A true tragedy struck in Flatbush on Tuesday night, when 69-year-old Bella Wolman, a’h, was fatally hit by a car in the intersection on East 12th Street and Avenue M. Mrs. Wolman was a local resident of the Midwood area. Hatzolah ambulance members brought her to Maimonides Hospital in Boro Park in the aftermath of the horrific accident. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries and her funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs. Wolman, a’h, is the wife of R’ Yosef and mother of R’ Sholom, R’ Zevi and Mrs. Esti Elbaum (wife of R’ Yosef) and Mrs. Shifri Gottheil (wife of R’ Avrohom), as was reported by Yeshiva World News.

Police arrested the 65-year old driver who had made am illegal U-turn and went through a red light on this very busy two-way commercial street.

The driver, Gittie Klein, was behind the wheel of her 2020 Mercedes S-450 at around 5:30 pm on Avenue M in Midwood when she drove through the intersection. According to a report on Streetsblog.org, Mrs. Wolman was crossing from south to north in a legal fashion.

Police charged Mrs. Klein with making an illegal u-turn and going through a red light. She was also charged with failing to both yield and to exercise due care.

The complicated intersection has an angled road, according to the Streetsblog.org report. It said, “as a result, the DOT has created a cross-hatched zone to better delineate the separate roadways. But drivers frequently ignore the paint markings, as Klein allegedly did on Tuesday. The area is treacherous for pedestrians, given the congestion of vehicles in that area of Midwood, one block from the massive Edward R. Murrow High School.”

The NY Post reported that hours later in Manhattan, a 40-year-old motorcyclist was fatally struck by a Honda SUV, driven by a 25-year-old woman, on the southbound FDR Drive near East 36th Street around 11 p.m., cops said.

Streetsblog.org reported that last year, there were 83 crashes on just the nine blocks of Avenue M between Coney Island Avenue and Ocean Avenue, injuring three cyclists, 14 pedestrians and 18 drivers.
