When our parents, grandparents, or even we ourselves, gratefully arrived on these blessed shores, we assumed a few responsibilities. We were to become citizens and follow the rules and regulations laid out by our Constitution and local communities in order to maintain the democracy that attracted us to come here.  Among those guidelines were for us to become citizens and to vote in elections. And hidden away among our responsibilities was to check in every ten years by giving the government information on us and our families by participating in the Census.

Sadly, many of us citizens have not participated in our election process because we are not registered to vote. To see if you’re currently registered to vote, visit vote.org and click Check Your Registration. Follow instructions given. If you’re not registered to vote, visit vote.org and click Register to Vote. From there, follow the clear, simple instructions to qualify you to vote.

Even if you already are registered to vote, there are several reasons why you may need to re-register. 1) You recently moved to another location. 2) You’ve changed your name since the last time you voted. 3) You’d like to change political parties. 4)You haven’t voted in the past four years. 5) You’ve never registered to vote at all. It’s a simple process to register. Just go to Vote.org and follow the simple directions. Without being registered to cast your vote, you have no voice in the future of this country. And as such, you have no right to complain about local or national issues. If you haven’t got an up to date registration card, get one now! And then vote for the people and laws you support. Do it NOW!

Next, we urge all of our readers to participate in the 2020 Census count. By law, the U.S. government is required to count the number of people living in the country every 10 years. Getting an accurate people count benefits you. The Census data is used to determine how much federal funding is allocated for your area for important projects and essential services. The Census count also decides how many representatives will be sent to Congress from each state. Getting an accurate count is designed to be fast, easy and safe. You can submit your information online, by mail, or by phone. Some households will receive a printed questionnaire which they can mail, postage free, back to the Census Bureau. By computer, just go to Census.gov and fill out the simple forms online.

Our humble request to you is to make sure you’re registered to vote. And then do so by mail or in person. And then respond to the Census Bureau by giving them all the information they request in order for  the government to know just how many people reside in your area and in the country. Our future democracy depends on all of us taking our responsibilities as citizens seriously. Thanks!!!
