From the Writings of Rabbi Meir Kahane, ztk’l–Letter to a Secular Jewish Nationalist

My Dear Friend,

There is nothing special about a Jewish tank or jet plane, nothing special about an independent state of your own with a Parliament, Prime Minister, national airline and social-economic-political problems, all nations have them. There is nothing special about a scientific institute, universities and lawyers, physicians and sanitation men; all nations have them. But no nation has Torah except the Jewish people, and that is the difference. The only one. Photo Credit: Shutterstock

I note that you, as so many others who are good Jewish nationalists and devoted to the Jewish people and the state, have been puzzled and critical of some of my actions and policies. Because I sincerely respect you and want you to understand what I have done and intend to do, I think the time is long overdue for you and your colleagues to understand my thinking and the ideology that led me to do the things that you so approved of in the past as well as those you may not agree with today.

There really is a great deal of misunderstanding – I might add basic and almost total in some cases – of the REAL, things that the Jewish defense League has done and more important WHY – at least for me – they were done. Most people join a movement not so much out of ideology, but out of community of interest they think exists between them and the movement. Thus, when the Jewish Defense League protected Jewish teachers in New York City from anti-Semites, it was both praised and joined by many Jewish teachers. The latter did this, not because they agreed with the JDL in its entirety or even in most of its views – INDEED THEY HAD NOT THE SLIGHTEST KNOWLEDGE THAT THERE WAS AN IDEOLOGY. They did not care about ideology or anything else except their own narrow interests, and the result was not only that they thus misunderstood the movement, but as soon as the crisis for THEM was over they simply dropped out, not caring that other Jews – not teachers – still suffered and had to be helped.

These teachers were not interested in the fact that JDL was an organization with a philosophy of Ahavat Yisroel, the need to both love and to aid Jews in distress wherever they might be. (And that only because of this philosophy did JDL – many non-teachers – take up the fight for them.) These Jewish teachers were as disinclined to suffer for Soviet Jews or Jews of Arab lands as non-teachers were. The ONLY thing that drove them to join and be active in the movement was their OWN suffering. The moment their problem was relieved, there existed for them – as for most other Jews – no other problems. And what I say about teachers can, of course, be written about all the others who came into the JDL because of personal interests; because THEIR neighborhood needed protection of THEIR child’s school was plagued by crime. Self-interest, not Ahavat Yisroel, was the hallmark of most members, and the self-evident truth of this basically selfish motive is seen in the question asked me in every city which has not JDL chapter: “But why do we need a JDL chapter here, WE have no problems.”

You, as a sincere Jewish nationalist who does not fall into this category, can therefore understand what I write about and why we could find among even some of the JDL leadership those who, when we began the struggle for Soviet Jewry, said: “But our first interest is the protection of American Jews.” You can understand how these kind of people failed to grasp the JDL essential that Ahavat Yisroel means looking upon ALL JEWS as one people, as brothers, and that there is no difference between Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Damascus and Riga.

And so, you in Israel sang our praises and defended us when we acted violently against the Soviets and broke the law in defense of Jews who suffered at the hands of anti-Semites. For you understood the philosophical and ideological basis of our movement and you did not make the mistake of self-interested teacher, merchant or housewife. But even you do not understand, really.

“When I helped to found the JDL and called to people to love Jews so much that they should be prepared to climb barricades for them, fight physically for them, perhaps sit in jail for them, why in the world did I care about some Jew in Leningrad or Damascus more than some Zulu in South Africa? Only because Ahavat Yisroel follows directly from the special quality of the Jewish people – the DIVINE nation – each of whose members partakes of that divine quality and is my brother MORE than other peoples” – Rabbi Meir Kahane, ztl’l

We come to Israel and puzzled, you ask: What you did in the Exile for Soviet Jews and for poor Jews in troubled neighborhoods was magnificent and no one can fault you for that. But what need is there for a Jewish DEFENSE league in Israel? After all, we have an army and a police here! And why do you waste your time on unimportant issues such as fighting the missionaries and placing a mezuzah on the Sha’ar Shchem (Damascus Gate)? And why do you plan a yeshiva and a school for Jewish education here when there are others who do this? Your contribution is in the Exile where you can defend Jews, and the Meir Kahane whom we knew of there is no longer the same Meir Kahane, today.

I hear the words and the criticism and realize that just as the simple Jewish teacher backed the Jewish Defense League while not having the slightest idea what it was all about, so do you, my much more knowledgeable Jewish nationalist friend, fail to grasp the essentials of the JDL and why I, at least, helped to bring it into being.

You see, my secular nationalist friend, unlike you, I see nothing at all very special or logical about nationalism, per se. I see nothing very rational about setting up boundaries and a barrier separate governments, armies, parliaments, economics, exchange rates and languages. If anything, nationalism is a barrier to world brotherhood and one of the major fomenters of conflict and war. If I were a secular nationalist I would be hard put to explain why Jews should remain separate and not assimilate and I would struggle for a rational explanation of Jewish behavior – stubborn and obstinate – over two millennia of exile as they suffered every conceivable manner of persecution and yet, refused to disappear.

There is only one reason why Jews should be different, and that is the very special difference, the uniqueness that makes them separate and different from all other peoples. ONLY the election of Israel, only the concept of a Chosen people, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation; only the “Ata b’chartanu, You have chosen us from all the nations”: only the “hamavdil beyn kodesh l’chol, He who differentiates between and separates between holy and profane, between Israel and the nations”; only the need to be different, apart and separate NOT BECAUSE OF SOME VAGUE LANGUAGE OR HISTORICAL DIFFERNCE but because of the distinct uniqueness of Torah and the commandments as a DIVINE decree – only this gives any validity to the Jew remaining alive as a distinct entity.

And so, when I helped to found the JDL and called to people to love Jews so much that they should be prepared to climb barricades for them, fight physically for them, perhaps sit in jail for them, why in the world did I care about some Jew in Leningrad or Damascus more than some Zulu in South Africa? Only because Ahavat Yisroel follows directly from the special quality of the Jewish people – the DIVINE nation – each of whose members partakes of that divine quality and is my brother MORE than other peoples. Without my belief in the Jews as the Chosen People of G-d, there would be not the slightest interest for me in them more than in other people.

And if you wonder why secular Jewish nationalism, that which we call Zionism, has proven to be such a disastrous failure among our youth in Israel; and if it bothers you that the youth questions the basic axioms that, to you are truth incarnate, going so far as to dispute the right of the Jews to Israel and even joining an Arab spy ring; and if you are disturbed at the fact that most Israelis have little ties to world Jewry, and so many would like very much to leave the country and make a great deal of money elsewhere; and if the Jew in Israel looks more and more like any other people and feels nothing special about himself and his state – learn an important lesson.

Secular Jewish nationalism – no more than any other kind – can give no rational reason to a sensitive and intelligent young person to see anything special about his people or his state. The beginning of the moral and spiritual crumbling of secular nationalism is all around us to see – both in the exile and here, in Israel. Your love of Jews stems from nostalgia, the fact that you were raised either in Europe or amidst the revolutionary war against the British. Because of this, you either avoid the contradictions or are incapable of seeing them. The young Israeli or the young assimilated Jew in the exile, however, is not a Jew by habit or nostalgia. He asks the logical questions and gets no logical answers – because you are not capable of giving them to him and NO SECULAR NATIONIST IS.

And so perhaps you can begin to understand why the problem of Christian missionaries is, to me, just as important as that of Soviet Jewry. For to me, they are both the same problem, the question of keeping Jews Jewish. And thus you can see why the problem of Jewish SPIRITUAL DEFENSE in Israel is just as important as PHYSICAL DEFENSE elsewhere. I want to save the Jew physically in order that he, someday, be able to live as a good spiritual Jew. Without that, I would be prepared to put the Jew together with the black, Puerto Rican, Chicano, Zulu, Latin American, Mestizo and all the rest.

I love Jews more than any other people – not because I was born a Jew, but because the Jew, unlike any other peoples, was born for a Chosen destiny. If we believe that, then the Jew is everything; if we do not – he is no better, or worse, no more deserving of our attention, than anyone else.

Personal Recollections of a Life Changing Trip to Africa with the SCC

0
SCC Young Adults at Entebbe Airport, famously known for the Israeli Defense Forces' "Operation Thunderbolt."

By: Charles Chakkalo

The members of the Sephardic Community Center were taken aback by the gratitude of the students at the Bukalika primary school

“Mwene dala asangala khubakeni basangale,” hundreds of men, women and children with cattle, bare feet, and smiles chanted in greeting us. This song translates to “let the happiness our guests came with stay with them when they exit.” This even reminded me of the Debarim 28:6, “You shall be blessed when you come, and you shall be blessed when you depart.”

In June 2019, I had the distinct honor of partaking in a life changing trip. Facilitated and supervised by the incredibly dedicated board and staff at the Sephardic Community Center, a group of young adults partook in community-wide fundraiser to provide clean water for the village of Bumayi, Uganda. In conjunction with the Israeli charity, Innovation Africa, we worked to install a solar powered pump to extract water from aquifers beneath the Bumayi ground and enjoy the glory of clean water.

On our mission we visited three towns. The first, Tororo, that had abysmal water supply, and nearly no aid. The second, Bumayi, where we crowd-funded a clean water supply, and a third, Bukalikha, that had a clean water supply for some time. Each of these towns greeted us about the same way. Cheers, songs, and “sangala.”

The Jewish community of Putti in their newly constructed synagogue by iAfrica. After praying Shaharit, we partook in the installation of the synagogue’s mezuzot.

While walking the first town, I had my first exposure to the bareness of sub-Saharan Africa. With each step my Reeboks protected feet from hit the ground. Next to me, bare, callous, and worn feet did the same. I stopped and looked at the bare feet around me as I stepped on stems and branches of all kinds. I considered the probable burning temperatures of the stone these bare feet were standing on. This alone made me realize something they probably never will, a thankfulness for shoes.

After seeing the contamination and dangerous water source of the first town, we saw the same at the second. The difference here being that we brought a solution. In direct opposite to the first town, we brought life-saving, thirst-quenching, and sanitary water to the second. We brought the divine miracle of an Israeli technology to this village, Bumayi. Bumayi made their thankfulness more than clear, shouting, cheering and sharing their wishes of “sangala.”

One of four communal faucets being opened, introducing the concept of plumbing and clean running water to the people of Bumayi for the first time.

Our first stop in Bumayi was what they once called their water source. We passed by a blissful woman carefully drying maze that she will soon be able to turn into bread with clean water. Following us were hundreds of children and toddlers. As soon as the children joined our group one of our guards gave me a few colored rubber bands to gift to the kids. After not thinking much about the colored bands, I gave one to a little boy. In return he gave me a smile that spoke volumes to me. “A colored rubber band,” I thought, “all it takes for that smile was a colored rubber band; now what would it take to get the same in most of the developed world?”

We reached the soon to be abandoned water source crawling and oozing with algae. Three women were elected to speak to the process of using this water source. One woman often faced an angry husband who, despite her returning with water, did not believe that she was getting water the entire time she was absent from the home. The third woman described how scorpions and snakes lurking in this water source would scare her off from bringing home water. She even went on to describe how children frequently lose their lives getting water from sources like these because the water is covering quicksand.

But the second woman’s testimony took my heart more than all else on this trip. On her back was her child, so used to seeing and being by this water source. After affirming of all else her villagers had to say about the struggle for clean water, she showed us hers. She swung her child around and showed us their back filled with boils, pimples, and rashes contracted by the child because of being washed with this contaminated water. She then fell to her knees. “A sign of maximal thanks,” according to our translator, then praised us for bringing Israeli technology of clean water to Bumayi.

Final installation of Lwaboba Day School’s solar panels, now allowing students to enjoy the benefits of electricity, enlightenment and illumination.

My head spun, my mind raced, my breath shortened. In front of us was this woman who was no more human than I, on her knees in grace of our presence. Sure, bringing a village in need of access to clean water the resources to do so is nice, but to the point of kneeling to us for doing so? I did not know what to think. Was she overestimating the gravity of what we brought? Was I underestimating the same? The truth was that I underestimated how our water project helped this mother. In this case, clean water helps her be a better mother, caring for her children better and in raising them healthier. I saw that allowing this mother to better her children’s conditions was invaluable; something unfathomable absent visiting Bumayi.

We celebrated and turned on the water pump. Again, singing and dancing, with sangala filling the air. Standing next to a little boy, I opened my mouth and drank the water being sprinkled all over, showing him it is safe to drink, an idea clearly foreign to him. For the first time he drank running water free of worrying from infection.

The welcoming wishes of sangala by the Bumayi villagers.

The giving continued through the following day when we visited Lwaboba Day School. After, again, being welcomed by cheers, dances and wishes of sangala, we saw what they called a classroom. The walls to this classroom were deteriorating, much like the books and paper they had. The ground they sat on while in their classes was not in much better condition. The classroom’s condition was so poor that when we brought desks for their classroom use, I did not know which way to face them. Conventionally, desks face the chalkboard. In this case, the chalkboard was so worn that I could not identify it as a separate segment of the classroom wall. I then turned the desks to face the “chalkboard.”

In addition to desks, we helped install solar panels to provide the school with power. In some ways this installation touched me more than the opening of the Bumayi water supply did. Tens of hundreds of teachers, students and administrators for as far as the eye can see over the baron Ugandan land were congregating around a light bulb. The light bulb was to be powered by the panels we just installed. We shouted, “Three! Two! One!” The bulb lit up, celebrations broke out, and nothing but smiles took people’s faces. The light illuminated more than the classrooms but the spirits of all involved in this school’s activities. The thought of having class that is not by candlelight is now a reality. I thought to myself, tens of hundreds of people are dancing over the illumination of a light bulb, Edison was probably the only one with a near equivalent reaction.

Leading up to my trip, and even following it, people often asked me, why Uganda? Joey Tawil, the Center’s CEO, concisely highlighted why when addressing our group on the trip: “Charity begins at home, but it doesn’t end there.” But for me personally, one of many reasons included the following. In my May 2014 graduation address to the Yeshivah of Flatbush community, I wished for my fellow graduates to go out there “and not just to change the world, but to change your world.” A unique opportunity came along to change my world and to מת(ק)(כ)ן עולם as the Aleinu prayer teaches us. I seized the opportunity and surely did my best in bringing the glory of God’s blessing of Israeli innovation to the impoverished lives of Uganda. Not only is there no price too high for changing our world but in making a Kiddush Hashem.

Bill Barr’s Ire Sparked Over “Serious Irregularities” at MCC; Claims Epstein Was Not Secured

U.S. Attorney General William Barr said that his Justice Department has already found “serious irregularities” at the federal prison in which disgraced billionaire Jeffrey Epstein apparently committed suicide.

By: David Reiter

In interviews on Monday, Barr professed to being angered by the knowledge that staff members at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York had “failed to adequately secure this prisoner.”

Though he avoided giving details, Barr did confirm at a conference in New Orleans that investigations by FBI personnel and the Justice Department inspectors general are ongoing. He also made it clear that the investigation into sexual improprieties did not die with Epstein. Anyone who may have played a role, he said, “should not rest easy.”

“Let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein,” said Barr. “Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. The victims deserve justice, and they will get it.”

“Speaking to law enforcement officials in New Orleans, the country’s top law enforcement official said he “was appalled . . . and, frankly, angry” to learn of the Metropolitan Correctional Center’s “failure to adequately secure”Epstein,” reported the Washington Post. “Lawmakers also demanded answers from federal officials. The Democratic and Republican leaders of the House Judiciary Committee on Monday addressed a letter to acting Bureau of Prisons director Hugh Hurwitz demanding answers to questions about Epstein’s time in federal detention and asserting that Epstein’s death “demonstrates severe miscarriages of or deficiencies in inmate protocol and has allowed the deceased to ultimately evade facing justice.”

Not that anyone actually expected the case to end with Epstein’s life.

“Jeffrey Epstein is dead. But the criminal investigation that led to the sex-trafficking charges against him is not,” reported the New York Times. “Federal prosecutors and F.B.I. agents who built the case against Mr. Epstein will turn their attention to people whom his accusers have said participated in a scheme that dates back more than a decade and involved the sexual exploitation of dozens of underage girls. That could include a circle of close associates whom accusers said helped recruit, train and coerce them into catering to Mr. Epstein, a wealthy financier.”

That same suggestion – that more evidence will be turned up, and accusations made – appeared in the pages of the Wall Street Journal, as well. “The death of Jeffrey Epstein in a federal jail sparked a multipronged investigation into the apparent suicide of the financier accused of sexual abuse and raised the pressure to prosecute his associates in his absence. Mr. Epstein’s death puts the focus on people who allegedly helped him recruit young women for sex trafficking. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan pledged Saturday to continue their investigation, and a growing cache of evidence could lead to other targets.”

Bullet Proof Doors Installed for 1st Time in NYC at Bklyn Jewish Girls School

In a sign of the lamentable times in which we live, a Crown Heights yeshiva for girls has become the first in New York City to install metal security doors.

By: Josh Kosovsky

The goal: protection from the kind of active shooter nightmares and antisemitic acts that have become all too common.

The Bnos Menachem school will eventually be fitted with 90 such doors. The work is being done by an Israeli company called Remo Security Doors. It has already installed nearly 50 security doors in Harrington Park, N.J., public schools, and still more in an estimated 50 Jewish schools and synagogues in Brooklyn.

“The 150-pound classroom doors, made of galvanized steel, are fortified inside by metal bars, the company says. The doors can be locked from the inside with a thumb turn, and no electricity is required. Each has a bullet-resistant window,” reported the New York Post. “Company president Omer Barnes said a bullet may penetrate the door, but a shooter could not get in.”

Aside from the actual safety that the doors will provide, it is the absence of stress and anxiety that the school’s administrators are trying to achieve.

The cost of the project, according to the Post’s reporting will be $225,000. A $150,000 Homeland Security grant from the state will help defray the cost.

“I think it’s great,” one mother told the Post. “It’s a very secure feeling to know that there’s a security measure and that they’re really thinking about the safety of the children.”

In June, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes (OPHC) will be embedded in the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. The opening was months ahead of the November effective date established by the City Council law that originally created the office.

The new office will coordinate responses to hate crimes across City agencies, including the NYPD, City Commission on Human Rights, Department of Education, Department of Probation, Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and District Attorney’s Offices, taking a holistic approach to preventing hate crimes, developing and coordinating community-driven prevention strategies to address biases fueling crimes, and fostering reconciliation and healing for victims.

The Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes will also support NYPD training, launch support programs for victims, improve coordination on hate crime reporting and work with affected groups to make sure victims come forward.

“In New York City, we celebrate and uphold our differences and reject any attempt to hate or divide,” said de Blasio. “The Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes will work to root out hate and make our streets safer, which is why we’re moving up the timeline and opening the office months ahead of schedule. We will never stand idly by while our fellow New Yorkers are targeted because of their race, religion, sexual orientation or any other quality that makes them who they are.”

Trump Rips “The Mooch” on Twitter; Calls Former WH Communications Chief “Totally Incapable”

President Donald Trump has publicly ripped former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci on Twitter.

By: Salvatore Enrigama

”Anthony Scaramucci, who was quickly terminated (11 days) from a position that he was totally incapable of handling, now seems to do nothing but television as the all time expert on ’President Trump,’” Trump Tweeted on Saturday.

The president added, “Like many other so-called television experts, he knows very little about me other than the fact that this Administration has probably done more than any other Administration in its first 2 1/2 years of existence. Anthony, who would do anything to come back in, should remember the only reason he is on TV, and it’s not for being the Mooch!”

Not surprisingly, Scaramucci also took to Twitter in response. ”For the last 3 years I have fully supported this President. Recently he has said things that divide the country in a way that is unacceptable. So I didn’t pass the 100% litmus test,” the high-profile hedge fund manager pointed out. “Eventually he turns on everyone and soon it will be you and then the entire country.”

He added, “To those asking, “what took so long?” You’re right. I tried to see best in @realDonaldTrump based on private interactions and select policy alignment. But his increasingly divisive rhetoric – and damage it’s doing to fabric of our society – outweighs any short-term economic gain.”

Scaramucci appeared last week on the TV panel show “Real Time with Bill Maher,” whose host is notorious for badmouthing conservatives. Among his comments: “I do try to defend [Trump], but there are certain things he’s done that are absolutely indefensible.”

On MSNBC last week, Scaramucci criticized Trump for personally meeting with victims of the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. He said, ”Maybe he’ll tweet something negative about somebody for saying he didn’t do well, but the facts are he did not do well on the trip because if the trip is being made about him and not the demonstration of compassion and love and caring and empathy for those people, then it becomes a catastrophe for him, the administration, and it’s also a bad reflection on the country.”

The mass shootings in Ohio and Texas that killed 31 people “have fueled criticism that Trump hasn’t done enough to stem gun violence and has instead fostered extremism,” Yahoo reported. “Trump visited hospitals in each city last week, excluding press from those visits but releasing campaign-style photos and videos. Scaramucci said in a cable television interview Thursday that Trump drew negative news coverage of his trip because he made the hospital visits about himself rather than about comforting the gun massacre victims.”

“So, look, the president didn’t do well on the trip. He probably would be mad at somebody for saying that,” he said on MSNBC.

Bloomberg Confronts Elizabeth Warren on Mouthing Off About the “1 Percent”

Elizabeth Warren says repeatedly that she doesn’t care for the one percent.

By: Zak Haverstraw

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is part of that one percent, and he doesn’t care for Warren’s mouthing off.

“If my company wouldn’t be successful, we wouldn’t be here today,” Bloomberg told Warren backstage at an Everytown for Gun Safety event in Des Moines this past weekend. “So enough with this stuff.”

“Billionaire Bloomberg founded Everytown and largely pays its bills. He used that role Saturday to take the stage alongside almost every Democratic presidential hopeful to give a speech targeting President Trump,” reported the New York Post. “Bloomberg recalled how the president said after the February 2018 Parkland High School shooting in Florida that he supported stronger background checks. “And then the NRA told him to drop it, so he did — immediately,” Bloomberg said.”

Bloomberg has been hectoring the president for allegedly caving in to the National Rifle Association. “He didn’t have the guts to oppose the NRA then and now, he faces the same choice,” Bloomberg told an audience. “So now the president can either find the backbone to stand up to the NRA or once again he can bow down to the NRA and kiss Wayne’s ring — or maybe kiss something else.”

The billionaire and one-time presidential aspirant added, “There’s been a lot of discussion about whether President Trump bears some responsibility for what happened in El Paso. Of course he does. Words matter. Words have consequences…. It’s not just criminals and psychopaths who are gunning down people. Dealing with them is hard enough. But now, more than ever: It’s white supremacists trying to mass murder African-Americans. It’s xenophobes trying to mass murder Latinos. It’s Islamophobes trying to mass murder Muslims. It’s homophobes trying to mass murder the LGBTQ community. It’s anti-Semites trying to mass murder Jews. And it’s other hate-filled people who see automatic weapons as a way to advance their poisonous ideology.”

Interestingly, Bloomberg’s name came up days ago when former Trump advisor Steve Bannon was being interviewed by Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business. “I said this last week, Maria, I don’t see anybody on that stage right now that can take President Trump one on one. I pride myself, he’s called me his star pupil, his top pupil, I’ve been studying this thoroughly and I don’t care what the polls say on Biden. Joe Biden is not going to be able to stand up to Donald Trump…. I think you got to watch guys like Hillary Clinton, Bloomberg, Michelle Obama, a whole raft of potential that they should look at very closely. Because the Democrats’ number one focus is to defeat Donald Trump, so I’m not so sure there’s a candidate up there right now, certainly, nobody on that stage takes on Trump one on one.”

Deconstructing Where American Media Has Gone Wrong

0
In just the few weeks since its May 21 release, Mark R. Levin’s Unfreedom of the Press has been perched atop The New York Times nonfiction bestseller list.

Conservative radio and TV commentator Mark Levin’s “Unfreedom of the Press” has been perched atop “The New York Times” nonfiction bestseller list since its release—an irony of sorts since he’s tackling the Gray Lady’s internal ills

By: Deborah Fineblum

You just know that in the place where irony is calibrated, the needle on the meter must be going crazy.

Over at the newspaper that boasts it prints “all the news that fits,” they have no choice but to put this damning book on their bestseller list.

In just the few weeks since its May 21 release, Mark R. Levin’s Unfreedom of the Press has been perched atop The New York Times nonfiction bestseller list. It’s a clear sign that this book, which takes on “America’s newspaper of record,” is as popular as the five other books penned by the syndicated columnist, radio personality and TV commentator.

In these 258 pages, Levin, who is also an attorney, beams a spotlight on a problem that threatens at the very least the way Americans view their media. As he shows, the infection in the heart of modern-day media is a threat to one of the main pillars of American democracy: a free and objective press.

Long known for his take-no-prisoners conservative view of the world, Levin the persona takes a back seat here, replaced by Levin the historian, researcher and analyst. He painstakingly demonstrates that by abandoning their responsibility to report impartially, contemporary journalists cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

“The press is eroding from within, not from government oppression or suppression,” he writes, “not by President Trump’s hand, but by their own self-censorship, group-think, bias by omission, and passing off opinion, propaganda, pseudo-events and outright lies as news. … A self-perpetuating and reinforcing mindset has replaced independent and impartial thinking.”

‘A breakdown in integrity’

It was only a century ago, he writes, that the American press began to see its role as objective truth-teller; earlier, during the “party-press era,” it tended to promote one party or another.

But in the past, newspapers were fairly evenly divided between political parties, according to Levin. Whereas, he says, “today’s news outlets are overwhelmingly supportive of the Democratic party and hostile to the Republican party—particularly conservatives—and, these days, virulently antagonistic to President Donald Trump, his supporters and his policies.”

“Even the tone of the press reporting on President Trump has reached a level of invective rarely seen in politics,” adds Levin, who backs up the argument with seven pages of excerpts reflecting the overt hatred of many mainstream journalists, an attitude he calls “media-pack malevolency.”

Indeed, Levin makes a clear case that journalists and news outlets, even as they fiercely defend their right to freedom of speech, instead “serve as filters attempting to enforce uniformity of thought … centered on the progressive ideology and agenda. Issues, events, groups and individuals that do not fit the narrative are dismissed or diminished.”

It’s a breakdown in journalist integrity that was foreseen long ago, he reports. During World War II, Time and Life magazines publisher Henry Luce convened a Commission on Freedom of the Press (aka the Hutchins Commission). Its conclusions remain a cautionary tale that continues to haunt America more than 70 years later.

The modern press, the report said, “can play up or down the news and its significance, foster and feed emotions, create complacent fictions and blind spots, misuse great words and uphold empty slogans. Their scope and power are increasing each day as new instruments become available to them. These instruments can spread lies faster and farther than our forefathers dreamed when they enshrined the freedom of the press in our Constitution.”

It seems that this fearful scenario of the press using an ever-expanding bully pulpit (back then, they couldn’t foresee the reach of the Internet) to attack a common enemy has come to pass. “The media’s progressive ideology and Democratic Party bias are in full bloom as evidenced by their frenzied obsession with ‘getting’ President Trump,” Levin writes. “And, conversely, their disinterest and laxity respecting the roles of the Clinton campaign and the DNC, as well as the part played by the Obama FBI, Department of Justice and intelligent agencies, to thwart the Trump campaign and presidency.”

Why was the media so determined to use its power to unseat Trump even before he moved into Pennsylvania Avenue? Levin chalks it up in part to “their outrage over his electoral victory,” which the reader can interpret as “How could that ‘other’ America, the beer-swilling bowlers, defeat us, the liberal intelligentsia who should be calling the shots?”

‘Wildly absurd and hysterical assertions’

Indeed, Levin brings to the fore many questionable moves—legal and sexual—by previous presidents that were consistently overlooked by the press. Their kid-glove handling of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, in particular, he maintains, was due in no small part to the fact that the two of them had “defeated Republican candidates who were much hated by the media”—namely, Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater.

Yet despite the persistently negative press coverage (an estimated 98 percent of news written about Trump is critical), the president “does not pose a threat to freedom of press,” writes Levin. Unlike with some other presidents, there have been no executive orders, FCC shutdowns of critical news outlets, or criminal charges against unfriendly journalists.

“Nevertheless, the constant media refrain is trying to convince the American people of a demonstrably false narrative, that President Trump has launched an unprecedented battering on freedom of the press … is media propaganda and a media-concocted pseudo-event,” he writes.

Often typified by what Levin describes as “wildly absurd and hysterical assertions,” the media has compared the president to such despots as Hitler and Stalin, and regularly describes him as a neo-Nazi white supremacist, mentally unhinged racist, and sometimes, even a psychopath.

Levin argues that journalists asking mental-health professionals to diagnose whether or not the president is mentally ill is particularly insidious and destructive.

It’s “perhaps the most inflammatory, scurrilous and pernicious allegation that can be made against a mentally healthy individual, but especially a president of the United States, as the purpose is to destroy his reputation with the public and foreign leaders and make governing as difficult as possible,” he writes.

One notable example: The accusation that the president colluded with the Russians—a charge Levin traces to the Hillary Clinton campaign, which was then snapped up by the media. Soon, the Democrats demanded a special counsel be appointed to investigate, cheered on by a blood-thirsty press. “In the end the collusion story and news scam turned out to be biggest pseudo-event perpetuated against the American people by the Democratic Party-press in modern times,” he concludes. Even after investigators could find no evidence that the president had ever colluded with the Russians.

Citing The New York Times shameful underreporting of the Holocaust and anti-Israel track record, a new low was reached last fall, Levin reports, when the paper published something previously considered verboten: an anonymous opinion piece—in this case, an anti-Trump screed supposedly written by a disgruntled presidential staffer.

Levin adds that anti-Israel bias at the Times and other American media became so egregious last year that U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman wrote these words when escalating Arab attacks on Israelis followed the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem: “The next day the liberal media vilified everyone associated with the embassy move and glorified the poor Hamas terrorists.”

The damage goes well beyond prejudicial reporting, says Levin, who’s concerned that “when the media function as a propaganda tool for a single political party and ideology, they not only destroy their own purpose but threaten the existence of a free republic … should not ideology be reserved for the opinion-editorial pages of newspapers or the commentary segments of broadcasts?” he asks. “Whatever happened to ‘professional journalism’ and the promise or at least suggestion that the press ought to pursue the objective truth in the gathering and reporting of news?”

Instead, the membrane separating the media from the left has never been as permeable as it is right now, he adds. “What of the incestuous relations between journalists and the last Democratic administration?” he asks, citing an Atlantic report that at least 24 journalists were hired for jobs in the Obama administration.

One question that arises: Is the American public buying the party line the media is selling? One recent study (Gallup, October 2018) indicates that such one-sided coverage is further polarizing the country. The media credibility gap between Republicans and Democrats, now at an unprecedented 58 percent, has never been wider, with Republicans generally agreeing with the president that the press unfairly covers his administration and Democrats seeing the media as using its influence as “primarily checking the president’s power.”

And the reader is left with a second question as well, one that no one—not Levin, and certainly not the editor of The New York Times—can answer: Can the “ideologically driven press” waken from its slumber and return to its job of seeing and reporting both sides of an issue free of their own bias?

Levin is not optimistic. You can almost smell the air of resignation hanging over these words of his: “If newsrooms and journalists do not act forthwith and with urgency to ‘fundamentally transform’ their approach to journalism which sadly is highly unlikely, their credibility will continue to erode and may well reach a point soon where it is irreparably damaged with a large portion of the citizenry—and rightly so,” he writes on the final page. “The media will not only marginalize themselves, but they will continue to be the greatest threat to freedom of the press today—not President Trump or his administration, but the current practitioners of what used to be called journalism.” (JNS.org)

The Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) and the Israel Space Agency (ISA) of the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology have joined up to lead an international project to launch a state-of-the-art satellite that will probe Space’s secrets.

Edited by: JV Staff

Weighing just 160 kg, the cutting-edge scientific satellite will be built in Israel over the next four years, with a projected launch date of 2023.

The satellite, known as ULTRASAT, will carry a telescope designed to observe the Universe as never seen before and will operate in the ultraviolet range of light that is normally invisible to humans.

“This unique configuration will help us answer some of the big questions in astrophysics,” says the Weizmann Institute’s Professor Eli Waxman, ULTRASAT’s principle investigator.

The satellite will seek to determine the formation process of dense neutron stars that merge and emit gravitational waves, how supermassive black holes rule their neighborhoods, how stars explode, where the heavy elements in the Universe come from, the properties of stars that could have habitable planets and more.

The WIS and the ISA recently agreed to commence work on the project this coming September while seeking to secure the budget for the entire project. The German DESY Research Center of the Helmholtz Association has already pledged its support for the initiative. Negotiations are also underway with other major space agencies to get ULTRASAT off the ground. The project is expected to cost some $70 million over a projected four years of detailed planning, construction and launch.

The ULTRASAT’s construction in Israel will put “Israel – and Israeli scientists and engineers – at the forefront of a global movement to explore the Universe with small, affordable satellites,” said ISA’s director Avi Blasberger.

“A small country – and a small satellite – can produce big results, even in exploring the wonders of distant outer space,” said WIS president Professor Daniel Zajfman. (TPS)

On Friday evening, a Brooklyn man allegedly struck one Jewish man with a stick and sprayed mace in the face of another, telling them “Hitler should have finished you off.”

By: WIN Staff

A 39-year-old Brooklyn man named Kenya Dean was arrested over the weekend for an anti-Semitic attack that took place on Friday evening in the borough’s Crown Heights neighborhood, immediately prior to the beginning of the Jewish sabbath.

Dean allegedly sprayed a Jewish man with a substance identified as mace, according to COLlive, a New York Jewish news website.

At the beginning of the attack, Dean allegedly accosted the victim, hollering, “You Jews, Hitler should have finished you off,” COLlive reported.

Dean is also accused of breaking a glass bottle during the altercation, according to police, in addition to using a stick to strike a 62-year-old bystander.

NBC New York reported that Dean was arrested and charged with hate-crime assault, harassment and criminal possession of a weapon.

In response to news of Dean’s arrest, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued a statement expressing “deep appreciation to the NYPD for swiftly apprehending the suspect.”

In 2018, the ADL recorded a 55% spike in anti-Semitic assaults in New York, in comparison to 2017.

“We are deeply disturbed by this alleged anti-Semitic assault in Brooklyn Friday evening,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL NY/NJ Regional Director. “The severity of this incident, which involved hurling anti-Semitic insults and subsequently attacking worshippers with pepper spray and a stick as they were getting ready for Shabbat, is deeply shocking. We are grateful for the swift action by NYPD in apprehending the individual allegedly responsible for this attack. This assault underscores the urgent need for communities in Brooklyn to come together and stop these profoundly troubling hate incidents from happening in our city.” (WIN)

Sponsors of Trump Fundraisers in Hamptons Take Heat from Opponents; POTUS Brings in $12M in One Day

0

The receipts are in and according to published reports, President Trump picked up a cool $12 million smackers on Friday at two fundraisers in the tony Hamptons that were organized by Trump Victory. Social media is abuzz and it appears that public donors to the re-election campaign of the nation’s 45th president are receiving intense pressure from the public, with threats abounding to boycott their businesses.

Edited by: JV Staff

This time it is real estate developer Stephen Ross who is in the line of vocal public scrutiny for having agreed to host a fundraiser for Trump at this Southampton home. Ross owns the Equinox Fitness Club and the indoor-cycling subsidiary, SoulCycle as well as the Miami Dolphins NFL team.

As a result of his decision to help Trump raise a substantial amount of money for his political coffers, Ross is now being subjected to threats of boycotts from celebs as well as being hit with a deluge of employee complaints. Those who are at odds with Ross are those who claim that they oppose Trump on the grounds that they perceive him to be a racist.

While the entire guest list for the Ross sponsored Hamptons fundraiser has not been made public, reports indicate that a litany of well-heeled investment and real estate executives were on hand with their checkbooks open. Speculation has grown that those who attended the event could also face potential boycotts and vocal pushback among their contemporaries for supporting Trump.

“Thanks to the unhinged mob on the left, @realDonaldTrump raised $12M today, $2M more than originally expected,” tweeted Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel at approximately 4 p.m. ET. “The support for our President is unprecedented and growing!”

The Hollywood Reporter also issued a report about a second fundraiser scheduled for Friday afternoon out in the Hamptons. This one was being sponsored at the Bridgehampton estate of Joe Farrell.

According to THR report, attendees included ousted Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly; Geraldo Rivera; major names from the New York real estate development community; McDaniel; RNC co-chairman Tommy Hicks Jr.; Trump Victory finance chairman Todd Ricketts; campaign manager Brad Parscale; Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC); Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY); Kimberly Guilfoyle; and the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

According to a Friday report on the Crain’s web site, those invited to the Hamptons fundraiser also included the two adult children of John Catsimatidis, owner of the Manhattan grocery chain Gristedes Foods Inc., and World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder, an Estée Lauder Companies Inc. heir, according to a person familiar with the invitations.

Crain’s indicated that the invitation to John Catsimatidis Jr. and Andrea Catsimatidis comes after their father—a prolific donor to both Republican and Democratic campaigns who served as a member of Hillary Clinton’s finance team during her 2008 presidential campaign—publicly declined former Vice President Joe Biden’s request for fundraising assistance earlier this year, saying he would continue to support the president.

Other invitees included K2 Advisers co-founder William Douglass, General Atlantic LLC chief executive Bill Ford, New York real estate developer Richard LeFrak, Harbor Group chief executive Michael Liebowitz, Cantor Fitzgerald chief executive Howard Lutnick, and cryptocurrency entrepreneur—and former ‘Mighty Ducks’ child actor—Brock Pierce, according to the person familiar with the invitations.

Tickets to the event ranged from $100,000 for a photo with the president and lunch to $250,000 for a package that also included a roundtable discussion with Trump.

According to a NY Post report, many large donors to the Trump re-election campaign wish to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, be they from professional and personal contacts.

“We are all in the closet,” said a boutique owner in Southampton who fears reprisals from his customers — most of them moneyed Democrats — if he speaks openly about his allegiance to Trump. “It’s like you have this disease and people want to run away from you.”
The Post reported that a builder based in Westhampton worried that his customers would boycott his services if he reveals his support of the president. “People have really strong opinions here and if you go around wearing a MAGA hat, you really need to fear physical violence,” he said, adding the anti-Trump aggression comes mostly from summer residents.

According to the Crain’s report, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills criticized Ross for hosting the event, tweeting the owner could not promote equality in sports and “then open your doors to Trump.” Celebrities including model Chrissy Teigen, actor Billy Eichner, actress Amber Tamblyn, and actress Sophia Bush tweeted they would stop going to Equinox and SoulCycle gyms.

SoulCycle Chief Executive Officer Melanie Whelan issued a statement Wednesday attempting to distance her company from the Ross fundraiser, according to the Crain’s report.

“SoulCycle in no way endorses the political fundraising event being held later this week,” Whelan said, going on to describe Ross as a “passive investor” not involved in the company’s management. “SoulCycle has nothing to do with the event and does not support it.”

Equinox issued a similar statement, saying that it had been contacted by many members expressing concerns about the fundraiser, and distancing itself from the event.

Muslims Riot on Temple Mount on Tisha B’Av; Jews Banned from Entering Holy Site

Muslims rioted on the Temple Mount and clashed with Israeli police who cleared the area.

Edited by: JV Staff

Responding to nationalist calls for riots, Muslims on the Temple Mount rioted on Sunday, forcing Israeli police to clear the area using crowd control methods, including stun grenades, Israel media reports.

Israeli Police said that, “Following nationalist calls and disturbances in the area of the Temple Mount, police forces under the command of the district commander, who were ready at the scene, dispersed the rioters in order to restore public order.”

Curiously, the riots began around 9:30 a.m. shortly after Israel announced it would not allow Jews to go up to the Temple Mount, the holiest site to the Jewish people where the First and Second Temples once stood.

Sunday marked Tisha B’Av, the Jewish memorial day for the destruction of the First and Second Temples, which according to Jewish tradition were destroyed on the same day 585 years apart.

Also falling on Sunday is the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha (or “Feast of the Sacrifice”)  which celebrates Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his son Isaac.

Hoping to avoid riots, Israel decided not to allow Jews to ascend to the site. Israel’s Channel 13, citing a senior official, reports that the decision was made at “the highest political level.”

According to a TPS report, Muslim leaders over the weekend called on Jerusalem’s Muslims to attend prayers at the Temple Mount and ensure that Jews could not visit the site during their day of national mourning.

Scores of Jews stood at the entrance to the Temple Mount for hours while fasting, waiting for the police to admit them.

The Muslims began to riot after their prayers concluded and police forces stormed the compound while using crowd control means. At least three police officers were injured.

Hamas hung a mass banner on the Temple Mount conveying their holiday greetings to the Muslim worshippers, in violation of Israel’s sovereignty at the site.

Member of Knesset Nir Barkat, formerly Jerusalem mayor called on the police to allow the Jews to visit the holy site and not surrender to Muslim violence.

Earlier in the day, a Jew walking through the Old City in Jerusalem was moderately injured by a bottle thrown at him, presumably by Muslims.

Similarly, Jews driving towards the Kotel, the Western Wall, were attacked while passing through an Arab neighborhood. Both cars were heavily damaged, but no Jews were injured in the attacks.

Channel13 reported that that Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week and pointed out that the two holidays would fall on the same day. Netanyahu said that the decision as to whether to allow Jews up to the site “would be in accordance with the assessment of the situation of the police chiefs regarding the danger to public peace,” according to the senior official, Channel 13 reports.

The United Right, an alliance of right-wing Zionist parties led by former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said, “Netanyahu’s decision to close the Temple Mount is a national disgrace. The Mount is the most sacred place for the Jewish people. We call on the Prime Minister: Change your decision.” (TPS & WIN)

Questioning Jeffrey Epstein’s Death is Not a Conspiracy Theory

0

It’s not a conspiracy theory when there’s demonstrable evidence of a conspiracy.

By: Daniel Greenfield

There’s no argument that Jeffrey Epstein got a corrupt pass from the justice systems of three states, Florida, New York, and New Mexico. Not to mention the federal government.

There’s also no real argument that Epstein’s prison sentence, in Florida, in which, despite being a sex offender, he was allowed out on “work release” to his office where he allegedly continued his pattern of inappropriate sexual behavior, before returning to his private wing.

There’s no argument that his release process was highly suspect, that he doesn’t seem to have been appropriately signed out and in, or that he was able to hire sheriff’s deputies to provide security for him, while he continued to engage in his previous behavior, while he was supposed to be in prison.

This is a conspiracy. And no one is seriously denying it.

Epstein had supposedly attempted to commit suicide. Despite being on heavy monitoring, he allegedly was able to try again and kill himself.

There’s every reason to suspect this story.

Here’s CNN, which is shouting about conspiracy theories, reporting on Epstein’s death.

Jeffrey Epstein’s cell was not regularly monitored the night he is believed to have killed himself, a source with knowledge of the accused sex trafficker’s time at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York said Sunday.

Epstein, 66, was in the special housing unit in a cell by himself when he was found dead early Saturday. He initially had a cellmate, but that person was removed for reasons unknown, the source said.

It’s protocol for inmates coming off suicide watch not to be placed alone in a cell, according to the source.

Protocol within the federal detention center’s Special Housing Unit is for guards to check on inmates every 30 minutes. If the inmates appear to be asleep, protocol states guards should make sure they’re OK, the source added.

So there are multiple violations here. But of course it’s crazy to think that there’s a conspiracy, instead of a bunch of accidents.

For “unknown” reasons, Epstein’s cellmate was removed, the guards didn’t check on him, and he wasn’t regularly monitored.

All of them involving a high-level prisoner, who had previously suborned the justice systems of three states, and of the feds, and likely possessed information about Epstein’s contacts with important political and financial figures, and, potentially, their sexual contacts with underage girls.

None of those are conspiracy theories. They’re what we know.

The conspiracy theory is that his suicide was anything other than natural.

Normally, a conspiracy theory violates Occam’s Razor, assumes facts not in evidence, and creates a fictional narrative to explain an outcome that has a rational explanation.

And maybe Epstein did just commit suicide.

But considering the background, the straightforward explanation to the resolution of a conspiracy is… a conspiracy.

I’m not going to start throwing around names. I know the Clintons are a favorite target, but after the election, they’ve lost most of their power and influence. I doubt they could kill off a goldfish. But the bottom line is that we are talking about a man who traveled in powerful circles, who managed to get a pass on the worst possible crimes, and who now has died under mysterious circumstances before he could name any names.

That’s legitimately suspicious. And extremely convenient. The story of Jeffrey Epstein should not be allowed to end here. (Front Page Mag)

North Korea Defends Ballistic Missile Tests; Says Trump Has No Problem With It

President Trump has said for weeks he has “no problem” with North Korea testing short-range missiles, insisting they are not a threat to the United States. It seems Pyongyang got the message.

By: William Gallo

North Korean state media on Sunday cited Trump’s comments, hours after rolling out what appears to be yet another new short-range missile system that threatens U.S. allies in the region.

In an article from the official Korean Central News Agency, a North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson blasted South Korea for criticizing its recent launches.

“Even the U.S. president made a remark which in effect recognized the self-defensive rights of a sovereign state, saying that it is a small missile test that a lot of countries do,” the spokesperson said.

North Korea on Saturday conducted its fifth ballistic missile launch in just more than two weeks, and seventh in the past two months. In total, North Korea has unveiled three new short-range missile systems during that period, all of which appear to be designed to evade or overwhelm U.S.-South Korean missile defenses.

On Saturday, Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently offered a “small apology” for the tests and vowed to stop the launches as soon as the current round of U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises end.

Trump says Kim sent the apology in a personal letter that blasted the U.S.-South Korean military drills.

“It was a long letter, much of it complaining about the ridiculous and expensive exercises,” Trump said in the tweet. “It was also a small apology for testing the short range missiles, and that this testing would stop when the exercises end.”

The tests violate United Nations Security Council resolutions that ban North Korea from any ballistic missile activity. But Trump, who wants to continue talks with North Korea, has shrugged off the tests.

“Kim knows that he can continue to launch these short-range missiles without consequences. He can continue to provoke, so long as he keeps emitting signals of hope to President Trump directly,” said Soo Kim, a former CIA analyst who now works at the U.S.-based Rand Corp.

“Kim’s plodding along faithfully according to plan. He’s dialing up the optempo (operational tempo) of his engagement with President Trump — remaining on our radar through these launches and friendly missives — to put the U.S. in a tighter bind,” she adds.

The U.S. and South Korea began their latest round of military exercises Monday. They are scheduled to last until Aug. 20.

The drills have been scaled back to help pave the way for talks with North Korea, which views the exercises as preparation to invade. But that has satisfied neither Trump nor Kim, who have found common ground in their dislike of the drills.

“I’ve never been a fan” of the drills, Trump said Friday. “You know why? I don’t like paying for it. We should be reimbursed for it.” Trump added that he only approved the latest exercise because it helped prepare for “a turnover of various areas to South Korea.”

“I like that because it should happen,” Trump added.

The latest U.S.-South Korean drills are aimed in part at testing South Korea’s ability to retake operational control from the U.S. during wartime. The U.S. has about 28,500 troops in South Korea.

Trump has for decades complained that U.S. allies such as South Korea, Japan and others are not paying enough for U.S. military protection. North Korea appears to be exploiting those complaints in an attempt to split the alliance between Washington and Seoul.

“Breaking the alliance is exactly what Pyongyang wants, which is why it makes all this noise and tries to blame U.S.-South Korea drills for its lack of cooperation,” says Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul.

“Pyongyang looks to exploit Trump’s preoccupation with alliance cost-sharing as well as South Korea’s deteriorating relations with Japan. Kim appeals to Trump directly about the exercises, trying to drive a wedge between Washington and Seoul,” Easley said. (VOA)

Shin Bet Arrests Two Palestinian Cousins as Suspects in Murder of Yeshiva Student

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Israeli army said that two arrests had been made in the gruesome stabbing death of 19-year old soldier and yeshiva student, Dvir Sorek. According to published reports, two Palestinian cousins were apprehended in the Arab village of Beit Kahil which is located near Hebron.

Edited by: JV Staff

Security forces identified the two suspects as Nasir Asafra, 24, and Qassem Asafra, 30, according to a Times of Israel report. The Israel Defense Forces said that the former suspect is a Hamas member but neither of them had any prior arrests. The car they used in the attack was seized as well.

Sore, the latest victim of a deadly Palestinian terror attack was found late on Wednesday near the settlement of Migdal Oz.

According to the Times, the two family members were asleep at home around 3 a.m. when security forces showed up and apprehended them.

Two other family members were also detained in the raid, Qassem’s wife Ines and Nasir’s brother Akrama, based on evidence that these two helped the suspects hide after the murder.

During the arrest, around 100 Beit Kahil residents attacked troops with stones.

Following the murder, Palestinian terror groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad praised the attack.

Hamas said, “We congratulate our people for the heroic action in which the soldier was killed. We call on the PA and the security forces to stop the security coordination. Armed struggle in the West Bank is noble. Our people will sacrifice what’s most dear to them to defend their land and Jerusalem.”

Both groups claimed the killing was in response to Israel’s demolition of buildings on the security fence with Israel in Jerusalem. Israel pulled down 13 structures on July 22 that were considered a security risk in an operation approved by Israel’s Supreme Court.

It was reported by Ma’ariv that several Hamas cells have been discovered in Judea and Samaria. Their goal is to recruit Hamas activists for terror attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised intelligence and security forces for locating and arresting the suspects.

“We will continue to fight terrorism intensely on all fronts,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Hamas, the terror group that controls the Gaza Strip, accused the Palestinian Authority, its rival in Judea and Samaria, of cooperating with Israel to identify the terrorists behind the killing.

“We have always warned against the security liaison between the Authority’s security in [Judea and Samaria] and [Israel’s] army,” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said. (WIN)

The Ninth Day of Av (August 10, 2019): Guide for the Perplexed

By: Amb. Yoram Ettinger

Based on ancient Jewish sages, https://bit.ly/2KyRq8C

1. Remembrance breeds deliverance, while forgetfulness feeds oblivion.  According to a legend, Napoleon walking one night in the streets of Paris, heard lamentations emanating from a synagogue.  When told that the wailing commemorated the 9th Day of Av – the 586 BCE destruction of the First Jewish Temple in Jerusalem – he proclaimed: “People who solemnize ancient history are destined for a glorious future!”  The verb “to remember” (זכור) appears almost 200 times in the Old Testament, including the Ten Commandments. Judaism obligates parents to transfer tradition/memories to their offspring.

  1. The most calamitous events in Jewish history occurred on the 9th Day of Av and are commemorated annually, in order to minimize future calamities:

*Barring entrance to the Promised Land to all Jews who left Egypt during the Exodus – other than Joshua & Caleb – and dooming them to die in the desert by prolonging the Exodus for 40 years. This calamity was triggered by the mistrust of the divine promise to inherit the Land of Israel; the slandering of the Land of Israel; and the preference for immediate convenience and conventional “wisdom” over faith and long-term reality and vision.

*The destruction of Jerusalem and the First Temple by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (586 BCE), which resulted in the massacre of 100,000 Jews and a massive national exile.  This devastation was the result of the failed institution of the Jewish monarchy (as forewarned by Gideon the Judge and Samuel the Prophet), the post-King Solomon violent rupture of the Jewish Kingdom into the kingdoms of Judea and Israel (Samaria), paganism, incest, and the corruption of Jewish Kings and Priests.

*The destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple by the Roman Emperor, Titus (70 CE) – which occurred as a result of severe intra-Jewish divisiveness, unjustified-hatred, physical fighting and moral decay (e.g., the mistreatment of widows and orphans) and paganism – triggered the massacre of one million Jews and another massive national exile. The Roman aim was to erase Judaism and the Jewish people from human memory.

*The Ten Martyrs – ten leading rabbis – were executed by the Roman Empire: Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Shimon Ben Gamliel, Rabbi Hanina Ben Tradion, Rabbi Yishmael Ben Elisha, Rabbi Elazar Ben Shamoa’, Rabbi Yehuda Ben Dama, Rabbi Yeshavav the Author, Rabbi Hotzpit the Translator, Rabbi Yehuda Ben Baba and Rabbi Hanina Ben Hachinay.

*The Bar Kokhbah Revolt was crushed – by the Roman Emperor Adrianus – with the killing of Bar Kokhbah and the fall of his Beitar headquarters (135 CE) – south of Jerusalem in Judea – the plowing of Jerusalem, and 600,000 Jewish fatalities.

*The pogroms of the First Crusade (1096-1099) massacred tens of thousands of Jews in Germany, France, Italy and Britain.

*The expulsion of the Jews from Britain (1290).

*The expulsion of the Jews from Spain (1492).

*The eruption of the First World War (1914).

*The beginning of the 1942 deportation of Warsaw Ghetto Jews to the Treblinka extermination camp.

  1. The 9th Day of Av (the 11th Jewish month) was first mentioned in the Book of Zechariah7:3.  It is one of four Jewish fast days, commemorating the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Temples, in an attempt to benefit from history by avoiding costly future missteps: the 10th Day of Tevet (the onset of the Nebuchadnezzar’s siege of Jerusalem); the 17th day of Tamuz (the day the walls of Jerusalem were breached); the 9th day of Av (the destruction of both Temples); and the 3rd day of Tishrei (The murder of the Jewish Governor Gedalyah – who maintained a level of post-destruction Jewish autonomy – which led to a murderous rampage by the Babylonians and to the Jewish exile).

It concludes the 21 days of calamity and lamentation, which began on the 17th day of the Jewish month of Tamuz, when the walls of Jerusalem were breached by Nebuchadnezzar (1st Temple) and Titus (2nd Temple), launching a seven-week period of consolation, ingathering and renewal, which are concluded on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

  1. Notwithstanding the calamities, the 9th Day of Av yields a message of realistic optimism, personally and nationally: from the WW2 Holocaust to the 1948 reestablishment of the Jewish State; from exile and subjugation to the ingathering and liberty in the Land of Israel; from near-extinction and next-to-irrelevance at the end of WW2 to the unique Jewish contributions to humanity – by the Jewish people and the Jewish State – in the areas of medicine, science, space, hightech, education, environment, agriculture, irrigation, military, etc..
  2. Key lessons of the 9th Day of Av: sustaining faith and hope, and refraining from forgetfulness, despair, fatalism and pessimism, irrespective of the odds, which may seem insurmountable.

  1. The centrality of Jerusalem in Jewish history is commemorated on the 9th day of Av, highlighted by Psalm 137:5 – “If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.” According to the Babylonian Talmud (a key source of Jewish law), Ta’anit 30: “He who laments the destruction of Jerusalem will be privileged to witness its renewal.”
  2. The message “from destruction to deliverance and renewal” is conveyed by the Book of Lamentations, which was composed by the Prophet Jeremiah, who prophesized destruction, exile and deliverance. The Book of Lamentations – The Scroll of Eikhah in Hebrew – is one of the five Biblical Scrolls: Song of Songs, the Book of Ruth, the Book of Lamentations, Ecclesiastes and the Scroll of Esther.  The Book of Lamentations is read during the first nine days of the 11th Jewish month of Av, “the Days of Calamity.” The numerical value of the Hebrew letters of Eikhah (איכה) is 36, which is equal to the number of righteous, legendary Jewish persons, as well as to life (18) times two. The Hebrew meaning of Eikhah (איכה) could be interpreted as a reproaching “How Come?!”, as well as “Where are you (God)?” or “Why have you (God) strayed away?”  The term איכה features in the first chapter of Deuteronomy and the first chapter of Isaiah. Both are studied annually in conjunction with the Book of Lamentations on the 9th day of Av. Thus the 9thday of Av leverages the unique values of Moses (Deuteronomy) and the two Prophets – Jeremiah and Isaiah.

  1. The 9th Day of Av has demonstrated that crisis is a launching pad to growth, and transformation from curse and decay to blessing and renewal.  The Hebrew spelling of Av (אב) consists of the first two letters of the Hebrew Alpha-Beth, the spelling of “father” and “bud,” and the first two letters of “spring” (אביב which also means, in Hebrew, “the father of twelve months”).  The numerical value of Av, אב, (א=1 and ב=2) is 3, the combination of the basic even and odd numbers (“A cord of 3 strands is not easily broken,” Ecclesiastes 4:12). The zodiac sign of the month of Av is a lion, representing the Lion of Judah, rising from the ashes of the destruction caused by Nebuchadnezzar, whose symbol was also the lion. The fast on the 9th day of Av is succeeded by the 15th day of Av – a Jewish holiday of love and reconciliation.
