Andrew Heaney went seven innings of one-run ball for his first “Yankee moment” since they acquired him at the trade deadline, and the Yankees welcomed back some old faces in Anthony Rizzo, and Aroldis Chapman, as the Bombers completed a critical three game-sweep of the Boston Red Sox 5-2 in the Bronx.

Andrew Heaney took the mound having given up 15 runs in his first 15 innings, and the streak continued early on in the contest, as Xander Bogarts took one the opposite way for a solo shot to give Boston an early 1-0 lead. But against  Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta, the Yankees would strike back. A leadoff single to begin the second inning by Giancarlo Stanton was followed by a Rougned Odor walk, and a Gary Sánchez single that loaded the bases with nobody out. Earlier in the season, the Yankees would’ve found a way to not score, or barely even manage a run; however, this isn’t that same team we’ve seen for much of the year. Brett Gardner brought a run-in with a sac fly, unlikely hero Andrew Velasquez lined an RBI single into right, and Anthony Rizzo announced his return from the COVID-IL with a two-run single, extending the Yankees lead to 4-1 after two innings of play.

In the eighth, the Bronx native struck again with Andrew Velasquez roping another RBI single for his fourth RBI in the last two days which is more than he’s ever had in his career before coming to “Live out his dream”, and play for the Yankees.

Leading 5-1, New York turned to their now healthy closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth, but a 456-foot blast by Hunter Renfroe and a walk to Xander Bogarts had the bullpen stirring once again. Up next was Rafael Devers who lined a hotshot to first that was brilliantly knocked down by Anthony Rizzo for the putout bringing the Yankees on the verge of the series sweep. A JD Martinez single brought the  tying run-up in Kevin Plawecki against Lucas Lutege. With the count full, Kevin hit a grounder that slipped past the second baseman Odor but did not get past shortstop Andrew Velasquez, who slung it over to first base on a play that was topped off by a beautiful Anthony Rizzo “pick”, capping off the 5-2 win & the Yankees sweep of their hated rivals. After the sellout crowd let out a collective roar, the players went back to the clubhouse in a jubilant mood, before giving the 27-year-old “Kid from the Bronx” the championship belt who then said “I’m living a dream right now” playing for the team he grew up as a die-hard fan of.
