On Thursday, July 10th, the United States moved to blacklist a group of companies that assisted Hezbollah, Lebanon’s strong militia obtain parts for surveillance drones. The companies under the sanctions will be banned from conducting business with all Americans and a freeze will be placed on any of their assets under U.S. jurisdiction.

Sanctions were placed on Beirut-based Stars Group Holding, by the U.S. The Group is to have used offices in China and Dubai to purchase electronics and other technology that was used to support Hezbollah’s military operations. According to the Treasury, the Shiite group received assistance in the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that were used to aid Syria’s Assad regime in subduing rebels, as part of the Stars Group’s transactions. Recently, the UAVs have been used to conduct surveillance over Israel. Engines, communications, electronics, and navigation equipment were among the materials that Stars Group bought from suppliers in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.

The company, its owner, executives Kamel Mohamad Amhaz and Issam Mohamad Amhaz, its subsidiaries, and two Stars Group managers, Ayman Ibrahim and Ali Zeaiter were all called for sanctions. In addition, a Star Group worker named Hanna Elias Khalifeh, was also included in the sanction; being described as a member of Hezbollah as well as a Lebanese businessman.

In a statement, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, “Today’s designation illustrates yet again the extent of Hezbollah’s international presence and reach. We call on our partners to take action against Hezbollah’s illicit networks, which fuel its violent political agenda and enhance its ability to engage in destabilizing activities in Syria, throughout the Middle East more broadly, and around the world.”
