ATM at Art Basel Miami Beach Showed Top Bank Balances of Users on “Leaderboard”

While thousands of people from across the globe convening at Art Basel Miami Beach last weekend, it was reported that a rather odd occurrence took place.

Art Basel Miami Beach has been around since 2002 and hosts a week full of art, luxurious parties and music festivals, while works of art sell for millions of dollars.

Apparently,  an ATM machine that was available to guests and was created by the Brooklyn art collective MSCHF snapping photos of guests at Art Basel Miami Beach and ranking their bank account balance on its “leaderboard” for all in attendance to see, according to a report in the New York Post.  A private transaction turns into a public spectacle the paper reported.

One man with a beard who was wearing a pink t-shirt was on top of the leaderboard with a $2.9 million account balance for all to see.

Speaking to CNN, Daniel Greenberg, co-founder of MSCHF said,  “‘ATM Leaderboard’ is an extremely literal distillation of wealth-flaunting impulses,” according to the Post report.

Greenberg explained to CNN that the concept for the ATM was designed for Art Basel Miami Beach because it is “a dense concentration of people renting Lamborghinis and wearing Rolexes.”

“Because of the camera, the ATM keeps a continuous record of each person who uses it and also each location that it is installed, so we hope that it will have an opportunity to move through more spaces,” Greenberg told CNN, as was reported by the Post.

As to where the ATM will make its next appearance is not known at this time, however Greenberg is seeking to make it available to whomever would like to purchase it or borrow it, the Post reported.

It is currently unknown where the ATM may pop up next, but Greenberg said it would be available to whoever would like to buy or borrow that daring cash machine.

The unique ATM is a joint effort between MSCHF and Perrotin Gallery, which represents Maurizio Cattelan, the artist who went viral in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach for taping a banana to a wall, the Post reported.

The Post also reported that MSCHF was founded in 2016. It is famously known for collaborating with Lil Nas X to sell the controversial ‘Satan shoe,’ which was said to be made with a single drop of human blood.

As the ATM moves to different locations, the top scores will remain on the leaderboard. This means that the leaderboard could see even larger bank balances in the future, the Post has reported.

Not everyone, however, is comfortable putting their bank debit card in this nifty machine as they would much rather keep their account balances private while they were attending Art Basel.

“Am I too broke or is it crazy that people are using that ATM at Art Basel? I don’t want anyone that’s not me looking at my accounts,” one Twitter user tweeted, according to the Post report.

“Trust you and me. There will be a story in a few month that says… ‘Art Basel ATM used as scam to get bank information,’” another tweeted.
