Israeli-Ethiopians took to the streets in Jerusalem on Monday afternoon after the Magistrate’s Court in Haifa‏‏‏ released the policeman accused of shooting Solomon Tekah.

The police officer was under house arrest and was staying at a hotel since the incident. He was released home after the house arrest warrant ended.

The judge rejected a request presented by the Police’s Investigation Unit for a NIS 50,000 bond and other limitations to be set on the accused officer, saying there was no real concern of obstruction of justice. She did, however, agree to forbid the officer to enter the department he was working in and to use the police computer system.

The shooting, which ignited massive riots by Israelis of Ethiopian origin across the country, is still under investigation.

The rioters protested the death of Solomon Tekah, an 18-year-old Israeli of Ethiopian descent who was shot dead by a police officer during a scuffle earlier this month. The Ethiopian community claims he was wrongfully shot while the officer says he was acting in self-defense.

The riots included the torching of cars, the blocking of major routes, several incidents that almost ended with a lynching and the mass assault of rioters on police stations and police forces in several cities.

It is unclear at this stage what offense the policeman will be charged with.

Tekah’s family has been critical of the treatment the policeman has received so far and joined the demonstration outside the Knesset on Monday. The demonstrators blocked roads near the Knesset and while marching towards the Supreme Court, as police arrested seven protestors and fought back the demonstrators attempted to block roads in the center of the city.

Members of the Israeli-Ethiopian community began rioting on July 2nd, in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Throngs of angry protestors assaulted police forces and blocked major thoroughfares throughout the country.

In Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Ashdod, Haifa, and on major routes throughout Israel, Israelis of Ethiopian descent were joined by others and rioted, threw rocks and firebombs at police, set fire to vehicles and blocked roads for over eight hours, leaving tens of thousands of motorists stranded in their cars.

In several incidents, the rioters launched fireworks at policemen and other police targets. After standing by for several hours, the police intervened and dispersed the riots with crowd-control means.

Some 85 people, including 47 police officers, were injured in the various violent incidents. Five of the injured incurred moderate injuries, while the rest were lightly injured. A total of 19 police vehicles were trashed or burned at the various riot scenes.

Medical teams treating both the police and the rioters were attacked by the protestors, and six ambulances and four emergency motorcycles were damaged by the demonstrators.

Firefighting teams that were called to the scenes of fires set by the rioters were attacked, and a fireman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Israel Launches Mass Operation Against Water Theft by Arabs in Hebron Area

Israeli authorities launched a large operation on Sunday night and Monday against Arab water thieves in the Hebron Hills area.

IDF and Police forces confiscated 18 tankers, drilling equipment and dozens of kilometers of pipeline used to lead the stolen water to the fields, and sealed a number of pirate connections.

The forces also detained a number of individuals suspected of involvement in water theft. The army stated that it hopes that the action will lead to deterrence and reduce the thefts in the summer.

Monday’s operation was that latest in a series of operations carried out by Israeli authorities to locate pirate connections, including the daily patrolling along the water pipeline to locate and cut off thefts.

According to weekly estimates, Arabs steal over 500 cubic meters of water which they use to irrigate their fields, located in many cases in illegal areas.

Israelis in communities in the Hebron area have been contending with reoccurring water cuts, the result of water theft carried out by local Arabs during the summer months, a phenomenon which has increased in recent weeks.

The Arabs connect illegally to the water system and by doing so cause the water pressure to drop and deplete the resources.

As a result of the water cuts, the National Water Authority was forced last summer to send over 10 large water tankers to the Mount Hebron area in order to prevent a severe water crisis that threatened thousands of residents.

In recent weeks, the regional council has repeatedly issued notices asking residents to refrain from using water for laundry, watering of gardens, and filling pools, so that they will have drinking water. This phenomenon is repeated every year during the summer months.

“We wake up every morning to a morning without a drop of water, we barely organize ourselves and send our children to kindergartens where there is no water. Hundreds of residents are forced to live on bottled water,” said Nitzan Zoran, a mother of four girls who live in the community of Avigail. “We don’t talk about laundry and showers, we have given up on those.”

Tzachi, who manages thousands of dunams of orchards in the area, said that “every week we are asked to close the irrigation to the orchards, creating an absurd situation in which agriculture has become the problem instead of the solution.”

“We are not going to be able to continue to work,” he warned.

Yochai Damari, head of the Mount Hebron Regional Council, thanked the authorities for their action and slammed the phenomenon as “real water terrorism.”

“The Arabs do not lack water, they have their own resources, but as part of the takeover of Area C, they need water for agriculture and new and remote housing. It is unacceptable that Israeli citizens, who pay taxes to the state, continue to suffer while the thieves continue to enjoy a supply of water without interruption,” he charged.

He called upon Defense Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “triple enforcement in the field in order to stop the erosion of sovereignty, the harm to the residents, and a great financial loss to the State of Israel.”

On Thursday evening July 11th, Israelis got a treat at the Menorah Mivtahim Arena in Tel Aviv. Legendary singer and songwriter PAUL ANKA, had a lively concert entitled “Anka Sings Sinatra – His Songs, My Songs, My Way”. The 60’s sensation surprised by proving himself as one of the hottest selling concert performers in Israel over the past few years. This was not Anka’s first time in Israel, he had two concerts in 2009 and two more in 2011 at the Nokia Arena, which were all sold out, attesting to Israel’s love for Paul Anka.

As reported by the Jerusalem Post, the crowd enthusiastically received the performer, and in turn Anka showed that he reciprocates warm feelings towards Israel. Now close to 78 years old, Anka seemed to defy time with his energetic performance and enduring zest and motion, coupled with his extraordinary vocal capabilities which seemed to be as strong as when he began his career as a teen sensation in 1955. His performance displayed boundless energy and movement and even on the close up television screen, he looked like a youthful man, nowhere near his age. There was no warm up show needed at the two-hour show. The audience was electrified from the minute the 12-piece orchestra took the stage and the central screen behind them came to life with a video highlighting Anka’s incredible seven-decade career, starting with his earliest performances and throughout the years with a virtual “Who’s Who” of other music celebrities that he collaborated with.

Anka became unforgettably famous singing his hit songs “Diana”, “Lonely Boy”, “Put Your Head on My Shoulder”, and ” Having My Baby”. He is also a renowned song writer, writing the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and one of Tom Jones’s biggest hits, “She’s a Lady”. He also wrote the English lyrics to Frank Sinatra’s classic song, “My Way”. In all he can proudly boast a career with over 600 songs, 126 albums and almost 100 million record sales across the globe. He also led a successful career in acting.

The Menorah Mivtahim arena is owned by the municipality of Tel Aviv, and is home to the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball club. The hall has capacity for 10,383 with permanent seating for tennis matches, 11,060 for basketball games, and 8,000 for concerts. Other international musical performers to grace the stage have been Rod Stewart, Alicia Keys, Charles Aznavour, Westlife, Five, Sean Paul, and Julio and Enrique Iglesias.

President Reuven Rivlin on Monday met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Seoul at the Blue House, the official president’s residence.

Rivlin is in the country for a five-day state visit, the first such visit by an Israeli president since 1992.

The two countries signed Memorandums of Understandings (MOU) in the fields of energy and education.

The two leaders shared lunch and spoke about the growing ties between the countries and where the cooperation can be expanded. Rivlin invited the South Korean president and his wife to visit Israel in the near future.

Rivlin noted that 2018 was a record year for Korean tourism to Israel, with some 45,000 tourists visiting the Holy Land. He also stressed that the full potential is not being realized due to the stringent Korean travel warning about Israel, which he asked to be reexamined, saying that it does not reflect the security situation in Israel.

Touching on the large Christian community in South Korea, Rivlin shared his plan to turn the monasteries in the Jordan Valley into a pilgrimage area which is now accessible due to Israel’s recent clearing of the area from landmines.

Given the similar security challenges facing the two countries, Rivlin noted the potential for strengthening military cooperation. Israel has sold drones to South Korea, and South Korea expressed interest in the Iron Dome defense system.

Rivlin said that Israel would be happy to share insights and knowledge that Israel has developed in facing threats in various fields. He also expressed his appreciation for South Korea’s contribution to the stability of the Middle East and to the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

President Moon said that the State of Israel is an inspiration to him and that he looks with amazement at its achievements over the years. “Your education system and the famous Israeli chutzpah are a model for us,” he said.

He stressed that he sees room for progress in trade relations between the two countries and that the negotiations will be gain momentum in the spirit of the president’s important visit to South Korea.

“I am truly happy and excited to welcome you to the first summit meeting since 2010. Israel and Korea share common democratic and economic values, and our relationship has grown stronger over the years,’ Moon said.

He spoke of the bilateral trade which reached new heights with a trade totaling at $ 2.7 billion last year. The two countries have been negotiating a free trade agreement for several years.

Israel’s Education Minister Sparks Backlash with ‘Gay Conversion’ Remarks

Education Minister Rafi Peretz generated a backlash of criticism after expressing support for gay conversion therapy in an interview with Israel’s Channel 12 on Saturday evening. (Flash90/Yonatan Sindel)

Rafi Peretz was the target of a wave of criticism from all sides of the political spectrum after saying that gay conversion therapy is possible.

By: WIN Staff

Education Minister Rafi Peretz generated a backlash of criticism after expressing support for gay conversion therapy in an interview with Israel’s Channel 12 on Saturday evening.

“I think it is possible” to convert people with a homosexual “tendency,” Peretz said, adding that he had conducted such therapy himself. “I respect every person, whoever they are,” he also said.

Peretz is the leader of the religious-Zionist Jewish Home party and heads the Union of Right-Wing Parties, a political alliance of several like-minded parties. Peretz, a former air force pilot, also served as chief rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces.

Reaction to his remarks was swift. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly tried to distance himself from Peretz’s comments.

In a Saturday evening post on Twitter, Netanyahu said, “The remarks of the Minister of Education regarding the gay community are not acceptable to me and do not reflect the position of the Government under my leadership. I spoke this evening with Rabbi Rafi Peretz, who made it clear that the Israeli education system will continue to accept all of Israel’s children and children wherever they may be, without any difference of sexual orientation.”

Former Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the New Right party, also weighed in. On Sunday, he said, ”Israeli society consists of a variety of people, and no one has to convert anyone else. We accept every person as he is.”

“The statements made do not represent the majority of the national-religious public that is opposed to the obsessive war against LGBT people. Every person was created in the image of God, every person and every image,” Bennett said.

The opposition parties were also quick to jump on Peretz’s remarks. Benny Gantz, the head of the Blue and White party, Netanyahu’s main opposition, said, “The words of the Minister of Education are serious. Any statements about conversion therapy cannot be legitimate in Israel in 2019. The Blue and White government will promote equality, tolerance and acceptance of the other.

“The right of every person to live according to his faith, opinion and inclination is a cornerstone of Israeli democracy and we will defend it with all our might. We will not lend a hand to the continuation of radicalization and we will restore Israel to sanity and progress.”

Moshe Ya’alon, a leading member of Blue and White, went still further in his criticism, saying “something is happening in Religious Zionism, large parts of which I greatly admire. There are parts there that are politicized, where everyone tries to be extreme about women, in relation to LGBT. This is what I call the process of darkness of the State of Israel.”

Peretz himself later clarified his remarks, according to Kan news. Peretz said, “I did not argue that a boy or a girl should be sent for conversion therapy. During my years as an educator, I met with students who felt terrible distress with their sexual orientation and chose to use professionals to change their orientation.

“What I said in the interview came from my personal acquaintance with similar cases. The education system in Israel under my leadership will continue to accept all the children and children of Israel wherever they may be, without any differences of sexual orientation. That’s what I also made clear in the [initial] interview.”

Bibi Warns Hezbollah: We’ll Hit You with a ‘Crushing Military Blow’

Israeli PM responds to Hassan Nasrallah’s vow to bring the Jewish State to the “verge of vanishing.”

By: WIN Staff

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday that the Jewish State “will hit him and Lebanon with a crushing military blow… if Hezbollah dares to do some nonsense and attacks Israel.”

The prime minister spoke at the weekly Israeli cabinet meeting. He was responding to “Nasrallah’s remarks on his attack plans” which he made in an interview with Al-Manar, a Lebanese satellite television station affiliated with Hezbollah.

In addition to Hezbollah, Al-Manar itself has also been designated by the United States as a global terrorist entity.

In the interview, Nasrallah said that “Hezbollah at minimum is capable of inflicting huge destruction upon the Zionist entity,” the term he uses to refer to Israel.

Al-Manar reported that the Hezbollah leader was speaking on the 13th anniversary of the Second Lebanon War, which took place between Israel and the Iranian-backed terror organization. The war broke out on July 12, 2006 and lasted until August 14, 2006, following the approval of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which called for a full cessation of hostilities.

“Nasrallah stressed that the resistance today is more powerful than before, presenting its developed capabilities which he said will bring the Zionist entity to the ‘verge of vanishing,’” the Hezbollah station reported, adding that the terror chief voiced a “big hope that he will be among those who will pray in Al-Quds,” the Muslim term for Jerusalem.

“Nasrallah presented a map of occupied Palestine. The map showed dozens of Israeli targets to be hit by Hezbollah in any future war,” Al Manar reported.

The leader said his fighters are “well-prepared for the invasion of Galilee,” it added.

“In contrast to Nasrallah, I do not intend to detail our plans,” Netanyahu countered on Sunday.

“It is enough to recall that Nasrallah had – for years – dug terrorist tunnels, which we destroyed within days,” the prime minister told his cabinet.

Nasrallah “ruled out confrontation between Iran and the U.S., noting that Washington knows very well that the war with the Islamic Republic will bear a high cost,” said Al-Manar.      (World Israel News)

Egypt Pushes to Finalize Agreement between Israel & Hamas

By: Baruch Yedid

Egypt over the weekend exerted efforts to finalize a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas while minimizing Qatari influence in the Strip and pushing towards a reconciliation agreement between Hamas and the Fatah.

The Egyptian diplomatic activity took place while facing Hamas’ pressure and Qatar’s opposition, despite the sharp enmity between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Arab sources told TPS that Egyptian pressure on Hamas is meant to soften the terror group’s stance vis-à-vis Israel and the PA while detaching it from Qatari influence.

“Egypt has not forgotten Hamas’ involvement in terrorism in its territory and is not willing to allow the Muslim Brotherhood to gain a foothold in the Strip” the PA source said. “Hamas is suspicious, but above all, Egypt is trying to push Hamas away from the extremists – the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran. Egypt is helping Gaza as a means [to achieve a goal] and not out of sympathy.”

The sources further told TPS that Hamas has blamed Egypt of endorsing Israel’s positions, while the Egyptians believe that Qatar has too much influence on Gaza’s future.

Qatar has been providing heavy financial support to Gaza and by doing so has been influencing Hamas’ policies.

One of the issues under dispute is the possibility of the United Nations monitoring the funds that Qatar passes on to Hamas. Sources report that Egypt has told Hamas that Israel insists on this issue, and Hamas views this as Egyptian support for Israel.

Last month, Israel objected to some of the names on the list of those receiving the funds, and as a result, a smaller sum entered the Strip, and two months ago, a Qatari delay in the transferring of the funds ended with Hamas firing rockets at Israel.

Egypt has been putting pressure on Hamas. One way is by denying Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh a travel permit to Turkey, Qatar and Tehran.

Hamas senior official Musa Abu Marzouq was called for an emergency meeting in Egypt on Thursday to discuss the ceasefire with Israel and the reconciliation with Fatah. Abu Marzouq asked the Egyptians to remove the ban on Haniyeh, but they refused, so Abu Marzouq will lead a Hamas delegation to Russia.

Egypt is also pushing for an agreement between Hamas and Fatah. The PA is demanding the implementation of the 2017 understandings and the control over the crossings in and out of Gaza.

Egypt’s efforts are shadowed by an internal Hamas dispute on how to respond to the IDF’s killing of one of its members on Thursday. The military wing is demanding a sharp reaction, while the diplomatic leadership is seeking to promote the understandings with Israel.

Egypt has so far been successful in maintaining peace.

A testament to the inner rift was expressed by Hamas official Fathi Hamed, who said that Hamas is determined to respond with “death for death” and to kill Jews “with explosive vests made by Hamas.”

Ahmed Yousef, another senior Hamas official, rejected his words and stated that he “understands the rage over the occupation’s crimes against our people, but the language of knives and explosive belts is not the language of politicians and the killing of Jews is an aberration of the religion and ethics and stands in contrast to Hamas’ charter.”

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas appears to be a done deal, and delegations from Qatar and the UN are slated to arrive in Gaza to promote various development projects. Egypt is promoting an industrial zone that will employ 5,000 workers.

DeBlasio in “Waterloo”When the Lights Went Out

0
And speaking of heros, Corey Johnson, the speaker of the City Council, donned the robes of de facto mayor and took over where the real mayor was chatting up some auto workers in the Hawkeye state in order to elevate his now dismal, 0.2% rating in the polls. You couldn’t make this story up. During last Saturday’s massive blackout on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where tens of thousands were left in the dark, Mayor deBlasio was in …..Waterloo, Iowa, on his campaign for the Democrat Presidential nomination. Waterloo is a name associated with losers and that’s a more proper place for Hizzoner to dig his roots into rather than the Big Apple. DeBlasio’s response, at hearing the news, long distance, of this catastrophe, that he would stay the night munching on ears of campaign corn and return home the next day, nailed it for all New Yorkers.

He’s a goner for the nomination and he’s lost it as being respected as a devoted mayor of the city. At the time of his notification of the matter, neither he nor the Con Ed people had any idea of what the problem was nor just when they would get it fixed. It might have gone on for days. Yet Bubba Bill was content enough to wait hours to get home, leaving the mess to his underlings to handle. There are pictures of ordinary citizen, risking their lives, standing at major intersections, in pitch darkness, controlling traffic. They are the heroes of the night, not our mayor.

And speaking of heros, Corey Johnson, the speaker of the City Council, donned the robes of de facto mayor and took over where the real mayor was chatting up some auto workers in the Hawkeye state in order to elevate his now dismal, 0.2% rating in the polls. Johnson kept the city aware of what was going on and how to stay safe, doing the Mayor’s job very competently and making a name for himself while under the gun. A common NYC citizen, Nicole Gelinas of Hell’s Kitchen tweeted: “Mayor Corey Johnson has done a bang-up job during the last five hours. We have no idea what that random guy in Iowa is doing but good luck to him.” And throw in the left to the jaw of deBlasio by none other than Governor Cuomo who stated: “I’ve been governor of New York for eight years. In that time I can count the number of times I left the state on my fingers.”

However, de Blasio is dead in the water as a candidate. To prove it, while in Miami, courting Cuban exiles, he stupidly quoted the mass murderer of Cubans, Che Guevara, with words of revolution, “Hasta la victoria, siempre!” which translates to, “Until victory, always!” Of course, he apologized later when told of what those words meant and who was famous for using them. Perhaps he could spout a few quotations for Mein Kampf when he tries to woo Jews to vote for him. But they know better…..or do they?

Kudos to The Donors Behind Fla Gov Ron DeSantis

Rare is the politician, once elected, who keeps his promises made on the campaign trail. Kudos, then, to Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, who not only attended the opening of the brand new American Embassy in Jerusalem, but recently returned home from a major business and trade trip to Israel where he warmed the hearts of those Jews who voted for him. Sadly, Jews in Florida, many of whom are Jewish-umbilical-cord Democrats, only supported him with 30% of their votes. But, he won and now he is keeping his pre-election promise, to all Jews and Christian Zionists, no matter their political preference, of, “Being the most pro-Israel governor in the country,” if elected. He meant what he said and we are proud of him.

Kudos, then, to Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, who not only attended the opening of the brand new American Embassy in Jerusalem, but recently returned home from a major business and trade trip to Israel where he warmed the hearts of those Jews who voted for him. Photo Credit: Shutterstock

During his visit to the Jewish homeland, DeSantis signed a memorandum of understanding between Florida Atlantic University and Ariel University that was attended by one of America’s foremost benefactors of the Jewish people and Israel, the Adelson’s, Sheldon and Miriam. We must also applaud the giant law and lobbying firms, Gray Robinson and Greenberg Traurig for accompanying The Governor together with such notables as Lothar and Carlyn Mayer, members of the Florida Realtors Association and Simon and Jana Falic, the owners of the international firm, Duty Free America.,whose retail stores are located throughout the world in airports and seaports.

Other sponsors include, MCNA Dental Plans, Geeks and Nerds, a cybersecurity and software company, Visit Florida, which is the state’s tourism arm, Israel Bonds and Tellus, an electronic healthcare provider. All of these people and their representatives made the trip on their own dime. They paid their way!! They were there with DeSantis throughout the trip to make and reinforce business and personal connections that would benefit the citizens of both lands, America and Israel. With the Radical Left pushing for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement against Israel, these notables signaled that they will help to ensure that Israel will remain economically and financially sound. Kudos to this group. We suggest you use and patronize their businesses when you need their services or products.

The names of these above individuals and their firms will now be targeted by those enemies of both DeSantis and Israel. Leave it to the far-left leaning Miami Herald to quote a critic of the trip, thusly: “I understand governors like to go to foreign countries for trade missions, and that’s fine but they shouldn’t be taking money from industries in our state, even if it’s disguised as Enterprise Florida.” We say, nonsense! Governor De Santis is merely doing his job in strengthening Florida’s business community which currently enjoys nearly full employment and shovels in billions of tax dollars to keep Florida in the black. Shame on those who demean the governor’s efforts to “reduce the daylight between America and Israel.” And kudos to those individuals who traveled with him and chipped in for the trip. May G-d bless them and their efforts.

Why Aren’t Real Estate Groups Fighting the Rent Regs???

On June 14, the newly Democrat-controlled NYS legislature passed a number of rent reforms that dramatically limit landlords’ ability to raise rents. According to the Commercial Observer, the law amended the state’s current emergency tenant protection laws, which were first passed in 1974 and have been extended and amended several times since then. Photo Credit: Shutterstock

In the last several decades, New Yorkers have marveled at the plethora of new, luxury buildings that have sprung up across the city. While housing costs have always been a challenge for those who desire to live in the Big Apple, it appears that living in a decent apartment in the city may become the ultimate challenge.

Having offered a background, we now offer a theory. On the surface of this matter, it would appear that low income New Yorkers and others who are struggling to pay their rent each month have now found that the proverbial albatross has been removed from their collective neck. It would appear that the dark cloud of growing concern about rent increases that they can no longer afford has been permanently deleted from their list of worries.

According to those with vast knowledge of the real estate industry in NYC, laws that stop landlords from raising rents will also prevent people who wish to move to New York City with all of their diverse talents that make this city as vibrant as it is. When landlords cannot raise the rent of a new tenant who is taking the apartment of someone who is moving because by doing so they would be in direct violation of the law, then the landlord cannot spend the monies required to refurbish the new apartment and the new tenant will be forced to live with antiquated appliances and in less than stellar conditions.

The squeeze on landlords will also trickle down to tenants and chaos will erupt in the NYC housing industry. What the Jewish Voice is most concerned with is the abysmal failure of the organized real estate industry in this city to have seen this dilemma coming up the metaphorical pike. Not only did the Real Estate Board of New York not have the prescience to see this imbroglio manifesting itself due to the political zeitgeist of socialism that has been wafting in the air for the last several years, but they did nothing to head it off at the pass.

Back on June 26, it was reported that John Banks, who has served as the president of the REBNY for the past five years will be retiring and will be succeeded by James Whelan, a longtime senior executive at the trade group. That seems kind of odd. A man who is only 58 years of age would consider retirement from such a prestigious organization. It appears that Banks is ill prepared to deal with the turbulence that lies ahead for the industry and in fact, did little or nothing to bolster the status and gravitas of the real estate people he was to have represented. That is beyond tragic.

REBNY and other established groups that represent realtors and developers have let their contemporaries down in formidable ways. Not having the courage to stand up to radically left-wing politicians has not only cost the Amazon deal for NYC but will have even more detrimental ramifications. As preeminent NYC building owner and manager Ron Edelstein observed, “Some building owners in NYC definitely believe that this legislation was motivated by a seething anti-Semitism.” The time to act is now to save our city from squalor and deprivation.

Eric Adams’ Issue with a Free Press

0
Members of the media have found it increasingly difficult to find a parking spot in Brooklyn

As journalists who spend our days and nights providing coverage of stories in the fast paced, super charged environment of New York City, we can tell you most succinctly that if you want to get a real scoop for your publication or electronic outfit, you had best be ready to be “Johnny On the Spot” in terms of immediate coverage.

Yes, covering breaking news stories does have its own level of stress, but frankly, what makes matters worse in the County of Kings, better known as Brooklyn, is the fact that press vehicles only have three parking spots allocated to them. And if that were not bad enough, it appears that law enforcement officials take the liberty of parking in these press designated spots.

So, the question can be ask: How can the press possibly cover a story in Brooklyn if they cannot park their car or news van? And who came up with the insane idea that only three parking spots in the entire borough of Brooklyn was sufficient?

Well, the Jewish Voice asked that very question to the Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in the past. While Adams listened passively and uttered some vague statement about correcting this aggravating situation, nothing as yet has been done to rectify this. It should be noted that in Manhattan, press parking spots are most plentiful, and we cannot even draw a comparison between boroughs because the disparity is nothing short of glaring.

As election season fast approaches, we have caught wind of the fact that Eric Adams plans to throw his proverbial hat in the ring and run for mayor of the Big Apple. In the famous adage about the critical importance of a vibrant and diverse media, we learn that “Democracy Dies in Darkness” and as the late Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis famously said, “Sunlight is the greatest disinfectant.” We think that Eric Adams ought to receive constant reminders of this. We firmly believe that if Adams is going to succeed in garnering the chief executive job in City Hall, he had best be educated about the paramount importance of a free press and more practically, he must make it a priority to significantly expand the number press parking spots.

Are We Really Living in the 1930s?

Is there somewhere a sensitive Jewish soul go to escape it all? Not to new books, theater, talk shows, conferences or any other public venue. Jew and Israel-bashing keeps cropping up everywhere

By: Prof. Phyllis Chesler

I was among the handful who began seeing some awful parallels between the 1930s and today. Of course, the 21st century is so much worse because the entire world is involved in defaming Israel and the Jews; now, it is not merely one country or one continent—but via the internet, the Big lies are proclaimed 24/7, and in every language on earth.

History never repeats itself in exactly the same way and so I must ask: Are we really living in the 1930s? Jews are being menaced and murdered on the streets of Europe; that’s happened many times before (but not at Muslim hands which is now the case). However, Jews are also fleeing Europe and that’s new. Most Jews refused or could not do so in the 30s.

Jews are being shot down in American synagogues, cemeteries are being vandalized, young Jews are being slandered and shamed on American campuses. Black face-masked and violent brownshirt-style mobs occupy the streets, the academy, and the internet.

Just recently at the Christians United for Israel (CUFI) conference in Washington, D.C., more than one hundred angry pro-Palestine demonstrators tried to violently storm the building. They were prevented from doing so.

But there’s more. Our infra-structure has been so fully penetrated that the Jew- and Israel-hating propaganda keeps cropping up everywhere.

For example, all in the last month or so: The European Network for Mental Health Service Evaluation cancelled their conference in Jerusalem “over fears of a backlash from the international boycott movement.”

Richard Zimler, a best-selling British novelist who lives in Portugal, was dis-invited to two different literary events in the UK because he is Jewish—and two cultural event organizers backed out of publicizing his forthcoming novel because “the organizations feared his Jewishness would alienate Palestinian sympathizers among their clientele and could result in protests;”

Most shamefully, the United States Holocaust Museum was castigated by more than 300 Holocaust scholars (and in the pages of the New York Review of Books), who demanded that the Museum “retract their objection to drawing any possible analogies to the Holocaust or to events leading up to it.” The Museum issued their statement hard on the heels of AOC’s equation of migrant detention facilities on the U.S.-Mexican border to “concentration camps.”

Finally, according to Elder of Zion, at their annual conference, the National Educational Association, (8,000 delegates representing 3 million public school teachers) tried—but, for budgetary reasons, failed—to pass a resolution inserting Big Lies against Israel into the educational curriculum. The resolution read as follows:

“NEA will use existing digital communication to develop and publish resources to educate members and the general public on the apartheid, atrocities, and gross violations of human rights of Palestinian children and families by the State of Israel, funded directly by the United States….NEA will publish an article in the NEA Today on the work that is being done by our members and organizations fighting for the rights of Palestinian children and families, such as but not limited to: Parents Against Child Detention, HaMoked-Center for the Defense of the Individual, Defense for Children International-Palestine, American Friends Service Committee, US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, Jews Against Anti-Muslim Racism, and Jewish Voice for Peace.

NEA will partner with the No Way to Treat Child Campaign to pressure the Israeli government to end the detention and abuse of Palestinian children.”

Elder and I agree: Those who proposed this will return and keep proposing it until it is passed. They will not stop.

Dear God: Where can a sensitive Jewish soul take a break from all this? After trolling the Dark Side, why not indulge myself in escape entertainment? That, too, is no longer exactly possible.

Soviet-style propaganda has penetrated the American talk shows, the news broadcasts, and television soap operas. I suffered watching the nighttime soaps, including The Good Fight and Madam Secretary because of the dazzling female fashion, (where do they get those gorgeous outfits?), but both programs were merely fictionalized versions of current headlines and were anti-Trump all the time. Of course, the characters were also 1000% politically correct, in terms of race, religion, sexual identity, and point of view.

I shut the TV off, fled my home, determined to focus on Theater. Diversionary entertainment proved impossible. Whatever Broadway or off-Broadway play or musical I attended (and there were several just this past weekend)—waiting for me was naught but politically correct propaganda about the Wall, the Billionaires, ICE, Mexicans in love and in trouble at the border, heartless immigration officials, heartless capitalists, both Jewish and otherwise, and racism, racism, racism.

Nowhere to run, no place to hide.

And then there is the censorship. Recently, a colleague had a very good piece on antisemitism tossed back because—well, the reason does not really matter. There always are so many ways of covering for the discomfort and terror that accompanies any independent writing on Judaism, Israel, or Islam. The piece is too long or too short; it does not cover everything—or it covers too much; it does not source the handful of “good guys” and privileges only the few “rotten apples.”

Earlier this year, after working for a week with a demanding and brilliant editor, she got me to withdraw my piece by placing more and more demands upon it, night after night, and in the middle of my night. This was a piece about the so-called Women’s March leadership in which I criticized their faux feminism. All fine but at the last minute, she wanted me to remove the bits about Jew hatred and the demonization of Israel by these very same faux feminists because it detracted from my more important critique of their failure to denounce FGM, honor killing, face veiling, child marriage, and polygamy.

I refused to do so.

To make my day: I am meeting with a colleague who has begun receiving vicious hate mail because she is an advocate for Israel. I dare not repeat the words which appeared together with her dear photo.

This cognitive war is a bit like clearing the malarial swamps in British Mandatory Palestine, inch by bloody inch or, as my colleague Richard Landes puts it, clearing the Augean Stables.

My Grandfather’s America

As I walked up to the stage to give my speech at Turning Point USA’s Young Jewish Leadership Summit earlier this week, I could only think about one thing. My grandfather’s voice was rushing through my head, almost more clearly than if he had been right there next to me; then again maybe he was.

My grandfather was the proudest Jew I had ever known. He fought with all that he had for his faith in every aspect of his life and taught me to do the same. Growing up I always wondered what he meant when he told me to “fight for my people.” I grew up in New York City, attending synagogue regularly, and loving every minute I spent in my religious Jewish school. I had no idea what it meant to fight to be a Jew. In fact, I had no idea what it meant to fight for anything.

My grandparents believed in sharing history. I was told about the holocaust regularly, and retold and retold.

As a child, thinking about the holocaust kept me up at night. My grandmother often showed me photos of concentration camps and told me stories of Jews who managed to keep their faith even in a time when it seemed impossible. This may have been just a few years ago, but clearly much has changed in such a short amount of time. The term “concentration camp” was one I was never even comfortable saying out loud. The murder of six million Jews was something I couldn’t fathom or begin to understand. This was a time when the term “concentration camp” was not thrown around for political reasons or dramatic effect, clearly a lot has changed.

I often wonder what my grandfather would be feeling and doing if he was alive today; witnessing the anti-Semitism sweeping the country which he loved so much. The country that he risked his life to escape to.

Today, we are living in a time where anti-Semitism has become mainstream. Where members of Congress make jokes and comments about Jews and their connection to money, or “Benjamins baby,” where popular celebrities make antisemitic comments and don’t have to apologize for them, and when one of the most popular newspapers in the world thinks it’s alright to publish a cartoon depicting a Jew and Israeli as a dog on a leash.

We have entered a time where synagogues now must be protected by armed guards. And as grateful as I am by the support and protection we are able to receive in America, I am terrified for the direction that we are heading in. Some days I just sit and wonder what I can do.

In these times I think to what my grandfather would tell me, I know if he was here today, he’d tell me to fight. To fight for my people and what we have been through, to fight for the country that made my freedom possible, and to fight for the young Jewish children that deserve to be brought into a world where antisemitism isn’t accepted or defended.

My grandfather often told me how important it was to stand up for what mattered, even if it meant standing alone. That is why I founded The Exodus Movement. My organization is focused on supporting Jewish Americans, fighting anti-Semitism wherever it appears, and defending Israel and its right to exist. Jewish Americans deserve more than to be taken for granted by people that continuously prove that they don’t support them, and in a time where antisemitism is clearly on the rise, I will make it my mission to make sure that Jewish Americans are never taken for granted again.

President Rivlin’s official visit to the Republic of South Korea

A series of agreements on academic cooperation were signed in the presence of President Rivlin during his visit to Korea, and President Rivlin toured the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between South and North Korea

President Rivlin:

“Higher education is the key to mutual understanding, to universal solidarity to prosperity and peace. That is because science is blind to color, to nationality, to gender or to race. Science builds us as a stronger, more open nation.

The balance between the two forces means they ensure that hostility does not break out. The whole world is watching what happens, similar to the way it views the Middle East.”

A series of agreements on academic cooperation were signed between Israel academic institutions and their Korean counterparts in the presence of President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin. The agreements were signed at a conference attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hae and Chair of the Planning and Budgeting Committee of the Council for Higher Education Prof. Yaffa Zilbershats, who heads the Israeli academic delegation accompanying the president’s visit. Later in the day, the President toured the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between South Korea and North Korea.

“For both South Korea, and Israel learning, education, and excellence are the highest goal. For both people, education lies at the heart of every family’s dream,” the president said at the start of his remarks and continued: “For both people, education is the key for social and economic mobility. It is the power that drives forward not only individuals, but also the entire nation. Korean diligence and academic achievements have become a model for the entire world.”

“The key to our global connections, in Israel and in Korea, lies in higher education. Higher education is the key to mutual understanding, to universal solidarity to prosperity and peace. That is because science is blind to color, to nationality, to gender or to race,” he added.

The agreements signed include programs for student exchanges, joint research and cooperation in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and nanotechnology, including agreements between the Korean Ministry of Education and the Israeli Council of Higher Education; between KAST (Korean Academy of Science and Technology) and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities; between the University of Korea and the University of Haifa, between the University of Korea and the Hebrew University, between Pusan University and the Hebrew University; between Konkuk University and the University of Haifa; between Konkuk University and Ben-Gurion University; between CNU and Bar Ilan University; between KISED and the Hebrew University; between Hanyang University and Ben-Gurion University; between Ajou University and the Technion; between Yonsei University and the Technion; between Yonsei Universit and the Hebrew University; between Yonsei University and Tel Aviv University and between Yonsei and Carmel, a company of the University of Haifa.

Later in the day, the president toured the DMZ between South Korea and North Korea. Upon his arrival, the President signed a brick in the wall signed by all world leaders who visit. Alongside the brick signed by the president, the hosts left an empty brick on which the name Nechama Rivlin ז”ל was written, dedicated to her memory. During the tour, the president heard a briefing by the forces operating in the area, toured the border area of the UN forces stationed there and observed North Korea.

“We’re in one of the places in the world that is truly the mouth of a volcano. And yet the balance between the two forces means they ensure that hostility does not break out. The whole world is watching what happens, similar to the way it views the Middle East. Being here, you can see, learn and understand how volatile places can endanger global peace, “the president said at the North Korean observation point.

The Korean demilitarized zone Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) extends across the Korean peninsula and serves as a buffer zone between the two Koreas. It was created at the end of the Korean War in 1953 and is the most armed border in the world. Along it are sniper positions, mined areas, bunkers and barbed wire that prevent people from entering from north and south. The two countries have nearly two million soldiers, and around 37,000 American soldiers and a large group of UN observers are stationed in the South Korean region. The demilitarized zone has become a successful nature reserve: the DMZ has more than 1,100 plant species and 51 mammal species, which account for 67% of South Korean flora and fauna.

AOC & ‘Concentration Camps’–Opening Up a New Front Against the Jewish People

1
The problem with all of this new found historical education is that the day before AOC’s bogus comparison, had any of these defenders been asked for words to associate with “concentration camp,” they, like the rest of us, would have come up with “Nazis” and “Holocaust.”

By: Harry Onickel

Trivializing the Holocaust is nothing new. When it comes to hyperbole and shock value, de-valuing the Nazi’s attempted extermination of the Jews to score a political point and/or demean the Jews has become standard practice. Demonstrating that there is no bottom to this insulting tradition PETA has even compared modern animal farms to the Holocaust. With that in mind, and with her past record, AOC adopting this approach to malign President Trump with her description of the detention camps on our southern border was predictable.

What’s new with this episode are all of the writers and news services shielding her and defending the indefensible. When the blowback against AOC’s concentration camps analogy began, sycophants were quick to read and research. Over the next few days, they gave us mini-lessons in history and expounded on the differences between concentration camps and death camps. It seems the British used them during the Boer Wars, and there have been American concentration camps. Thanks to this newly reported history, we were assured that AOC’s statement was completely accurate and that no one could deny it. AOC has even jumped back into the melee, insisting that unnamed concentration camp “experts” have backed up her assertion. She refused the invitation of Holocaust survivor, Ed Mosberg to tour Auschwitz, but maybe she considers Mosberg only a specialist, not an expert.

The problem with all of this new found historical education is that the day before AOC’s bogus comparison, had any of these defenders been asked for words to associate with “concentration camp,” they, like the rest of us, would have come up with “Nazis” and “Holocaust.” But times have changed. Now, rather than discover and report the truth, allegedly honest journalists are using facts to obscure the truth. They are trying to reprogram our brains to substitute “Boer War” or “United States” for “Nazis” and “Holocaust,” even though most of the people defending AOC had probably never heard of the Boer Wars or American concentration camps prior to her statement.

None of these “shocking exposes,” written to offer cover to AOC’s ridiculous comparison, can change the fact that concentration camps are associated with the slaughter of Jews, especially when AOC invoked “Never again.” While others have said “Never again” in a variety of contexts, it has special meaning when coupled with concentration camps. One is the result of the other.

George Takei, a reliable AOC defender if there ever was one, offered a sober comparison with his childhood imprisonment in an internment camp during World War II. While the Japanese internment camps were a terrible injustice, nobody was worked to death as Jews were, and I have yet to see photos of emaciated, disease-ridden survivors. Sorry George.

But it’s not just George Takei and AOC. People all over the Internet are now insisting the United States is storing illegal aliens – I mean undocumented immigrants in concentration camps at our southern border. It has entered our lexicon to stay.

One of the reasons this mislabeling is being allowed to stand is the lack of serious history education in public schools and universities. That ignorance allows people to get their information from Internet memes and headlines. The misdirection and lies are fit into bite sized pieces that can easily, and with very little thought, be digested and passed along to friends. Adding to the historical knowledge gap about Jews on the university level are Muslim Brotherhood offshoots like Students for Justice in Palestine. To no one’s surprise, they’ve been force-feeding students anti-Israel/anti-Semitic lessons.

AOC’s alma mater, Boston University, has a vocal SJP chapter. While AOC was probably not a member, judging from her previous statements, her willingness to cut funding for Israel, and her co-sponsoring of House Bill H. R. 2047 – “Promoting Human Rights for Palestinian Children Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act,” she is obviously sympathetic to the SJP agenda. That agenda is made clear every time SJP members loudly and proudly chant, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” To SJP, “free” means free from Jews. SJP is playing the same game as the German neo-Nazi group that updated the old Nazi slogan, “Jews are our misfortune to “Israel is our misfortune,” Then there is AOC’s alliance with Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, both of whom have made Jews and Israel an issue.

The object, which is being pursued on many levels by many individuals and organizations, is to erase the Jews. Not only must Jews be erased from humanity, but in order to completely fulfill this Nazi/SJP/Muslim Brotherhood dream, the Jews must also be erased geographically with the destruction of Israel and historically with the denial or trivialization of the Holocaust.

Taking a step in that erasure, AOC, whether knowingly or unknowingly, is pushing a secular Replacement Theology. It is now illegal immigrants who are victims of concentration camps. This comes after years of SJP promoting the fallacy of “Concentration Camp Gaza.” Each new lie builds on a past lie until it becomes part of the normal discourse. It becomes natural to replace Jews with the Boer War or immigrants, and to replace the Jews of Israel with the “indigenous Palestinians.” Linda Sarsour has been facing blowback for taking that absurdity a step further in repeating Ilhan Omar’s delusion that Jesus was a Palestinian. Omar was echoing Omar Suleiman, an imam who has come out strongly against Israel but in favor of Sharia Law. Suleiman was not even the first to replace Jesus’ Judaism with a Palestinian origin, but it currently remains a lie whose time has not yet come.

We can continue to point out AOC’s trivialization of the Holocaust. We can even continue to give factual information as to why her comparison is bogus and insulting to the memory of the six million Jews who were murdered and to the survivors. The problem is that, willingly or not, she has made herself into another cog in the Jew-hating machine. Other humans in this machine include her high profile allies who took the time to dig for articles and information in order to deny the truth. Followers have condensed these articles into memes and tweets in order to cloud the reality even further, a great example being the tweet stating, “Anne Frank and her sister weren’t gassed. They died of Typhus, a result of living in a crowded camp with poor sanitation.” It received 3,439 retweets and 5,420 likes. It’s unknown how many times it was shared on other social media sites in order to help more people ignore the 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, who were murdered at Auschwitz.

Not everyone who is pushing AOC’s concentration camp agenda hates Jews. Some are political opportunists who have no historical knowledge and are willing to accept Jews as collateral damage in order support AOC’s theatrics and trash Trump. They will march in lockstep with any historical narrative that serves their purpose. They will perform all of the mental gymnastics necessary to buy the hyperbole and the trivialization.

The truly dedicated haters who seek the destruction of the Jews will gladly accept help from these useful idiots parroting AOC and her concentration camp lies. We must also understand that for some, it goes beyond simple Jew-hatred. Judaism being one of the lynchpins of Western Civilization, the desire to destroy the Jews dovetails seamlessly with the rabid desire to bring down the West.

In short, AOC did more than trivialize the Holocaust and launch a thousand Google searches. She opened up a new front in the ongoing culture war.

Acosta’s Resignation May Result in More Losses for Prosecutors

The forced resignation of Alex Acosta based on the plea deal that he made with Jeffrey Epstein’s lawyers (of which I was one) may have serious unintended effects on our system of criminal justice. The criticism of Acosta — whether warranted or not — for making the deal will cause other prosecutors to go to trial in relatively weak cases in which the chances of losing are considerable.

The deal accepted by Acosta was based on the weakness of the government’s federal case. In order for sex with underage persons to be prosecuted federally, as distinguished from prosecution by a state, there has to be compelling evidence of an interstate nexus. Merely having sex with underage females in a local context does not constitute a federal crime. In the Epstein case, this would have required credible testimony or documentary evidence proving transportation of underage females in interstate commerce, or the use of interstate communications such as telephone calls, emails, or the wiring of funds. There was scant evidence of such an interstate nexus in the Epstein case at the time the deal was made. Perhaps there is more now, but that remains to be seen.

At the time the deal was made, there was a relatively strong state case in Palm Beach County, but the federal case was chancy, as Acosta said in his statement. A judge might have dismissed the case or a jury may have found against the government.

Instead of taking the chance of losing the case, Acosta did what many prosecutors do: they compromise based on the relative strength of the prosecution and the defense. The compromise in this case was worked out by Acosta’s assistants and then approved by Acosta and higher-ups in the justice department. There were few red flags at the time, but with the benefit of hindsight, Monday morning quarterbacks have piled on Acosta.

This article, however, is not about Acosta. I hold no brief for him. This is about the impact of Acosta’s forced resignation on current and future prosecutors. Consider the situation of a prosecutor today or tomorrow who has a weak federal case involving sexual allegations. He has two options: the first is he can try to make a deal based on the relative strength of his case and of the defense case. But if he makes that deal, he risks criticism for being too soft on sex offenders. His second option is to take the weak case to trial and risk losing. But even if he loses, the risks to him personally are less great because he can blame the loss on the judge or the jury. A deal, on the other hand, is totally attributed to the prosecutor, as evidenced by the Acosta resignation.

So, a simple cost-benefit analysis will incline a prosecutor to litigate rather than settle.

Today, more than 90 percent of federal criminal cases are settled by a plea bargain. This includes sexual assault cases. In the post-Acosta world, those numbers may well go down, especially in sexual assault cases. The inevitable result will be more trials and more acquittals.

It might be argued that the Epstein case is unique and that other prosecutors will still continue to make deals in weak cases. It will be impossible to quantify the impact of the Acosta resignation on current and future cases, but experienced lawyers with whom I have discussed the case — both prosecutors and defense attorneys — worry that the thumb of media and political pressure will be placed on the scales of justice when it comes to the exercise of prosecutorial discretion and the decision to try or settle a case.

There are traditions and guidelines in the Justice Department that mandate that criminal cases should not be brought to trial unless there is a substantial likelihood of a conviction. That is why federal prosecutors have such a high rate of success in litigating cases — over 90%. In the post-Acosta world, prosecutors will bring cases to trial even if the likelihood of a conviction is questionable, as it was in the Epstein case. The result of this change will be more trials, more crowded courtroom dockets and fewer convictions. That is not good for defendants, victims or for the rule of law.
