On Monday, a prominent Jewish Day school in Long Island had its website hacked with anti-Semitic slurs and images.

As reported by Fox News, North Shore Hebrew Academy’s High School website was maliciously filled with Swastikas, clips of Nazi SS guards, a picture of Adolf Hitler, and disturbing changes to the text and images throughout different pages of the site. One page heading was altered to read, “North Shore Hebrew Death Camp”, the About Us page read, “The K-ke Race”. The hackers also replaced the school logo with a Nazi Swastika on the homepage and played a Nazi song.

In addition, personal information of students and teachers, including addresses and credit card information, were leaked in the cyber breach which lasted several hours beginning around 4 p.m.

By late Monday afternoon, the Modern Orthodox Jewish High School located in Great Neck, Long Island, had taken down the site and put up a page saying the site was “under construction”, so as to avoid further hacking. The school was also closed as a precaution on Tuesday. The school’s Headmaster Daniel Vitow told The Post that “We are aware of the situation and are actively working with law enforcement.”

The attack took place during the Jewish holiday of lights entitled Hanukkah. “We are horrified that hackers have targeted a Jewish school and exposed children to horrific Nazi imagery and messages,” said Liora Rez, the director of StopAntisemitism.org. “Many of these teens are descendants of Holocaust survivors and generational trauma is often triggered when events like these occur.”

Nassau County Police are investigating the attack and trying to put together how the student portal was infiltrated by hackers. As of Tuesday night, The FBI officially joined the investigation, Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said. “Last night the Nassau County Police Department commenced an investigation into disturbing and malicious communications that involve online attacks against our Jewish community,” Ryder said Tuesday. “These attacks will never be tolerated and I have assigned extra resources due to these anti-Semitic remarks and threats. We continue the investigation collaboratively with the FBI at this time.”

As per Newsday, in response to the attack, State Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach) requested that the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services allow the use funds obtained through the ‘Securing Communities Against Crimes Grants’ Program to increase cybersecurity for institutions.
