Lenox Hill Hospital has achieved a 5-star rating for vaginal delivery for 2022 from Healthgrades, a leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients. The high rating indicates that Lenox Hill’s clinical outcomes for vaginal delivery are superior to hospitals that have not achieved this distinction. This marks the third consecutive year that Lenox Hill has earned this designation.

Healthgrades analyzed all-payer data for 16 states from 2018 through 2020 and found a significant variation in hospital quality between those that received the 5-star rating and those that have not. During that period, patients undergoing vaginal delivery in hospitals rated 5 stars, on average, had a 45.1% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals rated 1 star.* The complete methodology on how Healthgrades measures hospital quality and access can be found here.

“Patients delivering at Lenox Hill Hospital are in the hands of some of the most skilled and experienced labor and delivery specialists in the country,” said Frank Chervenak, MD, chair or obstetrics and gynecology at Lenox Hill Hospital. “We are very proud to receive this recognition from Healthgrades, as our staff goes above and beyond to create a safe and comfortable environment for our maternity patients.”

Lenox Hill’s obstetrics unit delivers approximately 4,200 babies a year, which is higher than the national average. An analysis on maternity care by U.S. News and World Report found that the hospital never or rarely schedules deliveries earlier than recommended, avoids unnecessary C-sections and has a slightly rarer than average incidence of newborn complications. This is due in part to the facility’s Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine – a center of excellence and one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind in NYC – which offers 24/7 prenatal services and helps co-manage high-risk pregnancies.

The hospital has earned a national reputation for excellent maternal, fetal, obstetrical and gynecological care. According to U.S. News and World Report’s 2022-23 Best Hospitals ratings, Lenox Hill ranked 18th in the U.S. for obstetrics and gynecology. Newsweek also named it among “America’s Best Maternity Hospitals” in 2022 – a designation held by fewer than 6% of all U.S. hospitals. In addition, earlier this year Healthgrades recognized Lenox Hill as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals placing it within the top 1% of hospitals in the nation for clinical care quality and within the top 5% of all U.S. hospitals for patient safety.

To continue delivering exceptional obstetrical care, Lenox Hill Hospital is committed to enhancing and expanding its maternity services. It has recently launched a midwifery program as an option for patients with low-risk pregnancies, offering a holistic, nurturing and personalized approach through pregnancy to labor and delivery to postpartum care. In addition, Lenox Hill plans to revitalize the facility to include a dedicated mother-baby hospital with its own separate entrance. The new space will include all private patient rooms, additional labor and delivery suites and newborn nurseries, and an expanded neonatal intensive care unit.
