By Marvin A Azrak In America, we have freedom of speech, and Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter has decided to exercise it.

The 29-year-old has recently been speaking out against the Chinese government on human rights issues.

NBA made me do this,” Kanter said. “Because whenever one of the NBA teams or the commissioner comes out to speak, they say we are encouraging players to talk about whatever they want to talk about.” However, this shouldn’t behoove people into thinking that Enes is too politically immersed to get out of his way. “ People think I do politics; I don’t do politics. I do human rights.”

Kanter has urged other worldwide brands located in the US, such as Nike, to back his case, and join the cause of restoring justice to the Tibetans and Uyghur Muslims.

When it comes to China, Nike remains silent,” Kanter said in his message. “You do not address police brutality in China. You do not speak about discrimination against the LGBTQ community. You do not say a word about the oppression of minorities in China.” “You are scared to speak up,” Kanter said. “Who makes your shoes in China? Do you even know? There are so many forced labor factories in China. For instance, Uyghur forced labor.”

However, when being notified of this self-started rebellion, China responded to the 11 year NBA veteran by pulling the Celtics game off their streaming site, with Kanter’s shot towards Chinese President Xi Jinping a “brutal dictator.” The Chinese government has sent Uyghurs, along with Kazakhs, Tajiks, and other Muslim groups, to concentration camps for anything that does not align with the Chinese Communist Party’s agenda,” Kanter said in a separate video Friday. “It is so disappointing that the governments and leaders of Muslim-majority countries are staying silent while my Muslim brothers and sisters are getting killed, raped, and tortured,” Kanter said. As of Wednesday, Kanter has been wearing customized shoes to extend his voice to the court.

This isn’t the first time Enes Kanter Freedom had spoken out against a dictatorship, doing so in 2017 when he was with the New York Knicks, calling Turkish President Erdogan a dictator and seeing his father detained due to those comments. This resulted in Kanter missing the London game in 2019 when the Knicks battled the Wizards because he was on the “Wanted” list in Turkey, and the USA was the only place where he could be protected.

Instead of supporting Kanter, other players have spoken against him, with Metta Sandiford-Artest calling these statements misguided.

“I feel like he’s reaching a little bit because you can’t fault certain people for doing what they do. For example, you make it to the league, making a ton of money. Let’s say you’re Michael Jordan, and you’re not trying to mess your bread up because we don’t get these opportunities much. He’s looking at this from a different lens, a lens that is non-relatable.”

“Some people are built differently. And I think he’s looking at it from a lense of, ‘we’re here now in America, I’m doing something right.’ But we from the trenches. I’m from New York, where the police planted drugs on us. We’re from the trenches, man, and we’re trying to make it. He doesn’t get that part. I understand he’s looking at it from a lens of, ‘we’re gonna fight for black people,’ but he doesn’t understand what comes with that.”

But In contrast, Freedom isn’t from around here and didn’t grow up in a black community out in Turkey, so he doesn’t see a problem with the guys who sign his checks. It wouldn’t surprise most if Kanter doesn’t get picked up In free agency after this season, especially since the center has seen his stats take a dip from last season, now only averaging 12.7 minutes a game compared to 24 in Portland and only producing 4.6 points per game compared to 11.2 for the Trailblazers in 2021.
