In 1989, Phil Robinson directed a now classic film on baseball, fatherhood and hero worship known as  “Field of Dreams” starring the legendary Kevin Costner. A film that has inspired millions over the last three decades, “Field of Dreams” became an academy award nominee for “Best Picture of the Year” when it was made. Costner stars as Ray Kinsella, a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) and the Chicago Black Sox; Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, and Burt Lancaster (in his final film role) also star in this film.

In addition to being nominated for Best Picture of the Year, it was also nominated for Best Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay. In 2017, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

On Thursday night, the New York Yankees played the Chicago White Sox in a cornfield located near the Field of Dreams movie set in Dyersville, Iowa . Before the first pitch, Kevin Costner made a special appearance and delivered a heartwarming speech to the 8000 fans in attendance.

In the bottom of the first inning, White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu made history by crushing the first MLB home-run in the “Field of Dreams.” This gave them a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. In the top of the third inning, Aaron Judge, the Yankee right field starter, drills an opposite field three run home run to right field, flipping the lead to 3-1 Yankees. In the top of the 9th inning with two outs, most fans thought this game was over with Chicago leading 7-4, but Aaron Judge literally “stepped up to the plate” and ripped a two run home run, making that his second homer of the night. The score was now close with a one run 7-6 lead by the White Sox. Joey Gallo walks after a good at bat, and Giancarlo Stanton hits a two run home run in which the Yankees regained the lead, making the game 8-7. In the bottom of the 9th inning, Tim Anderson hits a magical walk off two.run homer to win the game

Tim Anderson hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning into the cornfield to end the Field of Dreams game in cinematic fashion, as the Chicago White Sox outslugged the New York Yankees 9-8 in the first Major League Baseball game in Iowa.

Anderson, who had an earlier RBI double, danced his way around the bases after the walkoff, according to an AP report. That sent the crowd of 7,832 back through the corn and to their cars after a light and fireworks show at the made-from-scratch stadium next to the filming site.

Brett Gardner also homered for the Yankees. Zack Britton (0-1) took the loss.
