Mount Sinai Health System has filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the NYS Department of Health for a redesigned Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital and an upgraded New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. The CON application for the $600 million project, filed on Tuesday July 22nd, also includes plans for a new Mount Sinai Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center.

“Today marks an important step forward in Mount Sinai’s $1 billion commitment to rebuild, renew and revitalize health care for the Downtown community,” said Dr. Jeremy Boal , President of Mount Sinai Downtown, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of the Mount Sinai Health System. “From the new Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital and enhanced New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, to an expanded and enhanced ambulatory network and a new Mount Sinai Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center, we are transforming how health care services are delivered to New Yorkers.”

The construction will be part of the Health System’s $1 billion downtown transformation. Mount Sinai Health System, one of New York’s largest integrated medical and academic health systems, will move and then close its Mount Sinai Beth Israel to a new site two blocks away. The current hospital and ER, acquired in a deal with Continuum Health Partners in 2013, will remain open and operational while the construction is underway. Demolition of the new site at Second Avenue between East 13th and 14th streets is already complete. Mount Sinai hopes to receive the necessary permits and break ground in early 2020. As per the company’s press release, the new building, slated to open in 2023, will feature all private inpatient beds, cutting edge cardiac and neurologic interventional services, an operative platform, as well as a state-of-the-art emergency department. As per Crain’s NY the new hospital will have only 70 beds, compared with the 636 beds that the current hospital is licensed for (though only half of those beds are actually in use).

The newly built campus will be shared with the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, to offer improved Ophthalmologic and ENT clinical services, including a 24/7 eye trauma emergency department, as well as access to state-of-the-art imaging, pharmacy, and labs.

Also included in the application is a plan to create a $140 million behavioral health center, to be known as The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center. The project is slated to be the largest private investment in Behavioral Health in New York’s history. The goal is to create a “One-Stop” location for psychiatric, addiction, physical health, and social service needs. The new downtown facility, located at the site of the current Rivington House on the Lower East Side will offer a holistic approach to mental health, with all the services currently available at Mount Sinai Beth Israel plus a host of new services. It will be equipped with 135 beds, including 115 licensed by the state.

“The model of care for the Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Comprehensive Center will not be available anywhere else in New York. This Center exemplifies Mount Sinai’s deep and longstanding commitment to behavioral health, and it is not simply a re-location or addition of services,” said Dr. Sabina Lim, Vice President and Chief of Strategy, Behavioral Health, for the Mount Sinai Health System. “It is a new, transformational model of care for people with behavioral health conditions that creates a fully integrated continuum of care in one location.”

WeWork’s Adam Neumann Cashes Out to the Tune of $700M Before IPO Was Held

Adam Neumann just came into a lot of money.

Published reports say that Neumann, who co-founded and serves as chief executive officer of WeWork, the global real estate co-working startup, has cashed out of more than $700 million from his company. And its initial public offering has yet to happen.

The deal is unusual as far as the timing and size of the payouts. They apparently were accomplished through a combination of the sale of stock and loans obtained through Neumann’s equity in his firm. Another oddity is the fact that company founders who opt to liquidate their holdings generally wait until the IPO is done.

Neumann remains WeWork’s largest shareholder, according to The Wall Street Journal, which reported that he has established a family office to invest the proceeds. He has also reportedly hired money managers to handle the transactions.

“He’s also made significant investments in real estate in New York and San Francisco, including four homes in the greater New York metropolitan area, and a $21 million, 13,000-square-foot house in the Bay Area, complete with a guitar-shaped room (I guess a fiddle would be too on the nose),” reported the web site techcrunch.com.

Beyond that, Neumann has invested in commercial real estate of the type his company rents out in order to provide work space with unusually flexible leases. These have included properties in San Jose, Calif. and New York.

Neumann has cashed out more than $700 million from WeWork dating back to 2014 by selling some shares and also borrowing against his remaining stake, according to the WSJ report. “Axios reported that $300 million was in direct sales and another $400 million in loans. Neumann is said to still be the company’s largest shareholder, and he used the loans he took out in part to exercise stock options early and buy more WeWork shares—two facts that may assuage some concerns. But probably not all of them,” said pitchbook.com.

“A founder selling off such a large portion of his stock before an IPO would generally be considered a bad thing,” pitchbook.com added. “It’s largely a matter of aligning incentives, a corollary to the skin in the game that LPs often require from their GPs. Investors typically feel better about a CEO’s motivation to increase a company’s stock price if that CEO owns a large amount of said stock. You make money, I make money, all’s well.”

Israel’s under-20 national basketball team bested Spain 92:84 to win the European Championship twice running. Making it sweeter is that the victory took place before the home crowd of 3,400 in Tel Aviv.

It’s the third year in a row that the Israeli team has been in the final. Last year, Israel’s youth team won the Championship for the first time in its history and successfully defended its title this year.

The Israeli team hosted the championship in Tel-Aviv, after winning last year. The championship featured many tight games, and the fans enjoyed an excellent show of basketball throughout the season.

Most Valuable Player honors went to Deni Avdija, who put up 23 points with 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Avdija, signed to play for professional team Maccabi Tel Aviv, is said to be a good prospect for the NBA.

Yam Madar, still an unknown outside of Israel, also had an excellent game, scoring 17 points and 8 assists. Ynet says if he turns out to be a star this tournament will mark a milestone in his career. “He started the tournament as someone marked for success in our league, and finished it in the notebooks of scouts for the NBA,” Ynet‘s sports reporter wrote.

Yam Madar also had an excellent game, scoring 17 points and 8 assists in the victory.

Spain is considered an excellent team and didn’t lose once in the tournament until the final. It won its games by an average of 14 points and it never finished a halftime down, including in the final game where it finished tied with Israel (42:42) at the midpoint.

The Israeli team made it to the final after beating France on Saturday (81-70). The Israelis also beat Lithuania (94-78), Montenegro (88-69), Ukraine (93-74) and Italy (85-75).

Israel Wishes Boris Johnson a Mazal Tov on Becoming UK’s Prime Minister

By: Arye Green

Israel congratulated Boris Johnson on Tuesday after he won the Conservative party leadership race to become Britain’s next prime minister.

Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt with a substantial majority, getting 66% of the votes.

Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz congratulated Johnson and wished him a “Mazal Tov. ”

“Mazal Tov to Boris Johnson on becoming UK Prime Minister. I look forward to working with Prime Minister Johnson and his team to build on the existing strong relationship between the UK and Israel,” he tweeted.

He also thanked outgoing Prime Minister Teresa May “for the amazing and tireless work that she did to strengthen ties between our two countries.”

“Bilateral trade is up, tourism is up and security cooperation is saving lives. Thank you to a true friend,” he added.

President Reuven Rivlin also congratulated Johnson, tweeting “I am confident that under your leadership the excellent bilateral relations between our two countries will go from strength to strength. I hope to see you back here in Israel soon.”

President Donald Trump congratulated Johnson saying “he will be great!”

“We are going to unite this amazing country and we are going to take it forward,” Johnson told party members after he was announced as the winner.

He pledged to deliver Britain’s exit from the European Union on October 31 and to unite and energize the country with efforts to improve education, infrastructure and police.

The Brexit process was meant to be concluded in late March, but while EU officials have indicated no interest in renegotiating the divorce terms that Britain’s parliament has rejected three times so far, they did agree to push the deadline to October 31.

Johnson, a populist former foreign secretary under May and mayor of London, has expressed a willingness to withdraw Britain from the EU at that time with or without an agreement in place. Many members of parliament oppose a no-deal Brexit, saying such a move would be economically chaotic.

Johnson will officially replace Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday as she steps down following repeated failures to deliver Britain’s exit from the European Union.

He thanked May in his address for “extraordinary service” to the party and the country.

Johnson is considered a friend of Israel by many and has been to Israel numerous times in the past. Johnson, former mayor of London, signed the city up to the International Mayors United Against Antisemitism initiative. He has also confronted the anti-Israel BDS movement on several occasions.

As prime minister, Johnson is expected to be hawkish, particularly regarding the recent events in the Persian Gulf and Iran. The Iranian army forces ceased a British tanker only days ago.

“Congratulations to Bibi@netanyahu on becoming the longest serving PM in the history of Israel. Under your leadership, Israel has become a technology powerhouse and a world class economy…,” Trump tweeted on Sunday, a day after Netanyahu reached the milestone by surpassing David Ben-Gurion’s total of 4,875 days in office.

“….Most importantly you have led Israel with a commitment to the values of democracy, freedom, and equal opportunity that both our nations cherish and share!” a follow-up tweet read.

Netanyahu thanked Trump in a tweet an hour later, which also lauded the relationship between the United States and Israel: Thank you, President Trump, for your warm words, outstanding support & incredible friendship. I’m honored to have the opportunity to work with you. Under your leadership, we’ve made the alliance between our two remarkable countries stronger than ever. I know there’s more to come.”

On Saturday, Netanyahu served 4,876 days from 1996 to 1999, and from March 2009 to the present. He faces a new election on Sept. 17 and possible indictment in three different corruption cases the following month.

Prior to Netanyahu, the longest serving Israeli prime minister was its very first head of state in the aftermath of its founding in May of 1948.

David Ben Gurion, the country’s first prime minister who served in office for 4,875 days, from the establishment of the state in May 1948 until early 1954 He then served from November 1955 to June 1963.

Arabs desecrate the “little Western Wall” on Saturday.

By: WIN Staff

On Saturday, Arab vandals spray-painted graffiti on ancient stones from the Holy Temple in Jerusalem’s Old City.

The Arabic writing urged people to “Slaughter the Jews.”

Jerusalem City Council member Aryeh King called for an immediate investigation into the incident.

“I call on Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan to demand that police conduct a comprehensive, thorough investigation, since access to the Western Wall is covered by the security cameras of the Jerusalem District Police,” King said, according to the Jewish Press.

Following the arrest of an Arab girl (two have now been arrested), King requested of Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion to levy a hefty fine on the perpetrators and sue the girl and her accomplices for the destruction of property, according to reports.

Rabbi of the Heritage House in the Old City, Ben Packer, posted on his Facebook account Saturday night:

An Arab girl has been arrested for this, but is it really her fault? The place looks like a dump. There is a trash can and trash everywhere. There is nothing signifying in any way that this is a Jewish holy site. There is no guard/attendant? The real culprits? Chief Rabbi of the Western Wall, Mayor of Jerusalem, Knesset, etc. I’d let the girl go and FIX THE SITUATION THERE PERMANENTLY!!!

The “little Western Wall (Kotel HaKatan)” is a small portion of the Western Wall of the Temple Mount. It is located about 200 meters south of the Western Wall Plaza, next to Iron Gate (Sha’ar Ha-Barzel), near the Muslim quarter.

It is the second closest site to the Holy of Holies of the two ancient Jewish Temples that stood on the Temple Mount. The first closest site are the Kotel Tunnels.

Due to the sensitive location, police have not allowed any physical improvements to the area, including benches or bookcases for holy books, even though it receives many visitors. Students from Yeshivat Ateret Yerushalayim pray there every Sabbath.

Israeli MK Slams European Parliament for Hosting PFLP Terrorist

Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Gilad Erdan slammed the European Parliament for becoming “a platform for terrorists” after terrorist Khaled Barakat of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) gave a speech at its plenum. Photo by Adi Gefen/TPS on 22 July, 2019

Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Gilad Erdan slammed the European Parliament for becoming “a platform for terrorists” after terrorist Khaled Barakat of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) gave a speech at its plenum.

In a letter sent to President of the European Parliament David Maria Sassoli, Erdan expressed his dismay that Barakat was invited to the European Parliament and that he addressed it.

The PFLP was designated a terrorist group by the European Union, the US, Canada, and Israel.

Barakat, who also serves with Samidoun, an anti-Israel organization that promotes boycotts on the Jewish state, was invited to parliament by Spanish MEP Manu Pineda.

In the letter, Erdan urged for “a robust system to be set in place to ensure members of designated terrorist groups will not be allowed to enter the European Parliament in the future.”

Barakat was joined by Mohammed Khatib, the European Coordinator for Samidoun. Both Barakat and Khatib were prominently featured in the Ministry of Strategic Affairs February report “Terrorists in Suits” which revealed the close ties shared between the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement and the Hamas and the PFLP terrorist groups.

Erdan further urged Sassoli to consider condemning “the exploitation of the parliament’s platform by terror-linked operatives,” and pointed out that Pineda has expressed his support in the past for the PFLP and knew about Barakat’s connections to the terrorist group.

Barakat told the EU parliament that “the BDS is a movement that is important to us, and it is important to note that the Israeli government ministry that fought us in Europe is the Ministry for Strategic Affairs under the leadership of the racist and right-wing Israeli minister Gilad Erdan.”

This was not the first time an EU-designated terrorist group member spoke at the European Parliament. In 2017, PFLP operative and former airplane hijacker Leila Khaled spoke at the there. Following the incident, and after being contacted by Erdan, former President of the EU Parliament Antonio Tajani declared he would work “to systematically deny access to all individuals” linked to terror from speaking at the EU Parliament.

In his letter to Sassoli, Minister Erdan said that “such unfortunate occurrences must not be allowed to repeat themselves. The European Parliament must never be a platform for terrorists.”

The recently released report by the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, “Terrorists in Suits”, revealed over 100 ties were found between terrorist operatives and BDS organizations.

Barakat was included in the report for his roles in recruiting terrorist operatives, transferring terror funds from Lebanon to Belgium, and helping PFLP members receive training from the Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah.

As part of the political campaign led by Erdan, the report’s findings were sent to the German Minister of Interior Horst Seehofer with a request to take action against operatives and organizations mentioned in the report. German authorities in June announced that Barakat’s visa would not be renewed and that all of his political activities in the country were banned.

Erdan stressed in the missive that “Barakat, a PFLP Central Committee member was recently prohibited by German authorities from speaking at a political event due to his ties to terror… and the European Parliament must not be used as a platform for members of murderous terrorist organizations.”

PA Prevented Compromise between Israel & Arabs on Illegal J’slm Construction

Fatah members and representatives of the Palestinian Authority (PA) prevented a compromise and thwarted legal proceedings that could have prevented Israel’s demolition of illegally built structures in the Arab village of Tsur Baher, TPS has learned.

Police and IDF forces on Monday demolished 13 illegally-built structures in Tsur Baher, near Jerusalem.

Acting after Israel’s High Court of Justice cleared the legal path, the forces demolished the structures, which were built in proximity to the security barrier running on Jerusalem’s outskirts which diminished its effectiveness.

Local residents told TPS that some of the structures could have been saved, but that Fatah “ruined this opportunity so that they could stand out as nationalist operatives in the village and even receive money from the PA,” which could then be embezzled by Fatah, one local resident told TPS.

In recent months, the apartment owners were in contact with Israeli authorities, through a lawyer and religious officials, and attempted to arrive at a compromise that would have saved at least some of the buildings. However, the PA worked to thwart these contacts.

Fatah operatives pressured the residents not to cooperate with the lawyer and promised them compensation from the PA. Fatah members Hamda Hamda, Muhammad Amira and Nasser Amira demanded that no legal proceedings be held vis-à-vis Israeli authorities. They enlisted Muslim clerics to asset them.

TPS obtained a copy of the draft agreement between Israel and the residents. However, after receiving guarantees from the PA for financial compensation, the local residents withdrew from it and refused to pay the legal fees entailed with finalizing the agreement.

The lawyer representing the residents told TPS that the residents lost a golden opportunity to cancel or limit the scope of the demolition and refused to cooperate with the officials who worked as intermediaries between Israel and the residents.

Terrorist Who Killed IDF Soldier Ronen Lubarsky Sentenced to Life in Prison

A military court in Judea sentenced Islam Yusuf Abu Hamid to life in prison after he was convicted of murdering IDF soldier Ronen Lubrasky.

He was also ordered to pay NIS 258,000 in compensation to Lubarsky’s family.

Similarly, he was convicted of obstruction of justice for tampering with the crime scene after the incident.

Abu Hamid was convicted of killing St.-Sgt. Lubarsky, a member of the elite Duvdevan unit, who was on an operation in the al-Amari camp near Ramallah in May 2018. Abu Hamid dropped a marble slab on Lubarsky’s head from a rooftop, and Lubarsky died of his wounds a few days later.

Abu Hamid was arrested by Lubarsky’s peers a month after the incident, and his apartment was later demolished by the IDF.

Hamid comes from a family of Hamas terrorists, and his brothers have carried out several terrorist attacks leading to the deaths of Israelis, including the February 1994 shooting death of Shin Bet operative Noam Cohen.

Hamid himself had been incarcerated in Israeli prison from 2004 to 2009 for terrorist activities committed on behalf of the Hamas terror group.

Lubarsky’s family expressed disappointment from the verdict after having campaigned for a death sentence verdict.

“We are requesting a simple thing. Israel has been dealing with this terrorism for many years now. Here we see a family of 5-6 brothers in prison together. We’re looking for something that will deter them from committing these things in the future,” said Arik Lubarsky, Ronen’s brother.

“Prison is like summer camp for them…it has to stop. We saw how the monetary fines are significant to them, life sentences don’t bother them, but money is a big issue to them. The Israeli government has to understand how terror works. They care about money, about their homes and their lives, so these are the areas to focus on,” he added.

The family has requested that the terrorist receive a NIS 5 million fine, equivalent to the salary he will receive from the Palestinian Authority, which pays convicted terrorists and their families a monthly stipend.

Israeli Company Aiding NASA Astronauts to Keep Safe on Way to Mars

StemRad, an Israeli tech company that produces personal radiation protection equipment for a variety of applications, is joining NASA in its venture into deep space, and primarily to Mars.

After reaching the Moon in April with SpaceIL’s Beresheet spacecraft, the Israeli space tech scene is booming. While SpaceIL recently announced it would aim again for the Moon in its next mission, one Israeli company is already taking part in a Space venture and has joined NASA in its future missions to Mars.

One of the biggest obstacles for astronauts on long deep-space missions is the immense solar radiation. The exposure to solar particles outside the protective atmosphere can be very harmful to the astronauts who may suffer exposure to high doses of radiation. The leading cause of death, in this case, is damage to the individual’s bone marrow, the body’s blood factory.

StemRad specializes in personal radiation solutions, providing service to military forces, first responders to disaster sites, reactor personnel, physicians and astronauts. In all these fields, radiation is a significant occupational hazard.

Developing cost-effective and comfortable solutions is quite a challenge. StemRad’s solution to the radiation problem harnesses the regenerative capability of stem cells to allow the body to recover after exposure. They do so by selectively and effectively shielding the bone marrow and other stem cell-rich organs in the abdominal and pelvic regions such as the ovaries, colon and bladder.

StemRad explained that their solution is the only way to provide protection while remaining mobile, which is crucial for astronauts in Space. Additionally, the company says that competing whole body solutions offer little to no protection from penetrating radiation such as gamma rays, as they would have to weigh a quarter of a ton to do so.

The Israel Space Agency sponsored StemRad, which partnered with Lockheed Martin to send the vest to the International Space Station. The vest will feature the Israeli flag, marking the significant contribution Israel has made to safe space exploration.

The launch of the product will take place in October and will enter a testing phase to examine the viability of the personal protective equipment for operational use. The vest will be tested by three female astronauts in various micro-gravity scenarios.

This is a crucial test before the equipment can be used for deep space missions.

Forcing Landlords into Bankruptcy Will Destroy NYC

0
The City Rent Stabilization Association and the Community Housing Improvement Program have both filed cases in the Eastern District claiming that New York's law violates both the Due Process and Takings clauses of the United States Constitution

Landlords throughout New York State and especially those in the City claim our elected legislators (backed by DeBlasio) have set up, with their recently enacted stricter rent regulations, a Pandora’s box of potential conflicts. Challenges are already being worked up by teams of lawyers and it’s more than a certainty that litigation opposing these new draconian measures will end up in the courts and most assuredly way up to the Supreme Court for jurisdiction. By their actions the Albany crowd may have doomed rent control altogether.

The City Rent Stabilization Association and the Community Housing Improvement Program have both filed cases in the Eastern District claiming that New York’s law violates both the Due Process and Takings clauses of the United States Constitution. And, of course, leave it to those radical Leftists, Progressives, Socialists and Communists who bask in disrupting the economic growth and welfare of whatever city they decide to destroy by residing in. UBS analyst, Jonathan Woloshin, writes: “We wish to emphasize that these recently passed laws may not mark the end of ‘rent reform’ in New York. A number of tenant advocacy groups including The Upstate Downstate Coalition, Citizen Action New York and the Democratic Socialists of America have been very publicly vocal of their desire for even more stringent rent regulations.”

We have always been on the side of those who own their own businesses, those who have gambled their own dollars to build, purchase and develop safe, secure housing for those who wish to rent and reside in our city. These entrepreneurs fuel the stability and growth of our city yet our legislators wish to strangle them with rules and regulations that carbon copy those of a dictatorial regime. Just take a gander at the housing as seen in videos of Cuba that are dilapidated, crumbling, dangerous and to put it plainly, ugly.

As an example one of their tyrannical laws stipulated that a landlord is forbidden from taking a unit in his own building for his own use. It also limits the size of security deposits, sets new barriers to evicting tenants who are criminals or rent withholding ones and guarantees that high income tenants can’t have their up scale apartments escape the rent stabilization program. We ask, “Just who owns these buildings? Who pays for the renovations to keep them safe, clean and up to code? Who is forced by law to rent to those whom they see as unfit to live in their units?” It is patently unfair for the city or state to poke their politically tainted fingers into forcing landlords to fall into bankruptcy merely to satisfy those who would turn our city into another Havana or Caracas. We recall vividly the Communist apartment houses built during the Stalin years and saying so, we blink when we walk past the public housing buildings run by the City. And legislators are telling actual landlords how to run their business? Give us a break!!!

Cheering on Mariano Rivera as He Cheers on Israel!!!

0
Former NY Yankees relief pitcher Mariano Rivera, Jewish Voice publisher David Ben Hooren and former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg. Recognized as the greatest relief pitcher of all time, Mariano Rivera created a nice for himself in the history books on baseball for becoming the very first player to ever be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with a unanimous vote by the Baseball Writers of America. Always a fan favorite and known by the sobriquet “Sandman” among diehard NY Yankee fans, Rivera is also a huge supporter of Israel and has visited the country several times.

Rarely, in today’s world of spoiled, overpaid, over publicized, self-centered, America-hating athletes, do we find a shining star such as Mariano Rivera, who was the first player ever to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with a unanimous vote of the Baseball Writers of America. Not only was a proud pinstriped Yankee for his entire Major League career, but he appeared in 13 All Star games, was in 5 World Series championships with the Yanks and in 1999 was selected as the World Series Most Valuable Player. But all of his accomplishments have not spoiled this guy. He’s a naturalized citizen who is an outspoken supporter of the United States as opposed to the likes of ex-NFL’er Colin Kaepernick and female soccer player, Megan Rapinoe. He puts them to shame in every category of common sense, humility and respect for this land. That’s why we just love the guy.

Always available in the clutch during a tight game between the NY Yankees and their opponents, Mariano Rivera was the most reliable closer in Yankees history. A native of Panama, Rivera developed his love for Israel through the teachings of his church. As a devoutly religious man, he has visited Israel and this year, Rivera addressed the annual Christians United For Israel Summit in Washington, DC. Sports fans around the globe have enormous respect for Rivera for his professionalism, his superlative pitching skills and the fact that he is a true mensch.

However, he is also a devout Christian who is an open, proud, enthusiastic Israel supporter. He has been to Israel twice. He noted in an interview: “The experience that I had in Israel just speaks volumes in it of itself. The experience that I had there, it was amazing. There are no words to describe what I felt. I believe that part of me is Jewish. I have to take a DNA test to see where my family came from, where I come from because there is something in me that just moves me to have something special for the Jewish community and Israel.”

But to Jew haters, specifically one obviously self-hating one, Robert Silverman, who bashed Mariano in the Daily Beast, claims that this Yankee great, no matter how he is adored not only by the fans but opposing players as well, “served at the pleasure of a racist president, taken part in thinly veiled propaganda on behalf of an apartheid government in Israel and gotten chummy with outright bigots and apocalyptic loons.” One of these so called “bigots,” this Silverman fool names is Pastor John Hagee, a widely respected Christian leader, one of the most influential, pro-Israel spokespeople who is the founder of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), a powerful Christian pro-Israel movement to which Mariano Rivera belongs and represents world-wide. Would that our own community of Jews were as staunchly pro-Israel and supportive of Jews as Christians such as Hagee and Rivera. We, at the New York Jewish Voice, give credit to these two Menschen and their movement and pray that the enemies we both share finally wake up and silence their dangerous hate-filled voices that threaten both the Jewish and Christian communities. Again, we are proud to put our arms around Yankee baseball great, Mariano Rivera, and wish him, his family and his causes the blessings of our common G-d.

Tax Dollars Going Down the Drain???

Dear Editor:

Drip, drip, drip, watch your tax dollars go down the drain. Have you also seen all the “Don’t Let Tax, Water, Or Repair Charges Come Between You and Your Property” full page ads in many daily and weekly neighborhood newspapers? It deals with New Yorkers who owes real estate tax water sewer, emergency repair or other property–related charges “the City of New York may sell a lien on your property” advertisement. Is this the best way the NYC Departments of Finance, Environmental Protection along with Housing Preservation and Development can spend taxpayers dollars?

Why can’t all three agencies compare their respective lists of people who owe money with those filing city and state tax returns? Surely the technology exists to place a lien on any tax refunds? You could also extend citizens the courtesy of a telephone call, letter or E-mail informing them of their overdue obligations.

What’s next, will the City send out Marshals going door to door serving subpoenas?

When will either NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer or NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson who are both 2021 Mayoral-wanns-bes put an end to this waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayers dollars?

Sincerely,

Larry Penner

Warren Joins with Anti-Israel Forces

Dear Editor:

Elizabeth Warren, Democratic candidate for President, appointed Max Berger as her “Director of Progressive Partnerships.” Who is Berger? “Berger co-founded IfNotNow whose openly stated goal is to end Israel’s existence, and calls the Jewish state, “violent, “deadly,” “a nightmare,” and “morally indefensible.”

Shortly after, Hamas issued these new calls for worldwide genocide of all Jews, “We must attack every Jew on planet Earth and slaughter and kill them,” declared Hamas Political Bureau member Fathi Hammad on Friday. “We will lacerate them and tear them to pieces,” he added.”

Berger has stated: “Confession: I would totally be friends with Hamas.” (Feb. 20, 2013)

[Hamas] “protestors[‘] will to resist oppression gives me hope.” (May 15, 2018.)

Had enough? There’s more: “Max Berger published an op-ed in “Think Progress” entitled “American Jews must Stand with Ilhan Omar,” in which Berger claimed, “Omar is the kind of leader America — and the American Jewish community — needs”. “Berger also supports antisemitic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who openly supports BDS and Israel’s destruction, replaced Israel with “Palestine” on her Congressional map, accused pro-Israel Americans of “dual loyalty,” and associates with leading antisemites and terrorists.”

Well I don’t know about you but when I hear the word “progressives”, I shudder. And for good reason. These repressive, fake “progressives” unite to ignore the true atrocities in our world in favor of singling out only Israel’s right to exist.

So, what conclusions can we make from these latest unholy alliances? Hamas’ genocidal goals are only encouraged by hearing that a major presidential candidate in America promotes Israel’s end. Berger has stated he supports Hamas. Does this make Warren a party to genocide? You tell me. If Warren appointed a Neo Nazi to be her “Progressive Director”, what would her fellow Democrats say? Yet when she appoints Berger, who smears Israel with lies, who openly calls for an end to the only Jewish state in our world, we hear…the usual silence. Warren has now revealed her true self, her dishonest, superficial intellect. When this mob Berger and Warren support come for them, they will be screaming the loudest. That I assure you.

Sincerely

Avoiding Summer Tragedies

Dear Editor:

Just a word of caution before we begin our summer vacations. Tragically, every year at this time, we begin to witness the kind of tragedies that are beyond heartbreaking. Young people in the Catskills; at camps or bungalow colonies becoming seriously injured or even killed in accidents that could have been avoided. Each year we hear of many fatal car accidents with entire families being affected. Every year we hear of fires, drownings, kidnappings and other horrible events taking place. We all want to have a joyful, fun and very relaxing vacation, but we must also be quite vigilant about our surroundings. And let us raise our voices to Hashem and we beseeched Him for protection at this time and always!!

Sincerely

Why AOC Shouldn’t Invoke Concentration Camps

Dear Editor:

When Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently used the term “concentration camps” and the expression “Never Again” to refer to the detention centers on the U.S.-Mexico border, I found myself torn. The pain and urgency of America’s immigration and asylum crisis are immense. At the same time — and although my position is unpopular with some — I cannot ignore Representative Ocasio-Cortez’s continued politically-motivated marginalization and diminishment of the tragedies that define Jewish identity and concerns today. As President of the American Jewish Congress, one of America’s oldest and most visible organizations dedicated to defending the Jewish people and promoting their values, it is my duty to speak out on both matters.

All Americans have a duty to speak out against the situation on the U.S.-Mexico border, which is deplorable. Our treatment of these migrants who seek better lives in America, and especially the children, defiles our core values as a nation. It also goes against the Jewish traditions of compassion and empathy for others, the pursuit of social justice, and tikkun olam — healing the world and making it better. The American Jewish Congress condemns these human rights abuses in the strongest possible terms and call for their immediate end.

Because our values are at stake, the politics needed to resolve the crisis must transcend party and creed. Sadly, the politics on both sides of the aisle remain divisive and counterproductive. I was born in 1945 in a displaced persons camp in Germany, immediately after my parents survived the systematic murder of six million Jews by the Nazis. For me, the term “concentration camps” means something very specific and personal, and it pains me to hear it used lightly or improperly. This is the reason I will continue to vehemently call out Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — or anybody else, for that matter — for abusing the collective memories and intergenerational scars of the Jewish people for cheap political gains.

Representative Ocasio-Cortez’s theatrics are unacceptable. Her use of words and phrases which conjure painful emotional triggers for the Jewish people displays obliviousness to the feelings and history of Jews, and demeans her own cause by rendering these words elastic and adaptable for political purposes. Scholars and pundits now weighing in on the technical definition of a concentration camp are similarly misguided. “Never” and “Again,” likewise, are two words that can be found in dictionaries, and there they will appear devoid of any larger meaning at first glance; nonetheless, taken together, these words carry existential meaning and purpose for the Jewish people. These words and phrases are vessels of pain and identity bearing great significance to Jewish Americans, and our elected representatives should be cognizant of this.

The situation on the border is brutal and countermands America’s deepest-held values. But connecting it to the Holocaust in order to get attention and score political points is lazy and divisive; what we need is real effort and solidarity among people of goodwill to confront the problem.

Sincerely

Jack Rosen

Jewish Fawning Over Omar Has Made Her More Aggressive

1

Most of the Jewish community has feverishly and piously supported last week’s Democrat-sponsored Resolution condemning President Trump’s remarks against Ilhan Omar. Omar, of course, is a notorious, unrepentant anti-Semite and daily demonizer of Israel. But she has become, for many Jews, a heroine, a civil rights star, a noble cause. Enjoying such support, Omar rewarded the Jewish community by immediately announcing, after the Resolution’s passage, a piece of legislation demanding that Congress vote in favor of BDS against Israel and her Jewish inhabitants.

Seeing that Jonathan Greenblatt of the ADL (formerly Special Assistant to Barak Obama) chose to define President Trump’s accurate criticism of Omar’s anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism as simply “playing politics,” Omar understands that the establishment Jewish community seems willing to live with her anti-Jewish prejudices if in service to damaging Donald Trump. She sees the weakness among American Jewry, and it has now emboldened her to introduce BDS legislation. She knows the Jews in Congress and the Jews in the cities will not stand in her way. Indeed, many are choosing her.

The criticism against the President was not limited to secular types such as Greenblatt, but also came from some rabbis, like Reform Rabbi Rick Jacobs. One Orthodox rabbi, Yaakov Menken, sadly, published a piece in the Daily Wire where he referred to the President’s words as “obnoxious,” “damaging”, “half-baked”, and “offensive”.

Such statements are emboldening Omar. She smells the self-righteousness, the virtue-signaling, and the political correctness emanating from Jews and some rabbis. The day after the Resolution, she responded to the criticisms of the President that were so widespread in the Jewish community. What did she do? She compared the State of Israel to the Nazis of the 1930s and categorized a need to boycott Israel as an American value and reminiscent of how America boycotted Nazi Germany.

Greenblatt and others attacked the one man who has, more than anyone else, stood up for Israel and against anti-Semitism. Their focus was more on parsing Trump’s words instead of focusing on the real and dangerous goals of Omar and her allies. They interpreted the President’s words in the most extreme and critical fashion, thereby providing Omar with succor.

Beyond everything else, President Trump is valiantly fighting for the dignity of America while others are seizing an opportunity for scoring “virtue” points. Omar, not Trump, is the threat. Her appetite, her aggressiveness, grows in proportion to those choosing to pounce on the President and provide her with victim-status.

Like many of us, the President was irked by remarks where Omar lauded the foreign country of her birth, Somalia, a notoriously brutal and cruel regime, while incessantly indicting America’s founding as primarily based on genocide, slavery, and racism. She sees no difference between Al Qaeda in Somalia and our society here in America that provided her asylum. Any self-respecting American should, like the President, be insulted and disgusted by her negative view of America.

Omar is not simply someone with a gripe or two; rather, she is intent on demoralizing Americans and making them despise their country, referring to it as almost no better than some of the worst places on earth. Only people who themselves loathe America can find nothing wrong with someone who spurns the very country that gave her safe haven.

The President did not call for her exile, rather that she first fix the problems in the country, Somalia, that she lauds and afterwards return here to fix the problems she associates with America. The truth is, as many have suggested, if she so dislikes America, wouldn’t it be best for her to live in a place that she favors?

People that come to such a wonderful and generous country such as America should not spend most of their energy trying to make citizens dislike their own country. In contrast, my great grandfather, Samuel, came to America and continued thinking it was the luckiest thing that ever happened to him.

There is much more to Omar than meets the eye. She is not some tender compassion-crusader. She is not so innocent, nor a Rosa Parks. She is brazen, impudent, unrelentingly aggressive, and seems to enjoy punching Americans in the face while mocking our love of this country. I suspect she fits into a more dangerous category, representing forces intent on upending America as we know it.

In one of history’s most confounding moments, too many in the American Jewish community are championing the very person who wants to destroy Israel and, no doubt, those Jews supportive of Israel. Too many Jews see their protection, identification and fraternity with the intersectional groups, even those hostile and those calling Israel and Jews Nazis. It is a grave mistake. They are blind to the particulars staring them in the face and view life through the generalizations they made decades ago. For example, they still fear American nationalism and conservative Christians, despite the positive sentiments and numerous acts of kindness from them toward the Jewish community throughout the last century.

Omar and BDS are co-joined with Hamas, the very Hamas that this week called for the killing of Jews worldwide. We shouldn’t be searching for ways to champion her as a kindred victim. However, most American Jews are more concerned with intersectional feelings and goals than Jewish safety, and are willing to have the State of Israel, and its Jewish inhabitants, called Nazis if that’s what their racist intersectional heroines insist.

Too many live in an ersatz cocoon, according to a newly defined Jewishness, far removed from Judaism. Sadly, much of American Jewishness, as opposed to authentic Judaism, has made Israel and the safety and survival of the Jewish people secondary, or insignificant, when weighed against their preferred identity as “progressive” members of a global society. This is the curse of universalism, which has afflicted the Jewish people since the early 19th century.

A grateful and self-respecting people would give the benefit of the doubt to Mr. Trump, the man who has befriended them so much and who fights for the country, America, that has provided Jews with so much blessing. Indeed, Jews who have prospered in this golden land should be in the forefront defeating a person like Omar who has, as her primary purpose, the besmirching of America and Israel. The purpose of her treacherous, stealth campaign is to make Americans feel so negative about their country that they want to replace our historic ethos and system with an amalgamation of Marxism and Shariah.

Erdogan’s American Gamble

0

Ever since Turkey officially selected the Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system for its long-range air-aircraft and anti-missile architecture at the end of 2017, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has not changed his rhetoric that the purchase was “a done deal;” and that “it is Turkey’s sovereign choice to deploy which air defense system is on its soil.” In response, the U.S. administration threatened to suspend Turkey’s membership in the multinational Joint Strike Fighter program, which is building the F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighter jet. The U.S. has also threatened Turkey with more sanctions within the Countering American Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. Industry officials say the CAATSA sanctions may cost Turkish companies more than $10 billion in lost (sub-) contracts. Turkey has committed to buy at least 100 F-35s and has already paid $1.4 billion.

Erdoğan just shrugs it off. He says that Turkey would consider co-production of the S-400 and the more advanced S-500 system with Russia; that the S-400 was Turkey’s sovereign decision and that Turkey would also open negotiations for the acquisition or co-production of the Russian-made Su-57 fighter jet in place of the F-35s.

The S-400 can engage targets at a range of up to 400km (250 miles). It has been designed to shoot down NATO’s aerial assets — including the F-35s in the making.

The first parts of the S-400 systems arrived in Ankara on July 13.

U.S. Representative John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement on July 12:

“Turkey’s decision to proceed with the acquisition of the Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile system presents a serious national security threat to the United States and to our NATO allies. By purchasing and integrating a sophisticated Russian missile defense system into NATO hardware, Turkey not only stands to jeopardize NATO security in the region but also presents Russia with a victory in its ongoing effort to sow division and distrust among NATO member states. Under President Erdogan, Turkey has spiraled – perilously – into an anti-democratic, authoritarian regime whose actions have repeatedly undermined NATO defenses. In order to demonstrate that it can operate as a trusted and reliable partner in the region, Turkey must take immediate steps to completely dismantle and return the S-400 system to Russia.”

Meanwhile, the Turkish lira fell and so far this year the country’s economy has contracted again.

The relationship between Ankara and Washington could drift into a storm if the U.S. retaliates in the way it promised: Suspend Turkey’s membership in the JSF program, stop Turkish pilots’ training; fail to deliver other critical military gear, especially the smart munitions Turkey uses against Kurdish militants in its own southeast and/or in northern Syria and northern Iraq; sanction senior Turkish officials and defense companies involved in the S-400 program; and a new wave of economic sanctions may push the country’s already fragile financial posture into a free fall.

One might use a bit of political acrobatics here: Squeeze Erdoğan further (economically) but without burning bridges: Erdogan will not be in charge by, say, 2074.

In Washington there are three options to deal with an ally-turned-menace:

  1. Since there are several other transactional issues for which the U.S. and Turkey remain dependent on each other, go soft on the sanctions.
  2. Recall the case of Pastor Andrew Brunson, when Turkey’s economic downturn helped to secure the American pastor’s release by squeezing Turkey economically. What Erdogan fears most are the U.S. CAATSA sanctions. According to the latest official statistics, the unemployment rate in Turkey is 13%, with 4.2 million people looking for work. The economy is in recession and the lira rate unstable.
  3. Devise a pragmatic blend of both plans to try to avoid permanently explosive damage to the country.

By becoming the first NATO ally to deploy the Russian-made S-400 air defense system on its soil and ignoring interoperability, NATO members will have to figure out how to deal with a new “frenemy.”

Turning Elections into a Binary Choice: Us or Them

What’s common to both the anti-Trump and anti-Netanyahu media-supported campaigns orchestrated by the Leftist-progressive political parties in the United States and in Israel, is the goal of making the coming elections an either us or them choice

By: Ron Jager

The juvenile “Mod Squad” of four freshmen congresswomen deceptively accuse anyone critical of their clearly anti-American, anti-Semitic, and anti-Western rantings of being racists and fundamentally opposed to people of color.

Ehud Barak and Benny Gantz, both vocal opponents of the Likud party and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dishonestly accuse the current leader of Israel of being a danger to Israel’s Democratic system demonizing the legitimacy of his re-election over the years.

What’s common to both the anti-Trump and anti-Netanyahu media-supported campaigns orchestrated by the Leftist-progressive political parties in the United States and in Israel, is the goal of making the coming elections in both countries a binary choice, an either us or them choice, an issue of black or white, vote for reality or vote for the illusion.

Netanyahu’s supporters credit him with keeping Israel relatively safe and prosperous, maintaining its Jewish character and Israel as the Nation State of the Jewish People, and boosting Israel’s standing internationally. In contrast to many of his political predecessors, Netanyahu hasn’t left his mark by “winning” a war or signing a “peace accord” such as the disastrous Oslo Accords. His major achievements have been a booming economy with prosperity trickling down benefitting all sectors of the population, combating Iran’s nuclear program which is considered an existential threat on Israel–responding by covertly striking weapons shipments to Israel’s enemies – and by building a massive border fence to stop the flow of illegal African migrants. Netanyahu is perceived as being a politician who speaks the language of the people, is on their side, and they watch his back. His imperfections are the people’s imperfections.

Trump’s supporters credit him with singlehandedly bringing American pride back into the mainstream. Trump’s political message of “Making America Great Again” has been wholly adopted by a majority of Americans as their message too. Since the Trump election, America has experienced an economic boom unseen for decades, unemployment has reached low levels unseen for half a century including the lowest level of unemployment among Black Americans. The opioid epidemic has seen, for a first time in 30 years, a 5% drop in overdose deaths.

Executive directives and a demand for accountability by the Pharmaceutical industry has resulted in lower drug prices of medication. The “Wall” and Trump’s efforts to restrict the chaos of unrestricted flow of illegal immigrants on the Southern border have proven effective and are serving the interests of the American public. Trump is perceived as a blunt leader who cuts through to the people, who speaks their language, and the public listen to him. Trump is not associated with the liberal elite that tell the American public what to say and what to think and how to vote.

Both support sustainable equality. Both promote economic policies that reinvigorate the key elements of a healthy public-private partnership, empowering the private sector to create more real jobs, supporting a more responsible capitalism that is necessary for growth.

Both President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu build excitement and passion in their respective general public, dominating the public arena and the public discourse.

The electronic and printed media in the United States and in Israel have hyped up their reporting of both Trump and Netanyahu to levels of a hysterical frenzy, creating a loss of credibility and a general public that has tuned them out. The public associate the hyped up media as an extension of the liberal/progressive left that has always patronized and treated the general public as unable to decide for themselves as they are perceived by the left as lacking any true intellectual depth.

Both use the non-stop ridicule of the media in collusion with opposing political opponents to expose the hypocrisy of the left/progressive agenda who have nothing real to offer the voting public except a childish and unconvincing vision of what American or Israel should be in the future. Both President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu focus on national unity and the betterment of their respective people.

The media and the liberal progressive left will warn the public, as we approach the election period, against what philosopher Max Weber has claimed, that the West–meaning the “uninformed” general public–has always been vulnerable to: Demagoguery, Charisma and Celebrity, which have often mattered more than ideas.

They will claim that the liberty-loving public, intrinsically fearful of an unrestrained radical socialistic system, has always been liable to exploitation by charismatic conservative leaders. They will remind us all of Machiavelli’s The Prince, and the amoral charlatans desirous only for power and why in politics, oratory always mattered. They will bring up Cicero’s warning, that eloquence divorced from wisdom can destroy a country. They will warn us that we should be wary of George Orwell’s warning of totalitarianism. They will quote Hanna Arendt who has said, that between anarchic arbitrariness and the “fantastically fictitious consistency of an ideology,” people will often choose the latter. That’s “not because they are stupid or wicked,” she said, but because it gives the holder of an ideology intellectual security and sometimes escape, providing an illusion of meaning and a sense of self.

Both in the United States and in Israel; the silent majority, the middle class, and all those that reject the condescending attitude of the liberal/progressive elite will reject their warnings and their political message of why only they can prevent the destruction of “our country” as we know it. The liberal/progressive left will find itself, whether in the coming Israeli elections or in the 2020 elections in the United States, to be overwhelmingly rejected by the public and sent back to all their respective constituencies as false political prophets having nothing to show for their efforts and losing any semblance of credibility in their eyes of those that believed their deceitful promises to bring about change and their illusions.
