As the Democratic primary in New York City begins in less than 24 hours, candidates for mayor and other offices have been pounding the pavement across the five boroughs, urging people to cast their votes early in this hotly contested race for City Hall.

On Monday afternoon, mayoral front runner Eric Adams held his final press conference prior to Tuesday’s primary. He expressed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to his dedicated campaign staff and especially focused on heaping praise on the Uniformed Firefighters Officers Association, the city’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers. Adams also spoke of the valiant work of all frontline workers in the city’s health system and law enforcement system and spoke of the incredible courage and steadfast dedication of all first responders during the Covid-19 pandemic and during the 9/11 attacks almost 20 years ago.

In terms of leading New York City’s recovery in the aftermath of the devastating Covid virus that claimed the lives of over 33,000 New York City residents, Adams said; “Our campaign has been about mobilizing to save our city. While others fled, we led. We are going to continue to stay focused on this important moment before all of us.”

To the EMS workers, Adams took the opportunity to congratulate them for bringing all of their unions together and said, “We know what you are going through with the issue of pay equity and the issue of you being subjected to constant assaults. I know you think no one cares but I care and I am going to make sure that you get what you deserve.”

The intrepid firefighters also received words of commendation from Adams. “Every day we lose brave men and women in the city’s firefighters association, not only during Covid but throughout 9/11.  These brave people are truly representative of the blue collar spirit of this great city and we all owe them a great debt of thanks, “ Adams said.

Adams also mentioned his association with the Grand Council of Guardians.    The Grand Council of Guardians Inc. is an umbrella organization that consists of African Americans in the field of Law Enforcement, Uniform and Civilians throughout New York State.

The Grand Council of Guardians Inc. was formed in 1974 as an umbrella organization for local Law Enforcement chapters throughout New York State and to render effective service to the Community, to eliminate injustice, and to actively promote accelerated entry of African Americans into law enforcement. The organization also maintains the high standards of integrity, honor and courtesy of its members; fosters a spirit of brotherhood, benevolence, temperance and patriotism amongst them; and inculcates within them a high sense of loyalty to one another and to their duties and their government.

In the hours before Tuesday’s primary Adams exhorted New Yorkers to “stay focused. Don’t become distracted as we complete this final chapter of turning this city around. This is a blue collar city, with blue collar workers and blue collar thinkers. I know that you feel that this city has betrayed you and it has betrayed all of us since I was a little boy. This is why we want to move from betrayal to becoming. This is why I am running for the mayor of New York City.”
