NYC Therapist Collapses and Dies Running Brooklyn Half Marathon

The Brooklyn half marathon on Saturday had a truly sad finish.

A 32-year-old runner in the marathon collapsed and died after crossing the finish line.  As reported by the NY Post, David Reichman, a behavioral therapist and Master’s graduate from New York University, fell in the sweltering heat on the boardwalk after the finish line at Ocean Parkway in Brighton Beach.  He was found unconscious, lying on the pavement, just before 9 a.m., and was pronounced dead at 9:44 a.m. at Coney Island Hospital, NYPD Det. Arlene Muniz told CNN.

As per the Post, Reichman founded ‘Field Trip Health’, a mental health and psychotherapy company in Kips Bay, as per his LinkedIn profile. His company, started in October 2020, was working on “redefining mental health and well-being through ground-breaking work in psychedelics and psychedelic-enhanced psychotherapy,” the LinkedIn page says.  Before that, Reichman had worked for two years as a substance use specialist for NYC Health + Hospitals and he earned a master’s degree from the NYU Silver School of Social Work, as per his profile.  He had reportedly moved to Manhattan just months ago, having formerly resided in an apartment in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Per the Post, there were also 15 other runners who had to be hospitalized after the 13.1 mile race on Saturday, due to the intense heat, which hit 70 degrees and 83 percent humidity, despite the early morning hours. The marathon boasted 22,000 runners, who made their way from the Brooklyn Museum, across the hills of Prospect Park and finally to the boardwalk on Coney Island.  The event, which is sponsored by New York Road Runners and the NYPD, had not taken place since 2019 due to the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time there has been a casualty following this event.  In 2014, a 31-year-old runner had similarly collapsed and died after crossing the finish line.  The New York City Medical Examiner will determine Reichman’s cause of death.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a participant following the 2022 RBC Brooklyn Half,” the NYRR New York Road Runners said in a statement said in a statement on Saturday.  It added that it had “medical staff placed from start to finish throughout the race course, who are ready to respond immediately to the medical needs of all runners, spectators, volunteers and staff.”

“The health and safety of our runners, volunteers, partners, and staff remain the top priority for NYRR,” the group said. “In coordination and consultation with the city agency partners and weather experts, NYRR was closely monitoring weather conditions leading up to and during the race.”
