The man accused of being the Nxivm sex-cult’s head, Keith Raniere, is said to be begging a judge to free him on bail pending trial.

Brooklyn federal court Judge Nicholas Garaufis had already nixed a plan proffered by the suspect that reportedly included his being guarded by former agents of the Secret Service.

“Raniere is now trying to convince the judge he deserves to be out based on a nearly two-page explanation of Nxivm’s teachings, complete with a bibliography and YouTube links, the New York Post reports.

Raniere’s reported conditions are said to include a $1 million bond secured by three properties and their anonymous owners, home confinement and electronic monitoring.

“Just as Socrates challenged the young people of Athens to question sacrosanct beliefs of the time, and indeed was executed for his disruption of a closed-minded system of government, Nxivm challenges participants to question, rather than blindly accept, the fundamental content of their lives,” one paragraph in the document goes.

“Why, for example, are we practicing the religion we are? Do we really believe its precepts or is it just easier to not disappoint our parents? Do we have the relationships with our parents or our children that we really want? If not, why not? What can we do to have better relationships with the people we love?”

Britain’s Daily Mail reported in October that rare audio of Raniere telling members of Nxivm about how men need constant sex and will ‘do it with anything’ had come out in the wake of his arrest of federal sex trafficking charges. The audio was featured in the CBC podcast Escaping Nxivm and offers a glimpse into the man who went on to command at least 150 ‘slaves’ in the cult’s sex group DOS.

“In that same series, former DOS members have shared what they were forced to hand over as collateral to become the slave to their masters,” said the Daily Mail. “Sarah Edmondson reveals that she was asked to sign the deed to her house over to Lauren Salzman and later record herself as she claimed her husband was physically abusive. Another young woman says that she had to hand over a photo in which both her face and inner labia could be clearly seen in the same frame.”

“From a Smallville actress turned alleged top recruiter to heiresses and billionaires, the cult Nxivm has cycled through a host of famous and influential followers,” is how The Daily Beast reported the story. “Formerly known as Executive Success Programs, Nxivm is the brainchild of Keith Raniere, who was just arrested in Mexico on sex trafficking charges. As The Daily Beast previously reported, Raniere has been accused of creating DOS, a “sorority” in which female “masters” recruited “slaves” who were reportedly branded with Raniere’s initials and, according to FBI official William Sweeney, “considered [Raniere’s] sex slaves.”

Sweeney continued, “He allegedly participated in horrifying acts of branding and burning them, with the cooperation of other women operating within this unorthodox pyramid scheme.”

According to the AP, “Investigators said Raniere preferred exceptionally thin women, so ‘slaves’ had to stick to very low-calorie diets and document every food they ate. As punishment for not following orders, women were forced to attend classes where they were ‘forced to wear fake cow udders over their breasts while people called them derogatory names,’ or threatened with being put in cages.”
