trophy hunter and he bought what would arguably be now the number one building in New York,” Donna Olshan, president of Olshan Realty, told stockvisionary.com in an interview. “I don’t think that the fact that he buys an extraordinary trophy property speaks anything about the market. It’s just this is what he does and you have to look at it as a one-off. Hats off to the developer for that kind of sale.”

Only weeks ago, Griffin spent $122 million on a 200-year-old home overlooking London’s St James’s Park about half a mile from Buckingham Palace.

During an interview with Bloomberg TV, Griffin criticized the Left’s desire to try and solve problems by taxing the rich. “It’s always appealing as a populist card, let’s soak the rich. That’s an easy throwaway solution to problems, except it doesn’t work. I live in Cook County. One of the richest counties in the country in terms of cultural institutions or great universities, the University of Chicago and in nearby Evanston, Northwestern. And yet we’ve lost more college-educated students, sorry, graduates, than any county in the country over the last several years as people flee the corruption, cronyism and crime that has become part of the Illinois political landscape.”

In a reference to his newest penthouse property in New York, Griffin talked about the prospect of leaving his native Illinois. “How do you not? I have three little kids. They go to one of the best schools of Chicago. But there have been repeated incidences of actual, like, gang battles with guns three blocks from where they go to school.”

Despite that, he added, he does not wish to move his family or his company. “I have three children and we were talking about tax policies. My 8-year-old is delightfully precocious and she says, “Dad, why won’t we just move?” And I said, “Because we are going to stand and fight. We’re going to stand and fight for the policies and changes that will make this state better.”

Griffin is also quotes in ai-cio.com as being dissatisfied with the country’s education system, “which he charged the government has ruined, saddling students with huge debt and pumping up the cost of education at the same time.”

Students today, he told interviewer Michael Milken, are “completely disillusioned with their economic prospects given the huge amount of debt that they’ve been saddled with, courtesy of the US government, combined with the extraordinarily high cost of education they’ve been paying, courtesy of the US government.”

Fla Judge Rules to Keep Robert Kraft “Asian Spa” Video Sealed

Palm Beach County Judge Joseph Marx has ruled out making alleged videos of several men public – reportedly including Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft — at the Orchids of Asia spa in Florida.

By: Kevin Keilly

The pending case is against the spa’s accused madam and masseuse. The one-hundred-plus hours of video that law enforcement officials said were shot inside and outside the Jupiter, Fla., spa will remain unseen by the public.

The judge ruled that “the massive media firestorm that’s centered around the bust would taint the jury pool so much that, even considering Florida’s strong open-records laws, the videos will remain under seal,” reported the Boston Herald.

“Defendants are guaranteed a fair and impartial trial by jury, not a trial by community or in the press,” wrote Judge Marx in his order.

According to the Herald, the “highest-profile man of the dozens charged in the sting was Kraft, the 77-year-old billionaire owner of the Patriots. Kraft is fighting misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution by patronizing the alleged “rub-and-tug” spa twice in January on the weekend of the Patriots’ AFC Championship victory. Kraft, who has a condo in tony Palm Beach, pleaded not guilty earlier this year to the charges. He later issued a public apology, saying, “I know I have hurt and disappointed my family, my close friends, my co-workers, our fans and many others who rightfully hold me to a higher standard.”

The complaint alleges that the police department had obtained “overwhelming evidence that certain masseuses were engaging in low-level prostitution” well before commencing the “sneak and peek” operation, making video surveillance of all customers (including those getting massages without sexual activity) unnecessary, reported profootballtalk.nbcsports.com. “The complaint also alleges that the video generated by the surveillance operation has become, essentially, leverage in the broader effort to obtain plea deals from persons charged with soliciting prostitution, with the potential public release of the videos exacerbating the violation of the privacy rights of persons who received massages and nothing more.”

The latest chapter in the ongoing melodrama saw prosecuting attorneys accuse Kraft’s defense attorneys of lying. In fact, the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office filed a motion Tuesday asking that attorneys Alex Spiro and William Burck be held in contempt.

Prosecutors have claimed that in court last week, “Spiro falsely accused Jupiter police officer Scott Kimbark of telling other officers he would lie to justify the traffic stop of another Orchids of Asia Day Spa customer,” reported NBC News. “Burck denied the allegations Tuesday in a phone interview with NBC News, calling them “false, reckless and unethical.” “Alex Spiro and our firm will not be intimidated by the state attorney and their efforts to smear us with false allegations and will not deter us from defending our client from what we have contended are unconstitutional illegal acts,” Burck said, adding that he plans to file a response in court.”

NY Society Shuns Sackler Family; Blames Purdue Pharma for Opioid Crisis

The family behind Purdue Pharma is finding that no one wants their donations.

By: Gerald Tendlerberg

The Sacklers, long a formidable name in New York society and known for their generosity, have been – rightly or wrongly – blamed, at least in part, for the opioid crisis.

The billionaires behind OxyContin and other pharmaceuticals has donated tens of millions of dollars to such prestigious institutions and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Columbia University and the American Museum of Natural History.

Numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show more than 200,000 deaths from prescription opioids since the launch of OxyContin back in 1996. And part of that awful stench seems to have attached itself – rightly or wrongly – to the Sackler name.

The family has “become synonymous with the opioid crisis. And it’s costing them their social status in NYC,” the New York Post recently wrote. “More than 2,000 lawsuits target Purdue Pharma for aggressively marketing OxyContin despite the painkiller having known addictive qualities. New York and Massachusetts lawsuits filed by the states’ attorneys general revealed Purdue’s plan, titled “Project Tango,” to roll out medicine to counter OxyContin addiction — ensuring profit on both ends of the spectrum. Connecticut, Rhode Island and Utah have also taken legal action.”

Indeed, the Post quotes one source who reportedly told them, “I wouldn’t invite them to my house. I like to socialize with people who are not involved in trouble … and [who] try to improve society, not hurt it.”

The situation grew worse when Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and 2020 presidential candidate, decided to kick the family while it was done. She commented recently that she would like to see the Sackler family held accountable for its role in precipitating the opioid crisis.

“This crisis has been driven by greed, pure and simple,” Warren posted on medium.com. “If you don’t believe that, just look at the Sackler family. They’re billionaires. They own mansions around the world. Entire wings of museums in New York and London have been stamped with the family name. “But here’s the thing: the Sacklers made their money pushing OxyContin. Pushing it even as study after study demonstrated its addictive potential. Even as hundreds of thousands of Americans died.”

Warren added that she looks forward to an America “where when people like the Sacklers destroy millions of lives to make money, they don’t get museum wings named after them, they go to jail.”

Despite Claims of Price Fixing Teva Pharmaceuticals Stands Strong

Teva Pharmaceuticals says it did nothing wrong, and that it will defend against lawsuits that allege price fixing.

By: Jim McGuire

The lawsuits are coming from 44 states in the United States. In response, the firm’s stock shares sank to their lowest level since November 2017.

Teva’s Chief Financial Officer Mike McClellan said at a meeting in Israel that the legal storm it is facing is neither new nor criminal in nature. “There have been no developments in this area. We take these accusations seriously, and we are going to defend ourselves.”

According to the Israeli Haaretz newspaper, citing the complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Connecticut, Teva’s American unit and 19 other drug makers are alleged to have conspired to divide up the market for drugs to avoid competing and, in some cases, are said to have conspired to prevent prices from dropping or to raise them.

Teva has been developing and producing medicines to improve people’s lives for more than a century. It is a global leader in generic and specialty medicines with a portfolio consisting of over 35,000 products in nearly every therapeutic area. Around 200 million people around the world take a Teva medicine every day, and are served by one of the largest and most complex supply chains in the pharmaceutical industry.

“Prosecutors said Teva Pharmaceuticals USA had orchestrated matters to inflate drug prices – sometimes by more than 1,000% – and to stifle competition for generic drugs,” Haaretz wrote.

“The allegations in this new complaint, and in the litigation more generally, are just that – allegations,” Teva said in a statement afterwards. “Teva continues to review the issue internally and has not engaged in any conduct that would lead to civil or criminal liability.”

“The statements did little to assuage investor concerns, and Teva shares plummeted 10.7% in Tel Aviv Stock Exchange trading on Sunday to close at 46.66 shekels ($13.07),” the newspaper reported. “Teva also trades on the New York Stock Exchange, but news of the suit came after the market closed on Friday. The sharp drop in Teva shares, as well as at another pharma company, Opko Health, based on pre-opening orders, led to a six-minute delay in the start of TASE trading on Sunday. Opko finished 13.8% lower at 7.56 shekels on unrelated news. The TASE’s benchmark TA-35 index fell 0.6% for the day in light trading.”
The company’s management continued to look forward, announcing just three days ago the launch of a generic version of Delzicol®1 (mesalamine) delayed-release capsules, 400 mg, in the U.S.

Teva EVP and Head of North America Commercial, Brendan O’Grady said in a press release, “Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease and we’re proud to provide another treatment option for patients.”

“Desperate Housewives” star Felicity Huffman Pleads Guilty in College Admissions Scheme

“Desperate Housewives” star Felicity Huffman pleaded guilty Monday in the college admissions bribery scheme, according to an AP report. She is one of the most visible  names to do so in a scandal that has exposed the lengths to which some wealthy parents will go to get their children into top universities.

Edited by: JV Staff

The AP reported that the Emmy-winning actress, 56, could face prison time after she admitted to participating in the nationwide scam, in which authorities say parents bribed coaches, rigged entrance exams or both to game the admissions system.

Huffman pleaded guilty in federal court to paying an admissions consultant $15,000 to have a proctor correct her older daughter’s answers on the SAT. The AP reported that she also considered going through with the plan for her younger daughter before ultimately deciding not to, authorities say.

The consultant, Rick Singer, arranged for the cheating by having students obtain permission for extra time on the exams through diagnoses for things like learning disabilities, and then taking the exams at his testing center, prosecutors say.

In court, according to the AP report, Huffman explained her daughter had been seeing a neuropsychologist for years and getting extra time on tests since she was 11 — an apparent attempt to explain that her daughter’s doctor had no part in the scheme.

“I just didn’t want to create the impression that neuropsychologists have any part in this,” a tearful Huffman said before stopping to collect herself.

Sentencing was set for Sept. 13. Because she agreed to plead guilty, prosecutors said they would recommend four months in prison, but the judge could also choose not to put her behind bars at all.

She arrived at court holding the hand of her brother Moore Huffman Jr. and did not say anything to journalists. In court, she wore a gray dress and a sweater and sat flanked by her attorneys while her brother watched from the front row. Her husband, actor William H. Macy, didn’t attend.

Huffman had apologized in a statement last month and said she will accept the consequences. She said she “betrayed” her 18-year-old daughter, who was not aware of her plan.

“This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life. My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty,” Huffman said.

Investigators have said Macy, 69, was with her when admissions consultant Rick Singer explained how he could arrange for the cheating because he “controlled” a test center. Both Huffman and Macy agreed to the plan, authorities say, but Macy has not been charged. Prosecutors have not explained why.

California businessman Devin Sloane also pleaded guilty Monday to paying $250,000 in bribes to get his son into the University of Southern California as a fake water polo recruit. Officials say he bought athletic gear online and worked with a designer to create a bogus photo of his son playing the sport for the application.

Huffman and Sloane are among 14 parents who agreed to plead guilty in the biggest admissions scandal ever prosecuted in the U.S., known as “Operation Varsity Blues.” The scandal involving prestigious schools across the country has also embroiled prominent college coaches.

The parents are accused of paying Singer to bribe coaches in exchange for helping their children get into schools as fake athletic recruits. Singer also paid off entrance exam administrators to allow someone else to take tests for students or fix their answers, authorities say.

Some parents and coaches who have agreed to plead guilty are cooperating with prosecutors against current or future co-defendants, but Huffman is not known to be among them.

Singer has pleaded guilty to charges including racketeering conspiracy. He began working with authorities last year and secretly recorded his conversations with actress Lori Loughlin, Huffman and other parents in the hopes of getting a lenient sentence.

Some parents have decided to fight the charges, including Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, who have pleaded not guilty to paying $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits even though neither of them is a rower.

Loughlin and Giannulli, who are also charged with money laundering conspiracy, have not publicly commented on the allegations.

Huffman was a star of the popular ABC series “Desperate Housewives,” which won her an Emmy Award in 2005. She was nominated for an Oscar for playing a transgender woman in the movie “Transamerica.”

Experts differ on whether Huffman’s swift acceptance of responsibility will leave her with an acting career.

After she agreed to plead guilty, Netflix officials said a film starring her, “Otherhood,” would not be released as planned in April and a new date would be determined. A limited series featuring Huffman on the Central Park Five case is expected to debut this month. (AP)

NYPD COMMITS TO STEP UP EFFORTS TO DETER COPYCAT ANTISEMITIC CRIMES

0

In a span of three days, two Jewish residents of Williamsburg have been physically assaulted in unprovoked incidents because of their appearance as Chasidic Jews. Anti-Semitic attacks in the Williamsburg Jewish community are growing in frequency and boldness.

In response, the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn held an emergency meeting today with NYPD Chief of Department Terence Mohanan and Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison.

The meeting was attended by Williamsburg’s elected officials: Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, State Senator Brian Kavanagh and Councilmember Antonio Reynoso, Chaim Deutsch, the Chair of NYC Council Jewish Caucus, Kalman Yeger and Simcha Eichenstein, Evelyn Cruz – representing Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Jonathan Boucher – Chief of Staff to Councilman Stephen Levin, Boris Santos – Chief of Staff to State Senator Julia Salazar, and many others.

Rabbi David Niederman President of the UJO of Williamsburg said:

“While the scourge of anti-Semitism is growing at an alarming rate across the country and around the world, we must face the reality that here at home in New York City we have a serious problem of anti-Semitic attacks on identifiably Jewish members of our community. People merely walking on the streets here feel like sitting ducks, worrying that they must look over their shoulder in fear of being hurt because of their faith.

“We call on the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force to thoroughly investigate these two incidents. Should the evidence show that the only reason these victims were attacked was that they were obviously Jewish, Brooklyn DA should charge and prosecute the perpetrators to the full extent of the law, including hate crime enhancements.

“We further call on the New York State Legislature to clarify the definitions within the Hate Crime statutes. When investigators determine that an assault occurred without an obvious motive – for example robbery, gang violence, etc. – and the only possible motive was hate, prosecutors should be able to readily charge perpetrators with hate crimes.

“I thank Chief of Department Monahan and his top chiefs and commanders for coming to Williamsburg to speak with us and appreciate that he was receptive to our request to increase NYPD resources in Williamsburg. We can only put an end to these attacks in partnership with the NYPD, and I am confident that Williamsburg will be receiving the attention it deserves. We made several other suggestions to better address the safety and security needs of the community that should be implemented on an ongoing basis.

“I am also grateful to our elected officials for coming and standing up to hate and for the vital role they play in securing additional funding for security cameras, which is one of the most crucial tools to catching those responsible for sowing fear and hate against Jewish residents. “

Among the attendees from the Police Department were: Chief Jeffrey Maddrey Commanding Officer, Patrol Borough Brooklyn North, Deputy Inspector, Mark Molinari – Commanding Officer, Hate Crime Task Force, Captain Timothy Skretch – Commanding Officer 90thPrecinct, Deputy Inspector Charles A. Minch, Commanding Officer 79th Precinct.

The police commanders thanked the Williamsurg Shomrim for their hard work to recover footage and help find witnesses after incidents in the community, which is critical to solve these crimes and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The following state and city representatives also attended: Michael Snow represented Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office, Jonathan Shabshaikhes represented the office of Attorney General Letita James, Mr. Lincoln Restler, Deputy Chief of Staff to Mayor Bill de Blasio, Howard Pollack, Liaison to NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Pinchas Ringel, Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, Pinchas Hikind Office of NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, David Klestzick – Deputy Chief of the Trial Division for Brooklyn DA Gonzalez, and ADA Kelli Muse, Chief of Hate Crime Bureau. The meeting was also attended by, Mr. David Pollock – Associate Executive Director of the JCRC NY, Michael Cohen – Director, Simon Wiesenthal Center – Eastern Region, and Avi Greenstein, of the Borough Park JCC.

The NYPD committed additional resources to houses of worship and the neighborhood, and to man the security booth in the neighborhood, flooding the zone in order to deter from any additional attacks. Councilman Stephen Levin also committed for additional funding for security cameras in the area.

“To all evil-doers know well: when you are committing a crime in Williamsburg, you will very likely be in camera, the footage will be reviewed and publicized, and you will definitely be caught,” said Rabbi David Niederman. “Several people are in jail already for months, for hate attacks that they committed in November. Before you want to express your hate, take in mind that there are severe consequences and you will regret that. Hate is not tolerated here.”

High School Students Yell “I love Hitler!” at Hasidic Family in Brooklyn

A Hasidic man walking with his four sons (aged 7 to 14) from synagogue on Saturday morning was harassed by a couple of high school students who yelled “I love Hitler!” at them twice.

According to the victim, Mr. Rosenberg (not actual name to protect victim’s identity) “As I was walking through the campus grounds of the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School two Asian students began yelling at me and my kids ‘I love Hitler! I love Hitler!’ My kids were terrified and I was in shock, so I asked them to repeat themselves to make sure I heard correctly, but the students put hoodies on and began walking away. I went immediately to report the incident to the school’s administration, and was told to file a police report at the 66th precinct, which I did later that evening at the end of the Sabbath.”

Because the harassment was verbal all that can be done by the police is to document the case. If this doesn’t outrage the sensibilities of good and decent New Yorkers and Americans then it may be time to accept this as the new normal. But are we ready to accept that? Are we ready to accept that Jews being harassed for being Jewish is commonplace in 2019 NYC? So far, city leadership is failing to deal with the outburst of antisemitic hate crimes, but it’s not too late. Yet.

Celebrities Compete in “Stunning Fashion” at Met Gala Extravaganza

Despite the Met Gala occurring a week ago, its effects are still reverberating today.

The pink carpet and swan-filled dining room complete with pink roses lent a unique air to this annual event.  While reviews of the “Camp” exhibition have been less than stellar, with claims that the collection failed to adequately delve and explore the origins of camp, analysis of the gala has been more favorable with many of the opinion this year was unrivaled.  Gucci, the corporate underwriter, was the clear winner of the evening, dressing the most guests-25 men and women- and receiving 45,000 mentions on social media.

By: Lieba Nesis

Dolce and Gabbana, and their attire, was noticeably absent from the carpet as they have been involved in numerous controversies including their racially charged Asian campaign which started a boycott in China.  Certainly, this year’s outrageousness and flamboyance was unparalleled. At $30,000 a ticket the gala was sold-out months in advance and the more than 550 guests were the most eclectic group ever seen at this happening.  Wintour veered away from the white-hedge-fund-guy-and-his-wife-model, and instead introduced the public to a group that was multi-faceted and unpredictable. Surprisingly she didn’t invite Betsey Johnson, Bjork, Boy George or Cyndi Lauper-all of whom were forerunners of the “camp” trend but apparently lacked the cool factor.

Photographer Annie Liebovitz was front and center sitting near curator Andrew Bolton being that she was the partner of Susan Sontag who penned the Poem “Notes on Camp” upon which the exhibit is based.  Some other guests included a surprisingly large contingent of Asian Americans including Henry Golding, Lana Candor, Awkwafina, Coral Chung, and Gemma Chan; a number of Latinos including JLo and ARod, Maluma, Thalia and Camila Coelho: and a healthy representation of African American artists including Danai Gurira, Lizzo Beating, Bevy Smith, Ava Duvernay, Kiki Layne and Jeremy Harris-many of these were first time invitees. This was also the first year drag queens Violet Chachki, RuPaul and Aquaria were welcomed on the red carpet.

Moreover, Bollywood and the Indian community were well represented with Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Isha Ambani making big splashes.  Isha Ambani is the daughter of the richest man in Asia, Mukesh Ambani, and recently got married in a wedding that cost over $100 million-way to go Anna.  There were other billionaires in the crowd including the indomitable Jeff Bezos, Sean Parker, Francois-Henri Pinault and Mike Bloomberg whose combined net worth totals over $250 billion-more than the GDP of many countries.

I am still grappling with the absence of Beyonce, Blake Lively, Rihanna, Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker-especially since they failed to provide valid excuses with Sarah and Madonna at a New York dinner two nights before.  Where were Amal and George, Anne Hathaway and Adam, Bradley and Irina (Irina was alone)? Why did Gwyneth who bravely called the Met Gala un-fun in 2013 decide to return in 2017 and 2019 looking glum and receiving little press attention- her Florence Nightingale Chloe gown looked like a secondhand wedding dress; if you do make a comeback make sure to look great Gwynnie or stay home.

Some other stars who went virtually unnoticed due to their mediocre attire included Penelope Cruz in a dreadful black-and-white Chanel, Karlie Kloss in an H&M looking Dapper Dan Gucci, Carey Mulligan, Kerry Washington (don’t go Tory Burch when you are going camp), Katie Holmes (a been there done that Zac Posen), Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana (the worst), the Olsen twins, Gal Gadot and Emma Stone (in a Louis Vuitton custom jumpsuit that looked like a Studio 54 reject).

Cardi B missed the mark in a three-meter long red floor length Thom Browne couture gown that took 35 people more than 3,000 hours to create-she looked like a giant hot water bottle.  Similarly, Ralph Lauren misinterpreted camp as “cowboy” dressing his son David and Patrick Schwarzenegger in cowboy hats and clothing. Marc Jacobs, who showed up in 2012 in a black lace dress that caused an earthquake in the fashion industry, played it safe this year in a mundane black tuxedo-shame on him-and dressed Rita Ora and Kate Moss in similarly ho-hum attire.

Those with headgear looked dreadful including JLo who thought her boobs and butt might do the talking and Celine Dion who looked like a washed up Vegas showgirl.  Kim Kardashian who copied Beyonce’s 2016 Met Gala Givenchy latex dress in a skintight Mugler gave some excuse about wanting to look like a wet Sophia Loren when it was clear she was just trying to show off her new breast and butt implants and lipoed waist.  The ultimate in “camp” might be Kanye’s wearing of a $50 Dickies jacket called “The Eisenhower” modeled after a World War II Style and Frank Ocean’s similarly dressed down black zip up.

The winners of the evening were those who went all out and received the most press attention doing so while competing with a room full of celebrities and that prize would go to Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Billy Porter, Jared Leto, Ezra Miller and Janelle Monae.  Katy Perry wore two outrageous Moschino looks including a functioning chandelier and a full-on hamburger outfit. Lady Gaga turned her entrance into an event walking three blocks to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a flowing Brandon Maxwell cape dress with a 25-foot train.  She unveiled her four-layered look in a 15-minute presentation that was rehearsed months in advance-even Wintour admitted that was impossible to top.

Jared Leto was similarly unabashed with his 3D Printed Gucci personalized head which cost $11,000 to make and over six months to create.  In the realm of faces, Janelle Monae and Ezra Miller gave us plenty of eye candy with Monae’s Christian Siriano look replete with a fluttering eyelash and a hat full of hats and Ezra Miller’s countenance including seven eyes painted onto his face.  Back to Kim Kardashian who revealed her dreadful Met Gala look took over a half a year to create and required corset breathing lessons from French couturier Mister Pearl. The getup contained a nude corset complete with Spanx and required three assistants to strap her into the bodysuit.

Someone else who needed some help fitting into his Versace tuxedo was Alex Rodriguez who revealed he went on a twenty-four hour water fast to lose 6.5 pounds in two days for the Met Gala in order to fit into a size 44 when he normally wears 48.  He also took two yoga classes, ran the stairs for an hour and wore a suit to increase sweating-what men do for beauty.

A 72-year-old  who has done plenty to maintain her beauty is Cher who regaled the audience with her “I wonder what your granny is doing tonight?” comment as Lady Gaga stripped to her skivvies and recited a Susan Sontag poem before introducing her.  As far as entertainment, Cher this year and Madonna last, is not up to par with a $30,000 per ticket event. Serena Williams, sans bottomwear, introduced Ru Paul another disappointment for a super A- list evening. After all the excitement of the night had concluded, attending a dinner the following evening where nobody appeared in million dollar costumes composed of mustard bottles or fake body parts left me slightly disappointed.

“Target” Plans Stores for Astoria & Elmhurst; Queens Residents Push Back

Target has stores planned for Astoria and Elmhurst — and lots of people don’t like it.

Both locations are schedule to open for business no later than 2022. The locations are excellent, close to transportation and a wide variety of other retail businesses. The fear is that the big box retailer will steal employees and hurt the communities.

By Pat Savage

At present, the chain has 78 stores in the greater New York area, and over 17,000 employees. According to the company more than a dozen of those stores are so-called smaller-format outlets that measure about 40,000 square feet, roughly a third the size of a full-size store. Eight more smaller locations are planned in New York City.

“These corporations — Amazon, Target, Walmart, whoever — treat our neighborhoods like corporate playgrounds, and think our people are just open wallets,” said Patricia Chou, an organizer with Queens Neighborhoods United, in an interview with The City.

As to be expected, rallies were held on Friday afternoon to protest Target’s imminent arrival.

“In one particular bustling corner of Queens at 31st Street and Ditmars Boulevard, the arrival of Target would replace five active businesses–including a Key Food supermarket–and some vacant storefronts,” reports the web site 6sqft.com. “The busy intersection is already home to several banks, a CVS and a Starbucks. Last March, the owner of the property in question signed a memorandum with Target for a 15-year lease on a 47,000-square-foot, three-floor construction project, and there is an application for a demolition permit on file with the Department of Buildings. The new development includes 45,000 square feet of retail space in addition to Target.”

As 6sqft.com continues, “Many employees of the Key Food store are members of UFCW Local 1500. Larry Mandell, the store’s franchise owner, says he’d like to stay in the space, but his lease expires in October 2020, and he hasn’t heard back from the landlord regarding renewal negotiations.”

Meanwhile, expansion continues. The chain is preparing to open a new store in Washington Heights in 2020. It will occupy an approximately 25,000-square-foot space on West 181st Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, a Target spokesperson said.

The opening was first reported by real estate publication The Real Deal, which spotted a new lease filing with the city Department of Finance. Target secured a 15-year lease at 600 W. 181st St. with landlord Maverick Management Corporation, Patch.com reports. It adds, “Target will have the option to extend the fifteen-year lease for an additional 15 years in three terms of five years, according to public records. The lease does not specify how much Target will pay for the space.”

US Expects China Tariff Retaliation

The U.S. said Sunday it expects that China will retaliate with increased tariffs on U.S. exports after President Donald Trump sharply boosted levies on Chinese products headed to the United States.

By; Ken Bredemeier

Chief White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told “Fox News Sunday” that “both sides will suffer” from the escalating trade war between the U.S. and China, the world’s two biggest economies.

In the U.S., he said that “maybe the toughest burdens” are on farmers who sell soybeans, corn and wheat to China. But he said the Trump administration has “helped them before on lost exports” with $12 billion in subsidies and that “we’ll do it again if we have to and if the numbers show that out.”

Trump on Friday more than doubled tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods, boosting the rate from 10 percent to 25 percent, while also moving to impose tariffs on an additional $300 billion of Chinese products, although Kudlow said it could take months for the full effect of the tariffs to be felt. China had previously imposed taxes on $110 billion of American products, but has not said how it might retaliate against Trump’s latest increase in tariffs.

Trade talks between the two economic super powers have been going on in Beijing and Washington for months, but they recessed again in the U.S. capital on Friday without a deal being reached.

“We were moving well, constructive talks and I still think that’s the case,” Kudlow said. “We’re going to continue the talks as the president suggested.”

Kudlow said Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are likely to discuss trade issues at the G-20 summit in Japan at the end of June.

The economic adviser renewed U.S. claims that China had backtracked from earlier agreements reached in the talks, forcing negotiators to cover “the same ground this past week.”

“You can’t forget this: This is a huge deal, the broadest scope and scale…. two countries have ever had before,” Kudlow said. “But we have to get through a lot of issues. For many years, China trade was unfair, non-reciprocal, unbalanced in many cases, unlawful.”

The U.S. has claimed that China steals technology and forces U.S. companies to divulge trade secrets it uses in its own production of advanced technology products.

On Saturday, Trump suggested that China could be waiting to see if he wins reelection next year but said Beijing would be “much worse” off during a second term of his in the White House.

“I think that China felt they were being beaten so badly in the recent negotiation that they may as well wait around for the next election, 2020, to see if they could get lucky & have a Democrat win,” he said, “in which case they would continue to rip-off the USA for $500 Billion a year.”

“Such an easy way to avoid Tariffs?” the U.S. leader said, “Make or produce your goods and products in the good old USA. It’s very simple!” (VOA)

Report: US Won’t Oppose Israeli Sovereignty Over Communities in Judea & Samaria

Israel’s Channel 12 reported on Sunday that the United States signaled it won’t stand in the way of Israeli moves to extend sovereignty over Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.

By: WIN Staff

According to a Channel 12 report on Sunday, President Donald Trump’s long-awaited “deal of the century” Mideast peace plan envisions all Jewish communities remaining under Israeli control, with Arab towns remaining under the Palestinians’ jurisdiction.

With regard to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s campaign vow to extend sovereignty to Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, the Channel 12 report claimed that the U.S. will not actively oppose or object to such a move.

Currently, close to half a million Israeli Jews live in Judea and Samaria, in small towns and larger communities alike. Israel secured the territory when it defeated Jordan in 1967’s Six-Day War.

The Channel 12 report indicated that the U.S. would stop short of endorsing Israeli sovereignty over or annexation of communities in Judea and Samaria, and that Netanyahu is expected to proceed with his plan to extend Israeli civil law in those areas.

The U.S. recently recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which had been under Israeli control since the Jewish state defeated Syria in the Six-Day War.

Whether or not Trump’s Mideast peace plan conforms to the numerous purported leaks regarding its terms remains to be seen, with the plan’s official roll-out expected in June, following the conclusion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Trump advisers such as Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt have dismissed many of the leaks as false, but have also communicated that the plan will take an unconventional approach to the Israel-Palestinian peace process. (World Israel News)

Exposing the Danger of Rep Ilhan Omar to the Furtherance of Visceral Jew Hatred in America

0

Since her election to congress in November of 2016, Rep Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has not only gained national recognition as the first Somali born Muslim woman ever elected to Congress, but has drawn international attention for her highly controversial, patently erroneous and bellicose comments concerning Israel and Jews in general. Omar follows the BDS line of propaganda and spews forth spurious accusations concerning Israel’s purported oppression of the Palestinians while she openly expresses her wishes to introduce legislation that would isolate Israel from the international community. She has consistently said that “it is all about the Benjamins” which translates into “the Jews have all the money and power.” These classic anti-Semitic tropes and other remarks of a Jew hating nature are darkly reminiscent of the Nazi propaganda machine, however they have come to represent the new, anti-Israel posture that has become acceptable in the ranks of the political party that she is affiliated with. Her support of Hamas and other terror organizations are also cause for great concern as well as her general anti-American values stance. Tragically, she has the full-throated support of many left-wing anti-Israel organizations and the deleterious impact she has already made continues to flourish unabated.

Below, please find articles that will help you become acquainted with an elected official who is nothing but a paradigm of pure hate of everything that we, as Americans. hold dear.
