NYC Tops List for the Most Expensive Uber Rides in the US; Company Sites Surging Gas Prices

Edited by: TJVNews.com

As many New York City residents are well aware of, the prices of Uber rides have literally skyrocketed since the advent of the Covid-19 virus.

As New Yorkers and others shied away from riding on New York City buses and subways, they sought out Uber as a transportation option. As such, Uber significantly raised their fare pricing.

The New York Post reported that according to a study of pricing that was shared with them, the average Uber trip costs more per mile in the New York City is higher than any other city in the United States.

The study which was provided to the newspaper by NetCredit said that Uber riders in the five boroughs are paying an average of $34.74 for a 6.2-mile ride, making New York the most expensive city in the United States in which to get a ride in a private conveyance.

What is contributing to the higher fares in New York City are, according to Uber, the rising prices of gas and a consistent shortage of those who are driving for Uber. The Post reported that is also likely contributing to the higher Uber fares is that there is a minimum wage in New York City and a congestion surcharge policy.

New Yorkers are now resorting to taking yellow cabs, however, the Post reported that fewer yellow cabs are on New York City streets than there were prior to the pandemic and because Uber took a big bite out of their business when the company started to increase its visibility.

The Post reported that due to the increase in demand for yellow cab service, the Taxi & Limousine Commission is seeking to raise the taxi fares for rides to local airports.

While New York City takes the slot for the highest Uber fares in the country, the Post also reported that in second place is Nashville, Tennessee with $34,63 for the same 6.2 mile ride in Uber. Following Nashville on the list of expensive cities in which to take an Uber are Denver at $33.91, Seattle at $32.63 and Baltimore at $27.27.

The Post contacted Uber for a response on the higher fares but they did not immediately receive a response from the ride share company.

The NetCredit study looked at prices during rush hour, workday afternoons and weekends and examined 6.2-mile rides because they are the equivalent of 10 kilometers, as was reported by the Post.

30 US cities were studied by NetCredit and it seems as though the most affordable rides could be found in Texas. The Post reported that the average 6.2-mile ride in El Paso was just $12.56, while identical rides were $13.00 in Fort Worth, $17.87 in Dallas, $13.52 in Houston and $23.92 in Austin.

On an international level, the city of Bern in Switzerland, which is the capital clocked in with the most expensive 10-kilometer ride at $42.80. Following Bern was the Norwegian capital of Oslo at $32.17, then Tokyo, Japan at $30.84, Paris at $28.89 and Dublin, Ireland at $28.58.

The least expensive Uber fares, according to the Post report were in the city of Islamabad in Pakistan at $1.39. Other super reasonable fares could be found in the Nigerian city of Abuja at $2.45, New Delhi in India at $2.47, the city of Colombo in Sri Lanka at $3.02 and in San Jose, Costa Rica at $3.34

The Post also reported that in May of this year, Uber said in a surprise move that it planned to add taxicabs to its app in New York City. Customers will pay roughly the same amount for taxi rides as they would for standard Uber rides
