A majority of Americans say the relations between white and Black Americans is at least somewhat bad, according to a new poll.

A Gallup poll released Wednesday shows race relations have sunk to a new low since Gallup started surveying people about the topic in 2001.

Poll results show:

  • 24% of Americans say relations between white and Black Americans are very bad.
  • 31% of Americans say relations between white and Black Americans are somewhat bad.
  • 37% of Americans say relations between white and Black Americans are good.
  • 7% of Americans say relations between white and Black Americans are very good.
  • 59% of Americans are optimistic that relations between Black and white Americans will get better by the end of this year.

The perception of race relations began to spiral downward around 2015, according to the poll. The slide began after several high-profile police-involved killings of Black Americans occurred

Prior to that, a majority of people surveyed said they felt race relations were good. Polls conducted between 2001-2013 on the topic showed anywhere from 63% to 72% of people reporting relations between white and Black Americans as good.

The poll was conducted before the police-involved shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The poll surveyed 1,226 adults between June 8 and July 24. The margin of error is ±4 percentage points.
