Francisco J. Esteva, MD, PhD, has been appointed chief of breast medical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital and director of breast medical oncology for Northwell Health’s Western Region, which includes Manhattan, Staten Island and Westchester County. Through his appointment, he joins the Breast Cancer Center of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, one of the largest oncology programs in the New York metro area.

In his new role, Dr. Esteva, an internationally renowned medical oncologist and a leader in breast cancer research and treatment, will focus on all aspects of breast cancer care. He will work to advance the patient-centered approach and drive innovative, high-impact research initiatives. Dr. Esteva will also spearhead the development of breast medical oncology services throughout the Western Region. He will continue to maintain an active medical practice focusing on compassionate, personalized, evidence-based, multidisciplinary care.

Dr. Esteva comes to Lenox Hill from NYU Langone Health, where he served as director of breast medical oncology and associate director of clinical investigation at the Perlmutter Cancer Center, as well as professor of medicine at the NYU School of Medicine. Previously, he was director of Breast Cancer Translational Research Laboratory and professor of breast medical oncology and molecular & cellular oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. During his tenure there, he secured a patent for diagnostic and therapeutic methods involving breast cancer and the tumor suppressor gene PTEN.

Throughout his 25-year career Dr. Esteva has made significant strides in the field of breast medical oncology. He has served as lead or co-lead investigator in more than 120 clinical trials evaluating new therapies for breast cancer patients within various stages and molecular subtypes of the disease. He has received nearly $25 million in prestigious research grants from federal agencies and private foundations. Much of his research has focused on determining why HER2-positve breast cancer is sometimes resistant to targeted therapies and how to overcome this resistance.

Dr. Esteva’s work has led to the development of novel treatment approaches for individuals with advanced HER2 positive breast cancer, resulting in improved patient outcomes. He has made seminal contributions to the development of a variety of medications that treat metastatic breast cancer, and his biomarker research has aided in the creation of a treatment option that permits reduced use of chemotherapy in patients with early-stage breast cancer. His main interest lies in finding new ways to predict the prognosis for breast cancer patients.

He has authored or co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and textbook chapters. Dr. Esteva helped develop the HER2 management guidelines published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and co-edited Advanced Therapy of Breast Disease, one of the leading textbooks in the field. He is on the editorial boards of the medical journals Clinical Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Research and Treatment and regularly reviews articles in other major scientific publications.

As a highly sought-after expert, Dr. Esteva has been invited to lecture and present at various prominent national and international forums, including at the annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), as well as at the European Breast Cancer Conference. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). In 2019, Dr. Esteva was awarded the Susan G. Komen Greater NYC’s “Physician of Impact Award.”

Dr. Esteva earned both his medical degree and PhD from the University of Zaragoza in his native Spain. After medical school, he served as an army physician in the Spanish army for one year before pursuing a research fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He went on to complete a medical internship and residency in internal medicine at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ, and a medical oncology fellowship at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. He is board certified in medical oncology.
