The new Samsung phone will offer an important new feature.

In a stunning new development in modern technology, Samsung has unveiled a new digital phone that the user will be able to unlock simply by looking at it.

The Galaxy Note 7 will be equipped with an iris scanner, which has the capacity to match patterns in its user’s eyes with the patterns that were detected by the phone during its initial setup. This new feature presents an alternative to fingerprint ID, which does not produce the proper results when the individual’s fingers are wet. To be sure, the four-digit passcode will still work.

Outside of this unprecedented innovation, though, the updates in the Note 7 are primarily enhancements, such as a more resilient glass screen, rather than anything truly revolutionary. In actual fact, the iris technology is not new, as Microsoft’s Lumia 950 phones already carried it.

While the Galaxy Note 7 comes with a better camera, it is really the same one that the smaller Galaxy S7 phones were given in March, except for interface enhancements to access settings and more readily switch between the phone’s front and rear cameras.

Samsung’s innovative edge had notably diminished after Apple matched the company in terms of size with its iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in 2014. However, due to the popularity of the S7, Samsung just reported its most successful quarterly financial results in two years. The new Note 7 phone is being released only weeks before Apple is expected to announce its own new models.

Generally speaking, Samsung releases its regular-size phones during the spring and its jumbo phones in August. On this occasion, Samsung has just one large model, which maintains the previous size of 5.7 inches. The phone will have curved edges, a popular feature limited to a special “Edge” model before. The new Note 7 will be made available in the United States starting Aug. 19, but the prices have not yet been announced.

Samsung is also set to release an updated virtual-reality headset. The improved version will feature a dedicated home button, a more expansive field of view and a black interior to improve the viewing experience. The new Gear VR will first be available on Aug. 19 for $100. On the same day, a previously announced 360-degree camera entitled Gear 360 will be released, with a price tag of $350. As phones become more intrinsically well-developed and innovation slows down, virtual-reality has been one area in which gadget producers attempt to entice consumers.

As has been the case with past Note phones, the Galaxy Note 7 comes with a stylus, which is an expansion of a feature that enables the user to magnify text and images by hovering the pen over it. This pen will afford people different ways to easily create and share GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) animations.

Moreover, the Note 7 expands on a feature to give sensitive files an extra layer of security. The device’s user will be requested to provide an iris scan, fingerprint or passcode to access documents that the person placed in a Secure Folder. With this security enhancement, in case the user gives the phone to friends to browse pictures, he will not be inadvertently granting them access to confidential work documents.
