“The newly released document coincides with the 50th anniversary of revolutionary statement absolving the Jews of responsibility in Jesus’ death.”
Catholics shouldn’t try to convert Jews but rather, they should work with them to fight anti-Semitism.

The Vatican last Thursday stated that it is not the job of Catholics to convert Jews, but rather they should help them battle against the menacing scourge of anti-Semitism. The stamement was issued in a major new document rectifying the church’s difficult relations with the Jews of the past.

Among other things, this important Vatican document said that, “The Church is therefore obliged to view evangelisation to Jews, who believe in the one God, in a different manner from that to people of other religions and worldviews,” according to Reuters. It also said that Catholics should be particularly sensitive to the significance of the Holocaust to Jews.

What is more, it was expressed that, supposedly, a true Christian can never be an anti-Semite, especially because of the Jewish roots of Christianity. The document’s revelation happened to take place on the 50th anniversary of a revolutionary Vatican statement that repudiated the concept of collective Jewish guilt for Jesus’ death and launched a theological dialogue that traditionalists have rejected, reports Haaretz.

“In concrete terms this means that the Catholic Church neither conducts nor supports any specific institutional mission work directed towards Jews,” said the document, adding that there was a “principled rejection of an institutional Jewish mission.”

According to Reuters, a Vatican expert in Catholic-Jewish dialogue mentioned that it was “the first time a repudiation of active conversion of Jews was so clearly stated in a Vatican document.”
