Disgraced CUNY Prof Accused of Hiring Photographer Husband at $650K in Taxpayers’ Money to Shoot Pics

Hunter College psychology professor and sex and drug researcher Jeffrey Parsons resigned his position after being accused of using cocaine at college events and organizing annual parties that included major amounts of alcohol and sex. He is also alleged to have hired his photographer husband at a fee of more than $600K in taxpayer money to shoot pictures. Photo Credit: hunter.cuny.edu

Jeffrey Parsons, the psychology professor at CUNY’s Hunter College campus on the Upper East Side who resigned last month, is alleged to have hired his photographer husband at a fee of more than $600,000 in taxpayers’ money, to shoot photos.

By Clark Savage, Jr.

The husband, Chris Hietikko, “though not a CUNY employee, also collected big bucks in grant dollars working for Parsons’ Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training, known as CHEST,” according to the New York Post. “Hietikko’s Mindful Designs company was paid an average $82,000 a year — or a total of $656,000 — from 2011 to 2018, according to a CUNY spokesman who said the work was cleared by a conflict of interest panel. He is no longer working for CUNY.”

Hietikko is also reported to have designed recruitment ads for CHEST studies. But, the Post piece continued, “he collected money from CHEST far longer than just eight years. A 2013 federal grant application said he worked “with the center for more than 12 years,” providing “a variety of recruitment and project materials.”

Parsons achieved celebrity status in some quarters for his research on HIV and drug use. According to published reported, he resigned in the wake of reports of misconduct.

The professor exited his position at the beginning of July “after an investigation substantiated claims that the professor used cocaine at school events and hosted university-affiliated, booze-fueled parties where he was accused of sexually harassing other employees,” according to Patch.com. The investigation began after a get-together organized by Parsons at the Stonewall Inn on May 18.

“Dr. Parsons’ conduct was reprehensible. There is no place for it at CUNY. By dealing with what happened decisively and to the fullest extent, the University is sending a clear message that there will be zero tolerance of sexual harassment or sexual misconduct,” CUNY spokesman Frank Sobrino told Patch in a statement.

According to the New York Post, Parsons led CUNY’s Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training while teaching at the university. The Center drew headlines for its research into unsafe sex and drug use. For that, it garnered millions of dollars in grants.

“Each year, Parsons would throw a party for the center’s staff using money from a school expense account, according to the report,” noted Patch.com. “The parties grew increasingly raunchy every year, and Parsons’ behavior at the 2018 event caused employees to bring complaints to university administrators. The professor was accused of forcing employees to drink, telling employees to take off their shirts and lifting an employee’s shirt to expose their chest without their permission, the Post reported.”
“The mission of Hunter College’s PRIDE Health Research Consortium (which stands for Promoting Resilience, Intersectionality, Diversity, and Equity) is to support research to understand the structural, social, and psychological determinants of health disparities for sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities, to investigate the role of gender and sexuality in health, and to design and implement empirically-supported interventions to reduce disparities among these communities in pursuit of health equity,” the colleges notes on its prideresearch.org web site.

Landlord Fighting New NYS Rent Regulations Handed Loss in Court

A landlord trying to dismantle the new rent law through the federal courts system was just handed a procedural loss in New York Supreme Court.

 By Marty Goldblatt

Two tenants in Astoria sued the Mycak family’s company Vermyck LLC last year over accusations of violating the J-51 program by not giving them a rent-stabilized lease when they moved into the building, Real Deal Reported.

The landlords were receiving tax benefits under the J-51 program while at the same time due to former de-regulatory rules, the apartments were no longer rent stabilized.

The class action lawsuit will consist of all tenants who live or lived in apartments that were deregulated while the owners were still receiving J-51 tax benefits on the property, according to court documents.

“This decision sends a clear message that the court will not tolerate any more of this landlord’s nonsense, and we’re pleased that these tenants are one step closer to receiving the relief to which they are rightfully entitled: rent stabilized leases and hundreds of thousands of dollars in rent refunds,” the plaintiffs’ attorney Lucas Ferrara said in a statement.

Richard Walsh, attorney for the Mycaks, responded by saying “does not mean the plaintiffs are correct” and that the court “never addressed our argument that the default formula was also a penalty and the plaintiffs had to waive it to achieve class action status.”

The Mycaks, Katz Realty Group and Constance Nugent-Miller are the three landlords suing New York City and a state agency over the strict new rent laws the state passed in June. They claim it violates the Constitution’s Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, Real Deal reported.

Lawmakers had reached a deal in June on a number of reforms to the current laws, which affect about one million regulated apartments in New York City, and repackaged them into one bill dubbed the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019.

Some of the key elements of the laws include: Rent regulations extended so they won’t expire like they have every four to eight years for decades,  vacancy decontrol, or when a unit is removed from rent-stabilization because the monthly price hits a certain threshold, currently $2,774.76, and it becomes vacant, has been repealed,  and If an owner has given a tenant a unit at a “preferential rent,” a price below the legal regulated rent, he or she will no longer be able to raise the rent to the full legal limit at a lease renewal. AM NY reported in detail on the new laws.

An investigation by the Housing Rights Initiative led to the lawsuit.

“It’s highly ironic that the landlord accused of flouting the old rent laws is now suing to challenge the new ones,” HRI executive director Aaron Carr said in a statement. “This victory couldn’t be more timely”, as was reported by the Real Deal.
The Rent Stabilization Association and the Community Housing Improvement Program are spearheading the suit. RSA president Joe Strasburg previously told The Real Deal he was not bothered that the Mycaks were both a plaintiff in a lawsuit over the new rent laws and a defendant in a lawsuit over the old rent laws.

DOJ Eyeing Online Platforms; Trying to Avoid Corporate Harassment

The United States Department of Justice announced last week that the Department’s Antitrust Division is reviewing whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation, or otherwise harmed consumers.

By: Bettina Clarkson

The Department’s review will consider the widespread concerns that consumers, businesses, and entrepreneurs have expressed about search, social media, and some retail services online, DOJ said. The Department’s Antitrust Division is conferring with and seeking information from the public, including industry participants who have direct insight into competition in online platforms, as well as others.

“Without the discipline of meaningful market-based competition, digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Antitrust Division. “The Department’s antitrust review will explore these important issues.”

The goal of the Department’s review, DOJ pointed out, is to assess the competitive conditions in the online marketplace in an objective and fair-minded manner and to ensure Americans have access to free markets in which companies compete on the merits to provide services that users want. If violations of law are identified, it added, the Department will proceed appropriately to seek redress.

The new antitrust inquiry under Attorney General William Barr “could ratchet up the already considerable regulatory pressures facing the top U.S. tech firms. The review is designed to go above and beyond recent plans for scrutinizing the tech sector that were crafted by the department and the Federal Trade Commission,” according to The Wall Street Journal.

“The two agencies, which share antitrust enforcement authority, in recent months worked out which one of them would take the lead on exploring different issues involving the big four tech giants. Those turf agreements caused a stir in the tech industry and rattled investors. Now, the new Justice Department review could amplify the risk, because some of those companies could face antitrust claims from both the Justice Department and the FTC,” the newspaper added.

The step is the most powerful yet by Attorney General Barr towards Big Tech, which according to CNBC “faces increased scrutiny from both political parties because of the expanded market power the companies have and the tremendous amount of consumer data they control. President Trump, a regular critic of Amazon and CEO Jeff Bezos, has claimed that Facebook is biased against conservatives and recently agreed with an assessment by tech investor Peter Thiel that perhaps Google should be investigated for not working with the U.S. government on a cloud project.”

Trump Doubles Down on Critique of Baltimore & of Cummings

1

By: Steve Herman

President Trump is continuing to engage in what some of his critics are characterizing as race-baiting, focused on the majority African-American city of Baltimore and one of its prominent representatives in Congress, Elijah Cummings, whose powerful committee is trying to obtain communications of White House officials, including the president’s family members.

Baptist minister Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist known as an anti-Trump commentator on cable television, was also targeted by Trump in early Monday tweets.

“He’s [Trump’s] like a child. Somebody says something and he reacts. “He’s thin-skinned and not really matured that well,” said Sharpton in Baltimore. “But he has a particular venom for blacks and people of color. He doesn’t refer to any of his other opponents or critics as ‘infested.’ He does not attack their districts.”

Trump, on Monday afternoon, met with about 20 “inner city pastors,” as he described them on Twitter.

During the two-hour meeting, the president “did more listening than talking,” according to Bill Owens, leader of the Coalition of African-American Pastors.

Asked by a reporter if he considers Trump a racist, Owens replied, “I find that hard to believe.”

Evangelist Alveda King, a niece of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Martin Luther King Jr., said following the meeting that “we have a president who is listening, and I’m glad to pray with him today.”

The participants said the meeting had been scheduled before Trump launched his attacks on Cummings and his Maryland congressional district.

Such attacks, according to the Axios political newsletter, quoting those close to Trump, is central to the president’s re-election strategy.

“Trump’s associates predict more, not less, of the race-baiting madness,” according to an Axiosarticle written earlier this month.

Trump has also tried to appeal to black voters since he began his successful 2016 run for president, arguing they should abandon the Democratic Party because decades of leadership in the inner cities has done nothing to improve their plight.

Trump, on Twitter, has called Cummings, who is black and now in his 13th term in the House of Representatives, a “brutal bully,” claiming his congressional district “is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”

The critical series of tweets began Saturday and continued through Monday, with Trump referring to Maryland’s largest city as the having the worst crime statistics in the nation, blaming Cummings’ “leadership.”

While Baltimore has a high crime rate, several other cities — including St. Louis, Detroit and Memphis — are ranked more dangerous, according to recent crime statistics.

The focus on the Baltimore area and its congressman comes amid Trump battling over the past week on social media with others he has singled out for criticism, including two friendly nations: France and Sweden.

Trump also recently has been assailing four first-term Democratic lawmakers, all women of color, saying they should “go back” to their home countries, even though all four are American citizens, three of them by birth and the fourth, a Somali refugee, through naturalization.

As Trump unleashed his attacks, Cummings, a 13-term congressman, defended himself, saying, “Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

In recent congressional hearings, Cummings, as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, berated Kevin McAleenan, the acting Homeland Security chief for the condition of the country’s detention facilities at the border and the government’s lax records on tracking the whereabouts of migrant parents it had separated from children at the border.

Cummings’ committee is also investigating Trump’s presidency, but he is not among the more than 100 Democrats calling for impeachment proceedings.

The committee, voting along party lines last Thursday, authorized subpoenas for personal e-mails and texts used for official business by top White House aides, including Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner.

Cummings said lawmakers had obtained “direct evidence” that the president’s daughter, Kushner and others were using personal accounts for government business in violation of federal law and White House policy.

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney rejects the notion that Trump’s attacks on Cummings are racially motivated.

“The president is attacking Cummings for saying things that are not true,” Mulvaney told the Fox News Sunday interview show. “It has absolutely zero to do with race.” (VOA)

NYC Socialite on 10th Divorce Lawyer; Case Runs Longer than Entire Marriage

Everyone makes mistakes, the expression goes, but when the eraser wears out before the pencil, you’re pushing it.

By Pat Savage

What about a divorce proceeding that lasts longer (two years and counting) than the marriage (14 months)?

“A Manhattan socialite has dragged out a divorce and custody battle with her estranged elevator executive husband for twice the length of their actual marriage while cycling through nine lawyers, her ex’s attorney alleged in court Friday,” the New York Post has reported.

Actress Julianne Michelle Reeves, 34, and her husband Karl Reeves went their separate ways back in 2017. Since then, she has hurled accusations of abuse, cocaine use, infidelity and financial shenanigans. He denies them all.

“They were one of Park Avenue’s golden couples. A socialite-turned-actress and her millionaire CEO husband. New York society pages called their wedding a ‘fairy tale’ and the groom a ‘Prince Charming’,” reported the Daily Mail.

Reeves is reportedly attempting to cut off his ex-wife’s spousal support.

“As the couple both fight for full legal and physical custody of their two-year-old daughter, a disturbing portrait has emerged of a relationship allegedly marred by abuse, drugs, racism, and violence,” according to the Daily Mail. “The court documents, video, and audio clips seen exclusively by DailyMail.com allege that Reeves, the owner of elevator installation company CEI New York, is a Neo-Nazi. Video also show Reeves snorting what appears to be ketamine and cocaine from a glass dish in his kitchen, while records appear to capture him threatening to kill his actress wife’s parents.”

This was a high-profile marriage made in heaven. The November 2015 news item announcing it in the New York Times reads almost like a fairytale: “Julianne Michelle, a daughter of Joycelyn Engle and Joseph A. Di Palma of Manhattan, was married Saturday to Karl Christian Reeves, the son of Charlotte D. Revesz of Suffern, N.Y., and Karl Revesz of Manhattan. The Rev. Daniel G. O’Hare, a Roman Catholic priest, performed the ceremony at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Manhattan.

“The bride, 31, will continue to use her name professionally,” the Times continued. “She is an actress who has appeared in films and on television. She had a lead role in a 2006 film “The House Is Burning” and starred in “Awakened,” a 2014 film that was directed by her mother and for which the bride wrote the music and lyrics to four songs. The bride also owns Juls New York, a line of bracelets that she designs. She graduated from Marymount Manhattan College, and is pursuing a master’s degree in social work at Columbia.”

Sen. Ted Cruz: Stop Hezbollah in Latin America!!

At a Capitol Hill event on Thursday commemorating the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish Center in Argentina, Senator Ted Cruz warned that the Hezbollah terrorist organization responsible for the attack, which killed 85 people and wounded 200, is still active in Latin America.

“Hezbollah continues to radicalize people in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil through mosques and schools that preach the group’s extremist agenda,” Cruz, the keynote speaker at a policy discussion held by the Center for a Secure Free Society, charged. “It’s time for Latin America to reckon with the significant and the dangerous presence of Hezbollah in the region.”

The pro-Israel Republican senator congratulated Argentina for being the first Latin American country to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization on July 18.

As the Lebanese-based Iranian terror proxy’s growth was “unchecked” in “the tri-border area (TBA) that encompasses the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay,” Cruz urged the other two countries to follow suit.

Hezbollah has long been known to take advantage of the loose border controls in the TBA to move massive amounts of money from one country to another and launder it to help support its terror activities. Last July, with U.S. cooperation, Argentina’s Financial Intelligence Unit froze the assets of 14 Lebanese who live in the TBA and were allegedly part of the multi-million-dollar scheme.

It was all part of the world’s duty to keep the Islamic Republic in check, Cruz said.

He then spoke of the bill he had introduced in the Senate last month, called the Countering Hezbollah in Lebanon’s Military Act of 2019.

Part of the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1701 that ended the Second Lebanon War with Israel states that the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) is the only army that should exist in the country and therefore must disarm Hezbollah.

The proposed law says that unless the president can ascertain that the LAF is doing what is necessary to end Hezbollah’s and Iran’s influence over the army, U.S. military aid to Beirut would be cut by 20 percent.

Both Israeli analysts and politicians have said that it is currently impossible to differentiate between the Lebanese state and Hezbollah.

Last year, Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett threatened that in any future military conflict, “the State of Israel… will view Lebanon as responsible for any action from within its territory.” (World Israel News)

Heirs of Wasserstein Fortune in Fight with Dad’s Love Child Over $2.3B Hamptons Estate

It’s the kind of story – wealth and power, illicit sex, an innocent child, a playground of the rich and famous, and high drama in the courtroom – that some editors dream of.

By Pat Savage

The New York Post captured it beautifully in its headline: “Wasserstein heirs battle with dad’s love child over $2.3 billion Hamptons estate.”

The illegitimate child of the deceased banker and owner of New York magazine, Bruce Wasserstein – an 11-year old girl – is saying through her representatives that five half siblings are conspiring to rip her off to the tune of a $2.3 billion estate, a mansion in the exclusive Hamptons.

“In addition to six kids, Wasserstein, who died in 2009 at age 61, left behind a widow, two ex-wives, a mistress, and four lavish residences: a London townhouse, a Paris apartment, a 17-acre Santa Barbara estate, and a sprawling 27.5-acre oceanfront East Hampton property known as Cranberry Dune,” the Post reported.

Erin McCarthy was reportedly sleeping with a married Wasserstein, got pregnant and had a child, named Sky, in 2008. Apparently, the other kids don’t want to share with the result of their dad’s dalliance.

Wasserstein, of course, was born and raised in Midwood, Brooklyn. He was one of five children of Lola (née Schleifer) and Morris Wasserstein, a Jewish immigrant from pre-World War II Poland who emigrated to New York City and started a ribbon company. Wasserstein’s maternal grandfather, Simon Schleifer, was a Jewish teacher in the yeshiva in Wloclawek, Poland who later emigrated to Paterson, New Jersey and became a Hebrew school principal.

Piety, however, has no place in this tale. Despite his impressive credentials — investment banker, businessman, graduate of the McBurney School, the University of Michigan, Harvard Business School, and Harvard Law School (plus a year at the University of Cambridge) – Wasserstein had trouble with fidelity.

“The trustees overseeing the estate sold three of the four homes before reaching the 2015 deal with McCarthy, but Sky hasn’t gotten a penny from the property deal since the two sides are still squabbling over how much Cranberry Dune is worth,” the Post chronicled. “The estate insists the Further Lane property, which includes a 23,500-square-foot, seven-bedroom manse, is worth just $120 million.”

Wasserstein’s somewhat unkempt family tree looks like this:’

– Laura Lynelle Killin (married 1968, divorced 1974).

– Christine Parrott (divorced 1992 after giving birth to three kids, Ben, Pam and Scoop.

– Claude Becker (married 1996, divorced 2008 but not before having a pair of sons together).

– Angela Chao, (married 2009, up until Wasserstein’s death).

Official Set to Replace Puerto Rico Governor Refuses Job

The woman slated to replace Puerto Rico’s governor after he steps down next week said on Sunday she does not want the job.

Edited by: JV Staff

“I reiterate, I have no interest in occupying the position of governor,” Justice Secretary Wanda Vazquez wrote on Twitter. “It is a Constitutional dictum. I hope that the governor identifies and submits a candidate for the position of secretary of state before Aug. 2 and I have told him so.”
Governor Ricardo Rossello on Wednesday announced that he would step down on August 2 after nearly two weeks of massive protests triggered by a leaked obscenity-laced chat in which Rossello and close advisers insulted people including women and victims of Hurricane Maria.
By law, Secretary of State Luis Rivera Marin would have replaced Rossello, but he too was involved in the chat scandal and resigned earlier this month.
If a new secretary of state isn’t approved in time, the line of succession after Vazquez falls to Secretary of Treasury Francisco Pares and Secretary of Education Eligio Hernandez.
The U.S. territory has been rocked by protests since the leak of almost 900 pages of chats between the governor and several island officials. The chats, on the encrypted messaging app Telegram, shocked islanders for their vulgarity and crassness and raised questions about possible conflicts of interest and violations of the law. Israeli Arrow Weapon System Demonstrated at Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska

The Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) of the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) completed a successful flight test campaign with the Arrow-3 Interceptor missile.

Flight Test Arrow-01 demonstrated the Israeli Arrow Weapon System’s ability to conduct a high altitude hit-to-kill engagement. Interceptor tests were conducted that successfully destroyed target missiles. These tests were conducted at Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska (PSCA) in Kodiak, Alaska.

The Arrow-3 Interceptor successfully demonstrated an engagement capability against the exo-atmospheric target during the test. Although not part of the Israeli architecture, a U.S. AN-TPY2 radar participated in the test. Preliminary analysis indicates that test objectives were successfully achieved.

The Arrow Weapon System is a central part of Israel’s multi-layer defense system. The defense system is based on four operational layers: Iron Dome Defense System, David’s Sling Weapon System, the Arrow-2, and the Arrow-3.

“These successful tests mark a major milestone in the development of the Arrow Weapon System,” said MDA Director Vice Adm. Jon Hill. “This unique success in Alaska provides confidence in future Israeli capabilities to defeat the developing threats in the region. My congratulations to the Israel Missile Defense Organization, our MDA team, and our industry partners. We are committed to assisting the Government of Israel in upgrading its national missile defense capability to defend the State of Israel from emerging threats.”

IMDO Director, Moshe Patel: “Ten challenging years of development have culminated in this moment: the Arrow 3 weapon system completed a test campaign, during which an Arrow 3 interceptor completed full interception of the target. This is an extraordinary operational and technological achievement for the State of Israel, made possible by thousands of employees, engineers and officers from the Ministry of Defense, Israeli defense Industries, Israeli Air Force and our US partners. In addition, the fact that the tests were conducted in Alaska, tens of thousands of kilometers away from Israel, is another significant achievement that demonstrates the operational capabilities of the Arrow 3 system to successfully face any threat.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the following the remarks at the weekly Cabinet meeting: “In recent weeks we have carried out three pioneering secret experiments of the Arrow 3 missile. These experiments were held in the US, in Alaska, in full cooperation with our great ally the United States.

They were successful beyond any imagination. The Arrow 3 – with complete success – intercepted ballistic missiles beyond the atmosphere at unprecedented altitudes and speeds. The execution was perfect – all precise hits.

Today Israel has the ability to act against ballistic missiles that could be launched against us from Iran or anywhere else. This is a great achievement for the security of Israel.

All of our enemies should know that we will overcome them in both defense and offense.”

Netanyahu: “I would like to make it clear here that metal hit metal; it was not just a proximity detonation. The missile hit the missile all three times. This is a great achievement. First of all, I would like to thank – of course – the US Ambassador to Israel and, through you, the US administration as well. I would like to express deep and strong appreciation for advancing our joint security.

I would like to thank the Defense Ministry, the IDF, IAI and our ambassador, Ron Dermer, who was in Alaska for this. I want to thank all of the engineers and developers who brought about this breakthrough, this leap forward, which is considerable for the security of Israel with very great significance, especially at this time.”

US Ambassador David Friedman said: “On behalf of President Trump and the Trump administration, I just would like to tell you how delighted we were with the successful results of the test of the Arrow 3 missile system, a critical element of Israel’s missile defense.

The results were extraordinary. We’re very proud of our partnership with the State of Israel, the funding that we provided for this, the technical expertise that we added, obviously making our airspace available for this test over Alaska.

This is an extraordinary and an unprecedented example of the cooperation between our two great countries and from here may we continue to go upward and onward in making the world a safer place.”

Defense Ministry Directorate of Defense Research and Development head Dr. Danny Gold said: “Like the Prime Minister said, this is an unprecedented operation. This is a technological, operational and logistical breakthrough. At the forefront of technological and operational knowledge, we had three interceptions in a row, in space, at very high altitudes and at a very great distance, of long-range ballistic missiles.

This symbolizes the coherent and unprecedented cooperation with the US. We worked as one team with the US Missile Defense Agency. We sat together at one location 24/7 for a long time. All of this was under the leadership of the Defense Ministry Israel Missile Defense Organization headed by Moshe Patel, the security industries, IAI, Elbit-Elisra and RAFAEL, which worked together as a single team, of people aged 20-78, 24/7 continuously, and other agencies in support.”

Israeli Amb. Ron Dermer Secretly Flew to Alaska to Coordinate Strategy Against Iran

Dermer’s trip to Iran marked “a significant upgrade in security coordination with the U.S. against Iran,” according to a Channel 13 news report.

By: WIN Staff

Amid growing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, Ron Dermer, Israel’s Ambassador to Washington, traveled to Alaska last week to discuss enhanced coordination and strategy, Israel’s Channel 13 News reported on Friday.

The trip marked “a significant upgrade in Israeli security coordination with the U.S. against Iran,” the report said.

Additional details have been barred from publication, the report added, quoting unnamed Israeli sources.

Tehran on Wednesday successfully test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile which flew more than 600 miles from the southern part of the country to an area outside Tehran, in the north, a U.S. official told Fox News.

Iran announced that it was enriching uranium above the level permitted by the 2015 nuclear deal due to what it said was a lack of European action to save the pact after U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Iran has also taken to using target faces with pictures of Netanyahu and Trump for their training exercises.

Earlier this week, Iran announced that it had arrested 17 Iranian nationals allegedly recruited by the CIA to spy on the country’s nuclear and military sites, to which President Donald Trump responded that the claim had “zero truth.”

Last week, the Iran Revolutionary Guard shot down an American drone. “Iran made a very big mistake,” Trump warned.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also issued a statement on the incident, commenting, “In the last 24 hours, Iran has intensified its aggression against the United States and against all of us. And I repeat my call for all peace-loving countries to stand by the United States in its effort to stop the Iranians’ aggression. Israel stands by the United States on this.”

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump indicated that the U.S. was “ready for the absolute worst.”

“Frankly, it’s getting harder for me to want to make a deal with Iran because they behave very badly.  They’re saying bad things,” Trump said.

“We are very geared up,” he added, noting Iran is “really the number-one state of terror in the world.” (World Israel News)

Bernie Sanders: Our Policy Cannot be Pro-Israel

Democratic presidential candidate says he would consider using aid to Israel as leverage to force the Israeli government to act differently

By: Ben Ariel

Senator Bernie Sanders, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2020 elections, criticized Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and said the US cannot prioritize the wants and needs of Israel over all else if it wants to help bring peace to the Middle East.

Sanders’ comments were made in an interview with the “Pod Save America” podcast. The Vermont Senator, who is Jewish, opined that the tensions between Israel and Palestinians have become worse under Netanyahu.

“I lived in Israel … I have family in Israel. I am Jewish. I am not anti-Israel. I believe that the people of Israel have absolutely the right to live in peace, independence, and security. End of discussion, that is what I fervently believe,” he said.

“But I think what has happened is in recent years under Netanyahu, you have an extreme right-wing government with many racist tendencies,” charged Sanders.

Sanders said he would “absolutely” consider using the billions of dollars in military aid that the US sends to Israel each year as leverage to force the Israeli government to act differently.

He criticized the Trump administration over its overtures to Israel, asserting that they could put at risk the peace negotiations with the Palestinian Arabs.

“Our policy cannot just be pro-Israel, pro-Israel, pro-Israel. It has got to be pro-region, working with all of the people, all of the countries in that area,” said Sanders, who added that Palestinian Arabs deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

Despite being Jewish and having spent time in Israel, Sanders has a history of problematic statements on the Jewish state.

In April, he described the Israeli government as “racist” and said that “Netanyahu is a right-wing politician who I think is treating the Palestinian people extremely unfairly.”

Last year, he criticized Netanyahu and his policies, saying, “As someone who believes absolutely and unequivocally in Israel’s right to exist… we must say loudly and clearly, that to oppose the reactionary policies of Prime Minister Netanyahu does not make us anti-Israel.”

In June of 2017, Sanders recorded a video message to the Israeli leftist party Meretz, in which he said, “This occupation must end. Peace, real peace, means security not only for every Israeli, but for every Palestinian. It means supporting self-determination, civil rights and economic well-being for both peoples.” (INN)

Supreme Court Rules that Pentagon Funds Can Be Used for Border Wall

The Trump administration declared a major victory on Friday night, when the Supreme Court ruled that funds designated for the Pentagon can be used to build a wall on the US southern border. The White House can now tap $2.5 billion in  Defense Department money to replace existing sections of barrier in Arizona, California and New Mexico with more robust fencing, according to an AP report.

Edited by: JV Staff

In a 5-4 decision, the nation’s highest court lifted the freeze on the money that was imposed by lower courts as a lawsuit over the finds proceeded. Coming as no surprise, the five conservative justices on the court voted in favor of unfreezing the billions in Pentagon Funds, while the four liberal judges including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan all voted against lifting the freeze.

Trump tweeted after the announcement: “Wow! Big VICTORY on the Wall. The United States Supreme Court overturns lower court injunction, allows Southern Border Wall to proceed. Big WIN for Border Security and the Rule of Law!”   According to an AP report, the justices’ decision to lift the freeze on the money allows President Trump to forge ahead on a major 2016 campaign promise heading into his race for a second term

The Supreme Court’s action reverses the decision of a trial court, which initially froze the funds in May, and an appeals court, which kept that freeze in place earlier this month, according to the AP report.

The case the Supreme Court ruled in began after the 35-day partial government shutdown that started in December 2018. Trump ended the shutdown in February after Congress gave him approximately $1.4 billion in border wall funding. But the amount was far less than the $5.7 billion he was seeking, and Trump then declared a national emergency to take cash from other government accounts to use to construct sections of wall, as was reported by the AP.

The money Trump identified includes $3.6 billion from military construction funds, $2.5 billion in Defense Department money and $600 million from the Treasury Department’s asset forfeiture fund, according to the AP report.

The case before the Supreme Court involved just the $2.5 billion in Defense Department funds, which the administration says will be used to construct more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) of fencing. One project would replace 46 miles (74 kilometers) of barrier in New Mexico for $789 million. Another would replace 63 miles (101 kilometers) in Arizona for $646 million. The other two projects in California and Arizona are smaller.

Alexei Woltornist, a spokesman for the Justice Department, said in a statement, “We are pleased that the Supreme Court recognized that the lower courts should not have halted construction of walls on the southern border.  We will continue to vigorously defend the administration’s efforts to protect our nation.”

ACLU lawyer Dror Ladin said after the court’s announcement that the fight “is not over.” The case will continue, but the Supreme Court’s decision suggests an ultimate victory for the ACLU is unlikely. Even if the ACLU were to win, fencing will have already been built.

The Supreme Court is on break for the summer but does act on certain pressing items.

Trump Calls Out Rep Elijah Cummings for “Infested” District of Baltimore

President Trump was hit with new accusations of racism Saturday after he attacked a prominent black lawmaker and branded the majority African American city of Baltimore an “infested mess,” according to an AFP report.

Edited by: JV Staff

Trump’s comments came in the form of tweets that focused on Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, a vocal critic of the Trump administration and the head of the House Oversight Committee. Cummings district covers much of Baltimore.

“Cumming (sic) District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess,” the president wrote, calling it “the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States.”

“No human being would want to live there,” he said, in an attack ostensibly provoked by Cummings’ criticism of the harsh conditions facing would-be asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border.

AFP reported that the morning tweets ignited a firestorm of criticism, less than two weeks after the House of Representatives condemned Trump for “racist” comments targeting “The Squad” – four first-term Democratic congresswomen who are on record as making numerous statements that are vehemently anti-Israel and anti-Jewish. Trump also said that if they hate America they “can go back from where they came.”
The Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, accused Trump of a “racist” attack on a “champion … of civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague.”

“We all reject racist attacks against him (Cummings)” wrote Pelosi, who was born in Baltimore and whose father served as mayor of the city, according to the AFP report.
Joe Biden, the Democratic front-runner to challenge Trump in 2020, attacked Trump directly on Twitter.

“It is despicable for you to attack him and the people of Baltimore this way,” Biden wrote. “Once again you have proved yourself unfit to hold the office. A President is supposed to lift this nation up. Not tear it down.”

AFP reported that six more contenders for the White House in 2020 voiced their condemnation of Trump’s comments on Cummings. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker tweeted footage of a black CNN anchor and Baltimore native who broke down on air while reacting to the attack on his home city.

“This is painful. This is a moral, defining moment in America,” wrote Booker. “Silence is toxic complicity.”

Democratic 2020 contender Kamala Harris, a California senator who like Booker is black, likewise weighed in, saying she was “proud” to have her campaign headquarters in the Cummings district and calling Trump’s attack “disgraceful.”

The city’s Democratic mayor, Bernard “Jack” Young, also black, meanwhile rejected Trump’s rhetoric as “hurtful and dangerous.”

“It’s completely unacceptable for the political leader of our country to denigrate a vibrant American City like Baltimore, and to viciously attack U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings,” Young wrote in a statement. (AFP)

Did Victoria’s Secret CEO Les Wexner Have Direct Ties to Convicted Pedophile Jeffrey Epstein?

Fending off accusations that direct ties exist between the Victoria’s Secret Clothing Company and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, an L Brands spokesperson had spoken with CBS Money Watch and confirmed that the company board of directors hired an independent law firm to research whether Epstein played a role in the company which is based in Columbus, Ohio.

Edited by: JV Staff

It has been previously reported that L Brands CEO Leslie Wexner (who owns Victoria’s Secret) had both a personal friendship and a professional financial relationship with Epstein for decades. The emergence of this news has caused Victoria’s Secret stock to tumble in price for the last few weeks.

According to a CBS news report, Epstein served as Wexner’s personal money manager and business adviser. For Wexner’s part, he said that about 12 years ago, he terminated the friendship and business arrangement that he had with Epstein.

Epstein’s recent arrest for sex trafficking of girls has raised the question of whether Epstein also ever had a role officially or unofficially at Wexner’s retail company, according to the CBS news report. The Wall Street Journal reported that former employees have said Epstein was a part of corporate discussions, including giving input on what women should become Victoria’s Secret models.

In a related development, NBC News reported that Epstein was found injured and in a fetal position inside his cell at Manhattan Correctional Center late on Tuesday, according to sources close to the investigation.

Epstein, who is being held in the lower Manhattan jail as he awaits his trial for conspiracy and sex trafficking, was found semi-conscious with marks on his neck, two sources told News 4. Investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened, saying details remain murky.

Two sources told News 4 that Epstein may have tried to hang himself, while a third source cautioned that the injuries were not serious and questioned if Epstein might be using it as a way to get a transfer.

On Thursday, a senior official reiterated that all three theories — attempted suicide, try for transfer and attack by inmate — are still in play.

Epstein’s cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione was questioned by investigators, according to two sources close to the case.

According to the NBC News report, Tartaglione is a former police officer in Westchester County who was arrested in December 2016 and accused of killing four men in an alleged cocaine distribution conspiracy, then burying their bodies in his yard in Otisville in Orange County, according to court records.

In yet another related development, it was reported on Thursday by the NY Post that the Florida lawmaker who urged Gov. Ron DeSantis launch a investigation into  Epstein’s 2008 jail stint that had been marked by unusual privileges says she’s been getting threats. warning her to back off.

The Miami Herald reported that State Sen. Lauren Book has reached out to Capitol Police after receiving more than a dozen calls from menacing supporters of Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, who handled Epstein’s lenient “work release” program.

“I’ve received countless phone calls saying ‘Little girl you don’t know what you’re getting into’ and telling me that I should just stop,’’ Book said, according to the NY Post report.

In a statement, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office said it didn’t know of anyone trying to threaten or pressure Book.

On Tuesday night, it was reported in the JPost that mega Hollywood film director Quentin Tarantino who ignited Tinsel Town with his classic film “Pulp Fiction” back in the mid-1990s told Jimmy Kimmel on his eponymously named late night talk show on ABC that he would like to be a stay at home dad and perhaps retire from directing films.

Edited by: JV Staff

Tarantino is married to Israeli singer/model Daniella Pick, whose father is legendary singer/songwriter Svika Pick, who is also known as Maestro. Svika Pick is currently recovering from a stroke he had suffered while on a plane from London to Israel in the spring of 2018. He is scheduled to appear on stage again in less than a year’s time, according to Pick’s spokeswoman.

Tarantino told Kimmel that he just got married and wanted to have Israeli kids.

Last November, Tarantino married Pick. He had met her about 10 years ago when he was promoting the Holocaust film, “Inglorious Bastards” while in Israel. The couple now divide their time between Los Angeles and Tel Aviv, as was reported by the JPost.

Tarantino was on the Kimmel late night show to help promote his soon to be released film “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.”  The film stars such A list actors as Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. The film takes place in the summer of 1969 when the Manson murders were dominating the headlines,

According to a JPost report, Tarantino would like to do another film after this one before retiring.

“I’m not saying I’ll just disappear like J.D. Salinger,” Tarantino said.

Kimmel interrupted to ask if he was going to just play golf, and the director said, “I just got married, I want to have kids.”

Tarantino said he might work in television but not in movies.

“I kind of like the idea of making 10 motion pictures and then, boom, that’s it, that’s done. The filmography is locked and there you go.”

Kimmel wouldn’t let it go at that, saying. “Yeah, 12 would be good, too. Or 13, or even 50 is a nice number,” Kimmel replied.

“Well, you’re kind of talking me into it!” Tarantino said.

According to the JPost report, there have been rumors that Tarantino and Pick might be surprise guests at the Jerusalem Film Festival, which opens on Thursday, but it seems that they are busy attending promotional events in the US for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which opens in the US on Friday. It is set to be released in Israel on August 15.

Boris Johnson: Will He Be Good for the Jews?

Britain may be convulsed by Brexit—the issue that has brought buccaneering “Brexiteer Boris” to power. He has become prime minister, though, in the middle of a crisis over Iran.

By: Melanie Phillips

Britain now has its first celebrity prime minister.

On Tuesday, Boris Johnson was elected leader of the Tory Party following Theresa May’s resignation over her failure to deliver Brexit. On Wednesday, Johnson “kissed hands” with the Queen and thus succeeded Mrs. May as Britain’s PM.

As with all social or political developments of note, the Jewish world is predictably asking about this one: “Will it be good for the Jews?”

Johnson has entertained and scandalized Britain for years through his many scrapes, his jokes, his politically incorrect gaffes, his chaotic personal life, his classically trained erudition—he will surely be the first prime minister to install a bust of Pericles in 10 Downing Street—and his ebullient disregard of boring details, such as facts.

Britain may be convulsed by Brexit—the issue that has brought buccaneering “Brexiteer Boris” to power. He has become prime minister, though, in the middle of a crisis over Iran.

Last week, Iranian commandos hijacked a British-flagged tanker in the Straits of Hormuz. This was reportedly in retaliation for Britain’s seizure off the coast of Gibraltar of an Iranian tanker said to be en route to Syria and thus in breach of E.U. sanctions.

This crisis for Britain is ironic since the British government has not only been vehemently against U.S. President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which Britain helped draft, but has been working with the European Union to circumvent the resumed sanctions against Iran resulting from Trump’s move.

So will Johnson continue to defy President Trump, who this week lavished the highest possible praise on the new prime minister by suggesting that Johnson was a clone of himself?

As so often, Johnson’s own views on Iran are kaleidoscopic: Shake him at various times and a different picture emerges.

In 2006, he raised eyebrows when he wrote that Britain should help Iran get the nuclear bomb on the grounds that it was going to build it anyway.

In 2013, Johnson and I were on BBC TV’s “Question Time” panel. When I observed that Iran was the biggest threat to the West and needed to be neutralized, he scoffed that Iran posed no threat to anyone.

In October 2017, when he was foreign secretary, he expressed optimism that the Iran nuclear deal would survive; he even hailed it as a model for resolving tensions with North Korea.

And yet Ron Prosor, Israel’s former ambassador to the United Kingdom, has written that, when Johnson visited Israel as a fledgling MP—at around the same time that he was suggesting that Britain should help Iran get the bomb—he was preoccupied by the Iranian threat to Israel and the world.

Now, though, his views seem to have progressed, if only into further incoherence. Earlier this month, in an interview with Britain’s Jewish News, he strongly advised Iran “to cease this madness, not to take any further steps that would break the terms of the agreement, and not to acquire a nuclear weapon.”

He added: “As Prime Minister, I’d make sure we continue to do everything we can to constrain Iran’s disruptive behavior in the region.” And he says he is prepared to restart Iranian sanctions.

Really? Sanctions would entail Britain also walking away from the nuclear deal. Yet he still seems committed to that deal. At a leadership hustings, he said he still believed that “engaging with Iran and persuading Iran not to go forward with a nuclear-weapons program is the right way forward … ”

He has always expressed strong support for Jews. As London’s mayor, he spoke out strongly against anti-Semitism and opposed the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Yet throughout his tenure as London mayor, Johnson consistently ignored pleas from Jewish groups to ban the Al-Quds Day marches through London, which featured Hezbollah flags and calls to kill Jews.

Israel seems to regard Johnson as a great friend. In a recent interview in Britain’s Jewish News, he repeated his claim to be a “passionate Zionist,” and said that “wild horses wouldn’t keep me away” from visiting Israel as Britain’s prime minister.

Yet in 2014 he characterized the Israeli military campaign in Gaza against Hamas as “disproportionate.” On a previous visit to the area in 2004, after a Palestinian suicide-bombing attack in Haifa, Johnson observed that, having seen the humiliation of Palestinians living in Nablus at Israeli checkpoints, he could understand “the frustrations that might produce a cult of suicidal martyrdom. … It is all about a sense of powerlessness, and rage, and hatred, and a sense of injustice.”

Recently, though, he condemned the Palestinian policy of paying salaries to terrorists. “I think it’s ludicrous that there should be any kind of financial incentive or compensation for terrorist activities,” he has said.

So which is the true Boris Johnson? Some believe that he tailors his views to appeal to whichever audience he wants to reach.

That view may be too sweeping. A rather more accurate assessment, although hardly less unsettling, may be that although he does have genuinely warm feelings towards Jews and the State of Israel, he is also (despite his Brexiteer credentials) a liberal universalist.

That means he believes that everyone is a rational actor, which means he thinks everyone is susceptible to appeals to temporal self-interest, that murderous fanaticism is caused by material circumstances, and that therefore deals can and should be done with the devil.

As a result of these illusions, despite his warm feelings he may not always act in the best interests of Israel or the Jewish people.

The most immediate concern, however, is whether the Brexit crisis and resulting political instability will sink Johnson and bring to power Labour’s far-left, venomously anti-Israel leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is still refusing adequately to address the anti-Semitism that has erupted in his party and is in large part exacerbated by him.

Johnson was elected leader of the Tory Party because its members  are overwhelmingly determined to leave the E.U., with or without a withdrawal deal, on its already twice-postponed exit date of Oct. 31. Johnson convinced them he will achieve this “do or die.”

His problem, however, is that the majority of MPs are Remainers who are determined to stop a no-deal Brexit by any means.

London has been electrified by the government Johnson has now assembled in which Brexiteers have been placed in all key positions. This amounts to a declaration of war against those in both parliament and the civil service who are intent on frustrating the “will of the people” to leave the E.U.

But with a tiny overall majority, it’s hard to see how Johnson can avoid a general election very soon. This threatens unforeseeable consequences, with voters’ hitherto tribal party loyalties splintering down the Brexit/Remain chasm.

If Johnson could attract both conservatives and Labour supporters who feel utterly betrayed by the failure to deliver Brexit, he could destroy a Labour Party whose Remain supporters, many alienated by the anti-Semitism crisis, will be split between Remain-leaning Labour and the fanatically Remainer Liberal Democrats.

If, however, he was seen to be backsliding on Brexit, he would be finished and so would the Tory party—paving the way for some kind of coalition of Labour, LibDems, Scottish nationalists and Greens, which would be very bad for Israel and British Jews (and Britain).

The next phase of Britain’s revolutionary moment is upon us. Buckle up. (JNS.org)
