Israeli Plan to Share Vaccines Frozen by legal Questions

(AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial plan to ship surplus coronavirus vaccines to a group of allied nations was frozen Thursday following a legal challenge to the deal, his office announced.

It was the latest twist in a saga that has raised questions at home about Netanyahu’s decision-making authority as well as his move to help far-flung nations in Africa and Latin America at a time when the neighboring Palestinian territories are struggling to secure their own vaccine supplies. The plan has also illustrated how at a time of global shortages, the vaccine has become an asset that can be used for diplomatic gain.

Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that he had personally decided to share small quantities of surplus Israeli vaccines with allied nations. He did not identify the countries, but an Israeli TV station said they included a number of nations that have supported Israel’s claims to the contested city of Jerusalem as its capital.

Netanyahu’s governing partner and rival, Defense Minister Benny Gantz, on Thursday called for a halt in the shipments, saying Israel’s stockpile of vaccines is the property of the state. He attacked the prime minister’s go-it-alone approach and questioned Netanyahu’s claims that there are really excess supplies when Israelis still have not been fully vaccinated.

“This is not the first time that significant defense and diplomatic decisions are being made behind the backs of the relevant bodies, while possibly damaging our national security, our foreign relations, and the rule of law,” Gantz wrote. “This is a pattern which impinges upon our ability to manage the country soundly.”

He demanded the matter be brought before the country’s Security Cabinet for discussions and said he had asked the attorney general for an opinion.

Late Thursday, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit said he had received a number of requests to review Netanyahu’s decision. One of those requests, he said, came from Netanyahu’s national security adviser, who told him he had been instructed to “freeze any action on the matter.”

An official in Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the national security adviser had asked for the delay in response to the legal challenge. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to talk to the media.

Despite the freeze, Israel’s Army radio station reported that one delivery had already landed in Honduras.

Netanyahu, who is up for reelection on March 23, has staked his political success on Israel’s successful vaccination drive, in which about half of the country’s 9.3 million people have been inoculated in just under two months.

Deputy Health Minister Yoav Kisch, a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, told army radio that Gantz was jealous “of Netanyahu’s achievements” and said Israel had more than enough vaccines to share with friends. He described the mission as a “strategic and political move at zero cost.”

Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel has hundreds of thousands of surplus vaccines. He said some extras were being shared in response to requests from allies as a mostly symbolic thank-you “in return for things we already have received.”

The revelation was striking because Israel has received widespread international condemnation for sharing only a small fraction of virus-fighting shots with the Palestinians. Israeli this month shared just 2,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine with the Palestinian Authority to immunize front-line medical workers.

“As the occupying power, Israel is responsible for the health of all the people under its control,” tweeted U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. “It is outrageous that Netanyahu would use spare vaccines to reward his foreign allies while so many Palestinians in the occupied territories are still waiting.”

U.N. officials and human rights groups say Israel is an occupying power responsible for the well-being of the Palestinians. Israel says that under interim peace accords from the 1990s it has no such obligations. It notes that it has vaccinated its own Arab population, including Palestinians who live in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

A list obtained by an Israeli TV station included a number of nations that have supported Israel’s claim to Jerusalem, including Honduras, Guatemala and the Czech Republic. African countries with close or budding relations with Israel also appeared, including Chad, Mauritania, Uganda and Kenya.

In his letter, Gantz noted that the decision to share vaccines with the Palestinians was made after consultations involving various government ministries. He said he could not understand why Netanyahu’s latest move was “never broached in relevant forums.”

Gantz and Netanyahu are fierce rivals who battled to stalemates in three consecutive elections before agreeing last year to form an emergency government.

Their power-sharing arrangement was beset by mutual distrust, highlighted by Netanyahu’s moves to reach a number of diplomatic pacts with Arab countries last year without informing Gantz ahead of time.

In December, their coalition collapsed, and the country is heading to its fourth election in two years next month.

Netanyahu’s Likud is projected to be the largest party in parliament after the election, but it is not clear whether he and his hardline allies will control a majority of seats. Gantz’s Blue and White party, meanwhile, has plummeted and is struggling to win the minimum number of votes to remain in parliament.

ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC Ignore Andrew Cuomo Sex Harassment Claim

America’s three most prominent networks–ABC, NBC, and CBS–ignored any mention of sexual harassment claims against Gov. Andrew Cuomo during their evening news programs Wednesday. CNN and MSNBC also declined to address the scandal.

According to transcripts, ABC’s World News Tonight, CBS’s Evening News, and NBC’s Nightly News made no mention of the embattled Cuomo, who is also facing calls for his impeachment and resignation after he was accused of covering up the number of deaths from the coronavirus in state nursing homes following his controversial order that these facilities accept coronavirus-positive patients.

Cuomo’s former deputy secretary for economic development and special adviser Lindsey Boylan alleged on Wednesday in an essay published on the website Medium that the governor went “out of his way to touch me on my lower back, arms and legs,” forcibly kissed her on the lips during a one-on-one briefing, and suggested they “play strip poker” during a plane ride.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) later on Wednesday called for Cuomo to resign in the wake of twin scandals over his handling of data on coronavirus deaths in the state’s nursing homes and allegations of sexual harassment by a former aide.

Boylan’s allegations come as Cuomo’s administration is under investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn following reports that the governor’s top aide told Democrat lawmakers officials withheld the nursing home data due to concerns that the figures could “be used against us” in a federal investigation.

Manhattan prosecutor gets Trump tax records after long fight

(AP) — A New York prosecutor has obtained copies of Donald Trump’s tax records after the Supreme Court this week rejected the former president’s last-ditch effort to prevent them from being handed over.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office enforced a subpoena on Trump’s accounting firm within hours of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Monday and now has the documents in hand, a spokesperson for the office, Danny Frost, said Thursday.

District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. had been fighting for a year and a half for access to Trump’s tax records for a criminal grand jury investigation into his business dealings. The documents are protected by grand jury secrecy rules and are not expected to be made public.

Vance, a Democrat, is conducting a wide-ranging investigation that includes an examination of whether Trump or his businesses lied about the value of assets to gain favorable loan terms and tax benefits. The district attorney is also scrutinizing hush-money payments paid to women on Trump’s behalf.

Vance’s office issued a subpoena to Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, in August 2019 seeking eight years of his tax returns and related documents.

Trump’s lawyers immediately went to court to block its enforcement, first arguing that he was immune from being investigated while president.

When the Supreme Court rejected that argument 7-2 last July, Trump’s lawyers returned to a lower court and argued the subpoena was issued in bad faith, overly broad, might have been politically motivated and amounted to harassment. An appellate court rejected that argument and the Supreme Court on Monday declined to intervene.

In a three-word statement after the Supreme Court ruled on Monday, Vance said only: “The work continues.”

Trump has called Vance’s investigation “a fishing expedition” and “a continuation of the witch hunt — the greatest witch hunt in history.”

Vance is leading the investigation along with his general counsel, Carey Dunne, who made arguments on behalf of the office at various appellate court hearings. Vance recently hired former mafia prosecutor Mark Pomerantz as a special assistant district attorney to assist in the probe.

Vance, whose term expires at the end of the year, hasn’t announced if he will seek reelection, leaving questions about who will lead any Trump-related prosecutions in the future.

Vance’s subpoena sought from Mazars USA not only the final versions of Trump’s tax returns, but also draft versions of those returns and “any and all statements of financial condition, annual statements, periodic financial reports, and independent auditors’ reports” held by the company.

Mazars did not object to the subpoena and, in a statement at the time, said it would “respect the legal process and fully comply with its legal obligations.”

The Mazars subpoena also sought engagement agreements that define the accountants’ role in creating the tax returns and financial statements; source documents providing the accountants with raw financial data; and work papers and communications between the firm and Trump representatives.

Those would include communications showing how the raw data was analyzed and treated in the preparation of the records.

The New York Times separately obtained years of Trump’s tax data and published stories last year detailing some of his finances, including that he paid just $750 in federal income tax in 2017 and no income tax in 11 of 18 years because of major losses.

One of the World’s Oldest Complete Esther Scrolls Finds its Final Home at the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem

0
  • “Incredibly rare” ca. 1465 Iberian scroll is one of few pre-Spanish Expulsion megillot in existence
  • It has been digitized and is available online for the first time

One of the world’s oldest known Esther scrolls (also known as a “megillah“) has recently been gifted to the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem, home to the world’s largest collection of textual Judaica, where it has also been made available online for the first time.

Esther scrolls contain the story of the Book of Esther in Hebrew and are traditionally read in Jewish communities across the globe on the festival of Purim, which will take place on February 25-28 this year.

Scholars have determined that the newly received Esther scroll was written by a scribe on the Iberian Peninsula around 1465, prior to the Spanish and Portuguese Expulsions at the end of the fifteenth century. These conclusions are based on both stylistic and scientific evidence, including Carbon-14 dating.

The megillah is written in brown ink on leather in an elegant, characteristic Sephardic script, which resembles that of a Torah scroll. The first panel, before the text of the Book of Esther, includes the traditional blessings recited before and after the reading of the megillah, and attests to the ritual use of this scroll in a pre-Expulsion Iberian Jewish community.

According to experts, there are very few extant Esther scrolls from the medieval period in general, and from the fifteenth century, in particular. Torah scrolls and Esther scrolls from pre-Expulsion Spain and Portugal are even rarer, with only a small handful known to exist.

Prior to the donation, this scroll was the only complete fifteenth century megillah in private hands.

The medieval scroll is a gift from Michael Jesselson and family, continuing long-standing family support of the National Library of Israel and its collections. Michael’s father, Ludwig Jesselson, was the founding chair of the International Council of the Library (then known as the “Jewish National and University Library”) and a strong leader and advocate of the Library for decades.

According to Dr. Yoel Finkelman, curator of the National Library of Israel’s Haim and Hanna Salomon Judaica Collection, the new addition is “an incredibly rare testament to the rich material culture of the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula.  It is one of the earliest extant Esther Scrolls, and one of the few 15th century megillot in the world.  The Library is privileged to house this treasure and to preserve the legacy of pre-Expulsion Iberian Jewry for the Jewish people and the world.”

NBC Blasted for ‘Dangerous, Pernicious’ Attack on Orthodox Jews

0

By Shiryn Ghermezian, The Algemeiner

For the second time this week, NBC is facing broad condemnation from top Jewish organizations, for a scene in the television show “Nurses” that features an Orthodox Jewish character who refuses a bone graft because it might have come from “goyim” — a Yiddish word for non-Jews — an Arab or a woman.

On Wednesday, NBC pulled the offending episode from its digital platforms in response to the outcry.

In episode 8 of the show’s first season, which aired in the US on Feb. 9, a young Hasidic man named Israel suffers a leg injury playing basketball, even though his father wanted him to be in the synagogue praying. He is told by hospital staff that a bone graft from a deceased donor is his only option for recovery, but he refuses the procedure.

The character’s father is outraged at the possibility of his son receiving a graft from, “A goyim leg, from anyone; an Arab, a woman?”

“Or god forbid, an Arab woman,” retorts a nurse, sarcastically.

In a later scene, Israel explains that he is refusing the bone graft because “how can I live with myself knowing I went against God, or my father. He’ll never accept me.”

After a clip from the episode began circulating on social media on Tuesday, leading Jewish organizations responded furiously.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, told The Algemeiner, “The portrayal of a Hasidic Jew making hateful remarks about ‘an Arab, a woman’ is gratuitous and inflammatory, and only validates longstanding antisemitic stereotypes.”

He explained that in Jewish law, “anything that is potentially lifesaving or health-preserving is not only permitted but indeed mandated” and added, “Unfortunately, myths about Jewish religious beliefs and practices are far too commonplace, and this episode only serves to amplify such longstanding misperceptions about Jews. We have reached out to NBC executives and have requested that they pull the episode and review their standards for approving dramatic content so that this doesn’t happen in the future.”

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told The Algemeiner, “The writers of this scene check all the boxes of ignorance and pernicious negative stereotypes right down to the name of the patient, Israel — payos [sidelocks] and all.”

“In one scene NBC has insulted and demonized religious Jews and Judaism,” he said. “Orthodox Jews are targeted for violent hate crimes in the city of New York [and] Jews are [the] number one target of hate crimes in US. This is no slip of the tongue. It was a vile cheap attack masquerading as TV drama. What’s NBC going to do about it?”

“Nurses” is produced by Toronto’s ICF Films, Entertainment One and Corus Entertainment. It is filmed and set in Toronto, and was acquired by NBC in 2020. The offending episode originally aired in Canada a year ago.

B’nai Brith Canada called on the producers of the show to apologize and take action for the “inaccurate and offensive stereotypes against Hasidic Jew[s].”

“B’nai Brith’s view is that this inaccurate plot line perpetuates false and dangerous anti-Semitic stereotypes about Jews – Hasidic and Orthodox Jews in particular – hating women, Arabs or non-Jews in general,” the group said in a statement.

“The disturbing stereotypes present in this episode of ‘Nurses’ are deeply damaging to Jews, especially Orthodox practitioners,” said B’nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn. “We call on the producers to act responsibly and take accountability for this outrage. All of this could have been avoided if producers had thought to consult members of the Orthodox Jewish community before depicting them in this false and slanderous light.”

The scandal comes after NBC faced criticism for a joke about Israel made on “Saturday Night Live” on Feb. 20.

“Twice in one week, @NBC?” the American Jewish Committee asked on Twitter. “First we heard Michael Che’s anti-Semitic falsehood on @NBCSNL. Now ‘Nurses’ employs this disgusting depiction of Orthodox Jews. Continuous, negative portrayal of Jews invites anti-Semitism to flourish. This must stop.”

The AJC’s head of young leadership Seffi Kogen shared on Twitter the clip from the “Nurses” episode and wrote: “I think this is the most antisemitic thing I have ever seen in a TV show.” In a follow-up tweet he added that “there is no prohibition on the kind of bone graft in this clip. The writers made it up, dressed their actors in Jew-face, and put random extremist nonsense in their mouths.”

StandWithUs Executive Director Michael Dickinson on Twitter slammed NBC for its “GROSS anti-Jewish stereotype” on “Nurses,” saying it has “zero basis in reality.” He added, “At a time when antisemitic attacks are rising, this horrible, provocative misrepresentation is nothing less than dangerous.”

StopAntisemitism.org said,“First @nbcsnl now @nbc ‘Nurses’ airs a viciously antisemitic episode filled with lies about Orthodox Jews. Lies and libels lead to VIOLENCE!”

NBC did not immediately respond to The Algemeiner‘s request for a comment.

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to include NBC’s decision to pull the episode.

Law Enforcement Confirms What We Already Knew About The Capitol Riots, Obliterates Democrats’ Narrative

AP

By Jeff Charles(Red State)

Here’s something the Democrats hope you will miss.

Law enforcement officials testifying before a joint Senate hearing on Tuesday confirmed their belief that the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol building was planned before the day of the event. This information completely annihilates the Democrats’ narrative regarding the assault on the Capitol building.

The Hill reported, “Top current and former law enforcement officials testifying Tuesday before a joint Senate hearing on the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol told lawmakers that evidence pointed to coordination and planning behind the mob of people that overwhelmed Capitol Police officers during the attack.”

Former Capitol police chief Steven Sund told members of the Senate that several factors led the authorities to believe that the riots were preplanned, and not spontaneous as Democrats have suggested.

“I’m able to provide you a quick overview of why I think it was a coordinated attack. One, people came specifically with equipment. You’re bringing in climbing gear to a demonstration. You’re bringing in explosives. You’re bringing in chemical spray … you’re coming prepared,” he explained.

The former police chief also noted the pipe bombs outside of the Democratic and Republican party headquarters. He indicated that they were likely placed to distract law enforcement from the Capitol during the assault on the Capitol.

Acting D.C. Metropolitan Police chief Robert Contee III concurred with Sund’s assessment. He told lawmakers that he saw “hand signals being used by several of the insurrectionists,” along with communication via radio being used by others.

“A number of individuals linked to various right-wing groups, including the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, have been arrested in the weeks following the attack in connection to the violence, while the FBI’s D.C. field office is currently searching for dozens of other people present during the attack,” according to The Hill.

Remember when the Democrats based their entire impeachment case on the notion that former President Donald Trump incited the assault on the Capitol in the speech he gave at the rally? Have you seen how they still pretend that the entire incident was his fault? Well, this story further debunks their deceptive narrative.

Still, it is evident that none of this matters to the left because they already know that their arguments are false. They were as dishonest with this matter as they were about Russia collusion. But, it’s no surprise that they have resorted to this level of deception. It’s easier than debating the issues, isn’t it?

Rabbis blast US ‘Equality Act’ for calling Bible ‘bigoted’, attacking religious values

0

By World Israel News Staff

The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), an American rabbinic group, called on Wednesday for the rejection of the Equality Act as “a direct attack on Jewish religious values and practices.”

The Equality Act, H.R. 5, is slated to be voted on Thursday in the House of Representatives.

For example, the text refers to “the sex stereotype that marriage should only be between heterosexual couples” as a discriminatory belief.

In the letter, the rabbis say:

“The Equality Act expressly declares that the Book of Genesis [see 2:24] and all of the Jewish laws pertaining to marriage as a sanctified union between man and woman (called “kiddushin” in Hebrew, from the word “kadosh,” Holy) are nothing more than engagement in discriminatory stereotypes. This is a disgraceful attack upon Jewish Biblical beliefs, rendered no more excusable by the fact that other traditional religious groups have similar tenets.”

The letter also lists other aspects of observant Jewish practices which would be grounds for a discrimination complaint under the proposed legislation, including separate seating at weddings, single-gender dancing, and even separate hours for swimming.

“A law which would require recognition of the gender a person prefers to be… would demand we cease to operate in accordance with our sincerely held beliefs, moral values and religious education — expressly violating our religious liberty,” the rabbis said.

“It is outrageous that Congress would declare us bigoted for simply maintaining our time-honored traditions,” said Rabbi Avrohom Gordimer, chairman of the CJV Rabbinic Circle.

“And it is no mere insult; the law even explicitly rejects religious freedom as a defense, meaning it provides Anti-Semites with a new way to persecute the religious Jewish community,” Gordimer said.

Spanish-Jewish `Nobility’ of Aleppo, Syria

0

Anne de Sola-Cardoza

As recently as 1992, more than 4,000 Jews were being held against their will in Syria, unable to leave and kept under watch, branded as “Mussawi,” followers of Moses. At that time, 50,000 Jews from Syria lived in Brooklyn’s Flatbush area. The rest of “little Aleppo” were spread across the United States and Latin America, but little was known of the past of these Sephardic Jews.

[An earlier version of this article appeared in AVOTAYNU, from which current subscriptions and access to back issues can be obtained at www.Avotaynu.com]

For the most part they are descendants of the Spanish-Jewish nobility that at first had settled in Livorno, Italy, after 1492. The noble Jewish families of the Spanish court bore such names as Lumbroso, Laniado, Sason, Blanco, Franco, Athias, Salas, Nunes, Garzon and Lofez.

When ships carrying the best of the Spanish-Jewish nobility—Jewish astronomers, map makers, philosophers and courtiers who had worked their way up into the noble houses of Castile and Aragon — arrived in 15th century Syria, they found only about 400 Jewish families living there. The native Jews, who had lived in Aleppo for thousands of years, introduced the signoreem, as these Italian/Spanish Jews were called, to the Aleppo Codex, or keter (crown) of Aleppo, a famous rabbinical document, well-known in the world of Orthodox Sephardic Jewry.

Aleppo-Jewish201914The Mustarabeen of Aleppo (native Arab Jews, as the Spanish called them) claim direct descent from King David through the Dayyan family of Syria, said to be living there since 70 C.E. These Jews had lived in Syria since the destruction of the second temple and perhaps even earlier. By the time the Spanish emigration was completed, Aleppo Jewry numbered nearly 30,000.

Spanish and Portuguese Jews kept themselves a class apart from the Arab Jews of Syria. This branch of Sephardic Jewry had brought its wealth, gold platters, priceless paintings and banking fortunes with them from Spain and bought up the most elegant homes in Aleppo.

A few of the many wealthy or noble Spanish-Jewish families’ names were surnames such as:

Abigdor (via North Africa)
Anteby
Ashear
Ashkenazie
Attia
Azari
Blanca
Cohen
Douec
Escava
Esses
Franco
Gomez
Grazi
Hanan

Hedaya
Hidary
Labaton
Laniado (Spanish Jews from Venice)
Levi

At first, marriage was discouraged between Spanish Jews living in Aleppo and native Arab Jews of the area. By the turn of the 19th century, however, intermarriage between the two groups had been accepted, although Spanish surnames still are common among Syrian Jews from Aleppo and Damascus, Syria, and Alexandria, Egypt. Syrian Jews still maintain a “class of gentility” in which the highest “class” refers to itself as signores — relating to their origins in Venice, Italy, in the 16th century, after having left Spain a century earlier.

Home Life

The Spanish Jews of Aleppo built elegant homes apart from the generally dingy apartments of the native Syrian Jews. By 1900, visitors to Aleppo noted that the residences of the Sephardim from Spain were self-contained villages, each with its own suppliers of food and services, including tailors, bakers and grocers. Each Spanish quarter had its own basita, or administrator.

Native Syrian Jews, in contrast, lived in small apartments or rooms called the “hosh.” Poor families of Arabic-speaking Jews, in contrast to the Ladino-speaking Spanish Jews, shared a communal kitchen and outhouse. A well in the hosh courtyard supplied water, and until 1930, there was no electricity for the less wealthy Jews of Aleppo.

The Aleppo properties of the Ladino-speaking Jews from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece were luxurious, with stone carvings of angels on the walls (called the Shemaya). Ladino homes in Damascus were even more elegant. Interior walls of these elite homes were covered with priceless paintings brought from Spain, Italy and other countries, along with hidden wealth. Frescoes covered the walls, and balconies often were decorated with elaborately carved wooden panels. In Aleppo, Damascus and Alexandria, the “court” Jews of Spain set up their own Jewish quarters and synagogues.

Wealthy Syrian Jews never did their own shopping; a trusted business associate was hired to do the bargaining. The custom of having the food delivered to the house was carried over when Sephardic Jews emigrated to Latin America and the United States. In contrast to the life of hardship in Eastern European ghettos, Sephardim had their own servants. They took their families on vacation to resorts in the Lebanese mountains, since there was no Pale of Settlement or travel barrier. Life at the turn of the 20th century was abundant for wealthy Syrian Jews. By contrast, life was very bad for the poor Arab Jews who had to bear the Jew-baiting of poor Moslem and Christian neighbors with whom they shared communal apartments, courtyards, outhouses and kitchens.

Spanish Jews, called Spanioli, were regarded as the franj (foreigners) who retained the Ladino language and their own class status apart from the poor gentiles and Moslems. The wealthier families could buy protection and tolerance in many instances, although life was never truly secure. The higher class Jewish residential area in the 1930s was called the Jamilia.

Until the turn of the 20th century, almost all Jews in Aleppo lived in the center of the ancient city within the confines of the Bahista, a Spanish-culture enclave. The Bahista contained the Spanish (Ladino) synagogue and the Arabic-speaking synagogue, Bet Nassi. Almost all Spanish Jews in Syria spoke fluent Arabic as well as Ladino. Toward the end of the 18th century, Arabic became their everyday language, and Spanish was no longer used, except by the Jews 60 miles to the north in Turkey, and those Sephardim in Greece, the Balkan countries, Holland and Latin America.

At the end of the day, the Sephardim of Aleppo typically went to a Jewish cafe to hear an elaborate Spanish-Jewish musical ensemble called el Nobe in Spanish and a nobeh in Arabic. It is composed of a singer and several players of stringed instruments and drums, derbekcy in Arabic. Songs were either Pismoneem (Hebrew prayers and poems sung to popular Arabic songs), Spanish songs set to Arabic music, or popular Arabic songs in Arabic. Usually the entire family would come to El Nobe to conclude a business deal or act as a matchmaker between families. Often they would partake of a hot orange blossom-flavored mild custard topped with ice cold fruit marinated in raisin wine, called Morena me Ilaman, named after a Sephardic song of 1495.

The Washington Post’ Wants To Pick Israel’s Leader

(JNS/ Sean Durns) – The Washington Post’s editorial board has a fixation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Post’s board has devoted considerable column space to attacking the democratically elected leader of the Jewish state. But the obsession, and frequently unhinged tone, reveals more about the newspaper and its attitudes toward Israel than it does about the Israeli leader.

The Post’s latest blast appeared in a Feb. 17, 2021 editorial titled “Biden delivers a snub to Israel’s Netanyahu—and for good reason.” The Post hailed the fact that “during the first four weeks of the new U.S. administration,” President Joe Biden “spoke by phone with the leaders of virtually every major U.S. ally, along with those of Russia and China. But he did not call Mr. Netanyahu” until Feb. 16.

The Post claimed that if the belated call was a snub, it was justified, as “Mr. Netanyahu has a long history of allying himself with U.S. Republicans and of seeking to aid GOP presidential candidates.” Netanyahu, the Post asserts, had the temerity to travel to “Washington to endorse Mr. Trump’s soon-to-be stillborn Middle East peace plan” on the eve of an election. Even worse, the Post argues, Netanyahu has noted that he has “disagreements on Iran, on the Palestinian issue” with the new administration. How dare he!

Accordingly, the Post says, “striking a measure of distance from the Israeli leader is a wise move,” particularly since he is facing upcoming elections.

This isn’t the first recent broadside aimed at Netanyahu. As CAMERA highlighted in a JNS op-ed, in December 2020, Post editorial board member Jackson Diehl even compared Netanyahu to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin—a comparison that not only illustrates the paper’s hostility but speaks to its detachment from reality.

It is also curious, if not a bit hypocritical, for the Post to claim that by visiting Washington to sign the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords, Netanyahu sought to influence an American election—only to simultaneously celebrate the possible political ramifications of a delayed call by the Biden administration on upcoming Israeli elections. Indeed, the United States has a long track record of doing precisely what the editorial board upbraids Netanyahu for allegedly doing.

In 2016, a U.S. congressional investigation revealed that the Obama administration’s State Department “paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayers grants to an Israeli group that used the money to build a campaign to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu” in 2015 elections. And in a 2018 interview with Israel’s Channel 10 News, former President Bill Clinton admitted that he “tried to help Shimon Peres win Israel’s general elections in 1996 against Benjamin Netanyahu,” as The Times of Israel reported at the time.

The Post, of course, omits this context, preferring to blame Israel’s democratically elected leader for any strains, be it past, present or future, in the U.S.-Israel relationship. The newspaper adds:

“Mr. Biden would also be right to avoid the mistake of President Barack Obama, who thought he could work with Mr. Netanyahu to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and persisted long after it became clear the effort was futile. Mr. Biden’s secretary of state, Antony Blinken, has rightly set the more modest goal of preserving the possibility of Palestinian statehood for the day when Israel and the Palestinians have better leaders.”

Yet this, too, is misleading and revisionist. As CAMERA has documented, top Obama administration officials were on record as seeking to create “daylight” in the U.S.-Israel relationship. That was a decision by a U.S. administration, not an Israeli one. Nor does the newspaper tell readers that in both 2014 and 2016, Israel, with Netanyahu at the helm, accepted U.S. proposals to restart Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. In both instances, it was the Palestinian leadership that rejected those proposals—just as it had rejected U.S. and Israeli offers for a Palestinian state in exchange for peace in 2000, 2001 and 2008, among other instances.

It is false to imply, as the Post does, that Israeli and Palestinian leaders are equally responsible for the lack of a Palestinian state. One set has consistently accepted statehood and peace, while the other has consistently rejected precisely that. In fact, the Post itself has noted as much, including in a Dec. 29, 2016 column by the editorial board which acknowledged that “Netanyahu has received no [Obama] White House credit” for actions like “settlement freezes” that were undertaken at U.S. request in the forlorn hope of getting Palestinian leaders to the negotiating table.

Indeed, less than a week after the Post’s most recent broadside against Netanyahu appeared, it was revealed that the Palestinian Authority—in full violation of the terms and spirit of the U.S.-brokered Oslo Accords—paid $159 million to terrorists as part of its infamous “pay for slay” program that financially rewards those who attack Jews. And in an interview on Jan. 23, Palestinian official Dr. Ahmed ‘Aql admitted that he has “dealings” with Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs) in Iraq, noting that the P.A. “knows that I meet with them, and it does not disapprove.” As The Washington Post itself has noted, these PMUs are responsible for attacks on U.S. contractors and gross human rights violations. By contrast, in November 2020, it was revealed that Israel—with U.S. cooperation—had taken out a top Al-Qaeda leader living in Iran.

Yet one shouldn’t expect that the Post editorial board will write a piece calling for the Biden administration to snub P.A. leader Mahmoud Abbas. That won’t happen.

The Washington Post prefers not to see Israel as an ally or equal. The U.S.-Israel alliance is not, in its view, a two-way relationship with inevitable ups and downs. Rather, the newspaper and staffers like Jackson Diehl view the Jewish state as being an ally that should take U.S. diktats—or else. Diehl and others of his ilk commonly assert that they support democracy, only to throw a fit when the democratically elected leader of Israel asserts his country’s prerogatives on existential issues like Iran and the P.A./PLO. That, more than anything, is the real reason behind the latest Washington Post temper tantrum.

GameStop Shares Double After Tumbling For Much Of February

0

(AP) — Wall Street’s mania over GameStop is on again, at least for one afternoon.

Shares in the troubled video game company more than doubled Wednesday to $91.71 apiece, the stock’s best day since Jan. 27, when it was going for $347.51 a share.

A rally in GameStop has been rare since it fell back to earth early this month. The stock, which soared 1,600% at one point in January, has been extremely volatile.. It’s down nearly 72% so far in February, though it’s still up nearly 387% this year.

Shares in AMC Entertainment, another stock hyped by online social media forums, jumped 18.1%. The movie theater chain’s stock is up nearly 60% this month and about 329% this year.

The sudden, sharp move higher in GameStop and AMC Entertainment left even some members of Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum, which helped cheer the stocks’ meteoric rise last month, scratching their heads.

“Can we honestly sound off on what we think is happening?” wrote one Redditor. “Is there any reason for this 150% spike??” asked another.

GameStop’s wild ride shocked Wall Street, forcing the market to gird for more volatility. It prompted Congress to hold a House hearing last week into what led to the frenzy and whether smaller investors need to be shielded from taking big risks.

Individual investors on Reddit and other social media forums encouraged each other to buy GameStop, AMC Entertainment and select other stocks in a bid to hurt hedge funds that were betting the stocks would lose value. The move, known as a “short squeeze,” can lead traders who were using options to bet against a stock to abandon their bets. To do so, they have to buy shares of the stock, which pushes the price even higher.

GameStop was an extreme example because some of its shares had been sold short multiple times.

Gust Kepler, CEO of stocks and options platform BlackBoxStocks, said that he became aware around 3:30 EST Wednesday of “aggressive buying” of call options on GameStop shares. A call option gives a trader the right to buy a stock at a certain price at a later date.

“I am not certain that there’s another short squeeze going on like the one before, however, there are probably some funds who stayed short assuming the dust would settle,” Kepler said.

Another possible reason for GameStop’s sharp move: The Grapevine, Texas, company announced Wednesday that its chief financial officer will be resigning on March 26.

“The CFO exited the company and there’s talk of the company finally transforming from a brick and mortar to deploying their product in a digital way, and this is why we believe the stock shot up at the end of the day today,” Kepler said.

Some of the traders who bid up GameStop’s shares last month cited optimism that new board member Ryan Cohen, the founder of online pet store Chewy, would help turn the struggling retailer’s fortunes around.

The company has been struggling to adapt to the rise of mobile gaming and digital downloads that have rendered its more than 5,000 stores obsolete, even more so during the pandemic.

Some market watchers speculated that GameStop’s surprise reanimation was a reaction to critical comments from Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s right-hand man.

Speaking at the annual meeting of Los Angeles Daily Journal Wednesday, the Berkshire Hathaway vice chairman pinned the GameStop stock frenzy on small investors that he said were gambling on the stock market.

“That’s the kind of thing that can happen when you get a whole lot of people who are using liquid stock markets to gamble the way they would in betting on race horses,” Munger said.

The remarks didn’t win Munger many admirers on WallStreetBets. One Redditor posted a chart in the forum showing the spike in GameStop’s shares, adding: “TAKE THAT CHARLIE MUNGER.”

Facebook Says It Will Pay $1B Over 3 Years To News Industry

(AP) — Facebook, following in Google’s footsteps, says it plans to invest $1 billion to “support the news industry” over the next three years.

The social networking giant, which has been tussling with Australia over a law that would make social platforms pay news organizations, said it has invested $600 million since 2018 in news.

Google said in October that it would pay publishers $1 billion over the next three years.

News companies want Google and Facebook to pay for the news that appears on their platforms. Governments in Europe and Australia are increasingly sympathetic to this point of view. The two tech companies suck up the majority of U.S. digital advertising dollars, which — among other problems — has hurt publishers.

Facebook said on Tuesday it would lift a ban on news links in Australian after the government agreed to tweak proposed legislation that would help publishers negotiate payments with Facebook and Google. Facebook was criticized for its ban, which also temporarily cut access to government pandemic, public health and emergency services on the social networking site.

Facebook said Tuesday that the changes allow it to choose which publishers it will support and indicated that it will now start striking such deals in Australia.

Google had already been signing content licensing deals with Australian media companies, and says that it has arrangements with more than 50 publishers in the country and more than 500 globally.

There may be more such regulation in other countries. Microsoft is working with European publishers to push big tech platforms to pay for news. European Union countries are working on adopting copyright rules that allow news companies and publishers to negotiate payments.

Chasidic Boy Dies in Horrific School Bus Accident

(VINnews) – An eight-year-old Chasidic boy on his way to school lost his life this morning after a heartbreaking accident in Williamsburg.

Sources told VIN News that Shimon Zev Fried was running to catch his bus just after 8:30 this morning when he was instead struck by the vehicle which pulled away, leaving him lying in the roadway. It appears that the driver of the bus did not see the boy as he ran towards the vehicle and was unaware that he had hit him.

Police said that the driver of an MTA B60 bus was driving on South 5th Street just east of Hooper Street when she noticed something in the roadway and realizing that it was a child, she pulled over to the side of the road. According to ABC News (https://7ny.tv/3bxIY7m), the bus arrived at the accident scene just two minutes after it happened, with the driver phoning dispatch which place the call to 911. The NYPD, Hatzolah and Chesed Shel Emes all responded to the accident and the boy, who had sustained traumatic injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement released by MTA Bus Company president Craig Cipriano described the incident as a tragedy.

“Our hearts go out to the child’s family as well as to our colleague driving the B60 bus that came upon the scene and first discovered the horrible aftermath,” said Cipriano. “We are fully cooperating with the NYPD investigation and providing all possible support to the bus operator as she recovers from trauma.”

The driver of the school bus was later located and is cooperating with police at the 90th Precinct. Sergeant Robert Denig of the NYPD’s Highway Patrol’s Collision Investigation Squad said that the difficulty of his team’s work was further exacerbated by the circumstances of this accident.

“It’s always heartbreaking,” said Sergeant Denig. “And yes, when it’s a child, it’s that much more heartbreaking. It’s devastating.”

USAF Reports that F-35 Stealth Fighters Have Major Flaws; Replacement of Cold War Fleet on the Horizon

Seems like a much needed upgrade to the United States Air Force fleet of aging F-16 planes is in the initial planning stages.

According to a recent announcement made by Air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Brown, a new multi-use fighter jet to replace the Cold War era stealth fighter F-16 fleet is a necessity. He stressed that the new jet would not feature the same high-price tag and technological prowess of the F-35, according to a report on the trtworld.com web site.

The result would be a high-low mix of expensive “fifth-generation” F-22s and F-35s and inexpensive “fifth-generation-minus” jets, explained Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Brown Jr, as was reported by Forbes.

This announcement came as a surprise to defense analysts, given that the F-35 was pegged as the modern fifth-generation aircraft that would replace the F-16, as was reported by trtworld.com. In 2040, the F-16s will reach their 60th birthday.

Trtworld.com reported that nearly twenty years ago, the USAF set out to develop a replacement to the F-16’s successor, but the program only continued to grow prohibitively expensive as more cutting edge technology was poured into it during the research and development phase. When it grew too expensive, other nations were brought in as partners to offset the runaway costs.

Forbes reported that the Air Force and lead contractor Lockheed Martin packed the jet with more and more new technology.

Running the F-35 for 66 years is expected to cost $1.182 trillion, on top of its already hefty development cost of $397.8 billion, as was reported by trtworld.com. The F-35 costs slightly less than $100 million per plane.

Speaking to Forbes, Dan Ward, a former Air Force program manager and the author of popular business books including The Simplicity Cycle said, “The F-35 is not a low-cost, lightweight fighter.”

The F-35 is a Ferrari, Brown told reporters last Wednesday. “You don’t drive your Ferrari to work every day, you only drive it on Sundays. This is our ‘high end’ fighter, we want to make sure we don’t use it all for the low-end fight.”

“I want to moderate how much we’re using those aircraft,” Brown said.

In spite of its advanced technology and cutting-edge capabilities, the latest stealth fighter suffers from structural flaws and slew of challenges, as was reported by trtworld.com.

The F-35’s engine problem is partly based in not being able to deliver them for maintenance as fast as needed, in addition to a problem with the heat coating on its rotor blades which shortens engine lifespan considerably, as was reported by trtworld.com

Defense News reported that Lockheed Martin is pitching the Defense Department on a performance-based logistics contract for the F-35 joint strike fighter that company officials say will help improve the availability of spare parts and accelerate repair times.

The new proposal, which would run from 2022 to 2026, is a scaled down version of the more expansive proposal Lockheed floated in 2019. As such, the Pentagon likely won’t be able to rake in the $1 billion of savings that the company projected with the original offer, said Ken Merchant, the company’s vice president for F-35 sustainment. Instead, Lockheed Martin worked to shrink the scope of the contract “to something that the customers were comfortable with,” he told reporters Tuesday.

“With the new, reduced scope, we have not completely run all the models yet. We’re still working through the performance work statement and contract structure with the customer. Until we have that done, we can’t get the cost savings piece of it laid out,” he said. “I don’t suspect it will be anywhere near what we had hoped for before. But we will see performance improvements along lines of what we had hoped for previously.” (Forbes, trtworld.com & Defense News)

Protesters to Gather at NBC Studios to Express Outrage Over Saturday Night Live’s Anti-Semitic “Joke”

Still justifiably roiled at the controversy swirling around a vehemently anti-Semitic “joke” that was uttered by Saturday Night Live cast member Michael Che during his “Weekend Update” skit, a prominent Brooklyn Jewish leader has now called on like-minded people to express their outrage at SNL at a demonstration scheduled for Saturday night.

In a new YouTube video, Dov Hikind, former Brooklyn Assemblyman and founder of the Americans Against Anti-Semitism activist group said that the protest he is organizing will be held outside of NBC headquarters on West 49th Street on Saturday at 9 pm.

“We are going to NBC to educate — not to crucify anybody — we are going there to say this is not funny,” Hikind said in the video that was disseminated on Tuesday. “Antisemitism is never funny. Period.”

The skit in question that has raised the ire of so very many centered around Covid vaccinations in Israel. According to a recent New York Post report, during his “Weekend Update” skit, cast member Michael Che, who plays a news correspondent quipped, “Israel is reporting that they’ve vaccinated half of their population. I’m going to guess it’s the Jewish half.”

According to the Jewish Virtual Library the vast majority of Israel’s population — 74 percent — is Jewish, as was reported by the NY Post.

The Post reported that vaccination rates of Israeli Arabs are much lower than Jews in the country, partially due to distrust of the government in the Arab community, according to a January article in The Christian Science Monitor.

As a scholar of contemporary anti-Semitism and a son of Holocaust survivors, Hikind posted, “Unsurprising coming from SNL as they have a long record of anti-Semitism.”

Beside himself, Hikind said that Sid Rosenberg, co-host of WABC’s “Bernie and Sid in the Morning” radio show, will lead the protest, according to the NY Post report.

Also weighing in on this issue was acclaimed radio talk show personality, longtime Jewish activist, and president of the Conference of Jewish Affairs, Rabbi Aryeh Spero. In a recently published article entitled, “Saturday Night Live Stoops to Anti-Semitism to Get a Cheap Laugh” Rabbi Spero wrote:

“The producers of Saturday Night Live decided they would sacrifice the truth and demonize the Jewish State for the sake of a cheap laugh or, worse, enable an age old blood libel accusing Jews of manufacturing and spreading plagues while being indifferent to others.  Surely Mr. Michaels knows of the heroic efforts Israel has made in creating vaccines, medicines, and state-of-the art medical equipment to alleviate not only the coronavirus but also every type of disease found across the globe.  The Saturday Night Live crew would do best to educate themselves on how Israel, matched only by the United States, has sent its transportable medical units immediately to every part of the globe facing a meteorological or medical catastrophe.”

He added that: “The Saturday Night Live crew would never be this callous, nor stereotype a Muslim or LTGBQ group.  They know that in today’s culture, such demonization would get them cancelled and removed from media outlets. The demands for perfection made by left-leaning media outlets are directed mostly against the United States and Israel.  Why are there never demands that Muslim countries and organizations step up to the plate and help others, as is continually demanded of Israel, the United States, Jews and Christians?”

Rabbi Spero who is also the author of the book “Push Back: The Battle to Save Our American Judeo-Christian Heritage” also said in his article:

Had Lorne Michaels, founder and producer of Saturday Night Live checked, he would have found that Israel has already vaccinated 70% of its Arab population over 60 years old, directly resulting in a delay for many of its Jewish citizens within Israel. In addition, had Mr. Michaels checked, he would have found that Israel offered the vaccine to Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Arab Authority, who refused the vaccine, placing his hatred of Israel above concern for his own Muslim constituents.”
