As colleges started the Fall Semester, many school opted to keep all learning remote.  Other universities, which opened their doors to in-person learning, are already having trouble enforcing social distancing after school-hours.

New York University warned its students to adhere to social distancing protocols, after a video became public, which showed hundreds of youth congregated in Washington Square Park on Saturday night.  “We have received reports and videos of large crowds of young people gathering in Washington Square Park last night, with some people not wearing masks or distancing,”  Marc Wais, senior vice president for student affairs, wrote in a statement on Sunday evening.

As reported by the NY Post, the youth were seen drinking, dancing, and not wearing masks or adhering to social distancing guidelines at the popular outdoor NYU hangout just days after classes opened.  The video also shows police vehicles and officers stationed outside the park on standby, but not getting involved.  The public park is only steps away from the University and flanked by the academic buildings and dorms.  On Sunday morning, the Parks Department crew was seen cleaning up trash from the overnight revelry.

“[T]he expectations we have set for NYU students apply both on-campus and off-campus,” added Wais in his statement. “We are investigating the circumstances from last night and any students who have violated our expectations will be subject to disciplinary action”.   On Saturday, NYU had tweeted that over 20 students were suspended for breaking the school’s new COVID-19 safety policies, as colleges across the country struggle to tame young adults, and keep them from spreading the Chinese bug.  New York University did not provide details about the suspensions, which were made only days after in-person classes started on Wednesday.

“Please don’t be the next. Avoid parties and bars,” the school said. “Wear a mask. Keep your distance.”   The school’s twitter post added “Your actions count.  Will your actions contribute to cancelling in-person classes and closing campus?  Or will they contribute to a more hopeful tomorrow?”

Notwithstanding, by Sunday night, the college-aged crowds were at it again, gathering at the park, with many failing to practice social distancing measures.  As per the Post, some of the youth were seen drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana in view of two NYPD officers, who were stationed by the park.
