A tragic episode took place over the weekend, in which a 23-year-old woman leapt to her death from a fourth-floor window of a Manhattan building.

As reported by the New York Post, the incident occurred on Saturday and police found the woman unconscious on the street at 39 Walker Street, shortly after 5 p.m.  She was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.  Police officials have not yet released the identity of the woman, pending her family’s notification.  They said, however, that the woman was visiting New York City, and wasn’t a local.

A source for the Post, said that the woman had stopped by the Bortolami contemporary art gallery, which is on the first and second floor of the five-story building on Walker Street in Tribeca.  The woman then left the gallery and walked up the steps to the building’s fourth floor and flung herself out the window into the backyard, the source said. “She was acting erratic,” the source said. “She ripped the blinds down, opened the window and jumped out.”

Saturday is typically the busiest day for the gallery, which opened in 2005, the source with knowledge of the occurrence said.  “When the gallery is open, they open the doors to the hallway” so people can walk up the steps from first to second floor,” the source said.  Visitors, however, “are not allowed up” on the fourth floor—which is where there are apartments.  A 2-bedroom home at the building is listed for roughly $2.5 million.

“I couldn’t sleep last night because I kept thinking of someone jumping,” the source added. “I’m still in shock right now.”

Of late, there has unfortunately been a significant increase in suicides among young people.  As per the NY Times, a two-year decline in yearly suicides ended in 2021, with suicide rates rising among younger Americans and people of color, as per a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published in February.  A total of 48,183 suicide were reported in the country at the end of 2021, up from 45,979 in 2020.  The number of suicides had peaked in 2018, reaching 48,344. The data revealed that there was a 12.4 percent drop in the suicide rates among older Americans ages 45 to 64.  The troubling part of the data was that more suicides are occurring at progressively younger ages, especially in nonwhite populations.

If you or someone you know are struggling with suicidal thoughts or are experiencing a mental health crisis and live in New York City, you can call 1-888-NYC-WELL for free and confidential crisis counseling. If you live outside the five boroughs, you can find help by calling the 24/7 National Suicide Prevention hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or texting 988, or visiting SuicidePreventionLifeline.org.
