Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly is aiming to arrange for former spy Jonathan Pollard to move to Israel just before the upcoming Knesset election.

The premier is trying to set up a scenario in which Pollard would “land on the tarmac at Ben Gurion Airport a week before the March 2” parliamentary election, according to a source from Netanyahu’s Likud party cited in Zman Yisrael, the Hebrew-language site of The Times of Israel.

In 1987, the former U.S. intelligence analyst was convicted in a plea agreement of passing Israel critical classified information that the American government had been withholding from its ally. The court then rejected the agreement and gave Pollard a life sentence — the only American to have received such a harsh punishment for giving over secret information to a U.S. ally.

Several attempts were made throughout the years for his release, including by the Israeli government. He was granted Israeli citizenship in 1995.

President Bill Clinton is said to have offered Pollard’s release in exchange for Israeli concessions in negotiations with the Palestinians in 1998, but reneged on his pledge, some say due to pressure from the CIA director. Netanyahu was serving his first term as prime minister at the time.

Pollard was freed in November 2015, in accordance with the guidelines set at his sentencing, including restrictive conditions that do not allow him to even visit Israel, and certainly not move to the Jewish State.

Netanyahu reportedly requested Pollard’s release in October 2017, again relating to goodwill gestures made by Israel to the Palestinians.

In April 2018, Israeli officials said that President Donald Trump was “seriously considering” letting Pollard go, possibly as part of the larger gesture of moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem in May. Nothing happened then, and a formal Israeli request to the Justice Department was also rejected later in the year.

In February 2019, Pollard told friends that he felt “abandoned” by Netanyahu, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The former American-Israeli spy said that he felt hurt after seeing pictures of Likud campaign posters placed throughout Israel showing Netanyahu with Trump, with both smiling widely, the report says.

If their friendship is so strong, he wonders, why is he still stuck in New York, prevented from moving to Israel after languishing 30 years in a maximum-security prison?

Pollard was speaking then before the April 9 Knesset election. Two elections later, he might, in fact, be allowed to move to Israel, according to the report in Zman Yisrael. (World Israel News)

Will the LaGuardia AirTrain Reduce Congestion?

By: Veronica Kordmany

It’s a well-known fact that New York traffic is, and always will be, painstakingly slow. It’s made painfully clear as someone watches their flight depart from LaGuardia Airport, while they’re stuck in a cab only ten minutes from the airport’s gates. Many can share their frustrating experiences with each other, as missing a flight has, over time, become as common as being stuck in traffic. Alas, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has recently announced a potential solution: a 1.5-mile tram, running from the Willets Point stop on the 7 line, and from the Long Island Rail Road. The $2 billion dollar project, entitled the LaGuardia AirTrain, would provide travelers a 30-minute, traffic-free, ride from Midtown Manhattan to the airport.

A large portion of critics have identified as residents, who are still coming to terms with the airport’s $8 billion dollar reconstruction plan. The plan was enacted after years of raised eyebrows at LaGuardia’s appearance. Former Vice President Joe Biden once compared it to a third-world country. A spokesman for LaGuardia reported, “We are building an entirely new LaGuardia Airport from the ground up and experiencing some growing pains”. The ‘growing pains’ in question are the traffic lanes: the taxi lines are almost always endlessly long, which has contributed to traffic forming at the entrances and exits.

Despite its seemingly stellar potential, critics have pointed out that the routes to an overcrowded subway line, and an isolated LIRR branch line, are unnecessary. Instead, they argue that a bus lane would be much cheaper and just as effective. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began an environmental impact study, promising to make the results of the analysis public. The study is estimated to be complete by spring of 2021, Port Authority verified. Port Authority also estimated that construction will begin later that year and should be finished by 2024. The FAA’s environmental impact study will be preceded with a chance for the residents to chime in: formal public hearings are expected to begin once the study concludes.

Coming to the defense of Gov. Cuomo’s solution, the Port Authority says that service on the 7 line has been improved, thanks to its new signal system. In addition, the LIRR is expected to increase service once the East Side Access project – whose aim is to connect the railroad to Grand Central Station – commences in 2022. Local politicians tried to dismantle the AirTrain project by calling upon a uniform land-use review procedure known as ‘ULURP’. While it was ascertained that this bill would kill the project, Cuomo managed to side-step at the right moment, by bringing in reinforcements. In 2018, a bill that passed in the Legislature gave New York State the authority to seize the land for the project. The bill garnered a lot of support from Queens officials; the AirTrain would completely sidestep Flushing Bay, avoiding the possibility of knocking down the home of any Queens resident.

The defense line draws there, however, as Port Authority and Cuomo must dismantle the idea that the AirTrain is a bad idea.

Push for Rezoning in SoHo Lacks DeBlasio Support; Higher Housing Density at Stake

Push for Rezoning in SoHo Lacks DeBlasio Support; Higher Housing Density at Stake

By: Ilana Siyance

Rezoning for the SoHo or NoHo neighborhoods may remain an aloof idea.

On Friday, Mayor Bill de Blasio made a point of clarifying that the proposed zoning change to allow the construction of new housing in two of the Big Apple’s priciest neighborhoods is still far off.   “Can we put together the support to get something like [SoHo rezoning] done?” the mayor said. “I’m not sure of that at this point.”

As reported by Crain’s NY, activists, including “yes in my backyard”, have been pushing for new zoning which would allow higher housing density in SoHo.  When questioned about it, Mayor de Blasio told WNYC’s Brian Lehrer on the NY public radio show that he and his administration are putting their emphasis in “the places we are convinced we can get something done.”

Housing advocates, including Open New York and the Housing Rights Initiative, have been trying to press de Blasio to work to rezone SoHo to enable more affordable housing to be built.   Other NYC rezoning efforts headed by the mayor seem to be unsuccessful due to fierce neighborhood opposition. This month rezoning efforts for Bushwick, Brooklyn crumbled after four years of planning.  The Inwood rezoning plans are also on hold as of December, as per the order of a judge.

Supporters admit that SoHo is both richer and has more of a white population than any neighborhood the de Blasio administration has tried to rezone.  Getting approval for affordable housing in such a wealthy neighborhood will undeniably be more of a challenge.

The mayor said  “of course”  the city wants affordable housing in neighborhoods of all income levels.   “If the question is Do we need more affordable housing in areas of the city that are privileged … of course the answer is yes,” de Blasio said. But he conceded that residents there will resist the rezoning and wish to preserve the historical nature of the SoHo neighborhood.

The city never committed to rezoning in the neighborhood, but for over a year now they have been working toward some kind of land-use changes there. Towards the end of 2019, the city released a report entitled Envision SoHo/NoHo, which touched upon potential zoning changes for SoHo, along with neighboring NoHo, recommending that city planners explore areas in the neighborhood where density could be increased.  This month, when the findings of the report were discussed with Manhattan’s Community Board, residents were quick to stand up against allowing higher housing density.

Other than the Mayor’s aforementioned comments, the city’s Planning Department has not yet responded or declared its decision about whether or not it would be moving forward with any zoning change for SoHo.

Fire Destroys 85K Artifacts at Famed Chinatown Museum

A fire may have destroyed as many as 85,000 pieces from a respected Chinatown museum.

The fire broke out in a building in which the Museum of Chinese in America’s irreplaceable items, some nearly 200 years old, were stored.

The pieces tell the tale of migration to the U.S. from China through a plethora of textiles, restaurant menus, handwritten letters, and tickets for ship’s passage.

“One hundred percent of the museum’s collection, other than what is on view,” was in the storehouse, according to Nancy Yao Maasbach, the president of the museum.

According to the New York Times, the fire broke out Thursday night at 70 Mulberry Street. The site is a one-time school in which thousands of immigrants received their first taste of American education.

The paper quotes a Buildings Department official who said his inspectors found “significant interior fire damage” to the building. It has been ruled unsafe to occupy. “Nine firefighters and a 59-year-old man were injured in the blaze. The man was rescued from the fifth floor of the building and was reported to be in serious but stable condition, fire officials said. The firefighters sustained minor injuries.”

Founded in 1980, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history, heritage, culture and diverse experiences of people of Chinese descent in the United States, the institution explains on its web site. The greatly expanded MOCA at 215 Centre Street is a national home for the precious narratives of diverse Chinese American communities, and strives to be a model among interactive museums.

“The Museum promotes dialogue and understanding among people of all cultural backgrounds, bringing 160 years of Chinese American history to vivid life through its innovative exhibitions, educational and cultural programs,” it explains. “MOCA welcomes diverse visitors and participants to its broad array of exhibits and programs. MOCA’s expansion accommodates its range of visitors which include: New Yorkers, domestic and international visitors, neighborhood residents, students and school groups from local and regional schools.”

The Museum of Chinese in America:
– curates and displays its expanded collections
– presents exhibits and multimedia productions
– offers education programs and curriculum used in schools
– provide tours for domestic and international visitors through the galleries and the surrounding Chinatown neighborhood
– hosts series programming and multi-year projects that feature contemporary voices and current issues in the Chinese American community
– collects oral histories through its information technology and community-based projects
– hosts festivals, workshops, conferences and resources on Chinese American history
– promotes Chinese American culture through digital channels

Trump’s ‘Deal of the Century’ Rolled Out; “Win-Win Plan for Israel & PA”

On Tuesday afternoon, history was made in terms of possible progress in resolving the protracted and immutable conflict between Israel and the neighboring Palestinians. Known as the Israeli-Palestinian dilemma, the inability to achieve a long-standing and enduring peace between the two distinct peoples that inhabit the land of Israel has been a source of frustration for so many previous US presidential administrations.

Now, the nation’s 45th president, who is currently the subject of an impeachment trial in the Senate, has proposed creation of a Palestinian state with a capital in eastern Jerusalem, dependent on Palestinians taking steps to become self-governing. President Trump said that the plan is an effort to achieve a peace breakthrough in their decades of conflict with Israel, according to a Ha’Aretz report.

The main points of the plan known as the long awaited “Deal of the Century” include 1) two states while safeguarding Israel’s security, 2) a committee that will draw up a detailed map as a basis for negotiations, 3) a four-year freeze on Israeli settlement construction, 4) Jerusalem will remain as Israel’s eternal, undivided capital, and the fifth point is that the Palestinian capital will be located in East Jerusalem.

Addressing the entire world from the East Room at the White House at a little after 12 noon on Tuesday afternoon, President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu both delivered prepared and off-the-cuff remarks on the historic occasion.

“Today Israel takes a big step towards peace,” Trump said at the start of his remarks, as was reported by INN. “Young people across the Middle East are ready for a more hopeful future, and governments throughout the region are realizing that terrorism and Islamic extremism are everyone’s common enemy.”

“Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with both the prime minister of Israel and a man that’s working very hard to become the prime minister of Israel in the longest-running election of all time, Benny Gantz of the Blue and White party. And both leaders joined me to express their support for this effort, proving that the State of Israel is looking for peace, and that peace transcends politics by any measure,” Trump added.

INN reported that Trump said that he was “deeply moved and amazed by what the small country of Israel had achieved in the face of overwhelming odds.”

“The State of Israel comprises only a minuscule amount of land in the Middle East, and yet it has become a thriving center of democracy, innovation, culture, and commerce. Israel is a light unto the world,” Trump declared, as was reported by INN.

As part of his plan, Trump declared that Jerusalem would remain the “undivided capital” of Israel. However, he later stated that the Palestinian Arabs would have a capital in eastern Jerusalem, as was reported by INN.

Inside the plan itself, the Trump administration calls for most of the city to remain unified under Israeli sovereignty, while turning Arab neighborhoods outside of the security barrier into “Al Quds”, the capital of Palestine. He said that the plan also endorsed a Two-State solution.

Trump expressed his sincerest thanks to Prime Minister Netanyahu for “having the courage” to make the concessions necessary for the deal. He further stated that “no Palestinians or Israelis will be uprooted from their homes.” Trump promised that the plan would pose “no security risk” to Israel, according to the INN report.

“We will not allow a return to the days of bus bombings, nightclub attacks, and relentless terror,” Trump said, according to the INN report. “Peace requires compromise, but we will never ask Israel to compromise its security.”

Trump’s peace plan noted that he wanted the deal to benefit the Palestinian Arabs as well.

“Palestinians have aspirations that have not been realized, including self-determination, improvement of their standard of living, social betterment, and a respected place in the region, as well as among the nations of the world. Many Palestinians desire peace and recognize the enormous economic opportunities and social benefits that await them if relations with the State of Israel can be normalized. Gaza is a very complicated situation. It is under the control of Hamas, a terrorist organization, and, as a result of Hamas’ policies, is approaching a humanitarian crisis. It is time to help the Palestinians achieve a hopeful and prosperous future and enable them to join the community of nations,” said Trump.

Trump added that “Palestinians are in poverty and violence, exploited by those seeking to use them as pawns to advance terrorism and extremism. Today’s agreement is an historic opportunity for the Palestinians to finally achieve an independent state of their very own. After 70 years of little progress, this could be the last opportunity for a Palestinian Arab state,” he said.

In terms of a possible last opportunity for the Palestinians to jump on the peace train, Trump quantified that comment by saying that this is the last opportunity to work with the team of people who originally crafted the peace plan. He was specifically referring to his son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner, Kushner’s young assistant, Avi Berkowitz, former Trump administration official Jason Greenblatt and current US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman.

Emphasizing the fact that the aforementioned quartet of negotiators were the ones to be lauded for their diligent efforts in getting the peace plan (or ‘Deal of the Century) off the ground, Trump also offered his effusive thanks and praise to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and others in the state department who also played a significant role in crafting the plan.

Trump also called for benchmarks to be satisfactorily met by the Palestinian Authority in order to progress with the establishment of their own independent state, living side by side with Israel. The executive in chief has required the Palestinians to respect human rights, to end its payments to terrorists, and to engaged in the ongoing fight against terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Describing the concessions Israel would have to make, Trump called for a four-year freeze on construction of Israeli communities in the area earmarked for a Palestinian state under the plan, according to the INN report.

Taking note of an unprecedented event at any conference that the White House has ever held concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Trump mentioned several times that not only did his “Deal of the Century” have the full throated support of many countries across the globe but that such Arab countries as Oman, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates were pivotal in drafting the plan. In fact, their ambassadors were present at the East Room joint press conference.

Concerning Israel’s consistent and steadfast yearning for long-term peace in the tumultuous region they call home, Trump’s peace plan included the following:

“The State of Israel has made peace with two of its neighbors. It made peace with the Arab Republic of Egypt in 1979 and it made peace with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1994, two countries with which the State of Israel had fought multiple wars and numerous border skirmishes. The State of Israel has also exchanged sizeable territories for the sake of peace, as it did when it withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula in exchange for peace with the Arab Republic of Egypt.”

“While Israeli citizens have suffered greatly as a result of violence and terrorism, Israelis still desire peace. These two peace agreements, now 40 and 25 years old, have endured and bettered the lives of citizens in Israel, Jordan and Egypt. The conflict between the State of Israel and the Palestinians has kept other Arab countries from normalizing their relationships and jointly pursuing a stable, secure, and prosperous region.

“One reason for the intractability of this problem is the conflation of two separate conflicts: a territorial, security and refugee dispute between Israel and the Palestinians and a religious dispute between Israel and the Muslim world regarding control over places of religious significance. The absence of formal relations between Israel and most Muslim and Arab countries has only exacerbated the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. We believe that if more Muslim and Arab countries normalize relations with Israel it will help advance a just and fair resolution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, and prevent radicals from using this conflict to destabilize the region.”

At the conclusion of Trump’s remarks, Prime Minister Netanyahu offered his own address, according to the INN report. He thanked the president for his overwhelming support for Israel.

“Your peace plan strikes a balance where other plans have failed,” Netanyahu told Trump. “With everything you’ve done for Israel, I’m not surprised. You are the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House.”

“This is an historic day, and it recalls another historic day when President Truman recognized the State of Israel. You will be remembered in history; you charted a brilliant future for Israelis and Palestinians,” Netanyahu added, as was reported by INN.

INN reported that Netanyahu stated that under the peace plan, Israel’s sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and other strategically vital parts of Judea and Samaria would be recognized.

In addition, all Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria would also be recognized as under Israeli sovereignty, including Biblical cities such as Hevron and Shiloh.

Netanyahu called Trump the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House, adding that “it’s not even close.”

He said that the ‘Deal of the Century’ “addresses the root cause of the conflict by insisting that the Palestinians will finally have to recognize Israel as the Jewish State.”

Netanyahu said that if the Palestinian Authority “are genuinely prepared to make peace with the Jewish State,” then Israel “would be prepared to negotiate peace right away.”

He agreed to “maintain the status quo” in areas not designated as part of Israel under the plan for four years, while applying sovereignty in the rest of the land, according to the INN report.

Turning to Trump, Netanyahu said: “Like you, Mr President, I understand the magnitude of this moment. With you, Mr. President, I am prepared to seize the moment and change history.”

“Mr. President, your Deal of the Century is the opportunity of the century, and rest assured, Israel will not miss this opportunity.”

Security responsibility for the Jordan Valley would remain in Israel’s hands for the foreseeable future but could be scaled back as the nascent Palestinian state builds its capacity, under the terms of the plan, which says that statehood will be contingent on the Palestinians meeting international governance criteria, according to an AP report.

The AP reported that U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of the plan’s release, said they expected negative responses from the Palestinians, as well as Turkey and Iran, but were hopeful that Jordan and Egypt, the only two Arab nations to have peace treaties with Israel, would not reject it outright.

The Palestinians have already rejected the proposal, accusing Trump of being biased in favor of Israel as he has adopted policies that bolster Israel at their expense, as was reported by the AP.

The Palestinians refuse to even speak to Trump and they called on support from Arab leaders. The Palestinian leadership also has encouraged protests in Judea and Samaria, raising fears that the announcement in Washington could spark a new round of violence.

In a call for unity as Trump rolled out his Mideast peace plan, the leaders of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas held an “emergency” meeting on Tuesday in Ramallah to discuss a cogent and cohesive strategy in response.

“We invited the Hamas movement to attend the emergency meeting of the leadership and they will take part in the meeting,” senior Palestinian official Azzam al-Ahmed said.

On Monday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas held a closed-door meeting with the Fatah leadership. “Trump is a dog and the son of a dog,” Al Mayadeen TV station quoted Abbas as saying. “This is a sh*t person, a bastard who wants to force a plan on us that we don’t want. His government is a government of dogs. I was told I’ll pay a heavy price for my foolish behavior. I do not have much longer to live and I will not go down as a traitor. It’s either dying like martyrs or flying the Palestinian flag on the walls of Jerusalem,” he said. Photo Credit: Wikipedia

World Israel News reported that relations between the rival Palestinian factions have been strained ever since 2007 when Hamas overthrew the Palestinian Authority in Gaza. Sporadic efforts to reconcile their differences have unsuccessfully been attempted over the years, but in more recent times, Abbas is believed to have “seldom communicated” with senior Hamas leaders.

Palestinian protests have been scheduled to take place in the Jordan Valley, Gaza, and Judea and Samaria on Wednesday, as was reported by INN.

His government is a government of dogs.”

“I was told I’ll pay a heavy price for my foolish behavior. I do not have much longer to live and I will not go down as a traitor. It’s either dying like martyrs or flying the Palestinian flag on the walls of Jerusalem,” he said.

The JPost reported on Tuesday that the Saudi Foreign Ministry responded to Trump’s peace plan, stressing the Kingdom’s support for “all efforts aimed at reach a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian cause,” in a tweet.

The ministry pointed to the Arab Peace initiative in 2002 that stressed that “a military solution to the conflict has not brought peace or security to any party, and that comprehensive and just peace is a strategic option.”

The JPost reported that the Kingdom encouraged the start of direct peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis under the auspices of the United States and “to resolve any disagreements with the plan through negotiations.”

Arab League chief, Ahmed Abuel-Gheit said the Palestinian reaction would define the Arab response to Trump’s peace plan. He spoke after meeting with Palestinian offices Jibril Rajoub at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.

The reaction of Jordan, which would retain its responsibilities over Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque under the plan, will be particularly significant, according to the officials, who said Kushner and others were reaching out to Arab leaders ahead of the rollout.

AP reported that the 50-page political outline of Trump’s peace plan for the Middle East goes further in concessions to the Palestinians than many analysts had believed was likely. However, it would require them to accept conditions they have been previously unwilling to consider, such as accepting settlements.

It builds on a 30-page economic plan for Judea and Samaria and Gaza that was unveiled last June and which the Palestinians have also rejected. Under the terms of the “peace vision” that Jared Kushner has been working on for nearly three years, the future Palestinian state would consist of Judea and Samaria and Gaza, connected by a combination of above-ground roads and tunnels, making it a contiguous state.

Also on Tuesday, an Israeli settlement group said that the population of Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria surged by more than 3% in 2019, well above the growth rate of Israel’s overall population, according to an AP report. It predicted even higher growth this year thanks to a nascent building boom made possible by friendly policies of the Trump administration.

World Israel News reported that Netanyahu’s spokesman announced that the Israeli leader will ask his Cabinet on Sunday to approve his plan to annex parts of Judea and Samaria.

Jonathan Urich made the announcement on Twitter late Tuesday, shortly after Netanyahu joined Trump for the unveiling of a new U.S. peace plan, as was reported by WIN.

The plan calls for leaving the strategic Jordan Valley and all Jewish towns in Judea and Samaria under Israeli control.

INN reported that the Jewish settler movement, known as the Yesha Council weighed in with their opinions on the Trump plan. They indicated that they were bitterly disappointed that Netanyahu had agreed to the formation of an independent, contiguous Palestinian state in the middle of Israel’s heartland.

Yesha Council Speaker David Elhayani said, “We are very disturbed. We cannot agree to a plan that would include the establishment of a Palestinian state that would pose a threat to the State of Israel and a great danger to the future.”

“We declare that we will not allow the establishment of a Palestinian state even at the cost of giving up on sovereignty in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley. We demand that the prime minister, ministers and Knesset members not accept a comprehensive agreement within which a Palestinian state is established in any way. ”

INN reported that in an interview with Kan Bet, Elhayani said, “We came to Washington to bolster the prime minister and congratulate Trump. But after we processed things, we realized that the peace plan includes a Palestinian state. I am shocked that Netanyahu agrees to a Palestinian state in Judea and Samaria.”

Gush Etzion Regional Council Head Shlomo Ne’eman said after the meeting in Washington with Prime Minister Netanyahu alongside Yesha leaders: “Last night we completed our meeting with the Prime Minister Netanyahu and Minister Levin. I arrived here at the White House with fellow Yesha leaders Yisrael Gantz, Oded Revivi, and David Elhayani represent Judea and Samaria so that during negotiations at his historic and exciting juncture, the Prime Minister would hear what our red lines are,” as was reported by Israel National News.

“We are confident that the Prime Minister will continue to uphold the principles of the State of Israel and Judea and Samaria.”

Ne’eman added, “We will continue to develop Judea and Samaria and will not abandon any part of the Land of Israel. Please G-d we will be witness to the application of sovereignty, something which is an historical achievement not only for the State of Israel but on a grand scale for Jewish history as well. This moment is developing before our eyes.”

The Jewish News Syndicate reported that the Israel Defense Forces took the preemptive step of moving an infantry battalion to the Jordan Valley on Tuesday. This move gives the military an added layer of flexibility to deal with a range of possible scenarios in the event that hostilities should erupt amongst Palestinians.

While few in Israel expect a major escalation to follow Trump’s announcement, the Israel Defense Forces is conducting ongoing situation assessments to keep its finger on the pulse, as was reported by JNS. The Israeli defense establishment is preparing to study the details of the proposal closely to see what conclusions can be drawn in terms of potential security ramifications.

The IDF’s preparations also include stepped-up intelligence gathering in the West Bank and conducting dialogue with a variety a variety of influential elements in the area. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi completed a tour of the West Bank on Tuesday afternoon together with Defense Minister Naftali Bennett.

Col. (res.) Moshe Elad, one of the founders of the security coordination between the IDF and the Palestinian Authority, told JNS that he doubted any significant ignition of popular violence was about to occur, and that sporadic demonstrations were more likely.

“I believe that the Palestinian public of 2020 is not the same as it was during the first intifada in 1987, and certainly not like it was in subsequent escalations,” said Elad, a lecturer at the Western Galilee College. “The Palestinians are still angry at the State of Israel, but they’re also looking at Gaza; they see the conditions there, and they do not want to reach that. The conditions for them are good, and they fear closures and disorder disrupting their lives.”

Reactions to the peace plan from those stateside also came streaming in on Tuesday afternoon. The leadership of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the nation’s largest pro-Israel Christian evangelical organization, said in a statement released to the media:

“President Trump has shown time and again that he is the most pro-Israel president in U.S. history. This plan reflects that tradition and is the best peace proposal any American administration has ever put forth. The President’s vision ensures Israel’s defensible borders, a united Jerusalem, sovereignty over biblical holy sites, and provides an opportunity for the Palestinians to choose peace,” said CUFI founder and Chairman Pastor John Hagee, who attended Tuesday’s formal announcement of the proposal at the White House.

“CUFI, as we have since our founding, stands with the decisions of the democratically elected government of Israel. We hope the Palestinian leadership will not miss yet another opportunity for peace in the region,” Hagee added.

Within the ‘Deal Of The Century’ the Trump Administration’s reported proposal to create a tunnel corridor linking Hamas-run Gaza to the Palestinian Authority-run territories would pose an extreme danger to Israel’s security,” stated Moshe Phillips, Herut North America’s national director. “The creation of a tunnel highway and railway linking the Gaza Strip to those parts of Judea-Samaria that are controlled by the Palestinian Authority would slice across Israel’s middle and would connect and thereby significantly strengthen the potential military capacity of these two perennially hostile anti-Israel regimes.”

Herut North America is a pro-Israel movement that stands for Jewish sovereignty in all the Land of Israel, human rights, and Zionist education.

Herut believes that it should be clear that the tunnel aspect of the Trump team’s “Deal of The Century” proposal would critically endanger Israeli civilians.

“If Hamas starts sending camouflaged truckloads of missiles through the tunnel corridor, will American inspectors be on hand to intervene? Would the war-weary American public accept the stationing of U.S. armed forces in such a hostile situation?” asks Moshe Phillips.

Jury Selection Begins in Michael Avenatti Nike Extortion Case

Jury selection began on Monday for the lawsuit filed against former lawyer Michael Avenatti, who is being tried for conspiracy to commit extortion against multinational, multibillion-dollar corporation, Nike. Avenatti is facing charges after he threatened Nike lawyers, to take allegations of corruption public – unless they paid him millions in return for his silent investigation, in March 2019. At the time, Michael was representing youth basketball coach Gary Franklin, who claimed to have the inside scoop on backroom practices that the company was concealing from the public record.

The 48-year old is sticking to his claim of innocence, while awaiting trial at the infamous Metropolitan Correctional Center, former jailhouse of Jeffrey Epstein and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. He was formerly out on bail, until it was revoked by a judge in January 2020, for violating the terms of his release after he allegedly laundered money.

The investigation into Michael Avenatti shows that he was up to his neck in debt. Prosecutors believe the incident with Nike was an opportunity for the lawyer to shave off a little bit of the $15 million amount he owed. Avenatti told reporters, “Any claim that I had $15 million in debt at the time of my arrest is bogus and absurd,” he said. “I look forward to the trial in this case at which time I will be fully exonerated and the truth will finally be known.”

Prosecutors conducted the investigation in order to determine the motive for the former lawyer’s actions, as well as his innate desperation for money. What the investigation proved is that Michael’s debts range from his purchases of three cars – a race car, a Ferrari, and a Porsche – to people in his life, such as his former wives, law partner, and even celebrity lawyer, Mark Geragos, prosecutors wrote in court papers dated December 2019. Avenatti’s lawyer, Scott Srebnick, countered that the information holds no relevance, and would only force the jury to “…engage in class-based bias regarding the defendant’s wealth.”

What put him on the map is one of his celebrity clients: a porn star who goes by the stage name ‘Stormy Daniels’, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, who he represented in her lawsuit against President Donald Trump. Clifford hired Avenatti to invalidate her non-disclosure agreement with the President, after she allegedly had an affair with Trump. Since his arrest, Daniels has dropped the lawsuit and fired her lawyer.

Avenatti faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty. He is also currently wanted in New York and California for stealing settlements from clients such as Daniels.

Six Women to Testify Against Harvey Weinstein as Sex Abuse Trial Continues

American jurisprudence guarantees a man the right to face his accusers. Still, they usually don’t come half a dozen at a time.

Six women are set in the process of testifying against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who faces charges of sexually assaulting two of them.

The most spectacular testimony figures to come from Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra, who has already said publicly that Weinstein forcibly raped her in 2003. another has accused Weinstein of forcibly performing oral sex on her in 2006. Another of the women who will testify is accusing Weinstein of sliding his hand into her vagina during a business meeting. Yet another claims he put his hands on her in the hotel room and masturbated in front of her.

All of the women will be testifying against Weinstein at his trial in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, one of the most sensational trials in recent memory period in all, nearly 100 women have accused Weinstein of a variety of sexual misconduct’s such as rape, unwanted touching comma and sexual harassment. Indeed, the first of the accusations was what sparked what has come to be known as the #metoo era.

In her opening remarks last week, prosecutor Meghan Hast said that Weinstein, 67, used “his power and prestige in the entertainment industry to ensure their silence.”

The criminal indictment charges Weinstein “with sexually assaulting two of the women, but the remaining four will testify about their encounters with him to show a pattern of abuse. Mr. Weinstein is accused of five felony counts, including rape and predatory sexual assault. He faces life in prison if the jury of seven men and five women convict him of the last charge,” reported the New York Times. “The prosecution’s case turns on whether jurors believe the women’s testimony. Prosecutors have no physical evidence to support their accounts.”

Former production assistant Mimi Haleyi has said that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her in his New York City. “The 42-year-old Haleyi, whose legal name is Miriam Haley, is the first of the two women whose accusations are at the heart of the charges against Weinstein to take the stand at the closely watched #MeToo-era trial, which is in its fourth day of testimony,” ABC News noted.

“At some point, he came towards me and lunged at me, trying to kiss me,” she told the jurors. “I got up from the sofa and I said, ‘Oh no.’ I kind of rejected him and pushed him away and he just came back and kept kissing me and fondling me. I got up and tried to walk away from him but he pulled me towards him. He was kind of walking toward me and I was walking backwards trying to get away. I walked backwards. … I was backed into a bedroom that was on the corner of that open space area, through the door. I walked backwards because he was pushing me with his body until I got to the bed and I fell backwards onto the bed and I tried to get up and he pushed me down.”

UK Cop: Epstein’s Mistress Ghislaine Maxwell was Regular Visitor to Buckingham Palace

While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been making headlines the last few weeks, news about the mysterious death of notorious pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his equally enigmatic mistress Ghislaine Maxwell seems to have disappeared.

Last week The Sun UK reported that a top pathologist has claimed there is evidence that Epstein was probably murdered and did not hang himself in his prison cell, as was originally reported in August.

New York City’s former chief medical examiner Dr Michael Baden points to burst capillaries in the fiend’s eyes as a big clue to him being manually strangled.

“In a hanging, the arteries and the blood vessels, the veins are both clogged off and the person is pale. The face is pale,” Dr Baden declared on the Dr. Oz program. Baden is convinced Epstein was murdered.

Meanwhile, apparently Prince Andrew was so close to pedophile extraordinaire Jeffrey Epstein, the N.Y Post reported that he would allow Epstein’s madam Ghislaine Maxwell to secretly come to Buckingham Palace up to four times a day, his former police protection officer claimed.

“We’ve got a guest coming for Andrew but the name is not to be entered in the book,” Paul Page, a former London Cop claims he was told by the Palace’s property managers the first time he saw Maxwell visit in 2001.

“Half an hour after that, me and my colleague walked through the garden to go back to the police lodge and he was having a picnic with her by the summer house, opposite the Queen’s bedroom window,” claimed the ex-cop.

“One of my colleagues saw her come in and out the Palace four times in one day.”, the officer who was Andrew’s royal protection officer from 1998 to 2004 told British media.

Maxwell has been accused in numerous court filings of procuring young girls for Epstein, her ex. IT has long been rumored she is the center of the entire Epstein investigation. Essentially a high-level madam, involved with allegedly trafficking sex minors was a regular at Buckingham Palace.

Virginia Giuffre has accused Maxwell of trafficking her to Prince Andrew.

Maxwell has tried very hard to remain low profile and out of the news even as she is involved with several lawsuits.

Maxwell’s team of lawyers recently appeared before Judge Loretta Preska regarding the defamation case of accuser Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was recruited by Maxwell to be Epstein’s sex slave and trafficked to Prince Andrew and other high-profile men. Andrew denies the allegations, TJV previously reported.

Giuffre is suing Maxwell for defamation after being called a liar, by the glorified pimp.

“If his legal team thought there was any possibility of indictments coming his way, they’d have shut the idea of doing the TV interview down,” officer Page told the Sunday Mirror. “So, he must have had some guarantees that this isn’t going anywhere to publicly speak.”

He was referring to an interview with Andrew on the BBC where he spoke fondly of Maxwell.

The animal accused of being the machete-wielding so-called Hanukkah stabber, Grafton Thomas, is too nuts to stand trial, according to a psychiatrist.

The trial involves federal hate crime charges for allegedly stabbing five religious Jews last month.

The lawyer representing Thomas, Michael Sussman, had requested a competency evaluation for his client, he said yesterday in a prepared statement.

The alleged attacker, 37, stands accused of using an 18-inch machete to carry out the horrifying attack. He pleaded not guilty to 10-hate crime charges. One of the victims, 72-year-old Josef Neumann, is still in a coma, having suffered injuries including a fractured skull and other injuries.

Thomas “has also pleaded not guilty to state charges, including attempted murder, stemming the same attack,” reported the New York Post. “At his arraignment for those charges, prosecutors argued he was mentally fit to stand trial for the “deliberate and intentional” crime. Thomas is being held without bail in federal custody.”

Sussman’s prepared statement noted that in Dr. Andrew Levin’s judgment Thomas “was not competent to stand trial… “He has no history of like violent acts and no convictions for any crime. He has no known history of anti-Semitism and was raised in a home which embraced and respected all religions and races. He is not a member of any hate groups.”

The attorney, along with Thomas’ mother, “have maintained that his mental illness and going without his medication triggered the vicious attack that left six Hasidic Jews injured, including 72-year-old Josef Neumann, who remains in a coma with a fractured skull. They claimed Thomas, 37, had no violent tendencies — despite one arrest on a charge of assaulting a police officer — nor was he anti-Semitic,” according to recordonline.com.

According to Sussman’s statement, Thomas, has been through a period of mental decline for more than a decade, and was on no fewer than three meds to manage both depression and psychosis. He was, in fact, placed in a hospital for nearly a week back in April for reasons having to do with his mental health.

Rev. Wendy Paige, the pastor of Harriman United Methodist Church, called the alleged machete-swinging maniac a “calm, caring person” and an introvert who clearly struggled with mental problems that sometimes caused him to have trouble finishing his sentences, according to lohud.com. She added, “He’s always been a gentle giant with mental illness.”

Sussman tried to divert attention from his client by warning against stigmatizing mental illness. “There are plenty of people whose mental illness is controlled by medication, and they’re not dangerous in this way and they don’t act out in this way.”

Mark Weissman may well be a tzaddik – just ask his friends, and they will tell you the by-now famous stories about his generosity and kindness. But he is in trouble with the law, a fact that has left many scratching their heads.

The resident of the Five Towns, hailed by many as an exemplar, is scheduled to be sentenced in two days after having pleaded guilty to helping a longtime friend attempt to extort $6 million from a third man who has been described in the press as “a mastermind behind the biggest penny-stock fraud ever orchestrated in New York.”

Friends and relatives “are horrified that Weissman got sucked into a den of thieves. But some say they feared his strong desire to help others would get him into trouble,” Crain’s New York reported. “When I first heard about the case against him, I thought to myself, Well this time he overdid his kindness and got himself in a lot of hot water,” Moshe Deutsch, who has known Weissman for more than 30 years, told a judge.”

It was last June when Weissman pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding. He had, according to Long Island Business News, “participated in a scheme to hinder another person’s court-ordered obligation to pay millions of dollars in restitution to victims of a securities fraud case, according the U.S. Justice Department.”

Following his plea, Weissman was held “responsible for attempting to impede the execution of a restitution judgment that was to be paid to victims of a massive fraud,” U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said in a statement.

“Records show that two people had pleaded guilty in federal court in Brooklyn to securities fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud and money-laundering conspiracy. When sentenced in 2014, the individuals, who were not named by the Justice Department, were ordered to pay $12.7 million in restitution to the victims, officials said,” LIBN reported.

Weissman was charged in the plot with Andrew Tepfer, who according to Newsday pleaded guilty to securities charges involving a company called Spongetech in 2012, and was liable for $12.7 million in restitution as part of his sentence. Tepfer has pleaded not guilty.

“With today’s guilty plea, Weissman has been held responsible for attempting to impede the execution of a restitution judgment that was to be paid to victims of a massive fraud,” said Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue.

Deaths continue to climb in China as the new coronavirus that began in the Chinese city of Wuhan has already killed 81 people in China, as of press according to the N.Y Times

Infections have been confirmed in many other countries.

But of the nearly 3,000 people who have so far contracted the virus, the vast majority live in China, the Times reported.

Locally, it was reported by the NY Post: “Three possible coronavirus cases in New York were proven to be negative by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while results on four others are pending”

“While experts still believe the risk of catching this novel coronavirus is currently low in New York, I want all New Yorkers to know we are prepared and continue working closely with the CDC, the World Health Organization, our local and federal government partners, and New York’s health care providers to ensure we stay ahead of this situation,” Cuomo said in a statement.

The N.Y Times reported: “Thailand and Hong Kong have each reported eight cases of infection; the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Macau have five each; Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia each have reported four; France has three; Canada and Vietnam have two, and Nepal has one”

These numbers and data will constantly change.

Meanwhile, Zero Hedge reported “US stocks are deep in the red Monday morning, on track for their worst day in four months, thanks to the fact that the market and the world realized over the weekend that the extremely infectious novel coronavirus has overwhelmed China’s capacity to contain it”

President Trump tweeted shortly after the market opened: “We are in very close communication with China concerning the virus. Very few cases reported in USA, but strongly on watch. We have offered China and President Xi any help that is necessary. Our experts are extraordinary!”

Zero Hedge News blog also reported: “Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the Director of the Center for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), spoke on behalf of the CDC. During the press conference, she said that the US had identified 110 people who are under observation and being tested for the virus. While 5 cases have already been identified in the US, another 32 have definitively tested negative.

Though a vaccine remains elusive, the Messonnier said the CDC had developed a diagnostic test that can quickly confirm cases of the virus. So far, CDC researchers have seen no signs of “mutation” in the virus. If the virus does mutate, as Chinese scientists suggested it might, that could create problems for those trying to develop the exam. On Friday, a “blueprint” for the test was uploaded and shared with the world. All governments can now follow this blueprint to develop their own tests

The CDC has also uploaded the entire genome of the virus from the first two cases. From what the CDC can tell so far, the virus doesn’t appear to be “mutating”, as some Chinese officials had suggested”

A blaze has laid waste to a new building that is part of a Fallsburg Yeshiva girls school.

An emergency fund has been launched to help rebuild the edifice.

Bnos Devorah Raizel Elementary School was, according to Vos Iz Neias, a structure that “represented dreams and aspirations. The dreams of its founders and the aspirations of its young students.”

The school had long ago outgrown its facilities on Reb Chiya Way on the campus of Yeshiva Gedolah Zichron Moshe of Fallsburg. It was two years ago that construction began on a new school building situated on Laurel Park Road, across the street from the school’s current trailers and bungalows.

The design would have seen the building serve as home for nearly 200 students. The project was nearing its end, and plans were already been drawn up for a celebration of its opening.

“And then the unthinkable happened,” noted Vos Iz Neias. “On the morning of Thursday, January 23, the dreams of a new building went up in smoke – very literally. A massive blaze broke out at the construction site of Bnos Devorah Raizel’s building, completely destroying the structure, leaving behind nothing more than a pile of rubble.” The few hundred students of the school have been located in temporary trailers.

The Jewish community, however, is always resilient. Less than a day after the devastating blaze, groups got together to launch a campaign aimed at raising money to restore what had been destroyed period school officials promised to rebuild and carry on.

Bnos Devorah Raizel, the Bais Yaakov of the Fallsburg Yeshiva community, is named for Mrs. Devorah Raizel (Debbie) Shick a”h bas Reb Avrohom Yosef and Pessia Frankel, the school is a home away from home for its many students. The school started in a small house left from the original Laurel Park Hotel and grew from classes of four students to classes of 25 and now close to 200 girls.

Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Gedolah of South Fallsburg, drafted a letter in which he asks Jews around the world to take part in assisting the school recoup its losses. Reimbursement via an insurance policy will not come close to covering the cost of rebuilding, he said. He called it absolutely vital to raise the money from among the Jewish community so that education of young Jews can continue.

“The fire will not get us down,” said Rav Ephraim Sher, Nosi of the Fallsburg Yeshiva, shortly after the blaze. “With Hashem’s help, we have started rebuilding today.” In fact, the school has established a goal of raising $500,000 in order to ensure the construction of a building for Bnos Devorah Raizel l’sheim ul’tiferes.

Those who wish to participate in the emergency campaign are invited to go to: https://www.rayze.it/rebuildfallsburg/ or call 845-767-8100.

FBI Probes Academic Fraud in NYC Schools; Carranza Under Fire for Failures

Last year New York City schools Chancellor Richard Carranza was under fire after MS 158 in Bayside became a flashpoint after the brutal videotaped cafeteria beating of a student and a classroom sexual assault in December. Photo Credit: YouTube

By: Jared Evan

Late last year a Queens Council member asked the Department of Justice to investigate “deep-rooted fraud” in NYC schools, and the FBI has begun looking into this issue.

“Due to the apparent pattern of conspiracy to cover up such deep-rooted fraud within the DOE that has likely been going on for many years now, I have been advised that this could constitute a federal RICO investigation,” Council member Robert Holden’s wrote in an Oct. 25 letter to US Attorneys Geoffrey Berman in Manhattan and Richard Donoghue in Brooklyn, the N.Y Post reported.

The scandal seems to go back to de Blasio appointee and “social justice warrior” Chancellor Richard Carranza. It was discovered that schools were passing almost every student in math and English, even though they are showing low proficiency.

Carranza made news over the last several years for his race based educational agenda, which did away with many gifted programs for students, because of the gifted programs racial makeup. This topic has been written and covered extensively over several years, outraging parents all over New York City.

Last year Carranza was under fire after MS 158 in Bayside became a flashpoint after the brutal videotaped cafeteria beating of a student and a classroom sexual assault in December.

Carranza has had very bizarre policies against student discipline and suspending students, again his reasoning is race based. Parents of MS 158 students were outraged the school did nothing after the violence and sexual assaults.

In other words, Carranza’s policies have created chaos in public schools, with educators afraid to discipline students who are black or Hispanic, because of Carranza’s disastrous policies.

“To me, that suggests that standards have been lowered in the classrooms, and individual school administrations may even be passing students that haven’t performed well or learned much of anything,” wrote Holden, a former CUNY professor in his letter to US attorneys

“The Chancellor has completely ignored my concerns thus far,” he wrote.

The N.Y Post reported: “Holden sent a letter in November to Donoghue in Brooklyn and US Attorney Geoffrey Berman in Manhattan, saying “an apparent pattern of conspiracy to cover up” grade-fixing, cheating and other wrongdoing might warrant an investigation under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), which covers criminal enterprises.”

According to Holden: teachers say administrators encouraged cheating on exams, enforced a “no-fail policy,” and retaliated against staffers who didn’t go along with it.

Last year it was reported that The Special Commissioner of Investigation (SCI) for city schools were sitting on nine cases of waste, fraud and corruption involving the upper echelons of City Hall and the Department of Education.

Investigations against Carranza and de Blasio’s wife were completely ignored.

A whistleblower letter stated: “ “While SCI is doing more work, the quality of the cases being pursued is zero-to-none, and cases that are systematic in nature or that do show major fraud can’t be worked on because of a lack of resources or time,” the letter says.

It also complains that SCI lawyers “have taken up to 300 days or more” to review and close cases — leaving DOE employees in limbo even if accusations are unsubstantiated.

“Almost 8 years of New York City under de Blasio, we have witnessed more corruption, failure and wasted money than NYC has ever seen, yet the local media barely covers it. The NYC Democrats operate like the mafia”, Anthony Logan, a political analyst casually told TJV.

Push for Rezoning in SoHo Lacks DeBlasio Support; Higher Housing Density at Stake

0
Supporters admit that SoHo is both richer and has more of a white population than any neighborhood the de Blasio administration has tried to rezone. Getting approval for affordable housing in such a wealthy neighborhood will undeniably be more of a challenge.

Bloomberg Pursues Jewish Voters in “United with Mike” Campaign

Michael Bloomberg wants Jewish votes and donations, and so he has launched

United for Mike, which targets Jews.

On Sunday, his team officially introduced the program at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center in Miami. Its director will be author Abigail Pogrebin.

Many have argued that the Democratic approach of targeting individual demographic groups is divisive, but Bloomberg apparently knows he must work within the Democratic template. He hasn’t generated a lot of enthusiasm.

As The Economist noted dryly: “Mr Bloomberg has run for office as a Republican, as an independent and now as a Democrat. In a country where voters often claim to want bipartisanship but usually vote as if the other lot are rogues, this is risky. Mr Bloomberg has pitched himself as a counter-weight to left-wingers such as Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, who he says are “not well-positioned” to defeat President Donald Trump. He has outlined an ambitious, leftish policy agenda while disavowing Medicare for All, the signature health-care proposal on the left of the party. Mr Bloomberg might yet become the Democrats’ pick for the White House, but the odds are slim, and his campaign will first have to overcome a problem: currently voters dislike him more than any of the other serious candidates running for president. He is a lot more unpopular than Mr Trump.”

Even the left-leaning publication The Hill doesn’t think much of his candidacy. As they reported recently, “For most Democrats, rightly fixated on beating Donald Trump, Michael Bloomberg’s campaign for President is about the last thing they need. The bitter irony is that Bloomberg, a mega-billionaire, lifelong Republican, and New York conservative, has no chance of actually winning this year’s populist-leaning Democratic nomination himself. But his candidacy holds a host of dangers for Democrats and could complicate their efforts to defeat Trump.”

Bloomberg grew up in Medford, Massachusetts and attended Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. He began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers, before forming his own company in 1981 spending the next twenty years as its chairman and CEO, according to Wikipedia. “He is the co-founder, CEO, and majority owner of Bloomberg L.P., a global financial services, software and mass media company that bears his name, and is known for its Bloomberg Terminal, a computer software system providing financial data widely used in the global financial services industry. As of November 2019, this made him the 9th richest person in the United States and the 14th richest person in the world; his net worth was estimated at $58 billion. NYC’s Fairway Stores File for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy; 2nd Time in 4 Years

By: Vincent Moriarty

Fairway Market has reportedly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in under four years.

Published reports also maintain that the company’s executives intend to sell as many as five of its retail locations, with more among the remaining nine stores to come.

In its Thursday court filing, Manhattan-based Fairway Group Holdings Corp. “said it has entered into a so-called “stalking horse” agreement to sell up to five of its New York City stores and a distribution center to Village Super Market Inc. for about $70 million,” reported newsday.com. “A stalking horse agreement represents an opening bid; other entities may offer higher prices for the assets.”

For its part, the company has said that stalking horse asset purchase agreement with Village Super Market, Inc. (EA) to sell up to 5 New York City Fairway stores also includes its Distribution Center, all for approximately $70 million.

In addition, the company will execute a Court supervised sale process to continue to negotiate for the sale of its remaining store locations, it said in a press release.

“An Ad Hoc Group of the Company’s senior lenders are supportive of the sale process and have agreed to provide the Company with up to $25 million in debtor in possession financing,” the release said. “Fairway Market will continue to conduct business and serve customers at its stores across the tri-state area and expects no interruption in service during the Court-supervised process. Fairway Market stores will continue to offer a complete range of high quality, specialty food products, and all existing customer promotional and loyalty programs will stay in place during this process.”

“We would like to extend gratitude to our employees, vendors, distributors and customers for their support, dedication and loyalty over the years. It has always been Fairway’s priority to ensure our patrons are provided with the most optimal grocery experience, with the freshest foods and best quality products, and our employees feel appreciated,” said Abel Porter, Chief Executive Officer at Fairway Market, in the statement posted on its web site. “After careful consideration of all alternatives, we have concluded that a Court-supervised sale process is the best way to meet our objectives of preserving as many jobs as possible, maximizing value for our stakeholders, and positioning Fairway for long term success under new ownership.”

Village Super Market, Inc. operates a chain of supermarkets and specialty markets in the Northeast under the ShopRite and Gourmet Garage banners. “Perry and Nick Sumas opened the first Village Market in 1937, and our family continues to believe deeply in the importance of neighborhood grocery stores. We appreciate that Fairway’s loyal customers are concerned about the future, and if we are successful in our bid, we are committed to keeping Fairway, including its name, unique product selection and value, a part of this community,” said Robert Sumas, CEO of Village Super Market, Inc.

Fairway Market has been known as a “unique food retailer offering customers a differentiated one-stop shopping experience as “The Place To Go Fooding,” the company said. “Fairway has established itself as a leading food retail destination in the Greater New York City metropolitan area, recently expanding with the opening of The Cooking Place in June 2019, a cooking school that brings the same passion and philosophy about fooding to its customers. Fairway Market offers an extensive selection of fresh, natural and organic products, prepared foods and hard-to-find specialty and gourmet offerings, along with a full assortment of conventional groceries.”
