One heck of a lucky person is now reeling in more dough than they probably ever dreamed of. On Tuesday night, a Mega Millions lottery ticket bought in a Manhattan pizza parlor made someone out there $432 million richer than they were the day before.
The sole winner of the lottery, which would yield them $315 million in cash as a lump sum, was purchased in the Diamond District of Manhattan; at Pronto Pizza on West 48th Street. Mega Millions said that after taxes, the prize money would work out to be $192 million.
Pronto Pizza also receives a substantial cut from the prize winnings as they are allocated a $10,000 commission for the selling the winning lotto jackpot ticket.
According to a Fox News article, the one and only unnamed winner correctly chose all six numbers which were 36, 41, 45, 51, 56 and the Mega Ball 13.
The only other winner was someone who had purchased a lotto ticket in Connecticut. They successfully chose all five white numbers but did not get the Mega Ball number. They won $1 million for their efforts. Not a bad pay day.
A jackpot of this kind had not been won since June 8th, when a winning ticket was sold in Illinois, according to Mega Millions. Now that a winner has been declared, the next drawing which is scheduled for Friday will revert back to $20 million, as was reported by Fox News.
Speaking to the New York Post, Pronto Pizza owner David Khirala, 55, said that the winning ticket was bought Tuesday night, just before all six numbers were drawn.
“I don’t know who it is,” Khirala told the Post, noting he “had a lot of people buying tickets yesterday.”
“I hope they are one of my regular customers. They deserve it to win,” he said, saying it was his “first major win” at the store, as was reported by the Post.
“I’m happy for this person. With the pandemic and everything, probably they need it,” he said, hoping it “came at the right time for this person.”
“Who knows if they have credit cards bills, kids to go to school……you never know,” he said, as was reported by the Post.
It is at least the third time the store has had million-dollar prizewinners — with a previous $3 million ticket sold by the same staffer as Tuesday’s Mega Millions one, Khirala told the Post.
In February, a couple in Oneida County won $96 million in the Mega Millions jackpot, so this made it the second big win of the year for the Empire State, as was reported by Fox News.
In January of this year, a group of players in Michigan won $1.05 billion, which marks the second biggest Mega Millions jackpot in history.
In January of 2016 a Staten Island woman, Nancy Viola, won $169 million which makes her the most recent Mega Millions winner from the five boroughs of New York City. The ticket was purchased for her by her husband, Vito, a sergeant in the New York City police department, as was reported by Fox News. After taxes, Viola and family received a $65 million lump sum payment.
In December of 2018, David Johnson, a truck driver from Brooklyn scored big on a Powerball ticket that he bought at a gas station near his East New York home, according to the Fox News report. He won $298.3 million and after taxes took home a lump sum of $114 million.
Alas, the rest of us can only dream.
