The situation in the Middle East is growing increasingly tense, and the stakes have never been higher. With Iran’s unchecked nuclear ambitions and its connection to various proxy groups in the region, there is a real and imminent threat that must be addressed. President Biden must take a strong stance and renew a credible military threat against Iran’s nuclear facilities to prevent a disastrous escalation.

Recent developments have underscored the urgency of this matter. President Biden’s stern warning to Iran about its proxies escalating conflict with Israel is a step in the right direction. However, more needs to be done. For years, the Iranian regime has expanded its nuclear program while the international community watched with inadequate response. The misguided approach of unfreezing Iranian assets and allowing oil revenue to flow has only fueled Iran’s dangerous ambitions.

Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile is now substantial, and with further enrichment, it could be used for creating multiple nuclear weapons. The time it would take Iran to reach this point is not reassuring, and the international community’s response time is equally uncertain. The risk of a breakout scenario, where Iran creates a crisis at one of its known enrichment plants, is a real concern, especially with recent actions like the expulsion of key inspectors and past instances of undisclosed enrichment.

The danger is compounded by Iran’s potential to divert enriched uranium to covert facilities. While there’s no concrete evidence of such facilities currently, Iran’s actions have undermined the monitoring of its nuclear assets, making it easier for them to set up secret sites.

The storage of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in small, easily movable containers at the Esfahan Fuel Fabrication Plant is a grave concern. If Iran were to divert these stocks, locating them would be a significant challenge. Once Iran has the material, the path to nuclear device creation and possible testing becomes a frightening possibility.

Israel is already facing threats on multiple fronts, primarily from Hamas, which receives support from Iran. To avoid further drawing Israel into confrontations, the United States must have a contingency plan. If Iran takes steps to create a crisis at its enrichment facilities or relocates nuclear material, military action may become a necessary response to prevent the worst-case scenario.

The Iranian regime’s potential access to nuclear weapons is a global security concern, not just an issue for Israel. The international community, led by the United States, must take a firm stand to prevent a disastrous nuclear escalation. President Biden must reiterate a credible military threat and work diplomatically to persuade Iran to return to compliance with international agreements.

The stakes are too high to ignore, and the time to act is now. The world must unite in its efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and deter the regime from pursuing actions that could lead to catastrophic consequences for the region and the world.
