Fighting for a Cure: One Mother’s Journey to Honor Her Son’s Memory and Help Others Affected by Neuroblastoma

By: Noy Assraf Azran

One year ago, Einat’s life was forever changed when her son, Shir, passed away from neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.

As Einat sat by Shir’s bedside, watching him fight for his life against neuroblastoma, she knew she had to do something to try and change the fate of children diagnosed with this rare form of childhood cancer. Despite undergoing multiple treatments in both Philadelphia and New York City, and even a long-shot cure, Shir’s little body was unable to overcome cancer’s rapid spread. Shir tragically passed away just three days after returning home to Israel with his family.

Neuroblastoma is cancer that develops in parts of the peripheral nervous system and primarily affects infants and young children up to the age of five. Although it is relatively rare, accounting for only around 8% of childhood cancers, it is responsible for a disproportionate 12% of cancer-related deaths in children. The causes and risk factors for neuroblastoma are often unknown.

In the wake of his death, Einat, along with her family, founded the Israeli nonprofit organization, Shir for Life, to raise awareness and funds for neuroblastoma research and treatment.

Through Shir for Life, Einat is determined to help other families facing the same heart-wrenching journey that she and her family experienced. “When my son was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, I felt like I was handed a death sentence,” Einat says. “I remember feeling so helpless and alone, not knowing where to turn or what to do. I don’t want any other parent to feel that way.”

To achieve their goal of finding a cure for neuroblastoma and improving treatment options, Shir for Life is funding groundbreaking research across the globe and working to enhance neuroblastoma treatment in Israel. “We are committed to finding a cure for neuroblastoma and giving hope to families facing this devastating disease,” Einat says. “We believe that by raising awareness and supporting research, we can change the course of life for children diagnosed with neuroblastoma.”

As Einat marks one year without her son, she remains determined to find a cure for neuroblastoma and honor Shir’s memory through the work of her organization. “I miss my son every day,” Einat said. “But I know that by fighting for a cure, I can make a difference for other families and honor Shir’s legacy.”

“I know firsthand the emotional toll that neuroblastoma takes on families,” she says. “I want to be there for others, to offer a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on, and to let them know that they are not alone in this fight.”

Shir for Life has already made an impact in the cancer research community, but Einat knows there is still a long road ahead. “We’ve come a long way in the past year, but there is still so much work to be done,” she says. “We won’t give up until we find a cure for neuroblastoma and give hope to families affected by this disease.”

“I will always remember my son’s smile and positive attitude throughout his journey with neuroblastoma,” Einat said. “I hope that through Shir for Life, we can bring hope and help to others facing this brutal disease.”
