On Thursday, the daughter of the late Arizona Senator John McCain responded to the litany of anti-Semitic remarks of Rep Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on ABC’s “The View.” As a regular contributor to discussions of issues that are capturing headlines in the news, Meghan McCain became emotional when addressing the rising tide of global anti-Semitism and especially the reprehensible utterings of Rep Omar.

Responding to comments by co-host Sonny Hostin, who insisted that a resolution specifically condemning anti-Semitism was not appropriate but rather suggested that a statement condemning all forms of racial and religious hatred would better serve the Democratic party, McCain’s eyes began to well with tears and her voice began to choke with palpable emotion when she said that she did not understand why Omar was singling out Jews for her comments and why Omar’s emphasis in condemnations were specifically targeted against Israel.

McCain said that while she did not have any family members who were Jewish, she did say that both Joe and Hadassah Lieberman, were like family to her and that the horrifying escalation of global anti-Semitism was very frightening to her. While she did not mention the Holocaust in particular, her remarks suggested that she was quite concerned the increasing anti-Semitism in Europe and in the United States could possibly spiral out of control and lead to a scenario in which yet another genocide of Jews could occur.

Her co-host Sonny Hostin said that as a woman of color and a person whose grandfather was a Sephardic Jews, she had been subjected throughout the course of her life to loathsome prejudice, bigotry and discrimination. But her remarks suggested that passing a resolution that would protect only Jews from hatred was not in the best interests of all parties concerned.
