Israel shot down a Syrian Sukhoi Su-24fighter jet over Israeli airspace on Tuesday afternoon, shortly after it crossed over from Syria.

Air raid sirens sounded throughout the Golan Heights as well as the Galilee at around 1:30 PM on Tuesday, as two Patriot missiles were dispatched to intercept the invading aircraft, which managed to return to Syria after being intercepted, making a crash landing near the border. It is unclear at this moment whether the pilot managed to eject form the aircraft before the crash.

This is the second significant incident to take place on the Syrian border in 24 hours, after Monday saw the IDF launching two David’s Sling interception missiles after identifying launches of two soviet made SS-21 Ballistic missiles in Southern Syria.

“Two Patriot missiles were launched at a Sukhoi fighter jet. The plane was under surveillance, penetrated about two kilometers into Israeli territory and was intercepted,” the IDF Spokesperson said in a statement, adding that since the early morning, there has been an increase in the internal fighting in southern Syria, which brought about an increase in Syrian Air Force activities.

“We are alert and highly prepared and will continue to act against breaches of the 1974 agreements,” the IDF Spokesperson concluded.

On the downing of the Syrian jet, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a comment saying, “Our air defense systems identified a Syrian Air Force jet that took off from the T-4 Syrian Air Force base and penetrated Israeli airspace. This is a gross violation of the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement with Syria. I have reiterated and made clear that we will not accept any such violation. We will not accept any such penetration of, or spillover into, our territory, neither on the ground nor in the air. Our forces acted appropriately. We insist that the Syrians strictly abide by the Separation of Forces Agreement between us and them.”

In a somewhat related development it was reported several weeks ago that the Golan Regional Council asked residents to prepare small bags with supplies “that would provide Syrian children with a moment of innocence and joy.”

“We would love for families in the Golan to prepare small bags for Syrian children with small toys, crayons and candies,” read the message sent by the council.

In less than 24 hours the message went viral, not just in the Golan, but throughout Israel, and hundreds of people volunteered to bring goodie bags from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Ramat Gan and elsewhere.

“They are our neighbors. Every parent knows that a small gift can make a child smile and we want to make the Syrian children smile,” Dalia Amos, the spokesperson for the Golan Regional Council told Tazpit Press Service
