Lenox Hill named one of America’s best maternity hospitals for second consecutive year
NEW YORK, NY – Lenox Hill Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, has received “America’s Best Maternity Hospital” award from Newsweek for the second year in a row. The premiere global magazine’s 2023 accolade was awarded to only 384 hospitals across the country for demonstrating superior maternal care. Lenox Hill was among only 159 hospitals to be given the magazine’s highest honor of five ribbons. Other Northwell hospitals included in the rankings were Huntington Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical center.
“This honor highlights the fact Lenox Hill Hospital has an exceptional team of doctors, nurses, midwives, physician assistants and administrators that deliver the highest quality of care to mothers and their infants,” said Frank Chervenak, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Lenox Hill Hospital. “I am grateful and proud of their award-winning dedication.”
Quality maternal care can provide positive long-term health benefits to mothers and their newborns. The comprehensive list, compiled by Newsweek in partnership with Statista, aims to provide expecting parents with a comprehensive resource that helps them make informed health care decisions. The award is based on a robust analysis of recommendations by health care professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about maternity processes, results from patient surveys and hospital quality metrics relating to maternal care.
Ten thousand medical professionals were surveyed and asked to recommend notable maternity hospitals and rank eligible institutions on perinatal care, operative obstetrics, patient education, accommodation and service, and overall nurse and midwife staffing. The evaluation also included publicly available data from hospital patient surveys where patients reacted to topics associated with maternal care like cleanliness, care transition, communication, and staff responsiveness. Lastly, Joint Commission and Medicare and Medicaid data points including cesarean births, complications, elective deliveries, and infection prevention were considered.
Lenox Hill Hospital has gained a reputation for delivering world-class maternal and neonatal care. According to a U.S. News and World Report analysis on maternity care, the hospital rarely schedules deliveries earlier than recommended, avoids unnecessary C-sections, and has a below average incidence of newborn complications. The consumer review publication also ranked the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology department 18th in the nation. Additionally, for two consecutive years, Lenox Hill Hospital was named among the 50 Best hospitals in the U.S., according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients.
