WATCHDOG GROUPS BELIEVE AUTHORS OF DISCREDITED FIRST-DRAFT ETHNIC STUDIES CURRICULUM USING UNIVERSITY NAME AND TAXPAYER-FUNDED RESOURCES TO RUN FOR-PROFIT BUSINESS

0

Three organizations that have for several months been raising concerns about the corrupt development of California’s Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum, today called on state officials to investigate further unethical and potentially illegal activities by the curriculum drafters.

“We are writing to express our concern that the founders of what appears to be a for-profit educational consulting firm, Liberated Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Institute (LESMC), are using the name of California State University Northridge (CSUN), and may be using legislatively-mandated instructional materials developed for the State Board of Education, for personal gain and to promote a highly politicized and divisive curriculum in K-12 classrooms throughout the state,” wrote AMCHA Initiative, California Association of Scholars, and Californians for Equal Rights to CSUN President Erika D. Beck and California School Board of Education President Linda Darling-Hammond.

The letter provided evidence that LESMC is using the CSUN name and state-developed instructional materials while advertising “packages and experts” at a cost. The groups noted that such behavior likely violates California Code, Education Code – EDC § 89005.5 and California Code, Government Code – GOV § 19990.

All three of LESMC’s founders are state employees. Two are faculty in the Chicano/a Studies Department at CSUN — Theresa Montano and Stevie Ruiz — and the third, Guadalupe Carrasco Cardona, has taught in public high schools in California and is an adjunct lecturer at CSU Long Beach. In 2019, Montano and Cardona were members of the SBE-appointed Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Advisory Committee and responsible for helping to develop the highly controversial and highly politicized first draft of the ESMC, which was met with enormous criticism from the public, state legislators and Governor Newsom, and was ultimately rejected by the SBE.

“We believe the LESMC founders must not be permitted to use the name of a state supported university and other taxpayer-funded resources for advancing their own personal and political interests, and we hope your respective offices will promptly investigate this matter,” concluded the organizations.

Last year, AMCHA exposed that after the original curriculum was rejected by the state and was already undergoing a complete overhaul, these same curriculum drafters were sidestepping the state process and directly lobbying individual California school districts to support their widely criticized curriculum. When approaching school districts, they did so without revealing the curriculum had already been rejected. At least 20 districts have fallen for this charade and adopted it. These same individuals then went on to form LESMC to further promote the rejected first draft as well as to offer school districts their professional assistance with implementing the controversial curriculum in district schools.

AMCHA has also been leading an effort to expose the dangers that a curriculum based in Critical Ethnic Studies poses to all California students, and particularly Jewish students. Last year, AMCHA organized a letter from 80 organizations that urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to veto a bill, AB 331, that would have mandated high school students take a course based on the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum, and he did. However, a new bill has recently been introduced in the state legislature to replace AB 331. And last month, 35 scholars and academics, including AMCHA co-founder Dr. Leila Beckwith, found serious methodological flaws and a significant lack of evidence in the research hailed as the rationale for developing California’s Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum. The scholarly review found a misrepresentation of social science research and insufficient evidence to support the bold claims made about the curriculum’s educational benefits.

In 2016, California state legislators passed a bill, AB 2016, mandating that the state’s Department of Education (CDE) develop a model ethnic studies curriculum for use in high school ethnic studies courses. Although the bill stated that the goal of such courses was “preparing pupils to be global citizens with an appreciation for the contributions of multiple cultures,” the politically motivated educators appointed by the CDE to help draft the model curriculum developed a curriculum firmly rooted in Critical Ethnic Studies. Unlike the broad field of ethnic studies, with its goal of understanding and celebrating the contributions of California’s and our nation’s diversity, Critical Ethnic Studies is a narrow, highly politicized conceptualization of the field that limits its focus to specific identity groups, is firmly rooted in ideologies that divide society into oppressed and oppressor groups based primarily on race and class, and, as part of its disciplinary mission, uses the classroom to indoctrinate students into narrow political beliefs and activism. A lesson included on Jewish Americans portrays them as racially privileged and clearly on the oppressor side of the race-class divide. And the discipline as a whole is historically anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic.

AMCHA monitors 450 college campuses across the U.S. for anti-Semitic activity. The organization has recorded more than 3,500 anti-Semitic incidents since 2015. Its daily Anti-Semitism Tracker, organized by state and university, can be viewed here.

AMCHA Initiative is a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to combating anti-Semitism at colleges and universities in the United States.

MASK TO THE MAX – NY HEALTH DEPARTMENT UPDATES MASK GUIDANCE

0

The Health Department today issued updated guidance on face coverings (PDF), one of the most critical tools to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The guidance recommends people over the age of two-years-old wear snug fitting masks with two or three layers of material to better prevent unfiltered air from passing through. Alternatively, New Yorkers may wear two masks (PDF), with a cloth face covering over a disposable mask. The guidance also suggests higher grade masks, like KN95s, for people at greater risk – including those 65 or older; those with an underlying medical condition; those who care for someone who is sick and people who are in prolonged close contact with non-household members while indoors.

“Masks help us face the world and each other but it’s important that we cover up correctly,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Dave A. Chokshi. “The strategies we’re sharing today will help shield all of us from COVID-19. The most important thing remains wearing face coverings consistently and properly, covering both your nose and mouth, indoors and outdoors.”

Because not all face coverings provide the same amount of protection, New Yorkers are urged to consider the following when selecting a face covering:

  • Use a face covering with two or three layers of material to better prevent unfiltered air from passing through. A cloth face covering over a disposable mask, is also recommended. However, people should not use two disposable masks. Wearing two of these masks does not help improve fit.
  • Use face coverings made of tightly-woven fabric (fabrics that do not let light pass through when held up to a light source). Face coverings should be made of breathable fabric (like cotton), and not of leather, plastic, or other materials that make it hard to breathe.
  • Do not use a face-covering with an exhalation valve as it allows unfiltered exhaled air to escape.
  • Make sure the face-covering fits snugly against the sides of the face and fully cover both the nose and mouth, without slipping. Face coverings that fit loosely allow respiratory droplets to enter and leak out. Here are some tips to help ensure a snug fit:
    • Wear a cloth face covering over a disposable mask.
    • Wear a face covering with a nose wire.
    • Wear a face mask fitter or brace.
    • Knot the ear loops and fold or tuck extra material.

For New Yorkers at greater risk, the guidance recommends two masks or even considering higher-grade masks, such as a KN95 mask, which is similar in design and function to N95 masks used by healthcare workers. This includes those who are:

  • 65 or older,
  • have an underlying medical condition that increases the risk of severe COVID-19,
  • people who care for someone who is sick,
  • people who are in prolonged close contact with non-household members while indoors (such as people who regularly work in-person with the members of the public).

N95 respirators should be used in health care settings.

More information is available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.

People should also wear face coverings at home if:

  • They live with others who are sick, recently tested positive for COVID-19, or were recently exposed to someone with COVID-19 (unless alone in a separate room). In these instances, face coverings should also be worn around pets.
  • If someone who does not live in the household is in the home, face coverings should be worn.

DOJ Changes Legal Position in Arizona Voting Case

BY MATTHEW VADUM(EPOCH TIMES)

The Biden administration changed its position on an upcoming Supreme Court appeal dealing with Arizona’s electoral integrity laws, disavowing the previous administration’s interpretation of anti-discrimination provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Although the Biden administration won’t present oral arguments in the case or update a friend-of-the-court brief filed by the Trump administration, it signaled to the justices and the public that it’s leaving the door open to adopting a more aggressive interpretation of the statute in the future.

Section 2 of the law forbids voting practices that result “in a denial or abridgment of the right … to vote on account of race or color [or language-minority status],” and provides that such a result “is established” if a jurisdiction’s “political processes … are not equally open” to members of such a group “in that [they] have less opportunity … to participate in the political process and to elect representatives of their choice.”

“That text must be construed in light of Section 2’s constitutional context, as an exercise of Congress’s authority to enforce the Fifteenth Amendment’s ban on intentional discrimination,” the Trump administration’s brief filed last year stated.

The filing comes as the litigants prepare to present oral arguments to the Supreme Court in the case on March 2.

The case is two cases that the court consolidated. The first is Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee (DNC). The second is Arizona Republican Party v. DNC. The reach of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is at issue.

As The Epoch Times previously reported, the Supreme Court agreed on Oct. 2, 2020, to hear the challenge by the state of Arizona and Arizona Republicans to Democratic Party efforts to relax electoral integrity measures and throw open the state to ballot harvesting and out-of-precinct voting. This meant Arizona’s current ban on both practices remained in place for the Nov. 3, 2020, election.

A U.S. district court upheld Arizona’s provisions, which were challenged under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. A panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court but then at the en banc stage reversed, going against the recommendations of the federal government.

The provisions regarding ballot harvesting and out-of-precinct voting were ruled racially discriminatory and therefore unconstitutional by the appeals court.

The DNC strategically filed a flurry of lawsuits in battleground states in the 2020 election cycle in hopes of changing state voting rules in time for the recent elections. Many of the lawsuits were successful.

Arizona, like other states, has adopted rules to promote the order and integrity of its elections.

One provision is an “out-of-precinct policy,” which doesn’t count provisional ballots cast in person on Election Day outside of the voter’s designated precinct.

Another provision is a “ballot-collection law,” known as H.B. 2023, that permits only specific persons such as family and household members, caregivers, mail carriers, and election officials to handle another person’s completed early ballot. Most states require voters to vote in their own precincts, and about 20 states limit ballot collection, according to court documents.

Arizona’s law, enacted in 2016, made it a felony, punishable by a $150,000 fine and up to two years in prison, to collect and deliver another person’s completed ballot, with the noted exceptions.

In a letter to the justices, Deputy Solicitor General Edwin Kneedler acknowledged that the previous administration filed a friend-of-the-court brief supporting Arizona and Republicans in the cases, “taking the position that neither Arizona measure violates the results test under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and that the court of appeals erred in overturning the district court’s finding of no intentional discrimination.”

But following the change in administration, “the Department of Justice has undertaken a reexamination of the issues in these cases and a reconsideration of the framework for reviewing vote-denial claims under the results test of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act as articulated” by the government in the brief.

The Biden administration now believes that “although it does not disagree with the conclusion in that brief that neither Arizona measure violates Section 2’s results test, the Department doesn’t adhere to the framework for the application of Section 2 in vote-denial cases set forth in the brief.”

NYC Mayoral Candidate Andrew Yang Gives Thumbs Up To Casino Gambling Ventures

Seems like New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang is ready to roll the dice; quite literally.

Having switched his position on the gaming industry as of late, Yang is of the belief that building more casinos in the city would represent an economic windfall of sorts. According to a New York Post report, as the mayoralty race began to gain momentum Yang changed gears on the issue of establishing gambling venues in the city. The Post reported that last month he proposed building a casino on Governors Island.

What makes Yang’s proclamations about the economic benefits of gambling so revealing is that he had previously held an opposing view on the issue. During Yang’s presidential bid in 2019-2020, he penned a book entitled, “The War on Normal People” in which he launched scathing tirades against gambling meccas and their deleterious effects on society.

Elaborating on his proposal to build a casino on Governors Island, Yang told the audience listening to a recent broadcast of the Breakfast Club syndicated radio program that “that casino would generate so much money it would be bananas. If the city could get that in place and harness some of that — that would be one of the engines of recovery.”

The Post reported that Yang also tweeted, “We need big ideas. There are many downsides of casinos but the upside is $700m+ recurring annually largely from tourists now going to CT and NJ. That’s money for teachers, hospitals and other services. We should be trying to grow revenue where possible.”

In his book, Yang also writes:  “One thing that has surprised me is that many of these places — Baltimore, St. Louis, New Orleans, Detroit, Cleveland — have a casino smack dab in the middle of their downtown. I’ve visited some of them on a weeknight and they are not encouraging places. Most of the people there do not seem like they should be gambling.”

Those strongly opposed to gambling have promulgated the notion that casinos attract low income citizens who think they can parley their relatively small “chunk of change” into some “big bucks” by playing the various tables in the casino. As a result, these players very often end up squandering their entire paychecks at the casinos. And that, of course, leads to a bevy of economic and emotional hardships as well as potential addiction.

The Post reported that a Yang campaign spokesman defended his support of a new casino in the Big Apple. “No one policy is going to save us, which is why we need an all-of-the-above strategy to bring New York City back. That is why bidding on a New York City-based casino should happen before 2023,” said Yang spokesman Edwin Molina.

“Doing so would accelerate the return of jobs and tourism to our city, immediately injecting an estimated $1.5 billion in licensing fees and $900 million in new, annual tax revenue. Our City is unlike any other in the world, comparing New York to anywhere else is apples to oranges.”

Currently, full fledged casinos that are familiar sites in Las Vegas or Atlantic City will not be given permission to open in New York State until 2023.

The Post reported that electronic table games are currently available at Resorts World New York which is located next to Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens.

Wuhan Lab Eligible to Receive US Taxpayer Funding Through 2024, NIH Confirms

AP

The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) is authorized to receive taxpayer funding for animal research until January 2024, the National Institute of Health told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The WIV is at the center of widespread speculation that COVID-19 could have entered the human population in China due to an accidental lab leak. Researchers at the lab were studying bat-based coronaviruses prior to the outbreak, a project partially backed by $600,000 in U.S. taxpayer funds routed to the lab through the nonprofit group EcoHealth Alliance.

The president of EcoHealth Alliance, Peter Daszak, was the sole U.S. member of the World Health Organization (WHO) delegation that investigated the origins of the pandemic on the ground in China in January and February. While the WHO delegation has yet to release a report on their findings, Daszak said the White House should blindly accept their conclusion that it’s highly unlikely the virus could have leaked from the WIV.

Daszak also said American intelligence, which indicates researchers at the WIV became infected with COVID-like symptoms before the first known cases in December 2019, shouldn’t be trusted.

EcoHealth Alliance’s work researching bat-based coronaviruses in China was funded by a $3.7 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 2014, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The grant was terminated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in April amid criticism over EcoHealth Alliance’s relationship with the WIV. The NIH said in a letter the nonprofit’s work in China did not align with “program goals and agency priorities.”

The NIH told EcoHealth Alliance in July it would restore the grant if it met certain conditions, one of which was to arrange for an independent team to investigate the WIV to determine if it had possession of the SARS-COV-2 virus prior to the first known cases in December 2019.

Daszak told NPR that the NIH’s conditions were “preposterous.”

“I’m not trained as a private detective,” Daszak said. “It’s not really my job to do that.”

However, the WIV still has an active Foreign Assurance on file with the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, which enables it to continue receiving taxpayer funds to engage in animal research, according to the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare.

A NIH spokeswoman told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the WIV’s Foreign Assurance was approved on Jan. 9, 2019, and is currently set to expire on Jan. 31, 2024.

The spokeswoman did not confirm whether the WIV is currently receiving direct or indirect taxpayer funding for research activities involving animals. EcoHealth Alliance’s last known subgrant to the WIV was in May 2019, according to USASpending.Gov.

EcoHealth Alliance received a new $7.5 million grant from the NIH to help establish a Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases. Daszak told NPR that the funds his organization received from the new grant will not be used for any research in China.

The president of the nonpartisan watchdog group White Coat Waste Project, Anthony Bellotti, told the DCNF that EcoHealth Alliance should be defunded entirely for funding “reckless gain-of-function animal experiments that may have led to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“We’re urging Congress and the White House to defund EcoHealth now and secure independent investigations into whether their treacherous gain-of-function animal experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology led to the COVID outbreak.”

Trump Lawyer Schoen: Impeachment Trial Boosted Ex-President, Got Me ‘Canceled’

0
AP

(NEWSMAX) Far from hurting former President Donald Trump, the Democrats’ attempt to bring him down with a second impeachment trial actually has been a benefit to the former president, though it has gotten one of his attorneys “canceled,” Trump lawyer David Schoen tells Newsmax TV.

“This political weaponization of impeachment struck at the heart of the institution of the presidency, put it at risk and may have put it at risk in the future,” David Schoen said Thursday on “Greg Kelly Reports.” “But I think you’re going to see now is a backlash,” adding that Trump has gained momentum from the win.

“Let’s face it. Let’s look at who he is. They knew who he was when they elected him and he wasn’t one of them,” Schoen told host Greg Kelly. “But look at what he did in office. He’s the first so-called politician who kept his word,” said Schoen, pointing to Trump making other members of NATO pay their share and moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

“They’re going to empower him because everyone saw that the attack was unfair in this impeachment process,” he said.

On the other side, Schoen has seen himself a victim of the “cancel culture,” having an offer to teach a civil rights law class revoked after he accepted the job of defending Trump.

“I thought it was a sad commentary, quite frankly,” he said, but I also wouldn’t want students to be uncomfortable. What’s changed is the concept of liberalism. You know, liberalism used to favor the marketplace of ideas. They would want to hear all sides of the story. Everyone has something to bring to the table. Not anymore.”

(TJVNEWS.COM)Left-wing Hollywood celebrities wasted little time in popping the champagne following news of Rush Limbaugh’s death. As Breitbart News reported, the 70-year-old conservative radio legend died Wednesday morning following a battle with advanced lung cancer, his wife, Kathryn Limbaugh, announced at the beginning of Wednesday’s radio program.

Here’s a rundown of the ghoulish Twitter celebrity celebration of death.

Christopher Mathias of the Huffington Post: “Rush Limbaugh was a bigot and a misogynist who saturated America’s airwaves with cruel lies and conspiracy theories for decades, transforming the GOP in the process.”

Steve Hofstetter: “‘Rest in Piss’ is trending because Rush Limbaugh died. I don’t know who the first person to write this was, but how dare you. How dare you come up with the perfect joke before the rest of us could.”

David Cross: “Cancer killed the cancer”

George Takei: “I guess I’m grateful that he lived long enough to see Trump defeated by Biden.”

Nathan Bernard: “goodbye Rush Limbaugh, may you rot in hell with your ******* ugly ties”

New York Times podcast host Jane Coaston: “Rush Limbaugh was the first person I ever recognized existed largely as a Rorschach test.”

Palmer Report: “Rush Limbaugh spent decades advancing his career by opportunistically spreading vicious lies that got a lot of bad people elected, whose corrupt policies in turn got a lot of Americans killed.”

Cameron Kasky: “Rush Limbaugh has passed on, but worry not- his memory lives on through bigots everywhere”

Bishop Talbert Swan: “Bidding him good riddance or wishing him to rot in hell is being kind.”

Chris Cillizza of CNN: “Trump was Limbaugh’s Frankenstein monster. And he proudly stood by him until the very end.”

Anthony Rapp: “A person who consistently and continually did a tremendous amount of damage to the world, #RushLimbaugh, lived twice as long as my friend Jonathan Larson, whose work and legacy have only changed the world for the better. It’s difficult to reconcile the unfairness of that fact.”

Charlotte Clymer: “Rush Limbaugh was a coward and white supremacist. He aggressively and cynically exploited divisions in our country by weaponizing hatred and bigotry for his own personal gain. He was in service to his own greed, prejudice, and hypocrisy, and that is how history will remember him.”

Danielle Campoamor: “Because the only way to truly pay our respects to the radio host, who reached more than 15 million listeners during his 30-year talk radio career, is to remember exactly who he was and the legacy he left behind— one of divisiveness, cruelty, racism, homophobia, bigotry, and sexism.”

Kirk Acevedo: “One bigot dead. Waiting for the rest to join him.”

David Klion: “Today is a sad day, as the excruciating physical and spiritual agony Rush Limbaugh experienced at all times has finally ended.”

Bette Midler: “#RushLimbaugh has gone to his reward. Bet it’s hot.”

Billy Baldwin: “Enjoy hell.”

Luke Null: “Rush Limbaugh already started a radio show in Hell and is ranting about how the devil should shut the fiery gates because all these OUTSIDERS are ruining everything!”

Finneas: “Feeling very sorry for the people of Hell who now have to deal with Rush Limbaugh for the rest of eternity”

Ron Perlman: “I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the poor devil who will no doubt have to spend the rest of eternity with Rush Limbaugh.”

NASA’s Perseverance Rover lands on Mars to Collect Rock Samples

0

(Arutz Sheva Staff) A NASA rover landed on Mars on Thursday in a quest to bring back rocks that could answer whether life ever existed on the red planet, The Associated Press reports.

The space agency said the six-wheeled Perseverance hurtled through the thin, orange atmosphere and settled onto the surface in the mission’s riskiest maneuver yet, as Mars has long been a deathtrap for incoming spacecraft.

Perseverance will collect geological samples that will be brought back to Earth in about a decade to be analyzed for signs of ancient microscopic life.

NASA’s coverage begins a minute into this video

The landing of the six-wheeled vehicle would mark the third visit to Mars in just over a week. Two spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates and China swung into orbit around the planet on successive days last week.

Perseverance, the biggest, most advanced rover ever sent by NASA, stands to become the ninth spacecraft to successfully land on Mars, every one of them from the US, beginning in the 1970s.

The rover is designed to drill down with its 7-foot (2-meter) arm and collect rock samples that might hold signs of bygone microscopic life. The plan called for three to four dozen chalk-size samples to be sealed in tubes and set aside on Mars to be retrieved by a fetch rover and brought homeward by another rocket ship, with the goal of getting them back to Earth as early as 2031.

Texas Power Grid Was ‘Seconds or Minutes’ from Catastrophic Failure, Say Officials

BOB PRICE

NBC News reports that Texas officials said the state’s primary power grid was “seconds or minutes” from catastrophic failure on Sunday night. The agency imposed rolling outages to prevent the collapse of the entire grid.

NBC News’ Gabe Gutierrez tweeted that officials with the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) just stated the Texas power grid was “seconds or minutes — not hours — away from catastrophic failure. The tweet states rolling blackouts were implement to stop the situation from becoming far worse that it would have otherwise been.

On Thursday, ERCOT officials said they made “significant progress” in restoring power throughout the state.

“We’re to the point in the load restoration where we are allowing transmission owners to bring back any load they can related to this load shed event,” said ERCOT Senior Director of System Operations Dan Woodfin in a written statement. “We will keep working around the clock until every single customer has their power back on.”

PowerOutage.us reports that just under 500,000 Texas customers remain without electricity. This is down from more than four million customers who were in the dark earlier this week.

ERCOT officials previously stated that had the power grid collapsed, it would take weeks or months to restore power statewide.

“At approximately 1:25 a.m. this morning [Feb 15] , ERCOT entered its third and highest level of emergency operations because electric demand is exceeding the available supply,” officials said at the time. “Controlled outages are occurring to protect the electric grid from uncontrolled, cascading outages.”

Brooklyn Waitress Fired After Wanting to Research COVID Vaccine’s Effects on Fertility Before Taking Jab

0

(TJVNEWS.COM) Bonnie Jacobson, of Brooklyn, said she was unexpectedly terminated from Red Hook Tavern on Monday, days after she expressed concern about how the vaccine affects fertility, NBC reported.

This signals what could become an enormous ethical and business issue in the very near future: mandatory vaccines for continued employment.

Daily Mail reported:

Jacobson says at the time vaccines had not been mandated and she’d expressed to a manager at a follow-up meeting a desire to research the vaccine, as she and her husband had been trying to conceive a child.

While a manager at the time reportedly sympathized with her, another email on Feb. 12 ordered employees to receive the jabs.

“Please be advised that we will require that all employees receive the vaccination,” the email stated, according to the Daily Mail.

“This will be mandatory for all existing employees and any new hires. The exception to this policy will be if your own personal health or disability prohibits you from obtaining this vaccination. We encourage you to consult your healthcare professional to determine if getting a vaccine is right for you.”

NBC reported, that Jacobson does not want her job back, but wishes the issue of mandatory vaccines and employment would be handled better in the future.

New York City’s NBC outlet reported:

Red Hook Tavern’s owner Billy Durney acknowledged that the situation could have been handled differently.

“Once New York state allowed restaurant workers to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, we thought this was the perfect opportunity to put a plan in place to keep our team and guests safe. No one has faced these challenges before and we made a decision that we thought would best protect everyone,” he said in an emailed statement.

“And, we now realize that we need to update our policy so it’s clear to our team how the process works and what we can do to support them. We’re making these changes immediately.”

As more citizens get the COVID vaccine, and more of life returns to normalcy, this hot-button issue on mandatory vaccinations is bound to wind up in courtrooms across the world

Texas Hospitals and Homes Lose Water Due to Winter Storm

0
AP

BOB PRICE

Utility shortages in Texas spread to the state’s water supply as the winter storms continue. Hospitals and millions of homes do not have reliable water service.

A dependable water supply is now on the list of Texan’s concerns after enduring days of power outages and freezing weather conditions. Hospitals in multiple cities are reporting disruption of water supplies and nearly 12 million Texas residents are without dependable, clean water.

Nearly 600 public water systems in 141 of Texas 254 counties reported disruptions in water service. Boil water notices and outright failures of systems impacted nearly 12 million people, a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality spokesperson told the Texas Tribune.

In Austin, multiple hospitals reported losing water pressure on Wednesday.

“Water feeds the facility’s boiler, so as a result, it is also losing heat,” David Huffstutler, CEO of St. David’s HealthCare, said in a statement published by the Tribune.

Some patients are being relocated to hospitals that currently have water and heat.

Ascension Seton Hospital reported intermittent water issues at several of their facilities in the Austin area as well.

In Houston, Texas’ largest city, hospitals are also reporting water issues.

“Quite honestly, I think we probably could have handled everything up until the water,” Roberta Schwartz, executive vice president at Houston Methodist Hospital, told the Houston Business Journal. “The water has thrown a completely new loop onto everything.”

In Houston’s Texas Medical Center, workers report they cannot even flush toilets, KHOU CBS 11 reported.

“Due to a loss of water pressure, a lot of folks are out of water, including our hospitals,” Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo told reporters on Wednesday.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) announced Wednesday morning that residents using City of Houston water should boil before drinking, Breitbart Texas reported.

The water issues impacted many of Houston’s largest hospitals including Houston Methodist, Memorial Hermann, St. Luke’s, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).

“You’ve got to flush commodes, you’ve got to wash your hands, you’ve got to sterilize instruments and equipment,” UTMB Health CEO Dr. Tim Harlin told the local CBS affiliate.

Many hospitals are curtailing elective medical procedures and patient appoints due to the lingering winter storms, Beckers Hospital Review reported. Power and water issues are impacting dialysis patients also.

Texas hospitals are also facing a shortage of oxygen tanks as delivery systems are less than optimal during the storms, the outlet reported.

Electrical power distribution is looking more favorable as less than 500,000 ERCOT customers are reported to be without power — down from more than 4 million two days ago, PowerOutage.us reports.

After Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro addresses the UN Human Rights Council next week, a high-level panel at the United Nations will examine whether the Maduro regime should be removed from the world’s top rights body on account of its gross and systematic violations of human rights.

Top Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado will join former UN Security Council president Diego Arria, Organization of American States secretary-general Luis Almagro and international human rights lawyer Irwin Cotler on a high-level panel co-sponsored by the UN missions of Honduras, Estonia and Ukraine, together with the independent non-governmental human rights group UN Watch.

The official UN side-event (see details below) will be broadcast globally on UN Web TV on Wednesday, February 24 at 12:00 pm EST.

The event will take place just before the UNHRC’s main annual session begins an unprecedented series of three debates on the human rights record of Venezuela, which stirred controversy when it joined as a council member one year ago.

In a landmark September 2020 report, the UNHRC’s Fact-Finding Mission to Venezuela found the Maduro regime guilty of “crimes against humanity.”

As a result of conflicting resolutions by Venezuela’s allies and critics, debates on the country will be held at the UNHRC session on February 25, March 10, and 11, with briefings from UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet and the Fact-Finding Mission, as well as interventions from state delegations.

“It is morally unconscionable and logically absurd for the Maduro regime to remain a member of the UN’s highest human rights body after that body’s own investigators have presented detailed and horrifying evidence of systematic killing, torture, and sexual violence,” said UN Watch director Hillel Neuer, who will be moderating next week’s high-level panel.

The mandate of the Venezuela inquiry has been extended for an additional two years, until September 2022, pursuant to Resolution 45/20.

“Faced now with clear evidence that the orders to commit atrocities came from the very top — from Nicolás Maduro and his senior political and security officials — the United Nations must act by invoking the provision for removing council members that commit gross and systematic human rights abuses,” said Neuer.

Removing a member is contemplated in the council’s founding charter, Resolution 60/251, and has historical precedent with the General Assembly’s unanimous vote to expel Muammar Qaddafi’s Libya regime from the council in 2011.

Led by former UN Security Council President Diego Arria, and endorsed by leading Venezuela opposition figures Juan Guaido and Antonio Ledezma, UN Watch’s global campaign to expel Maduro from the council has already gathered more than 180,000 signatures.

“Regular citizens in Venezuela and around the globe are sending a message to the United Nations that it can no longer allow the Maduro regime to cast a shadow on the reputation of the world’s highest human rights body,” said Neuer.

Democrats Furious Over Ted Cruz Flying to Cancun- Feigned Outrage to Get Cuomo Out of Headlines?

The Twitter universe exploded this afternoon with feigned outrage from the progressive personalities who dominate the social media outlet, when Ted Cruz went to Cancun during the middle of an emergency in Texas.

Indeed, Cruz failed to take into account the “optics” of leaving Texas during the power outages, water service outages, dozens of deaths, and a situation which some are considering a humanitarian crisis.  However in reality as a Senator there is very little Cruz can do about the situation.

Blatantly biased Associated Press pushed the story initially, and within a few hours Cuomo’s name vanished from the headlines and the nursing home scandal took a backseat.

“The left – and some grifters on the right – are consumed by partisan anger and rage,” his office said in a written statement. “Sen. Cruz will continue to work for 29 million Texans in the Senate.”

Cruz, released a press statement, explaining that he was accompanying his daughters to Mexico, and was heading back.  Still, the false outrage coming from Twitter progressives, who just spent the last day celebrating the death of Rush Limbaugh is disingenuine nonsense.

The rank and file social media Democrats, progressives, and SJW brigade seemed far less concerned with the Cuomo nursing home scandal. On  Twitter, Cruz has been the top trending topic, while Cuomo has vanished.

Popular, YouTube political analyst and journalist Tim Pool, expertly broke down the false outrage, and it’s worth a listen.  Pool, who used to work for Vice, is one of the most popular independent journalists online. His politics are hard to classify, in 2017 Pool supported Bernie Sanders, while in 2020 he was firmly behind Trump. Pool’s kind of analysis, goes beyond cheerleading for the Democrat or Republican party and this is exactly the kind of person tech giants are coming after. One must wonder how long before Tim Pool is also canceled from social media?

Here is the analysis of the Ted Cruz  outrage

I’ve Been Banned By Twitter….. You’re next.

0

I was banned by Twitter this week. Trust me, if you’re a conservative or a patriot, read this story carefully. Because you’re next.

I’ve argued for quite some time that this was coming. I warned that if Joe Biden were elected, Democrats would overplay their hand. They would open the borders and let the whole world in. They’d legalize millions of people who are in this country illegally. They’d confiscate guns. They’d try to destroy the energy industry in the name of climate change. They’d tax and regulate small businesses to death. They’d make election fraud easy, legal and permanent. They’d pass a slew of executive orders that benefit China. And worst of all, they’d intimidate, censor and ban.

It was easy to predict. This is what socialists and communists always do. Free speech and socialism cannot coexist.

I learned all this at Columbia University. My classmates (class of ’83) were almost all from the richest and most powerful families in America. Yet they proudly called themselves communists. They boasted of their hatred of wealth, wealthy people, business owners and a “racist country” called America. They vowed to overwhelm the U.S. economic system, bankrupt business owners, kill capitalism and turn America into a socialist nation. They’re now putting that plan into place.

The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns by Democratic governors accomplished the first job. Capitalism, small business and the middle class are all crippled and hanging by a thread.

Biden’s election is taking care of the rest, with open borders, the most executive orders in history, massive new taxes and regulations on the way.

And then there are the bans and instances of censorship. A quote by Andrei Vyshinsky, the Soviet foreign minister under Josef Stalin, sums up what’s happening and why: “In our state, naturally, there is and can be no place for freedom of speech, press, and so on for the foes of socialism. … (T)hese freedoms … must be classified as a counter-revolutionary crime.”

Do you recognize the thinking? This is a socialist takeover of America.

All the other Silicon Valley “masters of the universe” are purging dissent — just like the communist tyrants of Stalin’s day. They’ve decided free speech is dangerous for their socialist plan.

I’m banned from Twitter. But understand who is still free to tweet …

Iranian mullahs remain on Twitter.

Communist Chinese leaders remain on Twitter — while they’re probably abusing human rights and sending critics to prison camps.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro remains on Twitter, even though the dictator has led his citizens to mass poverty, misery and starvation, and is accused of arresting, torturing and murdering his political opposition.

No doubt pedophiles and perverts remain on Twitter — actually, the Supreme Court ruled 8-0 that convicted sex offenders have the right to use social media.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi just demanded that Twitter ban over 1,000 accounts and posts that were critical of his government and said they are spreading misinformation. Twitter’s response? It will not ban these accounts because it advocates for “the right of free expression.”

But not in America, clearly not when it involves conservatives. The prime minister made a big mistake. He should have simply accused his opposition of being pro-Trump conservatives. That would have been the end of that.

A decade ago, I gave a speech to 1,000 conservatives in San Francisco. I opened with a joke, saying, “It’s a little confusing to be in a city where you can be openly gay, openly transsexual, but you have to be a closet conservative.” The crowd roared. Now look how far we’ve come. In America, being a conservative is now a crime worthy of being banned.

Conservatives are clearly the last remaining group that can be openly discriminated against. It’s legal to make me and my opinions “disappear” — even though my opinions represent those of 74 million voters in this past election, even though I was clearly popular on Twitter. I gained over 70,000 new fans on Twitter in just the few weeks around the election.

But see, there’s the real problem: I was popular. And I speak raw truth. My opinions were attracting quite a following. Twitter and liberals couldn’t allow that. The truth might catch on. Truth might spread. Americans might start to ask questions.

That would be bad for business.

So now I’m a political prisoner … in America. My opinions are banned. What’s next? Black armbands for conservatives? Gun confiscation? Reeducation camps?

Take this seriously. Because you’re next.

China Most Active in Spreading Disinformation on COVID-19 Origin: Report

China was the most active country in propagating disinformation on the origin of the COVID-19, according to a newly-released report by the Associated Press (AP) and the Digital Forensic Research Lab of Washington-based think tank Atlantic Council.

The report was the results of a nine-month joint research project, after analyzing millions of social media posts and articles that were published in the first six months of the COVID-19 outbreak. It examined the false narratives that took hold in four countries: China, Iran, Russia, and the United States.

China was much to blame for the disinformation on COVID-19 origin, which is caused by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, commonly known as the novel coronavirus.

“Particularly in the period immediately following COVID-19’s initial spread, factual information about the disease, its origin, and its symptoms was lacking or withheld–most notably by China–providing the ample space for misleading and malicious information to take root,” according to the report.

The Chinese regime concealed from the public information about the disease and also silenced eight whistleblower doctors, including ophthalmologist Li Wenliang, who were the first to warn about an “unknown pneumonia” outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan on Chinese social media.

The report pointed out that users on Chinese social media Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, began writing about an unproven conspiracy theory connecting the United States with the outbreak on Dec. 31, 2019. For example, one Weibo user wrote, “Watch out for Americans,” while another wrote about the United States being one of several countries in the world that houses a P4 bio-safety laboratory.

But none of these early speculations on Weibo was “coordinated or particularly far-reaching.”

Meanwhile, the P4 lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology has long been speculated as the source of the virus in a potential lab leak. A fact sheet released by the U.S. State Department last month stated that it “had reason to believe” several researchers at the institute fell ill with COVID-19-like symptoms in the autumn of 2019, contradicting a claim by a researcher at the institute who said there was “zero infection” among lab staff and students.

A recent investigation by a team of World Health Organization (WHO) experts in Wuhan did not rule out the possibility that the virus was leaked from the P4 lab, but concluded that the theory was “extremely unlikely.” Last week, WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus suggested more research was needed to study the different origin theories of the virus.

China’s state-run media soon began driving China’s narrative of the pandemic after the sporadic chatters on Weibo.

“China initially preferred to boost international perception in its favor by amplifying stories

about its benevolence in assisting other countries to combat the virus,” according to the report.

In late February last year, China’s state-run media began to publish articles suggesting that the virus may have originated outside of China, according to the report. Some outlets also provided negative coverage of the U.S. response to the outbreak.

“As the disease persisted, however, China began to push narratives that painted its geopolitical competitors in a negative light, including pushing conspiracies such as the idea that COVID-19 was a U.S. biological weapon,” the report added.

Twitter

The report analyzed a series of Twitter posts made by China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian in March 2020. In a tweet on March 12, Zhao accused the United States army of bringing the virus to Wuhan.

The report found that Zhao’s tweets targeting the United States on March 12 and 13 last year had “accumulated nearly 47,000 retweets and quote tweets, [was] referenced in at least 54 languages, and favorited more than 82,000 times” as of Feb. 13. These tweets were also “amplified by at least 30 different Chinese diplomats and state-run accounts.”

Zhao’s tweets also had an enormous impact on China’s domestic audience. According to the report, popular hashtags referencing his tweets were viewed by Weibo users more than 300 million times as of Feb. 13.

The report also analyzed online activities following Zhao’s other tweets in March, which reposted a link to an article by Larry Romanoff published on Global Research Canada, a site known for advancing conspiracy theories on topics such as global warming. The article suggested that the virus might have leaked from Fort Detrick, a prominent military biomedical research lab in Maryland.

There was a spike in Google searches for “Larry Romanoff” around mid-March, following Zhao’s tweets, according to the report.

Recently, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying revisited the conspiracy theory by citing Fort Detrick. She said during a Jan. 18 press briefing that the United States should invite WHO experts to “conduct origin tracing” in the country.

“If the United States truly respects facts, it should open the biological lab at Fort Detrick, give more transparency to issues like its 200-plus overseas bio-labs,” she said.

Moreover, on Twitter, “the number of Chinese diplomatic accounts more than tripled on the platform between May 2019 and May 2020, from 40 to 135, and the output doubled and became more aggressive and conspiratorial,” the report stated. Due to China’s firewall, Twitter is not accessible by ordinary Chinese citizens.
