New York City’s gun violence and death toll continues to climb.

On early Monday morning, a man was fatally shot going out to walk his dog.  Michael Scully, 62, was shot in the head and shoulders at approximately 6:50 a.m., just minutes after he came out of his apartment on 74th Street near Seventh Avenue in Bay Ridge, police said.  As reported by the NY Post, the victim was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.  The details of the shooting and the circumstances were not very clear.  No arrests have been made as yet, and the police have not yet disclosed a motive.

“He had exchanged words with the assailant before getting shot though the nature and circumstances are unclear,” state Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus posted on Facebook after talking to police.  “The story is really upsetting because we all deserve the freedom to walk our pets in peace without fear of losing our lives,” she added.

As per the Post, surveillance video of the shooting shows the gunman and the victim arguing.   The assailant is seen taking out a gun from his waistband, and firing multiple shots before walking away.

Neighbors say the victim, a bachelor and perfume salesman who lived in Brooklyn all his life, was a beloved neighbor and friend, always ready to lend a hand.   “He was a great guy,” said William Mendez, 56, of sunset park. “This is terrible. Who gets shot walking their dog? He has five dogs and I am worried who is taking care of them. They gotta catch whoever did this.”

“He was a wonderful guy, he loved his country,” said Mendez, 55, who had known the victim since elementary school. “He helped when he could help,” added Mendez.  “I don’t know. I can’t picture anybody hurting Mike. I cannot believe this.”

The tragic incident was just one of at least 10 people hurt in early Labor Day gun violence across NYC, as per police.  Less than an hour earlier, in Inwood on 10th Avenue near Sherman Avenue, a woman and two men were shot at a BP gas station, police said.  Around 4:30 a.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in the thigh in the Bronx at East Kingsbridge Road in the Fordham Manor neighborhood, cops said.
