Exposing BLM’s Agenda-Driven K-12 Curriculum

0

Christopher Paslay(American Thinker)

February is Black History Month, and the push to inject Black Lives Matter curriculum into America’s K-12 schools is in high gear. In the fight for racial justice, the slogan “black lives matter” is a reasonable mantra that focuses on equality; creating a fair and inclusive society is indeed a very worthy goal.

But “Black Lives Matter” the activist organization with a registered political action committee is a different matter entirely. And it’s Black Lives Matter the political organization that is pushing an agenda-driven curriculum into America’s K-12 schools, an agenda that at times is not only racially polarizing, but one that calls for defunding police; disrupting the nuclear family; and replacing individualism and capitalism with an irresponsible brand of socialist globalism.

A closer look at the document “Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action Starter Kit” shows just how politically driven their curriculum is.  “In this era of mass incarceration, there is a school-to-prison-pipeline system that is more invested in locking up youth than unlocking their minds,” the introduction states. “That system uses harsh discipline policies that push Black students out of schools at disproportionate rates; denies students the right to learn about their own cultures and whitewashes the curriculum to exclude many of the struggles and contributions of Black people and other people of color; and is pushing out Black teachers from the schools in cities around the country.”

It’s this very irresponsible rhetoric that causes many educators to regard BLM more as a propaganda outfit than a genuine organization seeking to educate young people (here is a resource to push back against this rhetoric). To state that our school system “is more invested in locking up youth than unlocking their minds” is not only terribly irresponsible and untrue, but extremely demoralizing to the millions of hard-working educators around the country who have dedicated their lives to teaching children.

Likewise, the notion that black teachers are being “pushed out” from schools is ridiculous; in my 25 years as a teacher, I’ve witnessed a steady, collaborative effort to recruit teachers of color into America’s classrooms, not push them out. And yet BLM feels the need to use this propagandistic, inflammatory language, when simply calling for cooperation is all that is needed.

The so-called “demands” BLM is pushing for is also concerning. One demand is to end “Black Teacher Pushouts.” According to BLM, “Racist policies in schools and biased skills exams eliminate Black and Brown teaching candidates.” The National Center for Education Statistics show that Black teachers make up about 8 percent of America’s teaching force, while being 13 percent of the population. And although this is slightly disproportionate, the disparity has more to do with career interest than it does with so-called “biased skills exams.” Again, over the past 20 years, America’s educational system — at both the university and K-12 level — have done all it could to recruit, train, and retain teachers of color.

Yet BLM’s “School Week of Action Starter Kit” states:

The elimination of Black teachers is an aggressive push towards homogenizing education in America, creating the School to Prison Pipeline, and honoring the pervasive system of racism from which our country gains its roots…  Our Black Teachers need our support and deserve to no longer be abandoned.

This is shameful rhetoric, to put it lightly.

BLM also demands the defunding of school police, and an increase in school counselors. “We have seen videos of horrifying interactions with police officers and Black students in school and each week we hear of Black people having the police called on them for simply existing while Black,” they state.  And while most agree investing in school counselors is a good idea, forwarding the notion that Black students are disciplined or confronted by police simply for being black is another example of irresponsible hyperbole, aimed at agitation. In K-12 schools, Black students are disciplined or met by police because they commit behavioral infractions, some very serious, just like students of all races.

At the center of the BLM “School Starter Kit” are the groups’ “13 Guiding Principles,” one of which is “globalism,” and another “Black Villages,” the former concerned with replacing nationalism with a blend of worldwide socialism, and the latter with the deconstruction the “Western nuclear family.” This is quite puzzling, being that 50 years of educational and sociological research shows that children who come from a two-parent nuclear family do better on every academic and behavior measure than those kids who come from a non-nuclear family.

And yet the National Education Association, America’s biggest teachers union, has endorsed BLM’s curriculum.

A deeper dive into the curriculum itself is eye-opening. BLM’s elementary school lesson plan includes a resource titled “Activism, Organizing and Resistance,” which instructs third-grade art teachers to help their students become community activists, literally.  In a lesson titled “Art and Community Activism,” along with an activity called “Who Are the Activists in My Community?” children are taught to make activist signs and murals, all supporting the pre-established BLM globalist, anti-police, anti-nuclear family agenda.

The lessons for third-graders go on to teach “resistance stories,” explore the usefulness of “teacher strikes,” and require children to deconstruct their racial and gender identities through identity maps and puzzles.

The middle school BLM curriculum has pre-adolescents answer the essential question: “How has historical oppression lead [sic] to racial injustice in today’s criminal justice system?” From here these children are asked to imagine “a world with no police” by completing a free-writing exercise and offers teachers a resource document called “Teaching about Controversial or Difficult Issues” which promotes the college-level book The New Jim Crow. “Students and teachers can read this chapter to explore how many police departments ‘seek and destroy’ in some neighborhoods while they ‘protect and serve’ in others,” the resources states.

The BLM high school curriculum offers a way to embed the activist group’s agenda in all subjects — including math — and in English class, offers an article titled “White People Hate Protests,” complete with pictures of police manhandling blacks from the 1960s. This article is supplemented by a resource on LBJ’s Riot Commission, an activity the insinuates that property destruction is okay if it’s done for the right reasons. The lesson is complete with discussion questions, one of which asks: “Name 2-3 causes of the riots you feel were most important. Explain your selections.”

This is only a small slice of BLM’s curriculum that is being pushed into a public school near you.  This is only a small slice of their effort to defund police, disrupt nuclear families, and replace individualism with socialism. It’s straightforward political indoctrination, no objection allowed. It’s meant to teach students what to think, not how to think, ignores most literacy and skills-based instruction, and aims to turn children into future activists who will carry their political agenda into the next generation.

Jerry Seinfeld & Other NY Celebs to Do Voice Announcements on MTA Subways Buses to Increase Ridership

(TJVNews.com) For those resilient New Yorkers who still trudge on the subway each day to work or travel the iconic rail lines for the purposes of recreational pursuits, there is something pleasant in store for loyal strap hangers.

Regular subway riders are familiar with the “stand clear of the closing doors” announcement at each stop, but this time around the computerized voice will be replaced by the voices of a star studded cast of eclectic celebs.

The New York Post reported that starting today, some New York City born celebrities will be taking over the reins in the voice department and will be the ones we hear in all MTA subway and bus announcements. Because New York City’s public transportation system has a witnessed a steady decline in passengers since the outbreak of the coronavirus last March, the new initiative is hoping to revive the commuter system and make it fun and exciting to ride subways and buses again.

Among those who will regale riders will be comedian Jerry Seinfeld, Debi Mazar and host of “The View”  actress Whoopi Goldberg.

Speaking to the Post, native New Yorker Mazar said, “The subway is part of my DNA. I’m so excited to do this. I want subway riders to feel welcome, and I want them to hear a familiar voice, think for a second and maybe smile.” The Post reported that Mazar wears a necklace made from a 1964 token (her birth year).

The brainchild behind this campaign to make the subways and buses more appealing to passengers is director Nicolas Heller, according to the Post report. He is the man behind the popular @NewYorkNico Instagram account, which regularly features unique Big Apple characters for its 542,000 followers, as was reported by the Post.

Heller, 32, told the Post that “In November, the MTA reached out asking for ideas. We needed to be reminded that we’re still New York. We’re still strong, and we’re going to come back stronger than ever.” His idea of having celebrities voice the public service announcements was considered a long shot but Heller said, “They loved that idea. But the only caveat was that there was no budget for this. I knew I could assemble a team to do this for free, but I didn’t know if big-time celebrities would donate their time.”

After soliciting the services of approximately 50 prominent New Yorkers representing the entertainment field as well as business and culture, Heller said that “no one had an issue with there being no money involved,” according to the Post report.

Heller was able to get about 25 of them to agree to be the voice of PSAs on subways and buses. Among them are comedic writer “Fran Lebowitz, rappers Jadakiss and Cam’ron, comedians Desus & Mero, radio personalities Angela Yee and Angie Martinez and sportscaster Michael Kay,” according to the Post report.. Jerry Seinfeld, who happens to b a particular favorite of Heller’s agreed to be part of the project because of his wife and daughter’s suggestion.

“Both his wife and his daughter follow me on Instagram, and they are fans. So I reached out to them, and they connected me to Jerry,” Heller told the Post.

The MTA has essentially given Heller creative freedom in the project. He has since provided the celebrities with scripts written by his team and they plan to improvise, which should add even more exciting moments to this subway and bus experience.

According to the Post report, Jadakiss’s  famous laugh will be heard on a regular basis and a teaser posted on Heller’s Twitter feed indicated that Seinfeld, during a reminder to socially distance mused, “Think of how much you’ll save not needing cologne.”

Meanwhile Cam’ron persuaded riders to keep their masks on by saying, “Look, I don’t care if you’re from uptown, downtown, Harlem, Switzerland, wherever. I don’t care if you’re a chicken or a duck. And you know what? COVID don’t care either,” he said.

Film Review – The 800 Jewish Holocaust Orphans of Selvino

Poland’s “dignity” is offended by the truth—but only when that truth exposes a Polish official or citizen for having aided and abetted the Nazis and for having persecuted Polish Jews during the Nazi occupation. The Polish government has never tried any Polish historian or journalist for having described Polish individuals and clergy who fed, hid, and saved Polish Jews.

The honor of Poland is at stake and the Poles are deeply invested in presenting themselves as “victims”—of the Russians and of the Nazis, never also as the perpetrators of Jew-hatred and pogroms long before the Nazi armies came to town, and after they were driven out (Jewabne, Kielce).

Down the decades, I have learned bitter but complex truths about the French, Dutch, Belgian, Spanish, Hungarian, Greek, Croatian, Norwegian, and Ukrainian complicity in the Holocaust. Somehow, because I loved Italy (the art, the opera, the landscape, the cinema), I never looked too closely at their role during World War Two. Once, when I hired a guide to take me on a tour of Jewish Italy, she gave me a book which contained a fairly gruesome history of 2,000 years of Italian Jewish sorrows. And once, when I was living in Venice, it hit me hard when I learned that Venice—Venice! had also turned over its Jews to Hitler, albeit, not until 1943.

When I looked into the matter further, I understood that Italy had begun to disenfranchise its Jews in 1938, before Kristallnacht took place in Germany. Jewish children were no longer allowed to attend private schools, Jewish professors were exiled from all universities, from government and military service, as well as from banking and insurance industries. In 1939 and 1940, Jewish peddlers and shopkeepers’ licenses were revoked and all Jews who held stocks and bonds were required to turn them over to “Aryans.” If possible, matters worsened once Germany occupied Italy in 1943. According to Ms. Ilaria Pavan, a former Italian official investigating the “looting of property of Jewish Italian citizens,” as of 2010, such looting “totaled almost 1 billion in today’s values.”

As with Poland, all the European histories describe governments and individuals who were eager to expropriate Jewish property (real estate, homes, factories, art work, chinaware, clothing, bank accounts, furniture); eager to hand over the former Jewish owners to Hitler’s gas chambers. There are also accurate accounts of non-Jewish European who saved Jews and who fought Hitler’s armies as partisans.

There were heroes and villains, resisters and cowards, in every country.

What got me thinking about this all over again was my accidental discovery of a very moving eight-part miniseries, The War is Over, which is just now being live-streamed on MHZ in Italian with English subtitles. This RAI film is based on the book by Aharon Megged about the orphaned “children of Selvino,” and relates the true story of the 800 traumatized Jewish children who were rescued from concentration camps and ghettos all across Europe, who had no parents, no families, and who were physically, psychologically, spiritually, and sexually wounded, as well as educationally deprived.

From 1945-1948, the Milanese Jewish community, the municipality of Milan, soldiers of the Jewish Brigade (Moshe Ze-eri and Teddy Be’eri), the Jewish Agency, the Joint Distribution Committee, Youth Aliyah, and former anti-fascist partisan fighters, and Jewish and non-Jewish youth workers all took care of these children in an abandoned estate in northern Italy. They tried to heal them well enough so that they could make the journey to Palestine on those heroically “illegal” immigrant ships that the British stopped, fired upon, and forced to land in Cyprus. Eventually, some of these children joined Kibbutz Tze’elim in the Negev.

In 2019, after a seven year campaign, a museum opened in Selvino to commemorate this heroic rescue operation.

The miniseries is beautifully and soulfully acted (Michele Riondino, Isabella Ragonese, Valerio Binasco), but the children will steal your heart. Please watch it. Experience the past present.  (Israel National News)

Although the year 2020 will be remembered as one of the most challenging years in modern history, there were some folks who will remember the year that ushered in a new decade with pure delight.

And that delight is reserved for a rarified bunch known as billionaire hedge fund managers. Despite a year that saw the nation endure lockdowns, economic calamities, a record number of deaths due to Covid as well as political and social upheavals, the “fat cats” walked off with substantially more of the green stuff in their wallets.

According to a New York Post report, “the top 15 hedge fund managers added a whopping $23.2 billion to their already extensive personal fortunes amid a stock market rally fueled by rock-bottom interest rates.” This information was compiled by Bloomberg.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the hedge fund manager who took a high ranking place on the list of those who made a fortune in the past year was Chase Coleman of Tiger Global Management. He pocketed a nifty $3 billion to add to his eye popping fortune.

The 45-year old Coleman apparently invested in stocks like Zoom and Peleton; two companies that saw their profits soar through the proverbial roof during Covid. Bloomberg reported that that the return for Coleman’s investors were 48 percent.

While that resulted in substantial fees, according to the Post report, the majority of his gains were from a personal stake in his fund, the news agency said.

Bloomberg Billionaires Index, made mention of the fact that there was someone out there in hedge fund land who actually topped Coleman in terms of money earned in 2020.

Michael Platt, a trader based in the UK raked in a staggering $5 billion smackers. The Post report indicated that Platt was omitted from the list of the richest hedge fund managers because his company, Bluecrest Capital Management no longer manages money for outside investors. Bloomberg noted that last year the company earned 95 percent.

Taking the number two spot on the hedge fund manager list was former NSA codebreaker and MIT math professor Jim Simons, according to the Post report. His company, known as Renaissance Technologies brought in an impressive $2.6 billion.

The post reported that he windfall comes despite loses in three RenTech funds that have resulted in a reported $5 billion in investor redemptions since Dec. 1. In January, Simons, 82, announced that he stepped down from the chairman role at RenTech at the beginning of 2021, according to the Post report.

Following Simons on the big money list was Izzy Englander of Millennium who raked in $2.2 billion. Then comes Lone Pine’s Steven Mandel at $1.8 billion; Citadel’s Ken Griffin at $1.8 billion, Coutue’s Phillipe Laffont at $1.7 billion and Point72 founder-turned-New York Mets owner Steve Cohen, who pulled in about $1.7 billion for 2020, according to the Post report.

Posting the biggest return of the year was Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square at 83 percent, putting him at number 9 on the list.

No. 9 on the list was Bill Ackman, whose Pershing Square also posted the biggest return of the year at 83 percent. According to Bloomberg, Ackman, launched a $4 billion blank-check company last year and walked off with a cool $1.3 billion.

Others who walked away with a few extra pennies in their pocket included Daniel Sundheim of D1 Partners, who made $1.1 billion; Andreas Halvorsen of Viking Global who made $923 million and Gabe Plotkin of Melvin Capital who earned a reported $846 million, as was reported by the Post.

Bombshell Report: Cuomo’s Secretary Admits that Precise Numbers of NY Nursing Home Deaths Due to Covid Were Intentionally Withheld from Lawmakers

Edited by: Fern Sidman

In a shocking admission on Thursday, it has been reported in the New York Post that Governor Andrew Cuomo’s secretary Melissa DeRosa said on a video conference call with state Democratic legislators that the governor and his staff had withheld the actual number of those who died in nursing homes from the Covid-19 virus.

DeRosa issued an apology of sorts and explained that the office in which she works “froze” out of fear the true numbers would “be used against us” by federal prosecutors, The Post has learned.

The Post reported that DeRosa explained that the Cuomo administration did not comply with a state legislative request in August for the precise numbers of those who lost their lives in nursing homes because she felt that former President Trump was politicizing the issue and looking to point fingers at his political opponents.

In an audio recording of the meeting that last for two hours, the Post reported that DeRosa said of then President Trump, “He starts tweeting that we killed everyone in nursing homes.“He starts going after New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, starts going after California Gov. Gavin Newsom, starts going after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.”

The NY Post reported that DeRosa said that in addition to attacking the aforementioned Democratic governors, Trump then threatened to “direct the Department of Justice to do an investigation into us.” It was then that she said, “and basically, we froze because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation.”

She added that this event played a role in the decision to not reveal the actual numbers of those who died in New York nursing homes.

Between nursing homes and assisted living facilities, over 15,000 people died of Covid-19 due to exposure to recovering patients who were transferred to such facilities by the Cuomo administration and the New York State Health Department. It was the health department under the leadership of Howard Zucker who issued a directive on March 25h that nursing homes open their doors to Covid patients who were in hospitals.

The Post reported that DeRosa attempted to offer an apology for the egregious error and to acknowledge that state Democratic lawmakers were inconvenienced politically.

“So we do apologize,” DeRosa said, according to the NY Post report. “I do understand the position that you were put in. I know that it is not fair. It was not our intention to put you in that political position with the Republicans.”

One of the state legislators who had asked for the numbers of nursing home deaths in August was Assembly Health Committee Chairman Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan). One the video call when DeRosa made the shocking admission, he rejected the apology offhand, according to the audio recording, as was reported by the Post.

Gottfried said, “I don’t have enough time today to explain all the reasons why I don’t give that any credit at all.”

Also unwilling to accept the expression of remorse from DeRosa was State Senate Aging Committee Chairwoman Rachel May (D-Syracuse), according to the Post report. May castigated DeRosa for the admission as she was harshly taken to task over the nursing home deaths issue during her re-election bid.

“And the issue for me, the biggest issue of all is feeling like I needed to defend — or at least not attack — an administration that was appearing to be covering something up,” May said, according to the Post report.

“And in a, in a pandemic, when you want the public to trust the public-health officials, and there is this clear feeling that they’re not coming, being forthcoming with you, that is really hard and it remains difficult.”

Last month New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report which was predicated on ongoing investigations into the matter of the nursing home deaths since March of 2020. The report concluded that “a larger number of nursing home residents died from COVID-19 than the New York State Department of Health’s (DOH) published nursing home data reflected and may have been undercounted by as much as 50 percent.”

The report added that “the investigations also revealed that nursing homes’ lack of compliance with infection control protocols put residents at increased risk of harm, and facilities that had lower pre-pandemic staffing ratings had higher COVID-19 fatality rates.”

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the only law enforcement agency in the state specifically mandated to investigate and prosecute abuse and neglect of residents in nursing homes. In early March, OAG received and began to investigate allegations and indications of COVID-19-related neglect of residents in nursing homes.

“As the pandemic and our investigations continue, it is imperative that we understand why the residents of nursing homes in New York unnecessarily suffered at such an alarming rate,” said Attorney General James. “While we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spur increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents. Nursing homes residents and workers deserve to live and work in safe environments, and I will continue to work hard to safeguard this basic right during this precarious time.”

DeRosa said that the Department of Justice was no longer focused on New York’s nursing home deaths. According to the New York Post report, DeRosa said, “All signs point to they are not looking at this, they’ve dropped it. They never formally opened an investigation. They sent a letter asking a number of questions and then we satisfied those questions and it appears that they’re gone.”

The Post reported that Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said, “We explained that the Trump administration was in the midst of a politically motivated effort to blame democratic states for COVID deaths and that we were cooperating with Federal document productions and that was the priority and now that it is over we can address the state legislature.”

“That said, we were working simultaneously to complete the audit of information they were asking for,” he added.

On Thursday night, a Fox News report said that New York Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik had issued a demand that Governor Cuomo and his “senior team” be prosecuted immediately on both the state and federal levels.

“Governor Cuomo, the secretary to the governor, and his senior team must be prosecuted immediately – both by the attorney general of New York state and the U.S. Department of Justice,” Stefanik said. “This bombshell admission of a cover-up and the remarks by the secretary to the governor indicating intent to obstruct any federal investigation is a stunning and criminal abuse of power.”

Fox News also reported that the video call in question prompted condemnations from New York Republicans at all levels of government – with the state party chairman Nick Langworthy calling for Cuomo’s impeachment and the state Assembly’s Minority Leader William Barclay demanding subpoenas and hearings.

“Instead of apologizing or providing answer to the thousands of New York families who lost loved ones, the governor’s administration made apologies to politicians behind closed doors for the ‘political inconvenience’ this scandal has caused them,” said New York State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt, who demanded a “top to bottom” investigation and that Cuomo’s emergency powers be stripped until it’s sorted out, as was reported by Fox News.

On Friday, Cuomo is scheduled to meet with President Biden during a conference on COVID relief with a bipartisan group of mayors and governors Friday.

“It is the responsibility of the president to ensure the independence of the Department of Justice,” Stefanik said. “After the self-implicating admission by Gov. Cuomo and his staff, it is clear to every American that this investigation must go forward.”

FEDERAL PHARMACY PROGRAM BOOSTS NYC CITY VACCINATION EFFORT

The number of vaccine doses available for New York City each week received a 26,500-dose boost through a federal program that provides retail pharmacies with the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine will be delivered directly to pharmacies specifically for New Yorkers who are older than 65 under New York State guidelines. Older New Yorkers are an especially important population due to risk of poor outcomes from COVID-19.

“Pharmacies are a trusted part of our infrastructure, particularly for seniors who rely on them for medications and other services,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Dave A. Chokshi. “These additional doses will be a lifeline for so many city residents.”

This week (beginning 2/8), the 26,500 doses allocated to the pharmacy program increased the city’s doses by 20% from the 131,825 allocated to 158,325 first doses. In the coming week (beginning 2/15), the additional 26,500 weekly doses will be added to the expected 138,125 doses to bring the total to 164,625.

In New York City, the federal pharmacy partners are Walgreens/Duane Reade, Costco and Rite Aid. The new program will increase the number of access points on the City’s Vaccine Finder by more than 250 sites this week. These include 188 Walgreens sites, 75 Rite Aid sites and 5 Costco sites.

This increases the total number of vaccine access points open to any of the eligible public to approximately 400.

The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program is a partnership between the CDC, pharmacies and local governments that will increase access to COVID-19 vaccination across the country. The Biden Administration has allocated 1-million doses across the country, proportional to population.

Eligible New Yorkers can look for appointments online at vaccinefinder.nyc.gov.

Ron DeSantis: Florida Travel Restrictions Would ‘ Be a Political Attack’ Against Floridians, Not ‘Based in Science’

0
AP

HANNAH BLEAU

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) responded to reports of the Biden White House considering imposing travel restrictions on the state, telling reporters that it would be a “political attack against the people of Florida” as well as “unconstitutional,” “unwise,” and “unjust.”

“We will oppose it 100 percent,” DeSantis said Thursday in reaction to the reports of the Biden White House considering domestic travel restrictions on states such as Florida and California due to fears of spreading variant cases of the Chinese coronavirus.

“It would not be based in science. It would purely be a political attack against the people of Florida. And it’s unclear why they would even try talking about that,” the governor said.

DeSantis highlighted the seeming hypocrisy of the administration, noting it would impose a ban on Americans who seek to “travel freely throughout our country while allowing illegal aliens to pour across the southern border unmolested.”

It “would be a ridiculous, but very damaging, farce,” DeSantis noted.

He is not the only leader to make such a comparison. Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) have also observed the discrepancies in the Democrat-led White House’s tactics, which is also reportedly considering requiring domestic travelers to take a coronavirus test before traveling.

“Tests for Americans before domestic flights? By dismantling immigration enforcement, the Biden administration invited a wave of illegal immigrants — and they’re allowed in without COVID [Chinese coronavirus] tests,” Cotton said.

“To Biden, illegal immigrants come before Americans,” he added:

Grassley made a similar observation days later.

“Can’t fly into USA w/o showing negative test for a virus but Pres Biden will let ppl who illegally walked across the border do so w/o testing. Is that protecting our citizens?” Grassley asked:

DeSantis added that a Florida travel ban would be “unconstitutional; it would be unwise, and it would be unjust.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) shot back at the reports as well, agreeing that the travel restrictions would have no fundamental basis in science.

“Instead, it would only serve to inflict severe and devastating economic pain on an already damaged economy,” Rubio assessed, urging the administration to instead “fast-track additional vaccines to the state instead of attempting to cripple our economy.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Florida has reported 343 cases of the U.K. variant, which is said to be more contagious than the original strain.

“No decisions have been made, but we certainly are having conversations across government,” a White House official said, according to the Miami Herald. The official added that “all options are on the table.”

DeSantis has continued to come under fire from progressive critics for taking a different approach to the virus than many blue state governors, maximizing personal and economic freedom for Florida residents while focusing on protecting the most vulnerable. As data shows, Florida seems to be faring just as well as its blue state counterparts without heavy lockdown restrictions or a statewide mask mandate.

Florida has reported 35 cases of the Wuhan virus per 100,000 in the last seven days (or 52,622 cases total), according to the CDC’s February 10 data. The CDC data, which counts New York City separately from the Empire State as a whole, shows New York State reporting 39.8 cases per 100,000 in the same time frame, or 30,771 cases. Separately, New York City has reported 51.1 cases per 100,000 in the last seven days, or 30,066 cases despite more stringent mitigation measures.

FDA approves 1st Emergency Use of Antibody Drug to Fight COVID From Eli Lilly

(AP) U.S. health officials have allowed emergency use of the first antibody drug to help the immune system fight COVID-19, an experimental approach against the virus that has killed more than 238,000 Americans.

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday cleared the experimental drug from Eli Lilly for people 12 and older with mild or moderate COVID-19 not requiring hospitalization. It’s a one-time treatment given through an IV.

The therapy is still undergoing additional testing to establish its safety and effectiveness. It is similar to a treatment President Donald Trump received after contracting the virus last month.

Lilly’s studies of the antibody drug are continuing. Early results suggest it may help clear the coronavirus sooner and possibly cut hospitalizations in people with mild to moderate COVID-19. A study of it in hospitalized patients was stopped when independent monitors saw the drug did not seem to be helping in that situation.

The government previously reached an agreement to buy and supply much of the early production of Lilly’s drug.

Only one drug — Gilead Sciences’ remdesivir — has full FDA approval for treating COVID-19. Government treatment guidelines also back using dexamethasone and other steroids for certain severely ill, hospitalized patients.

One other treatment has an emergency use designation now — convalescent plasma, or the blood of COVID-19 survivors. No large studies have shown it to be more effective than usual care alone, however.

The new drug is part of an emerging family of biologic therapies that offer a promising new approach to preventing serious disease and death from COVID-19. Experts say the infused drugs could serve as a therapeutic bridge to help manage the virus until vaccines are widely available.

The drugs are laboratory-made versions of antibodies, blood proteins which the body creates to help target and eliminate foreign infections. The new therapies are concentrated versions of the antibodies that proved most effective against the virus in patient studies.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. also has asked for emergency authorization for an antibody drug it is testing, the one Trump received.

FDA regulators authorized the Lilly drug using their emergency powers to quickly speed the availability of experimental drugs and other medical products during public health crises.

In normal times the FDA requires “substantial evidence” to show that a drug is safe and effective, usually through one or more large, rigorously controlled patient studies. But during public health emergencies the agency can lower those standards and require only that an experimental treatment’s potential benefits outweigh its risks.

The emergency authorization functions like a temporary approval for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. To win full approval, Lilly will have to submit additional research to fully define the drug’s safety and benefit for patients.

The government has signed an agreement with Lilly to spend $375 million to buy 300,000 vials of the drug. How many doses that would provide is unclear. Each vial contains 70 milligrams and that dose proved ineffective in the early results. It took four times that amount — 2,800 milligrams — to show any effect.

Trump Impeachment ‘Political Theater,’ Ignores US History: Constitutional Lawyer

BY ISABEL VAN BRUGEN AND JAN JEKIELEK(EPOCH TIMES)

The impeachment effort against former President Donald Trump is “political theater” that goes against the history of the United States and the American Constitution itself, according to constitutional attorney Rick Green.

“When we have political actors involved, we get political theater. And that’s a lot of what we’re getting here. Is this the judiciary now? Is the Senate now the judiciary that will try any citizen? Because an impeachment is specifically for someone that is in office, according to the American Constitution,” Green, a former Texas state representative and co-founder of the Patriot Academy, told “American Thought Leaders.”

Trump’s attorneys have stated that it goes against the Constitution to impeach or try a former office-holder.

“Virtually everyone agrees that impeachment in our Constitution is designed for those three categories listed in Article 2, Section 4. And that’s the president, the vice president, and civil officers—so people that are still serving in office,” Green said.

He said the concept being pushed currently in the impeachment trial—that if Trump isn’t convicted he will get away with doing “horrible things,” and future presidents will be able to “do whatever they want and get away with it”—is “a total red herring.”

“It’s literally fantasy,” the attorney said.

House Democrats, joined by 10 Republicans, voted on Jan. 13 to approve a single article of impeachment (pdf) against Trump for “incitement of insurrection,” making him the first president to be impeached twice. On Feb. 9, he became the first former president to stand trial.

Democrats allege that the president incited violence at the Capitol in a speech he delivered near the White House on Jan 6. In his address, Trump used the words “fight like hell” in reference to his team’s legal efforts around election integrity. The Democrats allege that Trump used the words to incite his followers to commit violence.

However, Democratic House impeachment managers, led by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), in their arguments on Feb. 10, presented no new evidence to support the allegation that Trump incited an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last month.

Green suggested that in this case, constitutional provisions are being abused in order to “silence” the “opposition.”

“My fear is a separation of powers conflict here that the Senate becomes more and more the judiciary… and now if they can go after someone that’s a citizen like Donald Trump is today, well, they can indict you. They can indict me, they can prevent us from running for future office.

“I know that was not the view of the Founding Fathers. And when you abuse a constitutional provision in one instance, then other people will be able to abuse it in other instances in the future.”

The constitutional attorney accused the Democratic House impeachment managers of stringing elements of the American Constitution together in order to argue that a former president can be impeached.

“I’ve said this throughout this whole process that what they’re doing and pulling together different parts of the Constitution and creating these new rules is more worthy of a banana republic than a constitutional republic,” he said.

Green said language from Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution was taken, “separated,” and mixed with some of the language in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, in a way that was both “masterful” and “deceptive.”

“The reason they’re doing that is because on one hand, they want to say he’s the president. On the other hand, they want to say, it doesn’t matter if he’s the president, he did something awful, and we can still impeach. Putting those things together is the way that they’re trying to make their case. It’s when we say political theater,” he explained.

“They took a few kernels of truth—a few phrases out of the Constitution that are obviously there, and even few historical stories. They used those to weave that together to create a fantasy of a situation that has never been done in history—but it feels like it’s accurate and is truth because of the little kernels of truth that were thrown out there. That’s frankly good political theater,” Green said of the impeachment managers in the way that they presented their arguments.

The attorney said that at this point, the United States is living “post-Constitution,” and urged Americans to read the text of the Constitution themselves.

“We’re literally ignoring the constitutional history and the plain text of the Constitution. I think it’s important for us to actually as citizens, to go look at the Constitution ourselves, and not just listen to the silver tongue rhetoric,” he said.

He added: “It’s just like any other trial, you walk into a trial. If trial attorneys are really good, they paint the picture that they want you to believe and I’m afraid they’ve done that in this case, but it is new territory, and it ignores 240 years of history in the United States. And most importantly, it ignores the Constitution itself.”

The Democrats face an uphill battle in convincing enough Republican senators that Trump should be convicted. Forty-four Republicans voted on the first day of the trial that the Senate doesn’t have jurisdiction to try Trump because he’s now a private citizen. Several Republican senators said on Feb. 9 that the vote is an indicator of how the GOP members will ultimately vote on the question of whether the former president is guilty.

Democrats need the votes of at least 17 Republicans in order to secure the supermajority needed to convict Trump. If the vote from the first day of the trial is any indication, the impeachment managers need to change the minds of at least 11 Republicans, a task which even liberal media commentators concede is virtually impossible.

Report: Mossad killed Iran nuke expert with 1-ton remote-controlled gun, took 8 months to smuggle in

0

By World Israel News Staff

The top Iranian nuclear weapons expert who was assassinated last November was shot dead by Mossad agents using a one-ton automatic rifle smuggled into the country piece by piece, the Jewish Chronicle reported Wednesday.

The squad that eliminated Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was comprised of more than 20 members from Israel and Iran who smuggled the pieces of the remote-controlled weapon over eight-months, according to intelligence sources who spoke with the British newspaper. The same sources also said that the Iranian government estimates that it will take at least six years to train someone to replace Fakhrizadeh.

Sources in Israel estimated that Fakhrizadeh’s death pushed back Iran’s breakout time to an atomic bomb from three and a half months to two years. According to senior intelligence sources, the delay could reach as long as five years even though after the assassination Iran accelerated the enrichment of uranium needed to make a bomb.

The hit squad assembled the weapon in a Nissan van and activated the gun by remote control while they were watching a moving target. The weapon had a large bomb attached to it, destroying the evidence immediately after the assassination.

“The regime was humiliated and devastated. Even the Mossad was surprised by the huge impact,” a source familiar with the operation said.

“Thank God we got all our people out and they didn’t catch anyone. They didn’t even come close,” the source added. “Their security was not bad at all, but the Mossad was much better. It was a major thing that happened, a dramatic operation.”

The report said international intelligence sources gave Israel sole responsibility for the attack and American officials were only given a “small hint, like checking the water temperature” before the assassination was launched.

However, other sources believe that the U.S. was a partner in the assassination, albeit to a relatively small extent, in order to get then-President Donald Trump to leave a mark. Other sources attributed the success of the operation to Iranian security forces assigning resources to pursue opponents to the regime.

“The Mossad had documents proving that Fakhrizadeh had worked on several nuclear warheads, each one able to cause five Hiroshimas,” Jacob Nagel, former deputy head of the National Security Council, told the Chronicle. “He was serious. He still meant to do what he planned. So someone decided that he had had enough time on earth.”

The description in the paper’s report is consistent with some of the versions provided by the Iranians regarding the assassination. According to Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alawi, the assassination was carried out by “automatic weapons” and one of its organizers was an Iranian military man.

Alawi claimed earlier this week that the planner’s military expertise prevented intelligence services from uncovering the conspiracy, as they were banned from spying on military personnel and operating in its ranks.

Fahrizada, 59, was killed when he left his holiday home near Tehran, where he was staying with his wife, who was not injured in the incident. Although he was traveling in an armored vehicle, accompanied by security guards, the assassins managed to eliminate him in an ambush at a central junction on the road leading to the Iranian capital.

The assassination led to accusations by senior regime officials in Iran against Israel and threats of retaliation.

Mark Cuban’s Presidential Aspirations ‘Officially Over’ After Ditching Anthem, Says Ex-NFL Player

WARNER TODD HUSTON

Former Minnesota Vikings safety Jack Brewer proclaimed NBA Owner Mark Cuban’s hopes of becoming president “officially over” after Cuban proudly announced that the Mavericks had ended the national anthem.

Brewer, now a Fox News contributor, told the hosts of Fox & Friends that Cuban’s announcement that he, a billionaire, and his millionaire players do not feel like they are part of the United States was the death knell for Cuban’s often stated interest in running for president.

Once the story broke, though, the NBA quickly shot down Cuban’s plan and told him he must play the anthem whether he likes it or not, “in keeping with longstanding league policy.”

Brewer slammed Cuban’s decision to end the playing of the anthem and noted that the American people “do not want to see” the anthem eliminated. He added that Cuban’s actions are “total disrespect” and a “slap in their faces” of the American people.

“I can’t believe that Mark Cuban did this,” a shocked Brewer said.

“You got to remember, the NBA has taken a stand. They have felt the pains of supporting anti-family BLM movements,” Brewer concluded. “They felt the pain of supporting anti-American rhetoric. Their ratings dropped over 40 percent last year from doing that. They have taken a stand to stand for the American flag. God bless them for doing it. And then Mark Cuban goes out and goes against them. His presidential future is over officially from this episode.”

Cuban played with running for president in 2016 when Donald Trump ran against Hillary Clinton. He also mulled the idea in 2020 when Trump ran for re-election. In 2019, Cuban said that “if the circumstances were right” he would throw his hat in the ring for a White House run. And last year he again noted that he is “keeping the door open” for a presidential campaign.

Still, as far as Brewer sees it, Cuban’s proud proclamations opposing the national anthem would likely end anyone’s interest in putting the NBA owner in the White House.

It’s Time to Get Mad, About Teacher’s Union’s

When schools across the nation closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, few would have predicted that large swathes of the United States, almost alone among nations in the Western world, would remain closed through 2021. Yet this has happened. We have only begun to see the consequences: an epidemic of youth suicides in Las Vegas, “off the rails” student failure rates in Oregon, and children’s hospitals reporting surges in mental health crises nationwide.

This was not forced upon us by fate or nature. Even as the Continent ordered an unprecedented second incarceration of its residents in late fall 2020, Europe mostly kept schools open.

School closures are a choice that American policymakers made and continue to make. But as the toll on our children becomes clearer, we must ask why.

A Country Held Hostage

There are at least 2.3 billion reasons why schools remain shuttered in most of the country—the $2.3 billion given by government worker unions, most prominently the teachers unions the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers—to politicians and ballot campaigns over the past three decades.

And how do these malevolent forces on American life justify their insistence that they be given the power to hold American economic and social life hostage to obtain demands explicitly including socialized medicine, massive tax increases, and defunding the police? Just ask the  (CTU), perhaps the most malevolent of these self-interested radical-Left factions. (Recall, a CTU staffer was caught on vacation in Puerto Rico while the union was insisting real school was “unsafe.”)

Six of our rank-and-file dance teachers come together to use their art form as a voice to express their desire to feel safe amidst CPS’ teacher return policy. They stand in solidarity with all educators at risk, because no one should have to choose between life and livelihood.

So take your side: Do you stand with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which released research finding “little evidence that schools have contributed meaningfully to increased community transmission” and with students who are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis, or do you stand with radical socialist interpretive dance?

The Biden administration has all but stated that it sides with the radical socialist interpretive dancers. State governors and municipal officials—with very rare exceptions, among them Govs. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Kim Reynolds (R-IA)—have chosen the path of least resistance, handing their swords to the radical dancers without a fight. After all, unions will spend billions to fight against them; parents are too busy chasing their children.

What Can Be Done?

So what can be done? Get mad. Be mad as hell, and don’t take it anymore. Refuse to fear the insane rhetoric—no, Washington State teachers unions, opening schools is not “white supremacy” and it never will be—and tell everyone you know that you’re mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.

The teacher’s unions are counting on parents being too tired, too busy, and too afraid to stand up and say publicly: “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore.” Until that happens, the radical socialist interpretive dancers will win because no one is opposing them.

NYS Division of Consumer Protection Warns About Online Dating Scams As Valentine’s Day Approaches

This Valentine’s Day, New Yorkers Should Follow Simple Tips When Using Online Dating Platforms

Online “Sweetheart Scams” Are Common Practice & Steal Millions Each Year

In advance of Valentine’s Day, the New York State Division of Consumer Protection today alerted people about online dating scams known as “sweetheart scams,” in which scammers pretend to be dream partners and instead steal personal information and money from victims. According to statistics from the Federal Trade Commission, overall losses in this kind of scam are about $200 million a year.

“During the pandemic, people may be feeling especially lonely due to prolonged periods of isolation, leading people to seek connections online,” said Secretary of State Rossana Rosado. “This Valentine’s Day, I encourage New Yorkers who are looking for an online love connection to follow basic safety tips to avoid losing their hard-earned money through false promises.”

How to Spot a Sweetheart Scam

Although almost any age group can be lured into this scam, the number one target of sweetheart scams is usually men and women over age 40. Seniors, especially widows, widowers and recent divorcees, are particularly vulnerable to this kind of manipulation. However, it’s important to recognize that scammers will target anyone they think they can exploit.

Scammers will go to great lengths to create the illusion of someone you would be attracted to and trust. They often use pictures from the internet for their profile and may disguise their voice on the phone. To build trust with their victims, scammers will want to talk or message several times a day and may even send small gifts to express their deep affection towards to their victims.

A frequent tactic is for scammers to claim to live a long distance from their victim, often an American abroad or a deployed soldier. This allows the scammer to draw out the relationship without having to meet in person. Some scammers may eventually propose an in-person meeting, claiming they will travel to see you, but there will be a last-minute emergency preventing it from happening.

Eventually, the scammers will request a large sum of money, usually as a loan, to be wired to them for things ranging from business investments, property, debts, illness, and more. They may even ask for money for airfare so they can visit you. Once they receive the money, the scammer will often ask for more or create a new reason they need to borrow money. This will continue until the victim becomes suspicious, at which point the scammer will usually stop all contact and disappear.

Here are some tips to protect yourself from online dating scams:

  • Never give or loan money to someone that you have not met in person.
  • Do not give out personal information to someone online, especially if you have not met them before.
  • Use trusted online dating sites, but still exercise caution.
  • Be cautious of people you meet online who say they are an American abroad or a deployed soldier.
  • Schedule a video-chat early in the relationship to ensure they are the person they are presenting in their profile.
  • Do a reverse image search of the person’s profile picture. If it is linked to another name or details that don’t line up, it’s likely a scam.
  • Avoid people online who ask for money, even if it’s due to an emergency or a traumatic life incident. They are almost always scammers.
  • If a consumer has fallen victim to a sweetheart scam, they are encouraged to file a complaint with the Division of Consumer Protection. Consumer complaints can be filed at any time at www.dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection serves to educate, assist and empower the State’s consumers. United: Small electric air taxis will zip people to airports

0
AP

(AP) — United Airlines said Wednesday it will buy up to 200 small electric air taxis to help customers in urban areas get to the airport.

The airline said it will help electric-aircraft startup Archer develop an aircraft capable of helicopter-style, vertical takeoffs and landings. Archer hopes to deliver its first aircraft in 2024, if it wins certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.

United said once the aircraft are flying, it and partner Mesa Airlines will acquire up to 200 that would be operated by another company.

According to an Archer presentation to investors, the orders are worth $1 billion with an option for $500 million more.

Privately held Archer, which is based in Palo Alto, California, announced separately that it has agreed to merge with Atlas Crest Investment Corp. and form a new publicly traded company. Archer and Atlas put a $3.8 billion value on the deal, which sent Atlas shares up 22%.

Archer’s aircraft are designed to fly under battery power for up to 60 miles (97 kilometers) at speeds of up to 150 mph (240 kph).

The company plans to launch service in congested areas close to airports. United estimated the air taxis could shuttle people from Hollywood to Los Angeles International Airport at about half the carbon emissions per passenger.

Cowen analyst Helane Becker said United could use Archer’s aircraft could operate between New York City and United’s hub operation at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey, or from downtown Chicago to O’Hare Airport, allowing airline customers to avoid traffic.

Chicago-based United portrayed the move as part of a broader plan to invest in technology behind cleaner modes of air travel. CEO Scott Kirby said Archer’s design “has the clear potential to change how people commute within major metropolitan cities all over the world.”

Aviation is a small contributor to greenhouse gases that cause climate change, but its share of the problem is growing rapidly. Many airlines including United have made investments in biofuel, but limited supplies are likely to hinder wider use of such alternatives to jet fuel for many years.

In December, United pledged to offset all its carbon emissions by 2050 in part by investing in technology to remove carbon from the air and bury it.

Anti-Trump Hysteria Lives on : Highlights of The 3rd Day of Impeachment Hearings

0
AP

(TJVNEWS.COM) House members continued to present a dramatic second 8 hours of anti-Trump hysteria, as the second impeachment trial of the former president continued for the 3rd day. The language was more dramatic than ever, as the Democratic party, 3 weeks into President Biden’s administration, is still razor-focused on Trump.

If you lose track of time and forget that it’s February of 2021, you might think Trump is still president.

Rep. David Cicilline dug into Trump saying: “Trump chose himself above the people, above our institutions, above our democracy, above all of you.” Cicilline detailing all of the injuries Capitol police officers suffered because of the insurrection Trump “incited.” He asked  Senators to listen to how the “Trump mob” is cursing at and pushing police officers. “So much for backing the blue,” Cicilline says. Cicilline, loving the sound of his own voice declared” Never did any of us imagine that we or our colleagues would face mortal peril by a mob riled up by the president of the United States, the leader of the free world.”

The exploitation of officer  Brian D. Sicknick’s was heavily used to make the case against President Trump, Sicknick died after working at the capitol the day of the January 6th riots. Reports initially indicated that Sidenick died from injuries sustained from being hit with a fire extinguisher. It was later revealed by Sidenick’s family members that he never mentioned being attacked with a fire extinguisher, and sources told ABC News that his death was triggered by medical conditions. The officer did engage in confrontations with the rioters and got pepper-sprayed.

Rep. Ted Lieu: “We’re all aware that a violent mob murdered a police officer. It took President Trump three days before he lowered the flag of the United States of America –– three days.”

Lieu said  Trump doesn’t deserve a “mulligan” because he didn’t make a “mistake.” He says people show “remorse” if they made a “mistake” and Trump never did. Lieu says Trump only showed “defiance” and was telling us that he would do this again. Lieu says Trump still has not said that the election was not stolen, and that is why there are still National Guardsmen outside the Capitol.

Rep. Jamie Raskin gave America an encore of the last 4 years, connecting Trump to racism, and in MSNBC like fashion declared: “But no matter how many people inside and outside government begged him (Trump) to condemn extreme elements promoting violence, and indeed civil war in America and race war in America, he just wouldn’t do it.” The invasion of the capitol had nothing to do with race or a race war obviously, it was based on the election results.

Raskin blatantly lied at one point blaming conservatives for the burning of the St. John’s Episcopal Church on Lafayette Square, which was done by leftist BLM insurrectionists, not Trump supporters.  Raskin deliberately conflated the summer incident where violent BLM activists tried to burn down the historic Church with an incident where an unhinged  Trump supporter burned a BLM banner outside a “progressive” church during the 2nd Pro-Trump rally in DC late last year.  No conservative, Trump supporter, or Proud Boy member burned down a church.

Raskin said Rep. DeGette explained in “chilling detail” how the insurrectionists did what Trump told them to do. He claims Trump “cultivated” extremist insurrectionist groups to ready them for their most “dangerous mission”–to keep Trump in office. Raskin says Trump “road-tested” tactics for January 6. He talked about Trump’s “pattern and practice” of “inciting violence.”

Rep. Diana DeGette: “He invited them with clear instructions for a specific time and place. And with clear orders. Stop the fight… to fight to stop the certification in Congress by any means necessary.”  She recalled her experience on January 6. She said she saw police officers pulling their guns as rioters tried to get on the House floor. She says she saw SWAT teams pointing automatic weapons at “marauders” on the floor as she was being escorted to safety. She says the statements of the insurrectionists make clear that the attack was done for Trump, at his instruction. She said Trump “sent them there.” She says many tagged Trump in tweets after taking photos. She plays a video of the crowd cheering after Trump says “stop the steal.” She says Trump basked after the crowd chanted “fight for Trump.” She says the crowd responded “storm the Capitol” and “invade the Capitol” after Trump told them to “show strength.”
