As part of its continuing effort to serve the community, particularly those still struggling with economic hardships, the Boro Park Jewish Community Council (BPJCC) is now offering free legal service to members of the community. The lawyers are provided by the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) and became available as a result of the Midwood Single Stop, a subsidiary of Met Council, merging their services with BPJCC and moving into the BPJCC offices.

“The mission of the Boro Park JCC is to be there to assist members of our community,” said Isaac Stern BPJCC President. “In many instances community members need the service of an attorney but are unable to afford them. We are this thrilled to provide these quality legal services through NYLAG.”

The rotating NYLAG attorneys are in Boro Park one day a week and provide expertise in four areas:

1- Housing Law, covering tenant’s rights, evictions, Section 8 disputes, and other general housing issues.

2- Immigration Law- assisting clients with citizenship, green card, and legal status. All inquiries are strictly confidential and are provided to undocumented immigrants as well

3-  Benefits Law, which can assist clients with issues regarding Social Security, SSI, appeals to Food Stamps and Medicaid ,and fair hearings

4- Family Law, which is there for clients dealing with divorce and child custody.

“In just the few weeks that these attorneys have been visiting our office, we have seen remarkable results for our clients,” said Rabbi Yeruchim Silber, Executive Director of the BPJCC.” We are most grateful to our partners at Met Council, UJA- Federation of New York and NYLAG for facilitating these services.”

BPJCC, an affiliate of Met Council, was founded to serve Boro Park and surrounding areas with all their social service needs, including Medicaid and Child Health Plus, food stamp enrollment, employment services, crisis assistance, immigration, financial counseling and legal services, and services to seniors and holocaust survivors
