On Saturday August 30th, 2014, the century old National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene, which launched its 100th Season by celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Fiddler on the Roof with a star-studded Broadway concert this past June, took to Westhampton Beach for its 10th Annual Labor Day Weekend Concert headlined by Pulitzer Prize- and Grammy Award-nominated Jazz composer-and-musician Don Byron and his orchestra. Together with guest performer Jack Falk, internationally-renowned for his work in Klezmer, they performed the music of the legendary Borscht Belt comedian and musician Mickey Katz.
The event, hosted at The Hampton Synagogue, has become a landmark tradition for the Eastern Long Island Jewish community in bidding farewell to the summer season with a celebratory concert featuring the best of Yiddish entertainers. Past concerts have starred such luminaries as Emmy Award Winner Fyvush Finkel; Israeli Oscar Winner Mike Burstyn;Tony Award Nominee Eleanor Reissa; star of PBS specials Too Jewish! and Too Jewish, Too!, Avi Hoffman; and cast member of the Broadway production Once, Joanne Borts.
The concert was free and presented in Yiddish and English. Filled with a wide-array of world-class entertainment, The Folksbiene’s 100th Season Celebration will conclude in June 2015 with the International Jewish Performing Arts Festival, a first-of-its-kind, with productions, concerts, screenings, lectures, tastings, readings and workshops presented throughout New York City.
