Implementing Iran accord will be on agenda in first meeting between leaders since fierce row over deal

The White House on Wednesday announced that President Obama will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on November 9, their first meeting since a fierce row over the Iranian nuclear deal.

Spokesman Josh Earnest said implementing the Iran accord that Netanyahu opposed would be on the agenda of a visit designed as “a demonstration of the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Israel.”

On Thursday Obama had said that he hopes to meet Netanyahu next month at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to discuss the nuclear deal agreed upon with Iran.

Earnest said Friday that “the president has indicated on a number of occasions his desire to begin consultations with our Israeli allies about how to further deepen that cooperation.”

Netanyahu will meet with Kerry at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly at the end of the month.

Both Obama and Kerry had refused to meet with Netanyahu when he was in Washington in March to argue against the deal in Congress.

Discussions between high-ranking officials of Israel and the United States have quietly been taking place, Israeli daily Haaretz reported Sunday.

Netanyahu, who fiercely opposes the deal with Iran, has suspended security discussion with the United States until he was certain that the bill would pass in US Congress despite opposition by some Republican senators.

According to Haaretz, meetings including one with Adam Szubin, the Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Crimes at the US Department of the Treasury, which is in charge of sanctions against Iran, where issues relating to intelligence and diplomatic cooperation regarding Iran as well as the future security of Israel were discussed.

Szubin also updated Israel about possible additional sanctions on Iran as well as steps the US plans to take against senior Hamas and Hezbollah officials who are financed by Iran or have directed or plan terror attacks against Israel with the help of Iran, Haaretz added.

On Thursday Obama said that security discussions between the two states “already begun.”

“Our consultations have already begun with Israeli military and intelligence officials,” Obama said, adding that “my hope is to have a long discussion with Mr. Netanyahu about these issues when he comes to the United Nations during the General Assembly of the United Nations, or immediately after that.”                 (i24 News)
