Louis Potters, MD FACR, FASTO, FABS, has been appointed chair of radiation medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital as part of Northwell Health’s investment into expanding its cancer program in Manhattan. Dr. Potters also serves in several senior roles within Northwell, including chair of radiation medicine, senior vice president and deputy physician-in-chief of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, as well as medical school chair for radiation medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

At Lenox Hill, Dr. Potters will grow the radiation oncology department by incorporating state-of-the-art technology, new highly trained faculty, more clinical trials, and multidisciplinary programs that offer patients personalized care. Dr. Potters, who brings 32 years of expertise to his new role and is internationally recognized for prostate cancer radiation oncology, will oversee the operations and clinical management of the department as it transitions from Lenox Hill Hospital to the new Northwell Medical Pavilion at 77th Street that’s slated to open on the Upper East Side in the fall of 2025.

Northwell Health has invested in groundbreaking technology that enhances cancer treatment with a new Varian Halcyon® linear accelerator, a machine used to deliver external beam radiation to patients with cancer. This advanced device delivers image-guided radiotherapy four times faster than standard machines. The treatment system uses high-energy X-rays to focally treat cancer cells without harming surrounding organs and tissues.

Lenox Hill participates in the Smarter Radiation Oncology® program at Northwell that ensures each patient receives exceptional, personalized care with faculty-based peer review of each patient.

To further grow Lenox Hill’s prostate cancer program, Dr. Potters is working with the department of urology in instituting innovative initiatives designed to offer state of the art collaborative and multidisciplinary care. The Prostate Cancer Collaborate Care program offers patients simultaneous dual consults with radiation oncologists and urologists to help patients choose among the multiple treatment options available.

Lenox Hill Hospital’s cancer program is ranked in the top 50 in the country by U.S. News and World Report in its 2022-23 rankings. The hospital’s colon, lung, prostate and gynecologic cancer surgery programs were all designated high performing by the consumer review publication. Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting consumers, physicians, and health systems, ranked Lenox Hill among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for prostate surgery for the past eight years in a row. The designation, based on outstanding clinical outcomes, places the facility in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for prostate surgery.
