U.S. News & World Report last week issued its annual report of high performing hospitals, recognizing seven NYC Health + Hospitals facilities in various specialties as “high performing.” NYC Health + Hospitals’ acute care facilities were rated as “high performing” in psychiatry, congestive heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The recognition was published as part of the national magazine’s “Best Hospitals” issue for 2020-21. The annual rankings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care. For the 2020-21 ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 10 procedures and conditions. This recognition builds on the health system’s commitment to provide high-quality, comprehensive care to all New Yorkers regardless of ability to pay.

“These recognitions are only made possible because of the commitment and passion from our clinicians and staff to provide comprehensive, high-quality care to all New Yorkers,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “Our providers work tirelessly to not only treat patients, but also build relationships with our communities. We look forward to continue to improve access to life-saving care that further enriches a person’s wellbeing and make our communities healthier.”

Facilities and their category recognized as high performing are:

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue for psychiatry, congestive heart failure, and COPD

NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island for congestive heart failure and COPD

NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst for congestive heart failure and COPD

NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem for congestive heart failure and COPD

NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County for congestive heart failure and COPD

NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln for congestive heart failure and COPD

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan for COPD

“I am proud of our team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue for the continued work in congestive heart failure and COPD and in Bellevue’s noted specialty of Behavioral Health care,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue CEO William Hicks. “Much of the work we do here has an emphasis on the most vulnerable of populations, making this acknowledgement even more meaningful. We are thankful to be among national leaders in providing excellent care for these services.”

“Each day we strive to offer exceptional care and meet all the healthcare needs of the residents of South Brooklyn,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya.  “Given the prevalence of cardiac and pulmonary issues in our neighborhood, easy access to excellent care is essential to our community. We believe that this recognition by U.S. News & World Report in both congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease confirms that we are more than prepared to meet this important need for our patients.”

“We are honored to be named by US News & World Report as one of the nation’s top hospitals for treating patients with COPD and heart failure,” said Israel Rocha, Vice

President of NYC Health + Hospitals and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, who deliver patient-centered, compassionate care to all those who need it within our diverse community.”

“Our multidisciplinary care team has worked consistently and diligently on improving outcomes for our patients dealing with chronic heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, said NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem CEO Eboné M. Carrington. “We are humbled to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s ‘Best Hospitals in America 2020-2021’ list.  Having NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem acknowledged solidifies our commitment to safety.”

“We are honored to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a high performing hospital for congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings CEO Sheldon P. McLeod. “I am proud of our medical teams in cardiology and respiratory specialties, for being leaders in their fields. Their passion and commitment to patient-focused care are invaluable, particularly during these challenging times in healthcare.”

“We are honored to be ranked consistently by U.S. News because it informs our patients that despite the challenges of the times, we maintain the highest standards, stay true to our core values and responsibilities for both heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln CEO Milton Nunez. “With the pandemic, we are discovering uncommon forms of heart disease, some manifesting as heart failure from COVID. This illustrates how important our ongoing commitment to share and keep current with breakthrough information improves outcomes for our patients.”

“Our pulmonary and critical care team has been at the forefront of responding to some of our most vulnerable patients with respiratory illnesses,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan CEO Christopher Roker. “We are very proud of this recognition from U.S. News & World Report and of our dedicated staff’s comprehensive, patient-centered work on behalf of our community in East Harlem and upper Manhattan.”

The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as risk-adjusted outcome rates, volume, quality of nursing and other care-related indicators.

“In a community like ours with large numbers of seniors, immigrants, and low-income families and individuals, it is critically important that we have a public hospital that offers the kind of quality, specialized care that our residents need and deserve,” said Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz. “I am pleased that NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island is among the facilities recognized by U.S. News and World Report for its treatment of congestive heart failure and COPD, and I know that this information will assist the people of our community in making an informed choice about where to seek help for these life-threatening conditions.”

“I congratulate NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst for receiving a well-deserved recognition for their outstanding work in combating heart failure,” said Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. I have visited Elmhurst’s facilities many times, and have seen firsthand the great work their medical and support staff has been doing. My office is proud to have been able to provide funding for the hospital, and I want to personally thank the entire administration and staff for the tireless work they do to help save lives in our community.”

Congestive heart failure, often referred to as heart failure, is a chronic progressive condition that affects the pumping power of your heart muscles. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a common lung disease that takes one of two forms: chronic bronchitis or emphysema. Psychiatry is a medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders.
