Linda Evangelista has been hiding her body since her nightmarish cosmetic procedure. Now, the 56-year-old supermodel is done hiding.   Opening up in a recent interview with People Magazine, she spoke about the procedure which she says left her “brutally disfigured.”

“Do you see the angle of my arms? I can’t put them next to my body,” the model said in the interview, which included recent body shots. “I loved being up on the catwalk. Now I dread running into someone I know,” she said.  As per Page Six, from August 2015 to February 2016 she had seven sessions of CoolSculpting — a “fat-freezing” procedure.  It went all wrong though, she alleges.  Evangelista says her fat cells “increased, not decreased,” causing the areas she wanted to shrink to get larger.  “I tried to fix it myself, thinking I was doing something wrong,” she admitted. “I got to where I wasn’t eating at all. I thought I was losing my mind.”

Evangelista finally found out what was happening four months after her last session.  She was diagnosed with paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)–a rare side effect in which fatty tissues expands instead of contracting in response to CoolSculpting.  “He told me no amount of dieting, and no amount of exercise was ever going to fix it,” she added.

She is now opening up and sharing because she says hiding out was too painful. “I can’t live like this anymore, in hiding and shame. I just couldn’t live in this pain any longer.”  During the interview, several times, she pointed out bulges in her chin, thighs and chest area.  She continued, “PAH has not only destroyed my livelihood, it has sent me into a cycle of deep depression, profound sadness, and the lowest depths of self-loathing. In the process, I have become a recluse.”  She said she has now decided to share about her journey in an effort to help other women with similar experiences.

Evangelista says she wasn’t made aware of the possible side effect before the procedure and didn’t know what PAH was.  In September 2021, she filed a lawsuit against CoolSculpting’s parent company, Zeltiq Aesthetics Inc, demanding $50 million in damages, claiming that it was a “risk” they did not disclose and saying that because of it she hasn’t been able to get modeling jobs, as per the Post. “Today I took a big step towards righting a wrong that I have suffered and have kept to myself for over five years. … I have been left, as the media has described, ‘unrecognizable,’” she wrote on Instagram when she filed the suit.
