J. Greenstein & Co. to Feature Rare European Judaica Pieces Significant to Jewish History and Observance

NEW YORK, NY, May 1st, 2016 – On May 17th, 2016, J. Greenstein & Co.’s Auction House (www.jgreenstein.com), the highly esteemed source of antique and rare Judaica, will host its bi-annual Judaica auction, featuring unique Judaica pieces. This auction will feature unique pieces from the collection of Rabbi Henri Loeb, Belgium’s Grand Rabbi from 1834-1859, and a piece found in an attic 45 years after it was acquired.  Additionally, pieces collected by Dr. Stephen Oppenheimer, who served as Optometrist to the Stars in Los Angeles for many years.  The auction will be held in Cedarhurst, Long Island, at the J. Greenstein & Co. gallery. Jonathan Greenstein, gallery president will host the auction, which will feature 179 unique collectibles.

“Having the luxury of such a varied and valuable collection to auction off is a testament to our wonderful clients,” said Jonathan Greenstein. “These pieces are not only beautiful but also connect us to our Jewish heritage. Discovering the history of these pieces, which come from four different continents, has been a joy for me and I am excited to offer these artifacts to fellow Judaica collectors and aficionados.”

Highlights for the auction include a monumental silver presentation urn to given to Rabbi Henri Loeb in 1866 from the Jewish community of Belgium with an estimated value of $60,000-$80,000, and 1900s era Dutch silver spice container in the shape of a peacock collected by Dr. Oppenheimer.

Dr. Oppenheimer caught the “collecting bug” in 1964 while in Bucharest, Romania standing in the main Synagogue that still had damage from the WWII. In it, he saw a small room off the main sanctuary with some ceremonial objects of which many he could not recognize. It inspired him to learn about them and then collect these wherever he could find them.

Additional items include an important blue glass Kiddush cup from the Jewish National Fund, possibly made in the Netherlands, c. 1927, estimated $3,000-$5,000; a silver overlay anti-Semitic bottle probably from New York, c. 1900, estimated $3,000-$5,000; an anti-Semitic walking stick probably from Germany, c. 1880, estimated $2,200-$2,500; a silver amulet, Italy, c. 18th century, estimated $4,500-$6,500; a large silver Torah crown by Isaac Perlman, America, c. 1911, estimated $4,500-$6,500; a silver spice tower by N. Waxszslak, c. 1830, estimated $7,500-$9,500; a painting by Ilya Schor, America, c. 1950, estimated $6,500-$8,500; a monumental Chanukah lamp, Germany, c. 19th century, estimated $9,000-$12,000; a large silver Torah Tik, Iraq, c. 1890, estimated $8,000-$12,000; a large silver spice container, Poland, c. 1830, estimated $8,000-$10,000; an early Sefer Torah, Poland, c. 1880, estimated $6,000-$8,000; a large pair of silver Tefillin cases, Warsaw, c. 1866, estimated $12,000-$15,000; a pair of silver Torah finials by Lazarus Posen from Frankfurt, c. 1880, estimated $15,000-$20,000; a Baal Shem Tov style Chanukah lamp, Ukraine, c. 1810, estimated $12,000-$15,000; a Passover Hagadah by Arthur Szyk and edited by Cecil Roth in London, c. 1939, estimated $45,000-$55,000, and a monumental silver Torah shield by Giuseppe Sambonetti, Vercelli, c. 1879, estimated $45,000-$65,000.

The gallery, based in a 1500-sq-ft location in Long Island, NY, hosts numerous historic pieces from around the world, many of which will be featured in the auction. In past years, Greenstein’s Auction House rose to fame from hosting celebrity Judaica including pieces from Alan Dershowitz’s collection, Sammy Davis Jr.’s personal menorah and items from victims of the Bernard Madoff scandal.
