NYC Election Results – US House, State Assembly & State Senate Races Dissected

Edited by: Fern Sidman

Now that the 2022 midterm elections are in the proverbial rear window, what can we glean from the results of these hard fought races? One thing is for sure. For those pundits and other politicos who predicted a “Red Tsunami” it appears that their prognostications were slightly off. The results of this election shined a spotlight on the stark political divisions that have gripped this nation and the growing polarization that continues to infect us.

For New York voters who cast their votes in the highly competitive gubernatorial race, as well as some underreported races for US Senate, New York Attorney General and a veritable slew of local races for State Assembly and the US House of Representatives, among others, the results embodied the sign of the times.

Kathy Hochul, a Democrat who became New York’s first female governor when she succeeded Andrew M. Cuomo after his resignation, emerged victorious in the race against Representative Lee Zeldin of Long Island.  With 95% of the votes counted the incumbent Hochul garnered 52.8% of the vote which translates into 3,011,672 votes. The Republican challenger Rep. Lee Zeldin received 47.2% of the vote or 2,688,543 votes.  The total number of votes reported was 5,700, 215, as was reported by the New York Times.

The issues of rampant crime, the controversial bail reform laws, inflation and high taxes dominated the race.

In the race for US Senate, as was predicted the incumbent Senator Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, who also happens to be the Senate majority leader received 56.2% of the votes  (3,179,242 votes) and his Republican challenger Joe Pinion garnered 43.1% of the votes (2,435,385 votes). These statistics reflect the results with 90% of the vote counted.

In the race for New York State Attorney General, with 82.36% counted, the Democratic incumbent Letitia James sailed to victory with 54.3% of the vote (3,039,604 votes) and her Republican opponent Michael Henry received 45.7% of the vote (2,561,091 votes).

A commercial litigation attorney. Michael Henry has been endorsed by various police unions but faced long odds against one of the state’s most powerful Democrats, Fox News reported.

James, 64, made history when she took office in January 2019. Fox News reported that she is the first Black woman elected to statewide office, the state’s first Black attorney general and the first woman elected to the post.
