A hidden gem of the Paris museum scene, the Museum of Art and History of Judaism (known as “The mahJ”), located in the exquisite 17th-century Hôtel de Saint-Aignan in the historic Marais neighborhood, has launched its first new exhibition since its reopening earlier this month.

The mahJ showcases the works of some of the greatest artists and personalities in history, featuring more than 12,000 exhibits from antiquity to the present day. Among those featured are Robert Capa, Marc Chagall, Sigmund Freud, Sigalit Landau, Charlotte Salomon, Arnold Schoenberg, Art Spiegelman and John Zorn.

The new exhibition, titled Jews in Morocco, 1934-1937, features photographs by Jean Besancenot, depicting rural Jewish communities in Morocco, which no longer exist today. Besancenot, who visited Morocco thanks to a grant he received from the Foreign Ministry, documented this unique period of Jewish culture in Morocco, particularly through capturing the traditional ceremonial costumes worn by locals. The exhibition brings together many of Besancenot’s own period prints from both public and private collections, along with an audio-visual presentation of images from his original negatives.

For its reopening, the mahJ has implemented a number of new safety measures, including mandatory use of masks for all visitors, reduced capacity per room, and a new one-way only path through the museum.
