New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft made his first public comments since the shocking news that the billionaire allegedly solicited prostitution at a massage parlor in Florida, ESPN reports.

“I am truly sorry,” Kraft said in a statement. “I know I have hurt and disappointed my family, my close friends, my co-workers, our fans and many others who rightfully hold me to a higher standard.” He added that his silence is the result of his ongoing legal situation, in which he’s been charged with two misdemeanors that could mean jail time.

“Throughout my life, I have always tried to do the right thing,” Kraft, a powerful old white man who allegedly solicited sex from young and exploited sex slaves, said. “The last thing I would ever want to do is disrespect another human being. I have extraordinary respect for women; my morals and my soul were shaped by the most wonderful woman, the love of my life, who I was blessed to have as my partner for 50 years,” Kraft’s statement continued.

“As I move forward, I hope to continue to use the platform with which I have been blessed to help others and to try to make a difference. I expect to be judged not by my words, but by my actions. And through those actions, I hope to regain your confidence and respect.”

ESPN reports that Kraft is due in court on Thursday. He will still be at an annual NFL owners meeting that will happen in Arizona.

ESPN added that Kraft’s lawyer wanted “to correct some of the misinformation surrounding this matter.”

Kraft’s lawyer, William Burck, said to the sports news outlet: “There was no human trafficking and law enforcement knows it. The video and the traffic stop were illegal and law enforcement just doesn’t want to admit it. The state attorney needs to step up and do the right thing and investigate how the evidence in this case was obtained.”

The Jewish Voice reported about when police in Florida said that the owner of the NFL’s most successful franchise in recent years solicited prostitution from a spa in Jupiter. The facility, Orchids of Asia Day Spa, was raided as part of an investigation into alleged sex slavery practices, according to police.

CNN reports that the sting was months in the making and that two separate trips he made to the spa got him tangled up in the probe. A spokeswoman for the local police department, Kristin Rightler, made sure to clarify that “charges have been filed” against Kraft, “but he has not been arrested.” The Patriots organization had only a short comment that it would provide about the ongoing situation. “We categorically deny that Mr. Kraft engaged in any illegal activity. Because it is a judicial matter, we will not be commenting further.”

The months-long probe involved undercover officers using body cameras in order to obtain evidence against the alleged sex ring and anyone else involved, which includes Kraft and 19 other people who were charged and are all on video tape allegedly committing crimes, according to Jupiter Police Chief Daniel Kerr. He added that the probe included additional surveillance measures on the alleged ring and its alleged front business.

Guilty or not, the team Kraft owns appeared to have already scrubbed at least one of its social media postings as a preemptive attempt to stop people from seeing and spreading the post that seems embarrassing in this new light with these allegations.
Kraft is also fighting to keep the undercover video footage of him at the spa under seal.
