Saudi Arabia: Drone Attacks Halted Half Its Oil Production

0
i24news

Saudi Arabia’s energy minister said Saturday that drone attacks on two Aramco oil facilities by a Yemen Houthi militia group have cut the kingdom’s oil production in half.

By: Edward Yeranian

Amateur video of the early morning attack in Abqaiq, in eastern Saudi Arabia, showed several blazes raging. By afternoon, video showed huge plumes of smoke rising into the sky. Saudi officials said no workers were killed or injured in the attacks.

A military spokesman for Yemen’s Houthi militia, Col. Yahya Saree, claimed responsibility Saturday for the drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities and vowed to increase them if Saudi-coalition forces continued their strikes on targets inside Yemen. It was not clear, however, if the drones originated in Yemen.

Saree said 10 (Houthi) drones hit the two oil facilities run by Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil giant. He said the attacks are being dubbed “Operation Balance of Terror” and are a response to what he called the “ongoing crimes of blockade and aggression on Yemen” (since the Saudi-led coalition began battling the Houthis five years ago).

Saree claimed the attack was the “largest to date” and that it “required extensive intelligence preparations,” including information from sources inside Saudi Arabia.

Later Saturday, however, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the attacks on the Saudi oil plants, and ruled out involvement by Yemen’s Houthis.

“Tehran is behind nearly 100 attacks on Saudi Arabia while Rouhani and Zarif pretend to engage in diplomacy,” Pompeo said on social media, referring to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif.

“Amid all the calls for de-escalation, Iran has now launched an unprecedented attack on the world’s energy supply. There is no evidence the attacks came from Yemen,” he said in a tweet.

The State Department declined to provide any evidence to bolster Pompeo’s claim, Reuters reported.

The attack on the oil processing sites in Saudi Arabia happened around 4 a.m. local time.

Residents of Abqaiq posted video of what appeared to be Saudi anti-aircraft guns firing into the air at the drones, as the attacks took place. Some Arab news channels claimed that Saudi air force early warning planes were dispatched to the country’s northern border, amid fears the drones were coming from Iraq. VOA could not independently confirm the allegations.

U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia John Abizaid told Reuters news agency, “The U.S. strongly condemns today’s drone attacks against oil facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais. These attacks against critical infrastructure endanger civilians, are unacceptable, and sooner or later will result in innocent lives being lost.”

James Krane, a Middle East energy specialist at the Baker Institute at Rice University in Texas, told Reuters, “This is a pretty serious escalation of the proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia. With something like this, we might see the U.S. get dragged in. Iran is telling us, ‘You need to put us on the front burner.’

“They’re not going to be put out of the picture forever. With (former U.S. national security adviser John) Bolton out, who knows? It is hard to see that Bolton’s departure isn’t part of the calculus,” Krane added. “Iran is stepping up what they see is its defense and looking for us to make the next move, and we’ve just fired the hardest-line guy in the Cabinet.”

The attacks Saturday were the latest of many recent such assaults on the Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure, and they have been the most destructive.

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said in a statement by the state-run Saudi Press Agency Saturday that the damage at the facilities led to “the temporary suspension of production operations,” affecting an estimated 5.7 million barrels of crude supplies at the Abqaiq site and the Khurais oil field.

Saudi Aramco said in the statement some of the shortage would be offset with stockpiled supplies and added it would provide additional information in the next 48 hours.

The drone assaults also led to concerns about the global oil supply and what will likely be an increase in tensions in the region.

Hilal Khashan, who teaches political science at the American University of Beirut, told VOA that he suspects the drones may not have been launched from inside Yemen because the Houthis don’t have drones capable of flying as far as Saudi Arabia’s eastern province. Khashan does believe, however, that forces inside the kingdom helped guide the attacks.

“There is no doubt that in order for the Houthis to land the drone on the target they need coordinates and they need someone on the ground to guide them in determining the coordinates. It sounds plausible to me that they have support on the ground in the Eastern Province,” Khashan said.

There has been some speculation that alleged Houthi drone attacks on the Saudi Yanbu pipeline last May were launched from Iraq, which is much closer to the target than Yemen. That attack damaged two oil pumping stations along the largest Saudi cross-country oil pipeline.

Saturday’s attack comes as the Saudi oil giant Aramco prepares to publicly sell shares of the company, leading some analysts to speculate the attacks were meant to depress the value of the company when its shares go on the market.

Several analysts on Saudi-owned al-Arabiya TV accused Iran of perpetrating Saturday’s drone attacks from bases operated by its Revolutionary Guard and local Shiite proxies from inside Iraq. VOA could not confirm the claims. (VOA)

WH Confirms that Osama bin Laden’s Son was Killed in US Counterterrorism Operation

The White House said Saturday that the son of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden has been killed in a U.S. counterterrorism operation in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.

Edited by: JV Staff

“Hamza bin Laden, the high-ranking al Qaeda member and son of Osama bin Laden, was killed in a United States counter-terrorism operation in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region,” a White House statement said.

“The loss of Hamza bin Laden not only deprives al Qaeda of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group. Hamza bin Laden was responsible for planning and dealing with various terrorist groups.”

Hamza bin Laden had become a significant figure in al Qaeda and could have potentially become the terror group’s leader. The current leader of al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, took over after Osama bin Laden’s death.

The younger bin Laden was described by the White House as “the high-ranking al-Qaeda member” who was “responsible for planning and dealing with various terrorist groups.”

Some media organizations previously reported earlier this summer that Hamza bin Laden had been killed about two years ago, but it was not confirmed by the administration of President Donald Trump until Saturday.

Hamza bin Laden was believed to have been in his 30s.

His father declared war against the U.S. in 1996 and was the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States. U.S. Navy SEALs killed him in a raid on a house in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in 2011.

The US had offered a $1 million reward for assistance in locating Hamza bin Laden earlier this year as part of the State Department’s Rewards for Justice program. Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security Michael Evanoff said at the time that Hamza “has released audio and video messages on the Internet, calling on his followers to launch attacks against the United States and its Western allies, and he has threatened attacks against the United States in revenge for the May 2011 killing of his father by US military forces.”

Rumors had spread at the end of July that Hamza bin Laden was killed and the New York Times even reported that two US officials had confirmed his death. President Donald Trump had refused to comment on the report at the time.

Hamza, the 15th of Osama’s 56 children and reportedly about 30 years of age, began releasing recordings and videos calling for attacks against the US and its allies in 2015. “Be perfect in your choice of targets, so that you may damage your enemies more,” he stated. His last public statement, in which he threatened Saudi Arabia, was released in 2018.

The John Bolton PAC will contribute to each campaign for
a collective amount of $50,000

Edited by: JV Staff

Former Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, Ambassador John R. Bolton, announced on Friday the resumption of the John Bolton PAC and the John Bolton Super PAC. He also announced the John Bolton PAC’s endorsement of the following five federal candidates running in 2020: Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), and Rep. Lee Zeldin (NY-01). Additionally, the John Bolton PAC will contribute $10,000 to each candidate’s primary and general election campaigns for a total of $50,000. Ambassador Bolton has endorsed each of these candidates in previous election cycles.

“The John Bolton PAC and John Bolton Super PAC seek a strong, clear, and dependable U.S. national security policy, resting on constancy and resolve,” said Ambassador Bolton. “The experience that these incumbent members of Congress have provides them with a remarkable understanding and knowledge of the threats we face from international terrorism and rogue regimes such as Iran and North Korea.”

Since 2014, the John Bolton PAC has contributed $1,504,500 to 219 federal and state candidates. During this same time, the John Bolton Super PAC has spent $6,183,797 on independent expenditures in support of strong national security policies.

Bolton was allegedly fired on Tuesday by Trump, although Bolton has tweeted that he had resigned.

In reaction to Bolton’s departure from his post, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX),  a member of the Senate’s foreign relations committee, said in a statement, “I sincerely hope his leaving the White House does not mean that the deep-state forces at State and Treasury — who have been fighting tooth and nail to preserve the Obama Iran nuclear deal — have finally convinced the president to go soft on Iran.”

According to a report in Ha’Aretz, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif constantly referred to Bolton as one of the “three B’s” – three people who according to Zarif are pushing Trump towards war with Iran. They are Bolton, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Ha’Aretz also reported that within the Trump administration, Bolton was considered one of the closest people to Netanyahu and to Ron Dermer, the Israeli ambassador to the US who is based in Washington, DC.

Additionally, the paper reported that Bolton shared Netanyahu’s views regarding Iran, and was involved in the recent discussions between Israeli and American officials about some form of “gesture” to the prime minister from the administration ahead of the Israeli election next week.

Senator Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the foreign relations committee, told reporters Bolton’s firing is emblematic of Trump’s style.

“He wants people who basically are yes-men. I may not have agreed with Ambassador Bolton on a whole host of issues and his bellicose views, but the one thing about him is he obviously presented counterviews at times for his consideration. That’s not something the president wants,” said Menendez.

Bolton was chosen by Trump in March of 2018 to replace H.R. McMaster, a former Army lieutenant general, as national security adviser.

Trump’s first choice for the position, Michael Flynn, also a retired Army lieutenant general, lasted less than a month in the job before being fired. He was subsequently convicted of lying to the FBI about December 2016 conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States, and he is awaiting sentencing.

Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, was brought into this administration after a stint as a commentator on the Fox News Channel, which is generally supportive of President Trump.

Bolton, who previously had served in three previous Republican presidential administrations, also held roles in the Justice and State departments.

Ahead of Israeli Elections, Trump Offers Possible Mutual Defense Treaty

President Trump congratulated Benjamin Netanyahu over the weekend on becoming the longest serving prime minister in Israeli history. “Congratulations to Bibi@netanyahu on becoming the longest serving PM in the history of Israel. Under your leadership, Israel has become a technology powerhouse and a world class economy…,” Trump tweeted on Sunday, a day after Netanyahu reached the milestone by surpassing David Ben-Gurion’s total of 4,875 days in office. Speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday, President Trump said that he offered a possible mutual defense treaty between the two allied nations. This move that could bolster Netanyahu’s re-election bid just days before Israelis go to the polls, was was reported by Reuters.

Edited by: JV Staff

“I had a call today with Prime Minister Netanyahu to discuss the possibility of moving forward with a Mutual Defense Treaty, between the United States and Israel, that would further anchor the tremendous alliance between our two countries,” Trump said on Twitter.

Reuters reported that Trump added that he looked forward to continuing those discussions at the U.N. General Assembly session in New York; scheduled for later this month.

Netanyahu expressed his appreciation to Trump, saying in a tweet that Israel “has never had a greater friend in the White House,” and adding that he looked forward to meeting at the U.N. “to advance a historic Defense Treaty between the United States and Israel.”

Pundits have said that Netanyahu is fighting for his political life in Israel, and the timing of Trump’s tweet may have been a gesture of support and solidarity with Netanyahu, who Trump considers to be longtime friend and colleague.

According to Reuters, opinion polls predict a close race, five months after an inconclusive election in which Netanyahu won the election but was unable  to cobble together a coalition government.

Netanyahu’s Likud party is in a razor thin race with the Blue and White party led by former IDF chief Benny Gantz. Gantz has spent most of his time during the campaign attacking Netanyahu on looming corruption charges being brought against him. .

Reuters reported that in an interview with Israel’s TV Channel 12 later on Saturday, Netanyahu made a direct appeal to voters based on the treaty. “I’m going to get us a defense pact that will provide us with security for centuries, but for that I need your votes,” he said.

Trump previously bolstered Netanyahu’s candidacy when he recognized Israel’s claim of sovereignty over the Golan Heights ahead of the elections earlier this year, according to the Reuters report.

Some Israeli officials have promoted the idea of building on Netanyahu’s strong ties to the Trump administration by forging a new defense treaty with the United States, focused especially on guarantees of assistance in any conflict with Iran, as was reported by Reuters.

Trump provided no details, but a mutual defense treaty could obligate the United States to come to Israel’s defense if it is attacked.

Reuters reported that Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said earlier this month that a pact should apply to “defined issues — nuclear threats and the matter of long-range missiles aimed by Iran at Israel.”

“We have means of offense and defense, but this would spare us the need to earmark enormous resources on a permanent basis and for the long term in the face of such threats,” Katz told Israel’s Ynet TV.

Netanyahu’s chief rival Gantz assailed the idea as a “grave mistake,” arguing it would strip Israel of military autonomy.

“This is not what we want,” the centrist candidate told a conference in Jerusalem. “We have never asked anyone to get killed for us. We have never asked anyone to fight for us. And we have never asked anyone’s permission to defend the State of Israel.”

Guilty Verdict Handed Down in Mar-A-Lago Trespassing Case; Chinese Businesswoman Faces Up to 6 Years in Jail

On Wednesday, a federal jury handed down a conviction in the trespassing case of Yujing Zhang, a Chinese businesswoman who lied to Secret Service agents in order to gain access to President Trump’s Florida estate, known as Mar-A-Lago, near Palm Beach.

By: Terry Spencer

The 33-year-old Shanghai consultant faces up to six years in prison when District Judge Roy Altman sentences her Nov. 22, according to an Associated Press report.

Acting as her own attorney after dismissing the public defenders assigned to her case in June, Zhang displayed no reaction when the verdict was read aloud in court.  She then spoke calmly with federal marshals, discussing what would happen with her legal papers. She smiled at her standby public defenders and was led back to jail.

The AP reported that prosecutors and Zhang’s standby attorneys declined to comment. Jury forewoman Shelly Hoffman said only, “You heard our verdict.”

Troubles began for Zhang in February of this year when she paid $20,000 to “Charles,” a man she knew only online, to attend a Chinese-American friendship event at Mar-a-Lago on March 30. It included a promised photo with the president or a member of his family, according to evidence in submission. These kinds of meetings are commonplace occurrences at Mar-a-Lago. Trump has owned the exclusive club since 1995 when he purchased the property of a 1920s mansion that was built by Post cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post.

Zhang’s former public defenders believe “Charles” is Charles Lee, a Chinese national who ran the United Nations Chinese Friendship Association, as was reported by the AP.  It is not affiliated with the U.N. He was photographed at least twice with Cindy Yang, a Republican donor and former Florida massage parlor owner who organized Mar-a-Lago events.

By mid-March, texts the Secret Service found on Zhang’s cellphone showed Charles told Zhang the event had been canceled. For the same price she could attend an event with Bill and Hillary Clinton or one with investor Warren Buffett, although a photo with Buffett would cost $40,000 more, testimony showed. Photos with celebrities like the Trumps, the Clintons or Buffett are sometimes used by Chinese business owners for promotion.

Zhang demanded a refund, the text showed. Prosecutors said that showed she understood the event was off.

Still, Zhang flew to the United States on March 28. A limo driver testified that on March 29 he took to Mar-a-Lago a woman prosecutors said was Zhang. The woman told Willy Isidore she planned to visit the club, but he told her that was impossible unless she had an invitation.

The next day, a taxi dropped Zhang off at the Secret Service screening area across from Mar-a-Lago. The president and his family were at the club that weekend, although he was playing golf at his nearby course and Zhang was never near him, according to the AP report.

The AP reported that agent Krystle Kerr testified Zhang said she was there to visit the pool. Mar-a-Lago managers thought she might be the daughter of a member named Zhang and admitted her.

Receptionist Ariela Grumaz testified she immediately spotted Zhang as an outsider. Grumaz said she knows the 500 members and most of their guests and Zhang was taking photos in the lobby, which is prohibited. She also said Zhang was wearing a long, gray evening dress at 1 p.m., which seemed odd. Grumaz said she stopped Zhang as she tried to walk past her into another room. Zhang told her she was there for the U.N. event, but Grumaz knew no such event was scheduled.

Grumaz alerted the Secret Service. Agent Sam Ivanovich testified Zhang told him she was there for a Chinese-American event and showed him an invitation in Mandarin, which he doesn’t speak. He said a search showed Zhang was carrying four cellphones, a laptop and an external hard drive. She told agents she feared they would be stolen if she left them in her hotel room. However, when agents searched her room, they discovered in the open more electronics gear — including a device to detect hidden cameras — $8,000 in cash and numerous credit and debit cards. She faced no espionage charges, however. (AP)

Israel Denies Report it Planted Spy Devices Near White House

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is denying a report that Israel set up spying devices near the White House, saying it is a “complete fabrication.”

Edited by: JV Staff

The spokesman for the Israeli embassy in Washington, Elad Strohmayer, also denied the report by the Washington-based news site Politico, telling VOA, “Israel doesn’t conduct espionage operations in the United States, period.”

Later Thursday, President Trump appeared to agree with the Israelis. “I don’t believe that, no, I don’t believe the Israelis were spying on us. I really would find that hard to believe,” Trump told reporters at the White House after being asked about the report.

“My relationship with Israel has been great,” Trump said, listing some of his pro-Israel accomplishments. “Anything is possible,” he conceded, “but I don’t believe it.”

Politico reported Thursday that the U.S. government believes Israel, a close U.S. ally, was probably responsible for planting eavesdropping devices found near the White House and other sensitive locations in the nation’s capital.

The small surveillance devices, commonly known as StingRays, “were likely intended to spy on President Donald Trump,” Politico wrote. But the report added, “It’s not clear whether the Israeli efforts were successful.”

Several former senior U.S. national security officials told Politico that analysis of the devices by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other U.S. agencies linked them to Israeli agents. The report says the U.S. government, citing the officials, concluded within the last two years that Israel was likely behind the placement of the devices.

Politico described the anonymous sources as having “knowledge about the matter” and that the devices were discovered some time ago.

According to a report in the Times of Israel, a reporter from the LA Times named Noga Tarnopolsky said the story was “completely false. Absolutely false. I checked.” The reporter quoted a senior administration official as saying.

Two years ago, an unknown number of the devices was found near potentially sensitive locations in Washington during a Department of Homeland Security investigative project.

The U.S., however, has not taken action against Israel for allegedly planting the devices. The report suggested the U.S. has downplayed Israel’s alleged actions due to the very close relationship Trump has with Netanyahu.

The report was published just before Israel’s general election next week that has Netanyahu locked in a close race for reelection. It also came in a week during which Trump appeared to distance himself from Netanyahu’s unwavering stance on Iran by signaling a possible meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. (VOA)

Jeffrey Epstein Made Pregnant Victim of Abuse Recruit Underage Girls for Him

One of the women who has alleged that she was sexually abused by sex offender and pedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, has told the media that she had procured at least 70 underage girls for him to abuse as well.

Edited by: JV Staff

A new report indicates that Epstein became dismissive of this woman when she got pregnant.

Citing depositions, the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper identified the victim as LM. She allegedly claimed that Epstein (who allegedly took his own life while at the MCC prison in New York City on August 10th) exploited her and used her as a vehicle to abuse other girls. When she became pregnant she claims that she no longer had his attention and that he was no longer interested in her.

The New York Post reported that in order to persuade her to stay in his employ, Epstein allegedly bought all of the gifts on the victim’s baby shower registry and had them delivered to her house by one of his female drivers, according to the Mail.

Last week the Jewish Voice reported that in the wake of Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide, federal authorities “have refocused their investigation on the more than half-dozen employees, girlfriends and associates whom prosecutors say he relied on to feed his insatiable appetite for girls,” according to the New York Times.

The paper of record’s review of lawsuits, unsealed court records and depositions, and new interviews, offers “disturbing allegations about how this small cadre of women helped Mr. Epstein lure girls into his orbit and managed the logistics of his encounters with them,” it reported. “The urgency of the investigation into Mr. Epstein’s associates was underscored on Tuesday when about two dozen women offered searing accounts of how he had sexually abused them before a packed courtroom in Manhattan. The judge overseeing the case had invited the women to speak at a hearing to dismiss the indictment against Mr. Epstein in light of his death.”

As more details of the private life of Jeffrey Epstein become known, a more cogent picture forms of a man devoted to his physical pleasures. “Video obtained by Fox News, taken during a 2005 police raid of Jeffrey Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion, shows the convicted sex offender’s eccentric and explicit taste in art, which was displayed throughout the house,” Fox reported. “The art included paintings, sculptures, photographs, sketches and posters.”

Inside the home, Fox continued, “the video showed a wall covered in artsy nude photos of men and women, a painting of a nude woman lying on her back and a photo of a topless woman – who appeared to be Epstein’s ex-girlfriend and alleged madam, Ghislaine Maxwell – lying on a sandy beach. Another photo showed a naked young woman lying on a beach.”

Recent weeks have seen many of Epstein’s alleged victims come forth to tell their tales and vent their angry. As the Associated Press recently reported, “One by one, 16 women who say they were sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein poured out their anger… lashing out at him as a coward and a manipulator, after a judge gave them the day in court they were denied when he killed himself behind bars.”

Jennifer Araoz, who accused the financier of having raped her when she was 15, is quoted by the Associated Press as commenting, “The fact I will never have a chance to face my predator in court eats away at my soul. Even in death, Epstein is trying to hurt me. I had hoped to at last get an apology, but this evil man had no remorse or caring for what he did to anyone.”

Purdue Pharma to Pay Out Up to $12B in Tentative Settlement in Opioid Lawsuits

Purdue Pharma has reached a deal for up to $12 billion to settle the thousands of lawsuits it faced for the role its notorious painkiller OxyContin played in fueling the opioid epidemic, according to a New York Post report.

Edited by: JV Staff

Purdue reached the agreement Wednesday with 23 state governments and 2,000 cities and counties that were trying to hold the company accountable for what many saw as a case of putting greed before people’s lives, as was reported in the NY Post.

Under the settlement, Purdue will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and dissolve, while the Sackler family will relinquish control of the company.

The Sackler family, ranked by Forbes in 2016 as the 19th richest in America, will pay about $3 billion in cash over seven years as part of the settlement, which does not include any acknowledgment of wrongdoing, according to the NY Post report.

“While our country continues to recover from the carnage left by the Sacklers’ greed, this family is now attempting to evade responsibility and lowball the millions of victims of the opioid crisis,” New York Attorney General Letitia James told the Post.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro added, “This apparent settlement is a slap in the face to everyone who has had to bury a loved one due to this family’s destruction and greed.”

Last week the Jewish Voice reported that the Sackler family may be able to retain most of its vast financial treasure trove as part of a newly put forward Purdue settlement agreement.

The family, which earned riches and then opprobrium for marketing the painkiller OxyContin beginning in 1996 through its firm Purdue Pharma, is said to be hammering out a deal that would allow it to keep most of its money.

“Under a novel plan to relinquish control of their company, Purdue Pharma, and resurrect it as a trust whose main purpose would be to combat the opioid epidemic,” The Washington Post has reported, “the Sacklers could raise most, if not all, of their personal share of the $10 billion to $12 billion agreement by selling their international drug conglomerate, Mundipharma, according to the documents and those close to the talks.”

The forward-looking proposed settlement — built on the projected value of drugs not yet on the market — is expected to benefit both sides in the ongoing litigation. According to published reported, in excess of 2,000 municipalities and other parties are involved in various lawsuits.

“Purdue would produce millions of doses of badly needed anti-addiction medication and overdose antidotes for the public, free of charge; the company would also contribute hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and insurance policies that could be worth more; what’s left of the company, including its North Carolina production facility and other assets, would change hands,” the Washington Post added. “Much of the benefit to the public would be funded by the continued sales of the powerful narcotic OxyContin, the abuse of which is blamed for contributing to the prescription opioid crisis that has killed more than 200,000 people since 1999.”

According to preliminary details, the Sacklers and their company would owe between $10 billion and $12 billion. The company be required, as well, to make its oft-abused drug available to patients for free.

“The move to create a “public benefit corporation” to settle a civil action suit is a “novel approach”, according to John Coffee, a law professor and director of the Centre on Corporate Governance at Columbia Law School, who described the idea as a business run by trustees,” reported The Independent.

“The controlling Sackler family would also give up ownership of Purdue Pharma, based in Connecticut, which they have run since the 1950s, and pay $3 billion of their own money towards to the settlement,” noted The Independent, citing published reports in The New York Times. “The family has been blamed for putting profits above health and safety, thereby fueling the opioid crisis. In recent months, they’ve seen a distinct shift in public persona, including being ousted from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as a large donor in May.”

Israeli Baseball Team has Sights Set on 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Israel’s national baseball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Baseball Championship being held in Germany, an early Olympic qualifying tournament, as was reported by the JTA.

Edited by: JV Staff

Israel finished second in its pool with a record of 4-1, losing only on Wednesday to the current European champion, the Netherlands, following victories over the Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany and Great Britain, according to the JTA report.

Israel will meet the France on Friday in the quarterfinals, a round-robin competition. JTA reported that the top five teams will advance to the World Baseball Softball Confederation Olympic Qualifier Europe-Africa tournament in Parma, Italy, which starts on Sept. 18. The sixth team playing in that tournament will be South Africa, which won the 2019 African Baseball Championship.

The winner of the qualifier tournament will get a bid to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The runner-up will have another opportunity to qualify for Tokyo at a future qualifying event, according to the JTA report.

The Israeli team’s roster includes Jewish-American college players and some pros. They had the country’s best showing in the last World Baseball Classic in 2017, surprising many by making the main tournament, where it finished sixth, according to the JTA report.

A report on Thursday that appeared on the From the Grapevine web site indicated that at the 2017 World Baseball Classic, the Israeli team stunned the international baseball community with four straight wins, bringing a sense of history to the tournament. The Israeli team beat Korea in extra innings, shocked Chinese Taipei, defeated Cuba and played the Netherlands twice before falling to Japan in their final game. ESPN dubbed the underdog Israeli team as “essentially the Mighty Ducks, Hickory High and the Jamaican bobsled team all rolled into one.” That winning season is now the subject of a new documentary called “Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel.”

While the World Baseball Classic only requires that players be eligible for citizenship of the country they represent, for Olympic qualifying tournaments and for the actual Olympics players must be citizens of the country they represent, according to the JTA report. The majority of the national team players is Jewish Americans who received citizenship in order to play or Israelis who live in the United States. Among the former pros on the squad are Danny Valencia, 34, and Jeremy Wolf, 25.

Dozens of CUNY Profs in Nat’l Database of Sex Offenders

0

By Clark Savage, Jr.

Problems with unwanted touching are cropping up on college campuses, reportedly from an unlikely source: the professors.

“Nearly three dozen educators at public and private New York City colleges have landed in a national rogue’s gallery of allegedly pervy professors,” reported the New York Post. “The academics accused of sexual misconduct range from instructors at Ivy League Columbia University to teachers and even a dean at taxpayer-funded City University of New York.
Michigan State University researcher Julie Libarkin has compiled a database of grabby educators, now numbering about a thousand. “As a woman, as someone in a male-dominated field, I know that sexual misconduct is quite common,” Libarkin said in an interview with the Post. “I decided just to see how common sexual misconduct was.”

Among the accusations: inappropriately touching a student during a ride home, groping and kissing a doctoral student and sexually harassing a male graduate student.

Libarkin, according to according to capeandislands.org, “ has taken on the challenge of creating a database of harassers. She’s a professor at Michigan State University and she heads the Geocognition Research Laboratory. She’s compiled a list of some 700 cases of sexual misconduct in academia.

“I think one of the biggest problems with sexual misconduct is that there’s no way to know if anyone experienced that before you,” Libarkin told Living Lab Radio. “There’s there’s really no way to find out this information. I want people to be able to look at these names.”

“I’m also surprised at how institutions… were unable to act to protect students or junior faculty,” she told the web site. “There are multiple cases of people who murdered the people that they were harassing.”

Indeed, hot and bothered professors appear to be a national problem. This summer, Johns Hopkins University’s Board of Trustees “fired an anthropology professor after an investigation determined he violated the school’s sexual misconduct policy, the university said in an email to staff and students,” according to The Baltimore Sun. The professor’s “tenure was revoked and his faculty appointment terminated, according to an email obtained Monday by The Baltimore Sun. Student activists have been calling for him to be fired after multiple people told university officials they witnessed an incident between him and a visiting graduate student in a Baltimore bar last year.”

Also in July, a professor at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia was let go “after offering a student better grades if they entered into a sexual relationship with him, according to a report from The Chronicle Herald. “An unnamed student said the instructor offered a female student better grades if she brought him moose and lobster meat, which the student did. The professor then demanded the student have sex with him in exchange for better grades. The student immediately reported the incident and told The Chronicle Herald the incident led to the professor’s termination. Cape Breton had not acknowledged the incident when asked by the Herald,” reported insidehighered.com.

“We were invited to Buckingham Palace and needed attire three days before the big event and guess who we turned to,” remarked Donald Trump Jr. as he spoke about the auteur who has catered to the Trump family for decades.  Zang Toi who has been dressing Ivana since 1995 with Ivanka walking six of his shows has been inextricably linked to the Trumps for decades.  Both Marla Maples and Don Jr. were in the audience with Don accompanied by his girlfriend longtime Toi lover Kimberly Guilfoyle.  Guilfoyle was wearing a blue Toi dress and has been a Toi loyalist for years.  Celebrating his 30th anniversary with a gaggle of his best friends in tow was no surprise as Toi is nearly as famous for his exquisite designs as he is for his delightful demeanor.  As socialites Audrey Gruss, Nicole Salmasi and Lucia Hwong Gordon gathered to pay tribute to this phenom there were also luminaries such as Patti LaBelle, Kelly Bensimon, and Bill Hemmer anxiously anticipating what he had in store.

Toi did not disappoint, regaling the crowd with his signature touches of flowing capes, diamond brooches, floral detailing, and exquisite designs ratcheted up a few notches for his anniversary.  The 8 PM show, which started forty minutes late, began with the National Anthem and was soon followed by the most competently executed show of Zang’s I have witnessed.  The models were perfection with their hair styled in a high chignon reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot with some Audrey Hepburn and Twiggy thrown in.  After sitting through a lengthy fashion week the most noteworthy trait of a Toi show is the attention he pays to each and every detail ranging from the harmonious classical music, to the perfect fit of each dress that glides down the runway.  Unlike other shows where earplugs are a necessary staple and vulgar designs are ubiquitous Zang’s collections transport the audience to a different time and era.

The Malaysian 58-year-old Toi, has a remarkable history, arriving in the United States at the age of 18 and opening his own atelier in 1989 after attending The Parsons School of Design.  He is paradigmatic of the opportunity abounding in capitalistic America for those who choose to work hard- exemplified by the fact that 30 years later the President’s son was sitting in his audience smiling from ear-to-ear at the designs parading by.  Toi said the collection was a tribute to his Malaysian heritage with his unique interpretation of textiles such as Batik, Sarong, and Songket Malayu.  The pastels were inspired by Her Royal Highness, Tengku Anis’s love for all shades of pastel.  It was only fitting that Zang who came from the humblest of backgrounds in Asia would pay tribute to his roots with a lavish show that spared little expense.

The 30-piece collection began with tunics and trains and lots of black-and-white ensembles.  The looks were sexier than usual with plunging necklines, daring miniskirts, and micro dresses.  Intricate embroidery, another Toi trademark, graced collars, jackets and sleeves with a bold prominence.  The black and white embroidered jacket coupled with shorts and a black and white cape was sublime-classy, edgy and utilitarian without trying too hard.  When the pastels of light blue, pink, lilac and yellow appeared on organza dresses accompanied by crystal crown brooches the Audrey Hepburn effect was in full force.  The sheer pink floral gown with attached shorts was a unique take on evening wear that was demurely provocative.

My favorite of the night was the pastel metallic lilac gown accompanied by a rose encrusted miniskirt with matching sleeves-the sexy vibe accompanied by girlish playfulness is what fashion is all about.  Concluding with a dramatic lilac column gown with a train and a blue caftan high neck gazar dress brought me back down to earth-that is until Carol Alt sashayed down the runway in a princess wedding gown with silver hand-beading.  This was Toi telling the world that while we embrace the excitement of the new we must also pay homage to classic beauty that has paved the way for the magic of the modern era.

What Does Bolton’s Exit Mean for U.S. Policy on Israel & Iran?

Given the major departures of pro-Israel figures like the now former national security advisor and the upcoming resignation of U.S. special envoy Jason Greenblatt, questions remain as to the direction of the Trump administration

By: Jackson Richman

With John Bolton ousted as national security advisor on Tuesday, questions remain regarding the Trump administration’s posture on both the U.S.-Israel relationship and the Iranian threat.

“President Trump and John Bolton share a strategic vision of leveraging American economic and military power, especially maximum sanctions pressure and targeted power projection to achieve international security objectives,” Washington-based geopolitical strategist John Sitilides told JNS.

“John Bolton possesses superb situational awareness skills and a first-rate analytical intellect on national-security priorities.”

However, he continued, Bolton’s “policy options and recommendations were frequently misaligned with President Trump’s agenda to end protracted wars, diminish the risk of launching new wars and emphasize diplomatic incentives, as well as deterrents in persuading U.S. adversaries such as China, Iran, North Korea and the Taliban to change their hostile behaviors and policies.”

Bolton’s exit comes at a time of when the administration is preparing to release its long-awaited Middle East peace plan to respond to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as possible negotiations with Iran.

Trump said on Monday that he was open to meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, which wasn’t the first time he has invited talks with Tehran.

“It could happen,” he told reporters outside the White House. “No problem with meeting. Iran should straighten out because frankly, they’re in a very bad position,” he added.

Ilan Berman, senior vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council, said that Trump’s neo-isolationist views and purported desire to strike diplomatic deals with long-time foes such as North Korea and Iran are at odds with the maximalist positions of Bolton, a veteran of the George W. Bush administration.

“Bolton’s ouster as national security advisor shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. After all, it has been clear for some time that his long-held attitudes on issues like North Korea and Iran are at odds with the president’s preferred approach to these same matters,” Berman told JNS.

“This is particularly true in the case of Iran—the Trump administration has steadily gravitated toward the idea of re-engaging Tehran in negotiations [though ostensibly more harshly than was done under Obama],” he continued. “Bolton has long been an advocate of isolating the Iranian regime, and it’s reasonable to assume that he was not a proponent of renewed talks with Tehran. His departure, in turn, eliminates at least one institutional roadblock to such dialogue on the U.S. side.”

Despite Trump repeatedly saying of late that he would meet with the Iranians, Rouhani has rejected his overtures, insisting that he would only meet with the United States if it lifts sanctions, which the Trump administration reimposed after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, in addition to enacting new financial penalties against the regime.

‘Not the time to take foot off the gas’

Bolton’s exit also comes a week after special U.S. envoy to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt announced his upcoming resignation. Greenblatt had been heavily involved in formulating the administration’s peace plan, along with the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. Bolton is a well-known figure in pro-Israel circles and seemed to enjoy a strong relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who shared his hardline views on Iran. Netanyahu hosted Bolton, as well as his Russian national security counterpart, at a major trilateral summit in Jerusalem last June, and Bolton toured the region personally with Netanyahu.

Given the two major departures of pro-Israel figures, questions remain as to the direction of the administration.

As Bolton’s departure pertains to the U.S.-Israel relationship, Security Studies Group senior fellow Matt Brodsky told JNS that “there are obviously many aspects” to the alliance and “how it will be impacted by Bolton’s exit depends on the specific area of policy we’re discussing.”

Brodsky mentioned that he reached out to the White House team dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian peace process following Bolton’s forced resignation. An administration official told him, “There is no change in United States policy at this time. We will release our ‘Vision for Peace’ after the Israeli election and work to determine the best path forward to bring long-sought security, opportunity and stability to the region.”

The peace team, explained Brodsky, has been more insulated from the daily machinations of the wider National Security Council, which the national security advisor leads.

Regarding Iran, Brodsky said that “it is too early to gauge the impact. I thought Bolton was a terrific choice for national security advisor because he saw the world for how it was—not how he wished it would be. He helped lead the effort to apply more pressure on Iran, and frankly, his policies were working. He recognized that now was not the time for the administration to take its foot off of the gas. To the extent anyone takes his place and removes pressure from Iran, it will be bad for Israel.”

“Israel’s security establishment has been concerned about what talks would like look between President Trump and Iranian President Rouhani,” he added. “Would it turn into something resembling the relationship between the president and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un? Would it be based on substance or optics? If Israel had to act on its own, I’d imagine they would feel better having a clear-eyed hawk like Bolton at the president’s side.”

Moreover, he said, “it would be a very problematic to have an isolationist serve in the role of national security advisor. There are often times when America’s adversaries don’t care about what the U.S. wants; they care about what they want, and they’ll wage war whether we want it or not. We need someone clear-eyed about the threats facing the U.S., and there are many.”

Brodsky emphasized that “President Trump’s love for Israel appears to be a kishka issue that he feels deeply inside. So I don’t imagine his love for Israel and its people will diminish with Bolton’s departure. But how that love is demonstrated on a strategic and tactical, day-to-day basis may shift with new ideas from a new national security advisor.”

Middle East Forum president Daniel Pipes echoed Brodsky: “I doubt that Bolton’s leaving has major implications for the U.S.-Israel relationship, which seems to be primarily under the influence of Jared Kushner. A more isolationist national security advisor seems likely, someone more in keeping with Trump’s views.”

“A national security advisor whose advice is followed would lead to a less assertive policy vis-à-vis both Iran and Israel,” added Pipes. “We’d become a bit more like the Europeans or [former U.S. President Barack] Obama: the default policy.”

Trump, in his announcement on Twitter of Bolton’s exit, said that he would soon name what will be his fourth national security advisor as early as next week. (JNS.org)

As the world commemorated 18 years since the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States, the Keren Kayemet LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF) and the US Embassy in Israel held their annual memorial ceremony to honor those who perished. The 9/11 Living Memorial Monument is the only one outside of the United States to include all the names of the 9/11 victims, and reflects the shared values between Israel, the United States and the entire free world for peace and unity, and against terror.

Attending the ceremony were US Ambassador to Israel, H.E. David Friedman; Secretary of Veterans Affairs Mr. Robert Wilkie; KKL-JNF Vice Chairman, Mr. Yair Lootsteen; JNF-USA Chief Israel Officer, Mr. Eric Michaelson, as well as other distinguished guests.

Various delegations arrived from the United States and Israel for the ceremony, including United Airlines pilots, firefighters and police officers, and representatives from JNF-USA and Nefesh B’Nefesh, along with Israeli families who lost loved ones in the attack, ambassadors and other diplomats.

The 9/11 Living Memorial was established in 2009 by KKL-JNF and JNF-USA. The impressive thirty-foot-high bronze sculpture was created by the Israeli artist Eliezer Weishoff and KKL-JNFs’ landscape architect Yechiel Cohen. It portrays the American flag folded into the shape of a memorial flame; a metal shard from the ruins of the Twin Towers is incorporated into the base of the monument, which overlooks a magnificent vista of the Jerusalem Hills and the Arazim Valley.

Last evening, a ceremony of the lighting of the “Tribute in Light”, for the first time in Israel, in commemoration of the victims of 9\11 took place – opening the 9\11 remembrance day. The ceremony included the lighting of 2 beams of light, shining up to 300 meters tall over Jerusalem, similar to the “Ground Zero” tribute in New York.

US Ambassador to Israel, H.E. David Friedman: “We stood together in solidarity on 9/11 and we knew that terrorism could not defeat us. Standing here today at this beautiful memorial, we all recall that terrible day in 2001 and we honor the memory of the victims.  In their honor, let us also reaffirm our sense of solidarity and commitment to our most cherished values.  That will be the lasting legacy of 9/11.”

KKL-JNF Vice Chairman, Mr. Yair Lootsteen: “This monument is a symbol of flourishing, of life, of continuity and of the strong bond that KKL-JNF and Israel as a whole hold with the US. Here we choose, each year, to take an oath to those who perished – to do all we can to build an even better tomorrow for future generations.”

Mrs. Yael Levontin, JNF-USA Affiliates Director: “We established this memorial site as a message to the world, that we are here, in solidarity and unity.  The “Tribute in Light,” lit last night, escalated skywards towards the heavens, is an invitation for all to join our mission to be an agent for change in the world.”

Bibi Reveals New Iran Nuke Site; Seeks More Pressure on Tehran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unveiled on Monday evidence of a previously undisclosed Iranian nuclear weapons site, according to a World Israel News report.

In a televised presentation at Israel’s Foreign Ministry, Netanyahu showed definitive satellite images and map coordinates of the nuclear site in the central Iranian region of Abadeh. Netanyahu said the information came from nuclear archives that Israeli agents obtained from Iran’s capital, Tehran, in early 2018. He had previously revealed the existence of those archives, according to a VOA report.

“Today, we reveal that yet another secret nuclear site was exposed in the archives that we brought from Tehran. In this site, Iran conducted experiments to develop nuclear weapons. This is the site near Abadeh, south of Isfahan,” Netanyahu explained during the press conference.

In a tweeted response to Netanyahu’s presentation, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to the newly-identified location as an “ALLEGED demolished site.” Zarif also tried to undermine the Israeli leader’s credibility, posting a video clip in which Netanyahu, in a previous role as an opposition leader, told a U.S. congressional hearing in the early 2000s that removing then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from power would have “positive reverberations” in the region. VOA reported in an aerial image of the Abadeh site dated in late June of this year, several small buildings were seen clustered in a mountainous region. Netanyahu then showed another image of the site with a late July date, with all of the buildings demolished. He said Iran cleared the site after realizing that Israel had learned of its existence.

Netanyahu said Iran used the site to conduct “experiments to develop nuclear weapons,” without elaborating. Iran long has insisted its nuclear ambitions are peaceful.

“When Iran realized that we uncovered the site, here’s what they did: They destroyed the site. They just wiped it out. They wiped out the site. … They destroyed the evidence or at least tried to destroy the evidence. … It’s incredible. Every time we reveal, they try to cover up their tracks,” Netanyahu declared. He explained that the facility was discovered based on records that Israel seized from an Iranian nuclear warehouse early last year in a raid during which Mossad agents spirited out of Iran a “half-ton” of nuclear documents.

The prime minister added: “Even before that, Iran knew that we were on to them, so they cleared the site. They cleared it of these capacities, they cleared them, and then they actually covered up the site. This is a literal cover-up. They put gravel on it to try and hide their traces. But they didn’t. The IAEA found traces of uranium that Iran hid in these sites. That’s a direct violation of the NPT, the nonproliferation treaty.”

Speaking directly to the rogue Iranian terror regime, Netanyahu stated, “This is what I have to say to the tyrants of Iran: Israel knows what you’re doing, Israel knows when you’re doing it, and Israel knows where you’re doing it,” he stated, warning that “we’ll continue to expose your lies.”

The Israeli prime minister then addressed his remarks to the rest of the world.

“I call on the international community to wake up, to realize that Iran is systematically violating the deal,” he said. “The only way to stop Iran’s march to the bomb and its aggression in the region is pressure, pressure and more pressure.”

Netanyahu also confirmed that uranium traces were found at a Turquzabad facility he identified last year, referring to a report the previous evening that the IAEA inspected the site in April and found radioactive material, including uranium, which is a key ingredient for developing nuclear bombs, according to the World Israel News report.

The WIN report indicated that this information was communicated by Reuters, which based its report on the word of two diplomats familiar with the IAEA’s work.

“A year and a half ago, we exposed Iran’s secret nuclear archive which revealed that Iran was developing five nuclear warheads as early as 2003. Last year, we exposed Iran’s secret nuclear warehouse in Turquzabad which Iran used for storing materials and equipment for its secret nuclear program,” Netanyahu noted, as was reported by WIN.

VOA reported that in a tweeted response to Netanyahu’s presentation, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to the newly-identified location as an “ALLEGED demolished site.”

Israeli opposition leader Benny Gantz, who heads the center-left Blue and White party leveled criticism at the timing of Netanyahu’s presentation. Gantz, who served as the 20th Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from 2011 to 2015, claimed that Netanyahu was furthering a political agenda by making this presentation at this juncture in time. “Netanyahu’s use of sensitive security information for propaganda purposes indicates poor judgment. In his last days as prime minister, Netanyahu only cares about himself,” said Gantz. Photo Credit: Shutterstock

Zarif also tried to undermine the Israeli leader’s credibility, posting a video clip in which Netanyahu, in a previous role as an opposition leader, told a U.S. congressional hearing in the early 2000s that removing then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from power would have “positive reverberations” in the region, as was reported by VOA. A U.S.-led coalition ousted Saddam in a 2003 invasion of Iraq, triggering a years-long conflict in that nation.

Having been sanctioned in July by the US, Zarif has used Twitter frequently to mock and criticize the U.S. and Israel for their perceived punitive actions and statements toward Iran, according to the VOA report.

Andrea Stricker, a nonproliferation policy analyst at Washington’s Institute for Science and International Security, told the VOA Persian News Service that her organization was examining the material presented by Netanyahu. “There’s nothing so far to indicate that it’s not credible, based on other information that Israel has released,” she said.

Netanyahu gave his latest presentation eight days before his ruling Likud party faces voters in a parliamentary election in which he is seeking to extend his historic tenure as Israel’s intrepid leader. VOA reported that Israel called the election after a previous vote in April ended inconclusively, with Netanyahu unable to secure a Knesset majority for a coalition government with smaller right wing and religious allies.

On the political front, Israeli opposition leader Benny Gantz, who heads the center-left Blue and White party leveled criticism at the timing of Netanyahu’s presentation.

According to the VOA report, Gantz, writing in Hebrew, concurred with Netanyahu that a nuclear-armed Iran is a danger to regional stability and said there is no coalition and opposition when it comes to Israel battling that threat.

The Times of Israel quoted a diplomatic source who refuted the criticism that Netanyahu was making a revelation about Iran to seek a political boost one week before the election, according to the VOA report.

TOI quoted the diplomatic source as saying Israeli officials recommended that Netanyahu reveal the information immediately in response to a news conference by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s acting director general, Cornel Feruta, earlier Monday, as was reported by VOA.

Speaking to reporters in Vienna after returning from a visit to Iran a day earlier, Feruta said, “Time is of the essence” for Iran to answer IAEA questions about the “completeness of … declarations” regarding its nuclear-related commitments under a 2015 deal with world powers, as was reported by VOA.

Trump pulled the United States out of the deal, which offered Tehran international sanctions relief in return for constraints on its nuclear activities, last year, and unilaterally reimposed U.S. sanctions. He said the deal was not tough enough on Iran.

The VOA report indicated that Feruta did not provide details of the IAEA’s unanswered questions to Iran. But in a Sunday report, the Reuters news agency cited two unnamed diplomats as saying IAEA samples taken at another alleged Iranian nuclear site revealed by Netanyahu last year showed traces of uranium that Iran has yet to explain.

Speaking to the U.N. General Assembly in September 2018, Netanyahu called the Tehran site a secret atomic warehouse, alleging Iran had used it to house radioactive material that it later spread throughout the city, as was reported by the VOA.

Iranian officials have dismissed that revelation as false.

Stricker said Israel’s latest revelation of an alleged secret Iranian nuclear site represents a failure of the IAEA’s effort to determine the extent to which Iran progressed in developing its nuclear weapons program in the past. “After closing its investigation into possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program in 2015, new developments keep coming out, and the IAEA is forced to address them, or else it will have no credibility,” she said.

In another development Monday, the IAEA said its inspectors confirmed that Iran is preparing to use more advanced centrifuges capable of refining uranium, a key component of nuclear weapons. In a statement, the IAEA said the equipment that Iran has “prepared for testing” includes several types of centrifuges prohibited under the 2015 nuclear deal. It said none of them had been tested by the end of its latest inspection on Sunday.

VOA reported that Iranian officials had previewed the move related to advanced centrifuges last week as their latest scaling back of compliance with the 2015 accord. They have said the scaling back is meant to pressure the deal’s remaining signatories, particularly European Union powers, to compensate Tehran for the economic damage inflicted by intensifying U.S. sanctions.

Despite openly taking steps to violate limitations specified in the agreement, Iran has said it will continue to work with the IAEA to allow inspections of its nuclear facilities.

Con Ed Under Fire as Politicos Grill President & Consider Public Takeover

Lawmakers questioned Con Edison President Timothy Cawley at a joint hearing held by the State Senate and State Assembly in lower Manhattan that focused on Con Edison’s preparedness and their much criticized response to the blackouts that impacted thousands of New Yorkers on several hot, humid summer days, while one New York representative hinted at a public takeover of Con Ed, The Brooklyn Eagle reported.

Con Edison President Timothy Cawley opened the hearing with a defense of the company’s performance this summer and its overall reliability.

Crain’s reported that Sen. Michael Gianaris was one a few state lawmakers to insinuate that Con Edison’s drive to profits could be at odds with its ability to provide reliable electricity.

Gianaris asked the executive about the “virtues” of an investor-owned utility, compared to a publicly owned system.

“Certainly, you folks can look at that,” Cawley responded. “I would say that we are heavily regulated, and, in many cases, private-owned enterprises focus on efficiency and ensuring the job gets done well and in a way that pleases the customers.”

State Sen. Kevin Parker, chairperson of the Energy Committee, said he went into the hearing with a lot of questions on his mind. “I appreciate Con Ed being open and making themselves available. For me, this hearing was about three things: One, what happened, two, why did it happen and three, what will we do going forward?” said Parker, a Democrat representing Flatbush, East Flatbush and Ditmas Park, Brooklyn Eagle reported.

Brooklyn was a hot topic at this hearing. Last July Con Edison deliberately shut off power to 33,000 Brooklyn customers in Brooklyn as a way to cope with increased power use during one of the hottest days of the summer.

Residents from Flatbush to Bath Beach were left in the dark for more than five hours. The lengthy blackout also hit places like Bergen Beach, Mill Basin, Canarsie, Flatlands and Georgetown, The Eagle reported.

The idea of a publicly run power grid was first floated by Mayor de Blasio in July. “Con Ed is a private company that is heavily regulated, but they are still a private company and they’re not accountable to the public in the way a public agency would be,” de Blasio said at a July 22 press conference.

“Con Edison is among the most expensive utilities for customers in the nation,” Sen. Michael Gianaris stated at the hearing

“I wonder if that is related to the fact that you are a private entity, you are making profits, paying dividends and at the same time you are a monopoly. I question whether we have turned the economic incentives upside down”, the Queens representative said according to Crain’s.

Sen. Brad Hoylman, who represents part of the West Side that lost power, called the outages a “national embarrassment” that cost Con Edison the confidence of public officials., Crain’s reported.

A blackout in the heart of Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen in July made front page headlines nationwide as Broadway Shows were interrupted in their peak business on a Saturday night, ruining the evening of thousands of Broadway tourists.

Con Ed has invested more than $1 billion yearly in improving its system, and the company delivers power to its Westchester County and city territories eight-times more reliably than national averages, Con Ed president Cawley pointed out in defense of the company.

New 9/11 Memorial Recognizes Long Term Health Toll on Survivors

A collection of granite slabs installed at Ground Zero this past spring commemorate the continuing toll taken by the 9/11 attacks – the lives lost by firefighters, police and others who have either died or fallen ill due to exposure to toxins unleashed in the wreckage.

“The unusual addition reflects a memorial that is evolving as the aftermath of 9/11 does. And for families like Joanna Reisman’s, the new 9/11 Memorial Glade gives their loved ones a place in the landscape of remembrance at ground zero,” reported Crain’s New York Business. “Subtle and sculptural, the memorial glade features six stone pieces inlaid with steel salvaged trade center steel. They jut from the ground along a tree-lined pathway. Unlike the plaza’s massive waterfall pools memorializing people killed on 9/11—those whose names are read at anniversary ceremonies—the boulders are not inscribed with the names of those they honor. There is no finite list of them, at least not yet.”

“In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, tens of thousands of men and women from every state in the nation and around the world came to this site to do what they could to help,” says the web site 911memorial.org. “Facing a mountainous landscape of mangled and jagged steel at Ground Zero, and despite fires that burned for 100 days, they worked night and day over the course of nine months. They came to rescue, all too soon turning to the grim work of recovering those who had been killed and removing nearly two million tons of debris. Through sheer determination, they paved the way for rebuilding. Their sacrifice would be met with suffering.

“On the day of the attacks and throughout the recovery, hundreds of thousands—responders and survivors, workers and residents—were exposed to hazards and toxins in the air at and around the World Trade Center site, resulting in chronic illnesses and the deaths of thousands,” the web site continues. “Responders and workers at all three attack sites, including the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, have been affected. For the injured, sick, and dying, and for their families and friends, 9/11 has remained an all-too-present reality. The 9/11 Memorial Glade is dedicated in their honor.”

The Glade’s inscription encapsulates its purpose:

This Memorial Glade is dedicated

To those whose actions in our time of need

Led to their injury, sickness, and death

Responders and recovery workers

Survivors and community members

Suffering long after September 11, 2001

From exposure to hazards and toxins

That hung heavy in the air

Here and beyond this site known as Ground Zero

And at the Pentagon

And near Shanksville, Pennsylvania

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.

Here we honor the tens of thousands

From across America and around the world

Who came to help and to heal

Whose selflessness and resolve

Perseverance and courage

Renewed the spirit of a grieving city

Gave hope to the nation

And inspired the world.
