Lenox Hill Hospital has received two three-star ratings, highest quality rating given, from the highly distinguished Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). The international organization, which is dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for heart, lung and esophagus surgeries, compares hospitals on a combination of quality measures that include mortality, bleeding, stroke and more. STS has bestowed its highest ranks upon Lenox Hill in recognition of the hospital’s impeccable outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and isolated mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR).

The hospital has received consecutive three-star ratings for CABG outcomes since 2019, which covered hospital performance starting in January 2018, and three-star ratings for MVRR since 2018 which reflects hospital outcomes since January 2015. STS’s latest report places Lenox Hill Hospital among the most elite medical facilities in the United States and Canada when it comes to patient care and outcomes in the field of cardiac surgery.

“I am proud to work alongside surgeons whose tireless work and dedication have earned the department another three-star rating,” said S. Jacob Scheinerman, MD, chairman of the department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. “This recognition is a testament to the work of our entire team of healthcare professionals. These fantastic results exemplify why patients should be confident that, under our surgeons’ care, they will return to their normal lifestyle quickly.”

CABG and MVRR are complicated surgeries that address common but serious conditions. During a CABG, a surgery that addresses a narrowing of the coronary arteries, the surgeon takes a blood vessel from another part of the body – like the leg or chest – and attaches it to the narrowed area, thereby creating a place for blood flow to bypass the blockage.

MVRR aims to correct a defective mitral valve. This portion of the heart facilitates the movement of blood from the left atrium to the left ventricle can sometimes malfunction and either slow the flow of blood or even allow it to regurgitate back into the atrium which can lead to heart failure.

Lenox Hill Hospital has a staff of doctors, nurses and administrators who excel in the field of heart health. This is represented by a bevy of accolades received in addition to these latest STS ratings. Healthgrades has named the hospital one of America’s 100 best hospitals for cardiac care for nine years in a row and one of America’s 100 best hospitals for coronary intervention for 11 years in a row. U.S. News and World Report ranked the facility as the 28th best hospital in the country for cardiology and heart surgery. Additionally, the Department of Health reported the institution has received some of New York’s best survival rates for bypass surgery.

Three of Lenox Hill Hospital’s sister hospitals, which are part of Northwell Health, also received three-star ratings from STS for three-year period, July 2018 to June 2021. The Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital has achieved three-star overall quality ratings in all five cardiac surgical categories analyzed by the STS. South Shore University Hospital received three stars for isolated CABG, and CABG + aortic valve replacement (AVR). Staten Island University Hospital received three stars for isolated CABG and isolated MVRR.
