Officials: 2 dead in Texas as subfreezing cold sweeps US

(AP) — A sprawling blast of winter weather across the U.S. is likely to blame for the deaths of two people in Texas, where an unusually snowy emergency Monday knocked out power for more than four million people, shut down grocery stores and air travel and closed schools ahead of frigid days still to come.

As nightfall threatened to plummet temperatures again into single digits, officials warned that homes still without power would likely not have heat until at least Tuesday, as frustration mounted and the state’s electric grid came under growing demand and criticism.

“Things will likely get worse before they get better,” said Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, the top elected official in the county of nearly 5 million people around Houston.

Law enforcement reported two men were found dead along Houston-area roadways. Causes of death were pending, but officials said the subfreezing temperatures were likely to blame.

The toll of the worsening conditions included the delivery of new COVID-19 vaccine shipments, which were expected to be delayed until at least midweek. Massive power outages across Houston included a facility storing 8,000 doses of Moderna vaccine, leaving health officials scrambling to find takers at the same time authorities were pleading for people to stay home.

Temperatures nosedived into the single-digits as far south as San Antonio, and homes that had already been without electricity for hours had no certainty about when the lights and heat would come back on, as the state’s overwhelmed power grid began imposing blackouts that are typically only seen in 100-degree Fahrenheit (38-degree Celsius) summers.

The storm was part of a massive system that brought snow, sleet and freezing rain to the southern Plains and was spreading across the Ohio Valley and to the Northeast. The Southwest Power Pool, a group of utilities across 14 states, called for rolling outages because the supply of reserve energy had been exhausted. Some utilities said they were starting blackouts, while others urged customers to reduce power usage.

“We’re living through a really historic event going on right now,” said Jason Furtado, a professor of meteorology at the University of Oklahoma, pointing to all of Texas under a winter storm warning and the extent of the freezing temperatures.

State officials said surging demand, driven by people trying to keep their homes warm, and cold weather knocking some power stations offline had pushed Texas’ system beyond the limits.

“This weather event, it’s really unprecedented. We all living here know that,” said Dan Woodfin, senior director of system operations at the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. He defended preparations made by grid operators and described the demand on the system as record-setting.

“This event was well beyond the design parameters for a typical, or even an extreme, Texas winter that you would normally plan for. And so that is really the result that we’re seeing,” Woodfin said.

More than 500 people were hunkering down at one shelter in Houston, but Mayor Sylvester Turner said other warming centers had to be shut down because those locations, too, lost power.

The largest grocery store chain in Texas, H-E-B, closed locations around Austin and San Antonio, cities that are unaccustomed to snow and have few resources to clear roads. The slow thaw and more frigid lows ahead was also taking a toll on Texas’ distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.

State health officials said Texas, which was due to receive more than 400,000 additional vaccine doses this week, now does not expect deliveries to occur until at least Wednesday.

The weather also put existing vaccine supply in jeopardy. Rice University on Monday abruptly began offering vaccines on its closed Houston campus after Harris Health System told the school it had about 1,000 vaccines that “were going to go to waste,” said Doug Miller, a university spokesman.

“The window was just a couple hours. They have to take care of it quickly,” Miller said.

Harris County officials said a facility storing the vaccines had lost power Monday and that a backup generator also failed. Hidalgo said she did not believe any vaccines were lost.

Caught without enough groceries on hand, Lauren Schneider, a 24-year-old lab technician, walked to a Dallas grocery store near her home Monday morning dressed in a coat, hat and face mask. Schneider said she didn’t feel comfortable driving with the roads covered in snow and ice. She said she hadn’t seen a serious snowfall in Dallas since her childhood.

“I really didn’t think it’s would be this serious,” Schneider said.

Teresa and Luke Fassetta, trundling through the snow carrying grocery bags, said the store lost power while they were shopping. The couple said they lost power overnight, then got it back around 9 a.m., and they were hoping it would still be on when they arrived home. If not, Teresa said, “we just have a bunch of blankets and candles and two cats to keep us warm.”

Several cities in the U.S. saw record lows as Arctic air remained over the central part of the country. In Minnesota, the Hibbing/Chisholm weather station registered minus 38 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 39 degrees Celsius), while Sioux Falls, South Dakota, dropped to minus 26 Fahrenheit (minus 26 degrees Celsius).

In Kansas, where wind chills dropped to as low as minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 34 degrees Celsius) in some areas, Gov. Laura Kelly declared a state of disaster.

Most government offices and schools were closed for Presidents Day, and authorities pleaded with residents to stay home. Louisiana State Police reported that it had investigated nearly 75 weather-related crashes caused by a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain in the past 24 hours.

“We already have some accidents on our roadways,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said during a morning news conference. “It is slick and it is dangerous.”

Air travel was also affected. By midmorning, 3,000 flights had been canceled across the country, about 1,600 of them at Dallas/Fort Worth International and Bush Intercontinental airports in Texas. At DFW, the temperature was 4 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 degrees Celsius) — 3 degrees (-16 degrees) colder than Moscow.

In Houston, officials said Bush Intercontinental Airport runways would remain closed until at least 1 p.m. Tuesday, a day longer than previously expected.

The storm arrived over a three-day holiday weekend that has seen the most U.S. air travel since the period around New Year’s. More than 1 million people went through airport security checkpoints on Thursday and Friday. However, that was still less than half the traffic of a year ago, before the pandemic hit with full force.

The southern Plains had been gearing up for the winter weather for the better part of the weekend. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for all of the state’s 254 counties. Abbott, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson each activated National Guard units to assist state agencies with tasks including rescuing stranded drivers.

President Joe Biden also declared an emergency in Texas in a statement Sunday night. The declaration is intended to add federal aid to state and local response efforts.

Port Authority Votes to Develop Residential Tower at WTC Site

By Hellen Zaboulani

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which owns the land at the World Trade Center, voted to pursue development of a residential tower at the WTC site.

As reported by Crain’s NY, the bi-state Authority has entered exclusive negotiations with Brookfield and Silverstein Properties to develop a 920-foot residential tower, which would be the fifth building constructed on the site.

The project would have 1,325 apartments, including 330 units put aside for households with average incomes lower than 50 percent of area median income, which is now $51,200, as per Port Authority officials.  That would make it the building with the most affordable housing units in Lower Manhattan. Construction on the tower is slated to begin in 2023.

The Tower 5 site was formerly home to the Deutsche Bank building, which also received significantly damaged from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Formerly a 39-story office skyscraper, the structure was closed after the attacks, due to contamination that spread from the collapse of the South Tower. The roughly 33,000 square foot lot is situated directly to the south of Liberty Park.

The news comes despite the fact that Manhattan’s downtown has felt the full impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, with buildings lying vacant.  Office rents have dropped in the city as employees continue to work from home, and companies reassess how much space they require. Conde Nast, the global mass media company who is the anchor tenant at One World Trade Center, is trying to terminate or renegotiate its lease for over 1.2 million square feet of space, and is said to be delinquent in paying $2.4 million of rent.  Further, Larry Silverstein, the developer who rebuilt the bulk of Lower Manhattan after the terrorist attacks, has not yet completed his final skyscraper at 2 World Trade Center.

Additionally, tourists have been non-existent, leaving retailers and hotels devastated. Prices for apartment rents have also dropped in Manhattan, with residents bolting to less crowded locations with more outdoor space.  The plans for a new tower reflect hope that New York City will be able to bounce back from the pandemic.  “The private sector is looking past the immediate the impact of Covid on to recovery,” said Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority, following the announcement.

“This announcement is a giant vote of confidence for Lower Manhattan,” said Mr. Silverstein, in a news release.

Israel and Cyprus Discuss Energy, Tourism Amid COVID-19

A Cypriot delegation led by President Nicos Anastasiades arrived in Israel on Sunday to discuss the European energy market, the shared gas project, and tourism amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi met with his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides.

Israeli Minister of Energy Yuval Steinitz met with Cypriot Minister of Energy Natasa Pilides and discussed the EastMed gas pipeline, the connection of the electricity system between the countries, and the attempt to reach an agreement on the Aphrodite and Yishai gas reservoirs.

The EastMed pipeline, the longest underwater pipeline in the world, will connect the Israeli and Cypriot gas fields through Greece to Europe. It is estimated that the project will provide 10% of Europe’s natural gas.

The two countries agreed to recognize each other’s Green Passport given to citizens who have been vaccinated for COVID-19 and which enables them access to culture and tourism. This agreement will enable tourism between the two countries.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Anastasiades in Jerusalem, during which he highlighted the two working “tirelessly and effectively to build a very special partnership between Cyprus and Israel. And through our common efforts, I think we have ensured that our relationship is constantly growing stronger all the time.”

Israel and Cyprus cooperate in energy, water, tourism, technology, healthcare, public security, and emergency services.

He noted that the Abraham Accords with four Arab countries have “opens up options for new regional cooperation that can involve Cyprus as well.”

“We already see this through the involvement of Arab countries in the East-Med Gas Forum. They’re coming to our gas cooperation, and that’s a sign of the future. I think this is only just the beginning,” Netanyahu stated.

Some 35 trillion cubic feet of gas have been found in Israeli waters, worth some $500 billion.

These crucial discoveries are enabling Israel to become energy independent and have also turned Israel into a major player in the international energy-exporting market.

The Israeli government is expected to earn NIS 17 billion in royalties from the gas discoveries. Additionally, the windfall profits levy is expected to reach up to 10 billion a year by 2040. (TPS)

Comedian Robyn Schall set out to spread a bit of sunshine and love in the Big Apple.

On Thursday night, Schall frequented an Upper West Side bar, where she splashed around $13,000 in tips to the staff.  As reported by the NY Post, Schall live-streamed her outdoor meal at Lilly’s Cocktail and Wine, asking her 142,000 followers to donate an early Valentine’s gift to the bar’s staff, who have been struggling to earn a living, along with most restaurants and bars due to COVID-19 dining restrictions.

When the waitress, Ulyana Hrushchak, came to the table with the bill, Schall had a surprise for her.  “My name’s Robyn, I’m a comedian,” Schall said.  “This morning I said to them [my followers] that we should do something good, and everyone around the world donated money, and we want to give you $7,000!”  “Oh my Gd are you joking?” replied Hrushchak, elated.  “I still feel like it wasn’t real,” she said in a phone interview on Friday. “It’s one of these pinch-me moments.”  Hrushchak, 24, told Bloomberg that the tip was two times her typical monthly earnings when times are good.  She added that she plans to send some of the cash back home to Ireland, use some to pay her rent and bills, and even spend some to take a small vacation.

Aside from the gift for the waitress, Schall also had another $6000 from the contributions, which she gifted to Tracy, the bartender, and cooks Victor and Andres, giving them each checks for $2,000 as the livestream continued.  She also paid for the couple sitting in a table nearby, and gave the remaining $100 raised to staff at a nearby pizza shop.

On Saturday, in a post Schall thanked her followers and praised their generosity.  “I am grateful to be the one that handed over the checks but the credit must go to the thousands of people who donated without knowing where or who we would give it to. You guys are the best and I’m so thankful you follow me and trusted me with this!!!!! I may give you guys some laughs but YOU give me faith in people! I love you! Thanks for being freakin awesome!”

Schall, who has been named one of CBS.com’s “Top 5 standout comics in NY”, is an international standup comedian and an Instagram star.  Fans frequent her Instagram page for her 30 distinct and wacky characters that she performs online in her daily sketch videos.

The Lincoln Project, Criminals in Politics

0

What is this dark cloud of a curse that has befallen so many “Trump Haters” now that he’s been removed from the White House? And this political fickle finger of shame has engulfed both Democrats and Republicans. Governor Cuomo (D), may soon face a jury of his underlings for the deaths of thousands. California’s top honcho, Governor Gavin Newsom (D), is on the brink of a citizen recall for his disgraceful ineptitude. That same state’s Congressman Eric Swalwell (D), has been outed for sleeping with a (female) Chinese spy and now a large bunch of heavy hitting, right-wing Never Trumpers, the biggees of the Lincoln Project (R) are being outed as common crooks and chronic pedophiles. What more good political news can we look for in the immediate future?

Focusing on the Republican Trump hating group, the Lincoln Project (LP) that spent its energies and public donations campaigning for Biden and mosquito-biting Trump, they have been ravaged by revelations that their leaders were outright pedophiles and that they stole millions from their supporters for their own personal needs. John Weaver, one of the group’s co-founders was recently denounced by them for sexually harassing young men who were looking to break into politics. In a statement sent out by the LP, they called Weaver, “a predator, a liar, and an abuser,” following reports that he repeatedly sent unsolicited and sexually charged messages online to young men. Reports now made public, of course, after the election, indicate his perversity was well known to all in the group. Weaver was a major strategist for other No Trumpers, such as John McCain and John Kasich. The group pounced on and tossed him into the Dumpster after he had accomplished his work to get Biden elected.

And just this past week, veteran Trump hating Republican strategist, Steve Schmidt, announced that he was resigning from the board of the Lincoln Project. He claimed he’s still suffering from a childhood incident where he was touched by a Boy Scout medic, that he was depressed and that he wanted a woman to replace him as a board member. We can’t stem the flood of tears rolling down our cheeks. This same guy who ruled this organization while it raked in $40 million in the third quarter of 2020 alone, funneling half of that bundle into their own personal firms and spent a sky-high $13 million in donor money on questionable “operating expenditures,” is now bailing out with a super parachute of bucks.

Strange that the above bunch of political losers of both stripes, crooks and perverts all, worked in conjunction to incriminate, prosecute, persecute, demean and destroy Donald Trump with baseless charges, fabricated rumors and outright lies. Now that their job of getting Biden into the White House by hook or crook is over, they are being led into oblivion and some, surely to prison, leaving vacancies for other Progressive, Socialist radicals to fill the void for the next campaign against true America lovers. Be ready for them to  start swarming this Spring.

JEMB Realty Files Suit Against 11 Tenants at Herald Towers for Back Rent

By:  Ellen Cans

The owner of Herald Towers, a luxury rental building, is suing tenants for delayed back rent, as evident by multiple lawsuits filed this week in Manhattan state Supreme Court. The lawsuits, which come despite laws protecting tenants, are being filed using a loophole in tenant protection laws.

As reported by Crain’s NY, on Wednesday and Thursday, developer JEMB Realty, which owns the 690-unit building, filed suit against 11 tenants who owe a total of roughly $324,000 in back rent.   Suits were originally filed against the tenants back in 2020 through the housing courts, but those cases are still suspended due to the pandemic, according to court documents.  New York City landlords are currently not allowed to evict or harass tenants who are delinquent in rental payments due to the pandemic, but they are still permitted to ask for their money. If there are no threats made, it is permitted for landlords to ask for payment, either directly or via a formal lawsuit.

“JEMB Realty has worked hand-in-hand with our residents at Herald Towers, and tenants across our portfolio, who have been badly impacted by the pandemic,” said a JEMB spokesman.  “Unfortunately, while the majority of our residents are working in good faith together with us, there are some tenants at Herald Towers who are taking advantage of a difficult moment for many. They have stopped paying rent and repeatedly refused our attempts to work together for a solution. We are working within our legal rights to collect the rent owed to us,” he said.

In New York, eviction and foreclosure proceedings are suspended until Feb. 26, or until at least May 1 if tenants can show financial difficulty or health risks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The city’s residential landlords claim that they too have being struggling—with nonpaying tenants, record high vacancies, concessions and price declines– while still being expected to pay their property taxes and mortgages.

The 25-story, rental building located in 34th Street off 6th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, once housed the largest, most luxurious hotel in New York City– the Hotel McAlpin. In 1980, the building was converted into apartments, and in 1999 the property was purchased and upgraded by JEMB, which renamed it Herald Towers.  Currently, asking rents for these units range from $2,000 for a studio to $2,700 for a one-bedroom apartment, as per listings on StreetEasy.

NY Dem Rep. Delgado Joins Call for Probe of Cuomo Nursing Home Cover-Up

0

By Ilana Siyance

On Sunday, Democratic NY Representative Antonio Delgado joined the growing calls to probe the shocking admission by a top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo that the administration hid data on coronavirus deaths in nursing homes.

Last week, during a meeting with Democratic lawmakers, secretary to the governor Melissa DeRosa, made the admission that the state knowingly withheld the accurate number of nursing home deaths out of fear that it was “going to be used against us” by federal prosecutors. As per the NY Post, which reviewed an audio recording of Wednesday’s closed-door meeting, DeRosa told the lawmakers: “And basically, we froze”.  “Because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation,” DeRosa added.

Since the news broke, bipartisan lawmakers have been calling for a probe of the administration’s already infamous nursing home debacle.  “This bombshell admission of a coverup and the remarks by the Secretary to the Governor indicating intent to obstruct any federal investigation is a stunning and criminal abuse of power,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) wrote in a statement.

“This is clearly a gross obstruction of justice,” said NY Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt (R-Niagara).  “Instead of apologizing or providing answers to the thousands of New York families who lost loved ones, the Governor’s administration made apologies to politicians behind closed doors for the ‘political inconvenience,’ this scandal has caused them.”

Delgado, the 44-year old Democratic Rep. for the 19th congressional district, which includes Hudson Valley and Catskills regions, joined the chorus.  “Politics should never come before people’s lives,” Delgado tweeted. “The Secretary to the Governor’s remarks are beyond troubling and warrant a full investigation.”

“Thousands of New Yorkers lost family in nursing homes to COVID-19, a pain made worse by the inability to comfort their loved ones in their final hours,” said Delgado in another tweet. “They deserve answers and accountability.”

Recently, the Cuomo administration finally released updated figures of NY nursing home deaths, including hospital transfers, which were some 50 percent higher than the original numbers disclosed.   The administration has also been criticized for its March 25th executive order forcing nursing homes to accept Covid-19 hospital patients, putting the susceptible residents at risk.

Gov. Cuomo has not commented, and has not yet held a press conference after DeRosa’s admission was exposed.

Amazon Sues NY AG Letitia James to Block Legal Action on Their Handling of COVID

0

By Hadassa Kalatizadeh

Amazon is suing Attorney General Letitia James in a bid to block New York State’s threats to take legal action against the ecommerce giant for its handling of the pandemic in its city warehouses.

When Covid-19 first struck in March, the shutdown led consumers to turn to the online retailer more than ever before.  Soon, however, the company was being criticized for its response to the pandemic.  Employee Christian Smalls initiated protests complaining about conditions at the company’s Staten Island warehouse, and was fired.  In April, the NY attorney general’s office and city inspectors vowed to probe the company’s handlings and whether it met state whistle-blower requirements.

In the preemptive complaint filed on Friday, Amazon claims it acted correctly, and did ensure the safety of its employees and passed city inspections.  It also maintains that James overstepped her authority. James is “demanding relief that is not appropriate or warranted and is threatening to publicly sue if Amazon does not submit to the [attorney general’s] unreasonable terms,” according to the lawsuit. “The threats and unwarranted demands are not tethered to the facts or the law, and thus Amazon must now seek relief in this court.”

As reported by Crain’s NY, the AG’s office sent Amazon a list of changes it would need to implement in order to avoid legal action, as per the complaint. The list of requirements includes: Amazon’s surrender of profits, subsidize bus service for employees and lower performance expectations for warehouse workers.  Amazon further claims it already adopted safety measures including hiring experts, adding hand-sanitizer stations and putting up signs instructing workers to stay at least 6-feet apart from one other.

Amazon’s suit, filed in federal court in Brooklyn, also claims that Smalls was fired for breaking the company’s paid quarantine. Smalls called the claim “ridiculous”.  In November, he filed a class-action lawsuit against Amazon, alleging the company violated federal civil rights law by firing him and for putting employee lives in danger during the novel Coronavirus outbreak.

On Friday, James responded to Amazon’s suit saying that her office is continuing to review all legal options.  “This action by Amazon is nothing more than a sad attempt to distract from the facts and shirk accountability for its failures to protect hardworking employees from a deadly virus,’ James said in a statement. “Let me be clear: We will not be intimidated by anyone, especially corporate bullies that put profits over the health and safety of working people.”

Principal of NY School Demands Parents Become “White Traitors”- Sends Parents “Anti-Whiteness” Manifesto

0

(TJVNEWS.COM) The principal of East Side Community School in New York sent white parents a manifesto that calls on them to become “white traitors” and advocate for full “white abolition.”

“This is the new language of public education,” tweeted Christopher F. Rufo along with an image showing “the 8 white identities,” which range from “white supremacist” to “white abolition.”

The two final stages, “white traitor” and “white abolitionist,” demands that white people “subvert white authority,” “dismantle institutions,” dismantle whiteness and not allow whiteness to reassert itself.

The prominent liberal journalist, Glenn Greenwald.  pointed out the latest in “woke” insanity on Twitter, making millions aware of this bizarre manifesto. Essentially this latest form of indoctrination is pushing self-hatred, which psychologists would agree is not good for mental health especially among children.

Here is the actual manifesto

Minneapolis City Council to spend $6.4M to recruit more police officers, After Supporting “Defund Police” Agenda

(AP) — Minneapolis is planning to spend $6.4 million to hire dozens of police officers, at a time when some City Council members and activist groups have been advocating to replace the police department following George Floyd’s death.

The City Council voted unanimously Friday to approve the additional funding that police requested. The department says it only has 638 officers available to work — roughly 200 fewer than usual. An unprecedented number of officers quit or went on extended medical leave after Floyd’s death and the unrest that followed, which included the burning of a police precinct.

With new recruit classes, the city anticipates it will have 674 officers available at the end of the year, with another 28 in the hiring process, the Star Tribune reported.

Floyd, a Black man who was handcuffed, died May 25 after former police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck even as he said he couldn’t breathe. Floyd’s death sparked protests and led to a nationwide reckoning on race. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter and is scheduled for trial March 8. Three other former officers are charged with aiding and abetting, and are scheduled for trial in August.

While there have been calls to dismantle the department after Floyd’s death, some residents have begged the city to hire more officers, citing longer response times and an increase in violent crime.

Editors note: A.P does not stress the tremendous increase in violent crimes in the city, carjackings have skyrocketed since the radical left has pushed the anti-police agenda following Floyd’s death

Days before the City Council vote, Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Medaria Arradondo promised to update the application process for police recruits to include questions about whether they have lived in Minneapolis, have degrees in criminology, social work, psychology or counseling, and whether they volunteer or participate in programs such as the Police Activities League.

Deputy Police Chief Amelia Huffman said they hope the change “will help us to really feel confident that we are recruiting the kinds of candidates we want right from the beginning.”

Meanwhile, three City Council members have proposed replacing the police department with a public safety department that would include law enforcement and other services. Yes 4 Minneapolis, a coalition of local community groups, is also collecting signatures to try to get a similar proposal on the November ballot.

The Star Tribune reported the Yes 4 Minneapolis committee is being fueled by a half-million dollar grant from the Washington, D.C.-based group Open Society Policy Center, which is associated with billionaire George Soros. Organizers hope to collect 20,000 signatures by March 31.

“We have a policing system that doesn’t work for us and we need alternatives,” said Rachel Bean, who signed the petition Saturday. “I’m a social worker and I feel like we have lots of tools that we could try to create more community safety.”

The petition would remove police department language from the city’s charter and create a public health-focused Department of Public Safety, “including licensed peace officers if necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the department.”

DeSantis: Biden Cannot Square Wanting Open Borders for Illegal Aliens, Travel Restrictions for Americans

0
AP

JOHN BINDER

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) says President Joe Biden “cannot square” opening the United States-Mexico border to thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens while also potentially restricting travel for American citizens.

Reports this month have circulated that the Biden administration is leaving the door open to restricting domestic travel from state-to-state for Americans — specifically travel to and from Florida. Simultaneously, Biden has dismantled a legal wall at the southern border that has surged illegal immigration.

Biden’s end to the Remain in Mexico policy, as well as a series of cooperative asylum agreements with Central America, is ensuring that tens of thousands of border crossers will be released into the U.S. interior, many of whom will take American jobs while more than 17 million citizens are jobless. There is no requirement for these border crossers to undergo coronavirus testing before their release.

In an interview with Fox News, DeSantis called Biden’s policies “all political” when it comes to the Chinese coronavirus.

“Of course [illegal aliens] not being screened for COVID at the southern border because this is all political,” DeSantis said:

So [Biden’s] opening the border. He’s letting illegals pour in. They’re not doing any COVID tests; they’re just coming into the communities. We have no idea what type of COVID or other things they may be carrying, but yet he wants to potentially make you take a test if you just get on an airplane and fly from one American city to the next. Or he wants to prevent travel to the state of Florida. [Emphasis added]
This stinks to high heaven. It is a huge contradiction, and you can’t square wanting open borders for illegal aliens but then also restricting U.S. citizens from traveling around the country as they see fit, and I think the American people see the hypocrisy in that. [Emphasis added]

Last week, Breitbart News’s Charlie Spiering asked White House press secretary Jen Psaki if the administration was considering travel restrictions on Florida. Psaki denied reports that such policies are being considered.

“We are always considering what steps are necessary to keep the American people safe,” Psaki said. “But we are not currently in the process of — no decisions have been made around additional public health measures that would delay or would change domestic travel considerations.”

For international travelers, the Biden administration requires that all those arriving in the U.S. via plane test negative for the coronavirus. No such policy exists for foreign nationals arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Earlier this month, Yuma County, Arizona, Sheriff Leon Wilmot sent a letter to Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) in which he called the policy “a particularly dangerous approach.”

“There is currently no protocol for testing any of these people for the COVID-19 virus nor is there any support being offered by the federal government to house, feed, medically treat or transport these immigrants,” Wilmot wrote in the letter to Sinema.

The latest Catch and Release totals, where border crossers are apprehended and then released into the U.S. interior, reveal that in the first ten days of the month, at least 2,000 were freed into the country. These border crossers are either given a notice to appear in court or are paroled, in which case they can apply for work permits to take American jobs.

Dem NY Assemblyman Kim: Cuomo Is ‘Lying Right Now’ – We Need Investigation by State, Feds, or Commission

IAN HANCHETT On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “The Story,” New York State Assemblyman Ron Kim (D) stated that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is lying about notifying the state legislature about the Department of Justice’s investigation into New York’s nursing homes, and stated that there needs to be an investigation into the nursing homes by either an independent commission, the state’s attorney general, or the federal government “as soon as possible.”

Kim said, [relevant remarks begin around 5:30] “It took us almost two months before the governor decided to change. In fact, a month later, at a press conference, he said he didn’t know about it. He lied. Just like he’s lying right now to today’s press conference about sending notices to the Assembly and Senate that we knew about the Department of Justice investigation. We were not informed, we were not told there was an investigation in August.”

He later added, “If there’s nothing to hide, why didn’t they just hand over the information when we asked for it? The information was available. They could have just disclosed it. But they chose not to. … I do believe we need a thorough investigation, whether that be [an] independent commission or the attorney general or the federal government. And that needs to happen as soon as possible.”

Andrew Cuomo (D) on Monday addressed the mounting criticisms over his administration’s handling of the Chinese coronavirus — particularly the fallout from his state’s controversial March 25 directive and the recent revelation that his administration hid the true fatality figures out of fear of a federal investigation — telling reporters that the illness “did not get into the nursing homes by people coming from hospitals.”

Cuomo addressed what he described as the “distortion” over his March 25 directive, which directed nursing homes to accept recovering coronavirus patients, asserting that the virus did not enter nursing homes through the department’s controversial guidance.

In mid-March, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidance on sending people from the hospital back to nursing homes. The New York Department of Health (DOH) followed the guidance, as did “at least” 12 other states, Cuomo said, citing the reasons for the directive. Residents leaving hospitals were “not likely to be contagious because at that time the viral load is so low that you’re not contagious,” he said, also citing the use of cohorts.

“Patients, particularly seniors, should not remain in hospitals longer than necessary, because of risk of secondary infection,” he said, continuing to defend the directive.

“The patients were not sent to nursing homes. The nursing home had to agree that they could care for this person. That is a matter of law. They cannot accept a patient where they are not prepared to care for properly,” Cuomo claimed.

Notably, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), who delivered supplies to nursing homes at the time, told Breitbart News Saturday that the facilities lacked basic personal protective equipment to care for the individuals and felt as though they “didn’t have that opportunity to reject” the recovering patients.

Cuomo continued to defend the guidance during the presser. Of the 613 nursing homes in the state, 365 received a person from the hospital, Cuomo said. Of the 365 that received a person from the March 25 guidance, “98 percent of those … already had COVID in their facility.”

“COVID did not get into the nursing homes by people coming from hospitals,” the Democrat governor asserted, placing the bulk of the blame on unknowing staff members.

“COVID came into the nursing homes by staff walking into the nursing home when we didn’t even know we had COVID — staff walking into a nursing home even though they were asymptomatic because the national experts all told us you could only spread COVID if you had symptoms,” he continued, also placing blame on visitors, thereby absolving his administration of blame.

“COVID may have been brought into a nursing home because visitors brought it in and didn’t know they were contagious because the guidance was you can only be contagious if you have symptoms —if you’re sneezing, if you’re coughing,” Cuomo said. “That turned out to be wrong.”

“That’s how COVID got into the nursing homes,” he concluded. “98 percent of the people who took a person back from a hospital who was probably no longer contagious already had it in the facility, and they signed and agreed that they could handle it because they already had people who had COVID in the nursing home.”

“If you look at the rate of death before the March 25 order, and after the order was rescinded, the rate of death is the same,” he continued, asserting that experts made decisions based on the best information they had at the time.

Cuomo also responded to the mounting backlash over his administration covering up the number of coronavirus fatalities in long-term care facilities, contending that the New York DOH has “always fully and publicly reported all COVID deaths in nursing homes and hospitals.”

“They have always been fully reported,” he said, defending his state’s handling of that population in relation to the virus.

“New York is 34 in nursing home deaths as a percentage of total death,” he said, adding that it is “one of only seven states that counts what’s called presumed fatalities in nursing homes.”

“COVID preys on senior citizens, older people, weaker people. We’ve always known that. That is a fact,” he continued.

“The numbers were the numbers, always,” he continued, telling reporters that the number of deaths in nursing homes and hospitals was “fully, publicly, and accurately reported,” although he admitted that people requested additional information from the DOH beyond “place of death.” Requests included additional numbers for certain categorizations.

“There was a delay in providing the press and the public all that additional information,” he said. “There was a delay.”

Biden Pulls 65 Pending Trump Executive Orders

President Joe Biden has pulled 65 pending Trump administration executive orders, many of which deal with key national security and immigration matters.

Several of the withdrawals strike down orders that would protect American jobs by tightening immigration restrictions and eliminate proposed oversight regulations on how China-backed Confucius Institutes operate on campus. The Biden administration selectively cut the orders, as some pending Trump administration actions remain under review.

Biden withdrew one Department of Homeland Security regulation that would bar foreign nationals with deportation orders from working. Under current law, outgoing aliens released from custody can still seek legal employment. The proposed—and now withdrawn—Trump executive order would increase protections for American workers by striking down such an expansive employment policy.

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R., Texas) blasted Biden’s rollback on Trump-era regulations as “disheartening” and “disingenuous.”

“President Biden’s approach to immigration is both disheartening and predictable given the hypocrisy of the left. In less than one month, the Biden administration has steamrolled commonsense immigration policies simply because they were tied to President Trump,” Jackson said. “Clearly, Democrats are not serious about working across the aisle. Disingenuous attempts to legislate in a bipartisan manner are bad for effective policymaking and, in turn, for the American people.”

Robert Law, the director of regulatory affairs and policy at the Center for Immigration Studies, said the withdrawal signals radicalism in Biden’s coming immigration agenda and that such reversals harm both the country’s security and economy.

“What is very apparent is that there is nothing moderate about the direction of immigration policy that the Biden administration, through his various political appointees, is pursuing,” Law said. “If there’s any immigration regulation or policy that the Trump administration approved that should be carried on, you would think it would be something like this.”

The Biden administration struck down another proposed immigration order that would have eliminated the ability of certain visa holders to seek employment.

These withdrawals—which came without any congressional consultation—also come as the Biden administration and Democrats upend other legislative actions taken to secure the border. On Thursday, the Biden administration rescinded the national emergency proclamation used by the Trump White House to allot funding to construct the southern border wall.

Rep. Jim Banks (R., Ind.) said that such actions hurt the American economy and give illegal immigrants “privileged treatment.”

“America’s labor market is already tight and thanks to Biden, U.S. citizens now have to compete with a flood of illegal immigrants,” said Banks. “Stimulus checks, vaccines, no threat of deportation—it’s hard to see what Biden’s actual voters get that illegal immigrants don’t, aside from income taxes. The only way this sort of privileged treatment makes sense is if Biden is counting on their help in 2024.”

Biden also reversed an order that would mandate the disclosure of any agreement made between American schools and Confucius Institutes. Operated by Chinese Communist Party-affiliated entities, Confucius Institutes peddle Chinese influence and monitor Chinese students on U.S. campuses. Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo designated the Confucius Institute as a “foreign mission” for the Communist Party last year. Biden’s reversal of the pending order would alleviate pressure and accountability on universities and schools that have signed contracts to welcome the institutes on campus.

Republicans blasted the national security implications of the reversal. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R., Wis.) warned that China sees American universities as a chief battlefront with Beijing, and the country’s influence requires a harder look rather than a rollback in oversight.

“American universities are on the frontline of our competition with the Chinese Communist Party,” Gallagher told the Washington Free Beacon. “At a time when the CCP is seeking more avenues than ever to influence the direction of American China policy, we should be doing everything possible to shine light on its funding arrangements here in the U.S.”

Rep. Joe Wilson (R., S.C.) warned China’s “foreign propaganda” threatens American education, and plans to reintroduce an act aimed at mitigating the Biden reversal’s kowtow to Confucius Institutes.

“American students and families deserve to know the source of their education, especially when the source is a foreign government,” Wilson said.  “Confucius Institutes at universities and subsidiary partnerships with K-12 schools often do not have their contracts or funding amounts publicly disclosed. Reversing this proposed rule allows these foreign propaganda missions to continue operating in the dark and abandons accountability for universities to report on these partnerships.”

Trump Acquitted (Again), But Trump Hatred Continues

Last week’s second impeachment trial of former President Trump should serve as a warning that something is very wrong in US politics. Far from a measured, well-investigated, rock-solid case against the former president, America was again abused with day after day of character assassination, innuendo, false claims, and even falsified “evidence.”

The trial wasn’t intended to win a conviction of Trump for “incitement” because the Democrats already knew that the votes were not there. So, just as with the last impeachment trial, the goal was to fling as much dirt at Donald Trump as they could while the cameras were rolling. Their hatred of Donald Trump is so deep and visceral that probably a psychologist would have been more beneficial to them than yet another impeachment trial.

It would be incorrect to say that the House managers’ case fell apart, because they had no case to begin with. They never had a case because they made no effort to develop a case. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court saw from the beginning that this was no legitimate impeachment trial and informed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer that he would not preside. Without the Chief Justice, there was no Constitutional impeachment trial. So they put on a show trial instead.

As Constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley kept asking, why didn’t the House schedule a single hearing to investigate what really happened up to and on the day of the Capitol melee on January 6th? They had weeks to do so. Professor Turley believes they might even have been able to make a decent case if they had tried.

Why did they not call witnesses? Were there no rioters who could be called to explain under oath how Trump’s speech had inspired them to enter the Capitol building to overturn the election?

Were they afraid that under cross-examination we might have found out more about Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows’ claim that Trump offered to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops in Washington before January 6th but that his offer was rebuked? What about reports that Capitol Hill Police were left without back-up and unprepared for what happened? House and Senate leadership is responsible for security at the Capitol and they obviously failed. Why?

The House and Senate Democrats (and a few Republicans) did not succeed in their ultimate goal: preventing Trump from ever running again for political office. But that doesn’t mean they are giving up. They are not about to give citizen Trump a moment of peace. They are intent on continuing their witch hunt but it looks less and less like any desire for justice. It looks like fear. They are afraid if he is allowed to run again he may be elected. So they cannot allow that vote to happen.

And they accuse Trump of undermining democracy.

There were a number of reasons to impeach and convict President Trump while he was in office. Bombing Syria on bogus grounds without authorization was one of them. But Democrats love war as much as Republicans so they weren’t about to uphold their Constitutional obligations.

Impeachment 2.0 may be over, but those blinded by hatred for Trump are not about to give up. They are irrational and obsessed. They are also dangerous.

A Valentine-style photograph of George Floyd captioned “you take my breath away” was reportedly circulated around the Los Angeles Police Department leading to an internal investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

LAPD Chief Michel Moore said an investigation will begin Monday by interviewing the officer who filed a complaint over the picture, according to the Times. The department is looking into the origins of the image and how it was shared among the officers.

“Our investigation is to determine the accuracy of the allegations while also reinforcing our zero tolerance for anything with racist views,” Moore said, the Times reported.

Moore said that “people will find my wrath” if the investigation finds officers were sharing the image, the Times reported. He added that the department is looking into two Instagram accounts potentially linked to LAPD personnel including one account known as “Blue Line Mafia.”

Floyd died after a former Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes during an arrest in May 2020, video shows. Floyd repeatedly told the officers that he couldn’t breathe.

The LAPD did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
