Voters who self-identify as “very liberal” are the most likely group to believe that American Jews have too much power, according to a poll conducted by the Jewish Institute for Liberal Values.

Progressive and very liberal voters were more likely than other political groups to view Jewish Americans as having unfair privileges or too much power, the poll found. Those groups were also more likely to report having friendships and family relationships damaged by politics.

“This poll confirms some of the worst fears of the Jewish community – that a dogmatic commitment to critical theory and a social justice lens can contribute significantly to antisemitism,” JILV CEO, David Bernstein said in a statement shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation. “While the majority of Americans support freedom of speech, oppose hyper-partisanship, and support traditional liberal values, the far left continues to view politics as a zero-sum game – dividing the world into ‘oppressors’ and ‘oppressed,’ and willing to expel those they disagree with from their social circle – and the results aren’t good for Jews.”

One fifth of very liberal voters, along with 17% of progressives, believed that American Jews have too much power, according to the poll. Another 78% of progressives and 81% of very liberal voters believe American Jews have “unfair advantages.”

These groups were also more likely to have lost a friend or stopped talking to a relative over political differences than others: 67% of Progressives and 54% of Very Liberals reported this experience, compared to 36% of very conservative respondents and 26% of somewhat conservative respondents, the poll found.

The poll comes after reports that nine student groups at the University of California Berkeley created “Jewish free zones” by banning pro-Israel speakers.

The survey polled 1,600 likely voters July 30 – Aug. 3 with a 2.5% margin of error.
